fishback, the keys to the game. daymeon: if you look at utah, the defensive rebounding and knock down shots. coach boylen said they had to keep the offensive rebounds of l.s.u., they had to make some shots. play for 40 minutes, people who post shots and he said they still are having to learn to play for an entire game from tips until the horn goes off. matt: foster on the kickout. despite the fact that utah has a 7'3" and 6'11" man on the floor, very surprising they are number seven in the mountain west conference, averaging only three rebounds per game. daymeon: they need to be a better rebounding team. matt: he had a career high 19 against texas san antonio earlier this week but he has been in a shooting slump for the better part of the last month. daymeon: look at the offense of
8:08 pm
l.s.u. coming here for the most part, a good lesson on the ball. matt: like trying to shoot the ball over a tree. he just gets his hands out there. i mean, he's so long, it's like going up against someone who has a great reach and you can't get to his body. he reaches out there. he's already got two blocks and he's gone to the bench. that will be the key tonight. l.s.u., can they speed up the tempo and get the big man out of the game? daymeon: you called it, matt. you made an analogy of, you know, i think i would compare almost totally of one who makes a stand and he gets underneath the basket, you have to shoot over him. matt: four on the shot clock. bo spencer with 2. mitchell just gets it off and hits the three-pointer. tasmin mitchell is the best three shooter on this l.s.u.
8:09 pm
team and gives the tigers a two point lead. daymeon: any time you come home after a tough loss and especially when you've had the success that l.s.u. has had at home, first five minutes so crucial to try to get down and get a good lead. matt: pass is deflected. bodies on the floor. jump ball is called. possession arrow is pointing in favor of the yutah utes with 10 on the shot clock. daymeon: you look at both the western conference and the sec conference around the corner, you'll see a lot of bodies flying, high energetic young men out here trying to prepare and get ready for the second season coming up. matt: utah opens their mountain west conference schedule next saturday at 1:30 mountain time against texas christian. they'll be at home. l.s.u. will be home against alabama 4:00 central time next saturday. four on the shot clock. tillie and hit off the top of the backboard.
8:10 pm
actually, i think it actually hit off the shot clock, above the backboard. the 5-3 early lead for the l.s.u. tigers. freshman checks into the ballgame for l.s.u. and kinsley who got his third start of the season comes out. daymeon: speaking to coach johnson this morning, he spoke about how well kinsley has taken out to play. matt: mitchell gives it up. the three-pointer. matt: gives it up. tillie had it forced and got it back. finally able to save it. out of control, runs over warren
8:11 pm
and is called for the foul. daymeon: right now, utah struggling a little bit on the offensive end since the first basket, l.s.u. really turning up the defense but i think they want utah to be somewhat passive. knocked down the three-pointer. what they got to do is be a little more patient but be aggressive with their ball on the end. matt: l.s.u. is dead last in the sec hitting only 28% and 11th with only four threes per game. warren got the basket and was fouled. daymeon: one of the sophomores in the sec, and i don't care how young you are or who you're playing, this is a good catch. he's patient inside. he didn't rush it. with a nice touch up and over, whenever you can have that consistency on the inside, you've got yourself a positive. >> warren has to be one of the
8:12 pm
big stories and how much this production has gone up, of course, l.s.u. graduated four seniors out of their clothing from last year, five seniors from last year's team. daymeon: utah 1-4 from behind the three-point line so really, we're somewhat passive. they've got to try to get the basket to their side and make l.s.u. defend in the paint area. matt: tillie on the floor. had his shot blocked by warren. ahead to spencer. spencer goes to the other side and lifts the layup. carlon brown. that's a two. daymeon: coach boylen is trying to get other players coming off the bench and playing well. brian, no different. really coming off the bench and continuing 21 points and he thought he could put up points
8:13 pm
in a hurry. matt: big basket. ending a 9-0 run for l.s.u. and dennis harris gets the basket. they're looking for someone who step out and step out the big three. there's storm warren on saturday and if you look at sec coming up right around the corner, and you know, you can get scores from other areas. matt: that was up from a different area, coach. daymeon: he's a guy when he gets rolling, you have to make sure you put a hand in his face. you have to try to make him put it on the floor. you let him step outside and shooting will hurt you. matt: mitchell working against tillie.
8:14 pm
five point lead for the tigers. spencer throws it to nobody in particular. trying to connect with dennis harris, and it was high over his head. we are close to six minutes into this ballgame. storm warren getting the job done down low and the tigers have a five point lead.
8:15 pm
8:16 pm
matt: mitchell is pro in itself. spencer 20 points in the last five games and storm warren is one of the better big men in the conference this year. that early sec matchup now, when they play alabama, the coach will have to come in here with michael green. i think that matchup between two guys ought to be exciting. matt: michael green, the current sec player of the week. warren with seven double-doubles all of them coming in their home games. number five in the ncaa with those seven double-doubles. interesting to see, however, how he performs when he gets to the southeastern conference when pri johnson is closed and those lanes that you had to get all those rebounds and averaging
8:17 pm
10.3 rebounds per game. all the lanes you had prior to this, they start closing. you have to find a way to get around it. daymeon: people played well, of course, but those are freshmen who haven't experienced. of course, he has to go on the road and play because ear guys do not to watch a lot of film and how the younger guys respond in the sec. matt: he's been the leading scorer so far tonight. and 5 much lsu's first 13 points. averagining 13.9 pints pore gym. number 10 in the nation in rebounding. number two in the conference. sophomore out of monroe, louisiana, in ridge field high school. officials, mike stewart and pat adams over there are viewing an earlier play. i guess to determine whether it

