slow him down in the first 20 minutes of play, and florida exits to its locker room, trailing by only two, thanks to that erving walker bucket late, 29-27. florida has to feel good, larry, about the fact they're only down two. it was getting away from them, trailing eight, but a nice comeback. >> larry: donovan was getting frustrated with the guards. they turned the ball over a lot. they are still having difficulty making the short range and long range shots. getting a lot of chances to look at the basket, but not making the shots. >> bob: a two-point game was the verdict in gainesville last season. it's a two-point spread here today on acc sunday night hoops presented by pizza hut. north carolina state with the lead, 29-27. stay with us. our coverage of acc basketball continues in a moment.

>> bob: we welcome you back to raleigh, and a 29-27 nc state over florida. gators led by four in the opening two minutes of the game. nc state's biggest lead was eight. state, behind tracy smith, opened shooting 8 of 12 from the field, but they finished the half by missing 11 of their last 15. let's find out what the coaches had to say, and for that, we go to debbie antonelli. >> debbie: i was able to catch up with billy donovan at the end of the half, and he feels like his team needs to come to helm on tracy smith on the bounce. he does not want to give up any threes, though nc state has only hit two. the other thing is, he feels like they have to make shots. they're 0 for 9 outside the arc. if they can take better care of the basketball, get in their transition game, billy thinks they can get back in the game. >> bob: and the first half numbers, thank you, debbie. there's the story outside the arc. 0 for 9. and interesting to note, larry the offensive rebounding.

nine of them for florida, but only four second chance points. >> larry: you have to do something with those rebounds once you get them. they've done a nice job on the offensive glass. haven't been able to translate that into points. state opens up in their m man-to-man defense. >> bob: macklin spent much of the half with foul difficulty. turns it over here. gonzalez gives to horner. smith. little bit different when he's got macklin in there guarding him from behind. he's stronger and bigger. and a better shot blocker. 15 on the shot clock. williams. florida the other way.

boynton, no. macklin had it ripped out of his hands. >> larry: florida is now 0 for 10 from the three-point line. >> bob: here's smith. splits the defenders and laid it home. >> larry: absolutely amazing. the fact that he can receive that ball and operate down there without anybody really contesting him, i don't know why they don't drop somebody from the wing or the point down in his lap. if, in fact, macklin is going to play behind him. >> bob: dan werner hands it off. walker scoops it to macklin. up and in. on the second try. vernon macklin has six points. >> larry: i think that ball just popped out of his hand. >> bob: a steal by tyus. but he throws it to the sideline. boynton is able to claim it. here is walker for three. and macklin guides it in on the