was a three-pointer or not. didn't know what play they were looking at. daymeon: whatever, it didn't affect the scoring though they got a satisfaction on it. it's still 13-8. matt: inside they go to foster. that fouled on the play. and a size mass match there. they had aaron dotson, 6'4" matched up against the 7'3" foster and foster has the mismatch against anybody on the floor tonight. talk about the size and, you know, that's a very good look and he actually did and a lot of times when they see a trap come on a ball screen, they tend to hesitate. they bring the two balls away from when the defender from l.s.u. didn't have the time to recover. matt: a little bit later in the game here, we'll talk about a guy who has the shot of becoming the all times shot blocker in nba history. really knocking them away.
8:19 pm
already had 21 points. mitchell hits the three. that was a two, pardon me and the a four-point lead. inside they go to tillie. i really like the merits of coach boiler. he's real insear. -- he goes inside. so many teams in today's game of basketball, if the game is played from inside-out, they settle for that three-pointer it's so enticing when you go outside, you get better rebounds on lanes and opportunities as well. >> can play with whistle. plays volleyball above everybody else to get the ball. carlon brown is called for travel. carlon brown is an interesting story, the guard out of

riverside, california in he's the leading scorer in the last three games they've opted to bring him off the bench. daymeon: very athletic and has a very nice first step. we'll need that first step today. daymeon: it's like jace tavita, would have been better with the defensive edge. before the ball goes, it ends up in the hands of warren. bo spencer stolen away. daymeon: last year, more size, more confident, really developing his game from the perimeter. matt: on the money, shawn glover. 6'6" out of cedar hill, texas. what a big shot he had against illinois, came on november 27th and glover hits the buzzer-beater to beat them.
8:21 pm
are they came back from 16 down to win that ballgame and he tripped over his own teammate's foot. fortunately, he's ok. daymeon: talk about boylen and all his nba experience but we're seeing some nba shots from their hits and misses. matt: catch sports night weeknights at 6:00 and 11:00 eastern. they'll be back in the studio to recap the bowl picture and take a look at the bowls that are remaining including the orange bowl and the national championship game pitting alabama against texas. inside, glover and he traveled. this indecision on the inbounds, he was open and didn't go right up with it and he traveled. daymeon: a little hesitant. he should have took it right up. has a very good touch on the outside. we've already seen that and meet the play with confidence.
8:22 pm
to get better. matt: four turnovers for utah. two for l.s.u. both of these teams pretty good. utah in the mountain and a good grade point from the sec. matt: chris hines will check into the ballgame for utah. red shirt freshman out of houston averaging only 6 1/2 minutes per game. early look with chris hines. they'll play a lot of folks here tonight. air ball, stayed by mitchell. spencer fading away. not this time. grabbed the rebound, he tried the same move. mitchell's got nine. he's averaging 17 per game,

matt: l.s.u. with a seven point lead on utah and tasmin mitchell, off to a great start. 11 points and 5-6 shooting from the floor. daymeon: yeah, we told you at the beginning with him, with his ability to penetrate and lay down horizontally. he missed the rebound before. see the nice shot from the perimeter. he's done so much what l.s.u. behind marcus thornt on a lot last year and, of course, he was out with the stress fact fracture and had to deal with the injury. came back, almost 1700 points in 800 rebounds in his career at l.s.u. >> he had 13 points now, shy of 1700 started the night 324 shy of 2000. only two other players have done that. and that's current praise, shouldn't be able to top that to 2 001.

8:30 pm
matt: washburn, shot it too hard and a foul will be called on harris. that's going to be number 2 on him. l.s.u. now scored nine points off of six turnovers. daymeon: leading to the offense and you have this, you better have it -- everyone out there really coaches defense and coaches hard work and, you know, talk about double digits, in the past 11 years, he has been so successful and demands the best out of his kids. matt: i thought that foul had been called on harris. it was not. sec basketball, utah and l.s.u. in pete's maravich center in baton rouge, louisiana. happy new year to you and your family. l.s.u. with a seven point lead. that foul that i thought was

matt: l.s.u. tigers with the six point lead here with 7:48 to play in the first half. trent johnson talking about their 8-4 start and saying you know we're as talented as anybody we play but if we don't compete and grind, we'll get knocked on our butt. if a team beats him, he wants it to be because the team is better. that was the case when they got beat by uconn in madison square gardens but not because of some of their only losses this season. daymeon: right now, i think they've responded well from that game. came out and played well. that washington game, they played to overtime and i think they got a little overconfident now with xavier and struggled. matt: felt like they were a little better than they thought they were and xavier showed them just maybe how they weren't. got fouled by kinsley and that's going to be, i believe, number
8:37 pm
two. number one on him. kinsley, number one on him. and drca will be on the line for the 1-1. daymeon: when you look at the way utah is playing, continue to get better but wisconsin, you look at new mexico, top 25. look at some positive wins as well. as utah continues to get ready for the conference matchup, i think they're making strives tonight in going inside, establishing an inside presence and doing more than just shooting behind the three-point line. matt: they'll have their work cut out for them in the mountain west this year, no question about it after they won the regular season and the turn of tournament championship this year. byu 13-1 on the season and the leading scorer is a guy that's

8:39 pm
their strength of schedule 106 which is fourth out of the teams in the sec. but of the eight members -- daymeon: mentioned their wins at home because they have 3-3, how did they deal with it? but the one thing i like about l.s.u. is that guy right no -- right there. you know what he did last year, coach of the year. he's a guy that will get the best out of his players and to have a guy like mitchell and add warren and spencer to that, they have a shot. they have to get more ingredients, more people. matt: warren hits the free throw. a year ago, they had five seniors. those guys combined for 43 points, 22 1/2 rebounds. to trent johnson's credit, he
8:40 pm
didn't come in here and try to reinvent the wheel. so oftentimes, coaches will step into a situation and say, well, i've got to do things my way. trent johnson recognized he had a senior laden ballclub and he was able to work with what he had and work it to a 27-8 season. daymeon: he did but he's excited about his team as well. i think he should be. actually had his young players excited about it. a good utah team is making a run of late in the first half. matt: mitchell with 11 points and been a while since they called his name. daymeon: the coach on the sidelines saying no way, matt stewart, got him on the arm. matt: amazing that utah has
8:41 pm
blocked 10% of their opponents' shots. 83 blocks as a team and you see foster, 4.3. number one in the mountain west and number four in the nation. came into tonight's ballgame on pace for 125. that was the school record at utah set by luke neville last year at l.s.u. daymeon: you know what neville did last year, the mountain west conference. but right now, when you look at this, i think they had what they get into conference play. matt: threw it behind carlon brown. back on the break. jim boylen, his third season since 2007. been the utah coach. 13 seasons in the nba with the rockets, the warriors and the bucs as an assistant coach. and then assistant tom izzo for three seasons. actually two seasons before getting the utah job.
8:42 pm
daymeon: you know they really demand toughness out of their players, to be a physical team and i think if there's one thing that coach boylen will want more is get tougher physically and mentally. daymeon: that was just the second miss bys to minimum mitchell in this ballgame. inside they go to washburn and no place to go with it. in the corner, glover passes up the three. steps inside the arc. daymeon: could have rushed it. the consensus is and a nice j in style. matt: glover has five. he averages only 2.7 per game. mitchell in the three. but it's knocked away and called on utah. daymeon: you see mitchell could have taken that. he stands, nice pump fake.
8:43 pm
one dribble and knocked it down. you look at the way he's played here, and l.s.u. teams which has good calls. we talked about mitchell has impressed me a lot in this first half. matt: mitchell with 12 points. you see his numbers on the season. 17.3. it's his third best in the conference. 9.2 rebounds, also third best in the conference. daymeon: i think that's what separates them. a lot of girls put up 17, 18 points her game. will make him have to be locked at for the next level and getting 40 minutes of every game. matt: solid 6'7" and 238 pounds. no one is going to knock him around. five point lead for l.s.u. walks it up the floor for the

matt: five point lead for l.s.u. and we've been talking about storm warren and the great way he is in production. he's top six in the nation. elliott williams went from duke to memphis. that's your biggest increase and we'll see elliott williams and the memphis tigers take on southern miss next saturday, our css viewers will. storm warren there at the bottom of the list but that's the top of the nation. daymeon: that's very important to see because, you know, if you're a young player out there, no matter what level you're in, middle school, high school, college, even at the next level, the pros, a lot of times you may be frustrated and may not be where you want to as far as your minutes or the numbers that you have. warren had to go into a lot of work into the off season getting into the jam when other people was going out.
8:48 pm
he was into the gym. he was in the weight room and improving his game and you see he nails it. matt: warren gives l.s.u. a six-point lead. he's number one in the sec, as well, at 4 1/2 offensive rebounds per game. seven point lead. daymeon: keep this guy off of the offensive glass by any means necessary so that's where he'll continue to get challenged. matt: washburn, washburn looking. pass underneath it. tillie! nice play. daymeon: nice pass and nice reverse lay-in by tillie. matt: talk about an increase in production, not to the extent of warren but holy moly, a bigger

shooting. he has to stay on the slower end. that time, though, really beguiled by brown coming inside, taking his time with the little head sake and getting him to fae free-throw line. matt: carlon brown is normally a very short-handed free throw shooter. we approach the two minute mark of this half. daymeon: that could be very important as we see him on the pass rush. matt: contact from both guys. and drca comes up with the steal and he knew he got knocked down. daymeon: these are very important because utah was from this basketball game and could take the momentum.
8:51 pm
matt: brown with the runner. what did they say earlier today? a big old fist fight. been pushed to it so far on several occasions. mitchell with the offensive glass and he has 15 here in the first half. nearly has his four game average in the first 20 minutes. 15-6, another double-double. he has two of those in the last three games. an open three and instead drives the paint. daymeon: you can hear the screaming at the top of his lungs -- foul. that was a foul. and the official ran by and

matt: l.s.u. 39, utah 33. let's take a look back at the first half highlights and three point shooting came them in the game early. daymeon: talk about the inside-outside combination. on the road also and they've got those shots going inside and out, matt. and then you look at l.s.u., l.s.u. has mitchell. his name is storm warren, and he's been doing as well on the inside. we look at some of the numbers. in the first half, and then for l.s.u., 15-13 respectively for mitchell and warren. matt: and 13 second chance points for the tigers to utah's four and a look at the storm warren scoring line. a little bit more in detail and a look at his mads and misses. daymeon: well, tasmin mitchell, you know, he's got his own web site.

i think it's mr.versatility.com. look at all shows shots and behind the three-point line. those guys on the floor, he shows you he can post up and he can do it from mid range and knock it behind the three-point line as well. matt: two points shy of his two game average already. and warren with his 13 points. he's already at his per game average as well. you mentioned earlier, warren hit seven double-doubles. mitchell has four this season. 20 for his career and he's on his way, perhaps, notching his other one here tonight. daymeon: you mentioned him being in foul trouble in that first half. i look for him to try to get involved early in the second half. matt: mitchell and rebound

controlled by foster. foster end upsetting a good deal there in that first half as well because of his foul trouble and tillie missed the reverse and warren ends up with it. daymeon: you're right. utah playing a lot off of foster. using him to go inside, to try to cut off of him and use him as a decoy to get better looks outside. matt: l.s.u. in their home whites and utah in the road reds. inside they go to warren. daymeon: move foster out of the way. he has to be stronger and hold his ground a little bit more. matt: 15 for him. henderson and the rebound controlled by tillie. tillie really keeps things active here and he's the guy that coming into the season had a career scoring average of less than four. now averaging over nine and over six rebounds per game. daymeon: right there, you look at this out of bounds play. a lot of times teams go to sleep here. this always kind of gives you an

idea about the extra energy in the second half when you see these plays. matt: had it stripped out of his hands and that foul, by the way, it was called on warren. it was his second. daymeon: utah is going back in style and having some success. trying to play off some of the big men. matt: wow, nice pass, inside to tillie. tillie's got eight. tillie, a young man who was limited to 11 games his freshman season because of an ankle injury and never averaged more than five points per game in his first three seasons. kinsley had his shot blocked and henderson was notted able to save it. daymeon: yeah, he was. matt: it is going utah's way.

9:14 pm
you really want to get l.s.u. off. matt: eight point lead for l.s.u. early, second half. dotson stops him in the baseline. down to eight on the shot clock. and spencer got stopped by tavita. daymeon: let's understand, utah actually outscored l.s.u. 12-6 and so as you see these substitutions, it will be interesting to see if the depth of utah takes place in this second half as well. matt: well, mitchell and warren have 15 points a piece. outside of that, nobody else for l.s.u. has more than three. warren, the rebound. and mitchell got fouled into the back by washburn.
9:15 pm
daymeon: what you saw that time was really no box out by utah and if you don't box out a good rebounding team such as l.s.u., outrebound their opponents by more than five a game, you're going to struggle. matt: tillie got his long arms on that and knocked out of bounds. it will be l.s.u.'s ball. daymeon: now you have brown back in the game for utah. we talked about him on the star watch. if he gets going in this second half as well. see if spencer can get going here. they've got their top defensive guy lined up on spencer. less than 10 now on the shot clock.
9:16 pm
spencer threw it over the head of kinsley. out of bounds. daymeon: no ball movement. when you see the look on the coach's face, making some changes in there. no ball movement. no man movement. good job of defending by utah but l.s.u. didn't make it work defensively on that trip. matt: spencer out of his rhythm frustrated by the defense. he anticipated when the horn blew, he started walking towards the bench. thought he was coming out. came in for kinsley instead. tillie's pass swatted away by dotson. got his hands on it and now, 11 on the shot clock. tillie inside, watson went looking for it. pass ahead to spencer. couldn't control it. daymeon: he was up in the first row of the seats here at the

9:20 pm
matt: jace tavita has been on him and tavita is not on the floor right now. that opens things up a little bit for spencer with tavita on the bench. down to eight on the shot clock for utah. five, drca, no place to go with it. carlon brown, shot blocked by dotson. shot clock violation. daymeon: coach johnson excited about that. offensively and defense wins championships and your dada knows about that. you see the good, active hands and active feet by l.s.u. but 35 seconds on the shot clock. that's what we've got. matt: three blocks in this game for l.s.u. four blocks for utah. they are the big shot blocking team with six a game. warren, working against foster. got a piece of that shot. mitchell gets it up there. warren gets it back in.

9:24 pm
rebounding, matt. matt: utah number one in the mountain west a year ago, dead last out of 19 so far this season and they've given up 16 points so far tonight, second chance points. daymeon: you can't do that in a win especially on the road. allowing teams to out rebound you in the offensive end is not giving yourself a chance to win. coach boylen knows that. double digit lead tonight and a little bit more here. matt: takes it to the hole. carlon brown trying to get it back. the foul.
9:25 pm
daymeon: no help defense that time by any of the teammates so what you have is good offense, just some subpar defense on the last one. matt: carlon brown at the line. six for him. he was upset at the entire team after they lost to pepperdine in their final game before christmas in front of only 612 people in riverside, california. that's the low point for utah. brought them to 5-7 on the season. after the game, he said it was unacceptable they were two games under .500. utah going through some tough times right now. especially right before christmas with that loss.
9:26 pm
trying to block mitchell along the sideline there. daymeon: mitchell was a guy who could have went on as a fifth year senior and could have went to the next level. instead, he decided to stay and now he's really trying to put this team on his shoulders and on his back along with warren and simpson. matt: mitchell directing traffic. looking to get his ball to his buddy. working to much bigger foster. still nothing doing yet with 10 seconds on the shot clock. warren had the shot. i think altered by foster and mitchell got it right across the bridge of the nose as he was cutting through the lane. daymeon: again, you can see
9:27 pm
mitchell comes to the offsides on the ball and really trying to keep him off that offensive glass that makes him so strong and so physical, difficult to keep him from getting to the rim. matt: mitchell rebound controlled by carlon brown. glover. glover had a nice first half. a little something for this utah team. really one of the young pieces to the puzzle here for this utes team that jim boylen admits that it takes about a year for guys to learn his plan. daymeon: right now, this is a crucial run. and of course, you look at the utes being down eight points. if they're going to get back into it, they have to get dotson on the defensive end, you know, best part of the basketball team, whenever they've gotten in
9:28 pm
a bind, they go to warren inside. matt: mitchell missed the runner and ball last touched by l.s.u. utah's ball. they were down by as much as 12 and comes down to four. right back in the ballgame. daymeon: this is what i'm talking about as far as when you get into conference play for l.s.u., matt, most of these plays have been going to mitchell and warren and they've been getting stopped by utah. you have to get some other options and help. some other guys, whether be dotson or others to step up and become that fifth option for l.s.u. matt: the runner. and utah's back with six straight points. 10 for dircha. senior out of belgrade, serbia.
9:29 pm

9:32 pm
frustrating right there. you can almost see it on his face, like he wants to be doing something. generally when he gets the ball, he's like i'm taking this up but he has to have more activity. he's too big of a player to have ta a night like tonight. when you get in foul trouble, it gets tough. you kind of get into a lull, kind of nonchalant. he has to have some homemade energy in the second half. matt: previous mode this season with a five point performance in that blow out loss to utah or rather, uconn, at madison square garden and he was hurt for the last 14 minutes of that ballgame and he hurt his ankle, missed the next game against arizona state. to the hole and a foul is going to be called on kinsley. jace tavita went to the rack on him and tavita will be at the line -- or i'm sorry, drca will be at the line. daymeon: drca has been very active. you talked about him. out of bell gaygrade in serbia.

look at college basketball. espn.com for georgia tech, lethal weapon 3 star and former georgia bulldogs coach talking hoops. it begins in january this month on the css. harris off back iron. l.s.u. in a lull here. what happened to them? daymeon: you know, we talked about the ability on this play. they need more of what you see there. they need harris. he's a guy who is athletic, has a tremendous up side. he just has to continue to apply the athleticism and play with more confidence and i know coach trent johnson wants that from him and all the other players on the team. matt: l.s.u. has gone more than four minutes without a basket. henderson fading away.
9:36 pm
henderson makes it a three point game. he's had a couple of 20 point games here in his first collegiate season. mitchell driving. and foster looking defensively, knocks the shot out of bounds. daymeon: storm warren getting back saying i've had enough. his presence getting missed. that goes to having some type of inside presence and take some stuff off the perimeter on the outside. matt: approaching five minutes without a basket for l.s.u. they've seen a 12 point lead whittle to three. warren got fouled by tillie. or foster, one or the other. probably on foster. daymeon: warren comes back inside immediately. he goes to the rim. and gets a tie. that foul was on tillie.
9:37 pm
number four. you made a good point. your fourth foul on tillie. along with that, you get baskets at the rim and so you're hitting teams twice. matt: l.s.u. gets their points at the free-throw line right now while they're having difficulty scoring. come out and a fresh three coming for utah. daymeon: the three-point line, want to stand outside and shoot threes all day but going into the basket, you can control the game. matt: warren, 9-11 from the free-throw line tonight. 51% free throw shooter on the season. he is 9-11. and i believe only one other free throw shooter of the tigers outside of warren. henderson, long three.
9:38 pm
rebound controlled by bass. daymeon: that's how you go get a rebound. that's what they talked about. they said the other players on the team don't have to do so much as far as scoring. do little things to help the team lead. matt: lid remains on the basket for l.s.u. and last touched by henderson as he knocked it out of bounds. daymeon: i liked the foul that time by henderson. you know, you see it going inside. and you see, this is what wins these games. despite the loose ball, look who comes up on short end at that time but the good effort. matt: 13:48 the last time l.s.u. scored a bucket from the floor. everything since then has come from the free-throw line. all five points. dots dotson, foul underneath. going to be on utah.

9:40 pm
9:41 pm
matt: has allowed the utes to get back into this game and turn the deficit into five. daymeon: you see here, we talk about other players besides the big trio. get it inside. but we look at that hustle by henderson. defensively that shows you. calls a time-out. much different energy. again, you see a guy that when you get into sec play, you'll have some more guys and you'll struggle a little bit. you go through that drought and have an l.s.u. team that goes on a 10-3 run or actually had a 10-3 run against them and now had the utah team that's back into this basketball game.
9:42 pm
matt: mitchell now with 18. nine rebounds. so up close to that double-double and may have stayed alive at the free-throw line here. they're nearly six minutes now without a bucket. 5:48 and counting. but the lead back to seven as mitchell hits both of those free throws. you see the second half shooting here and both -- you see utah 3-6. they've taken half of the shots as l.s.u. is 3-12 and the tigers are now 49d% from the floor for the entire game but they can build the lead back to 9 or 10 if they can hit a three. committed the foul after failing to get the three. daymeon: this is the style that i like, a gritty player in the passing lane. just came up a little short. l.s.u. a little lackadaisical with the basketball right now. 7:34 and the basketball, not
9:43 pm
happy by any means. it has to be a shocker. matt: bass at the free-throw line. string of makes for them at the charity stripe. ball last touched by l.s.u. empty possession for the tigers. daymeon: empty possessions, what utah has done is turned it up on the defensive end but offensesively they have still yet to get anything going consistently. a couple of shots from the perimeter, has some inside chances. nice back cuts to the rim. but no consistent offense here tonight. matt: foul will be called on dotson. shooting well from the floor here in the second half. turned cold. daymeon: second chance points and this has been the game, 17-16.
9:44 pm
and he was 37-31 at the half. they go back inside to foster. and foster got pushed. but i'll take that. as long as utah, i'll take that inside-outside action. you look at foster. and he's got to be stronger with the basketball. he has to push but if he can hold his ground and go straight up, he'll be a problem in that mountain west conference. matt: foster back following a two year mission and played in 2006 and 2007 as a freshman. played five minutes per game and come back and now is a 21-year-old sophomore. one of nine children. and among his nine siblings, two sets of twins.
9:45 pm
five point game as foster put it in the free-throw line. daymeon: if i'm l.s.u., i'm going right back inside to warren where they've had success all night. matt: nearly seven minutes without a bucket for l.s.u. warren, pass intercepted. utah already with big wins over illinois and michigan to their credit, trying to add l.s.u. to that list. tillie, knocked down the three. three point game as trent johnson calls time-out and daymeon, unless the l.s.u. tigers can finally hit some baskets, they're not going to win this game. they've gone seven minutes without a field goal.
9:46 pm
daymeon: not only baskets but turned the basketball over. give credit to brown, we talked about his ability to penetrate on our star watch. draws three defenders and tillie doing what's necessary. converting with the three-pointer from behind the arc. nothing but straight music. matt: so tillie now with 10 points has utah back to within three after they trailed by as much as 12. more sec basketball coming up tuesday night for our viewers on css and the sec and acc battle, georgia and georgia tech. join me along with artherial green live from the coliseum at 7:00 eastern. daymeon: that will be a good matchup. you have two young players there in tray thompson in the sec and, of course, everyone knows about derek for georgia tech, just a beast. so those two young guys ought to be able to go at it. matt: what a way to end your nonconference schedule taking on
9:47 pm
your biggest rivalry in that conference. georgia has georgia tech and then they open the conference against kentucky. daymeon: well, right now, very exciting in the game of basketball. mentioned this game here tonight. both teams important. kind of a snowball effect every season. you want to win this game. you want to have your system in place, guys knowing their role and have positive outlooks. matt: you're watching sec basketball. utah and l.s.u. from pete maravich center in baton rouge, louisiana. matt stewart along with daymeon fishback and happy new year to you. l.s.u. leading by only three now as they have seen their double-digit lead dwindle here since they can't score. by the time they get it back, the drought will be over eight minutes. carlon brown got fouled by dotson. that will be number five for him.
9:48 pm
dotson fouls out with five points. daymeo daymeon: a lot of styles in there. right now, i think warren trying to go at it too quickly. needs a little bit more ball movement. go inside and then play off of that. right now, utah has a chance to either tie or cut the lead to one. matt: philly, back inside they go to foster. foster back inside to warren. foster with the lead. daymeon: i like that. the kid to go to, because right now, when you look at these two teams, both of them are going inside and the defense is going to utah. daymeon: over eight minutes since l.s.u. hit a field goal.
9:49 pm
they led 47-35 and it's now a 52-51 game. there are five points and they've all come from the free-throw line and spencer, it goes from bad to worse for bo spencer. he's now 1-5 as he air balls that attempt. daymeon: i commend spencer for not trying to force it tonight. but you can't turn it on and turn it off. you have to get a better look to that. if i'm spencer, too big, strong, too athletic, i'd be trying to get to the rim a little bit more. matt: utah hit an early three point bucket and puts them back in the lead! daymeon: we got us a ballgame. utah defending. l.s.u. struggling. warren not getting it done inside. right now, look for mitchell to get it offensively for l.s.u. matt: nine minutes for l.s.u. since they scored a bucket. will they ever score again, daymeon? kinsley and finally!
9:50 pm
game tied at 54. carlon brown hits the floater. pops it over warren. and back to when they fell by 12 and boylen called that time-out thinking the game was slipping away and got right back into it. foster made him change his shot. mitchell's second chance shot, johnson screaming on the sidelines. thought there was a foul. over to tillie. tillie and here's a shot blocked by warren! under four minutes to play.
9:51 pm
daymeon: give credit to him battling with mitchell. not letting him have the basketball. matt: kinsley, reach-in foul. i believe it will be called on drca. 3:27 to play. marshall henderson shoots utah into the lead.
