prosser, and over the last couple days we have heard one word to describe this game from both sides. that is emotional. >> dan: it will be emotional, but i have another word, familiarity. they not only have close ties to skip prosser, they have close ties to one another, so that means each side knows what the other side is going to do and i think that means your stars have to have a big game, and for wake forest their star is sophomore al-farouq aminu. he was really run the court very well. you can see he's averaging a double-double. i think he has to have a big offensive game for wake forest to have success. and jordan crawford for xavier, this guy is an outstanding offensive player. he shoots the ball very well, but he also can get his teammates involved. he has to have a big game as well. >> ron: this is the second meeting between these two teams. the first was back in '99 in the nit. xavier beat wake forest and their coach skip prosser. we'll have more on skip prosser we'[ male announcer ] the lexus

opening tip-off in the skip prosser classic between xavier and wake forest, and as we just talked about a few moments ago, it's been an emotional couple of days for both staffs. here is jenn hildreth. >> jenn: i'm not sure you could find two teams more closely intertwained than these two. i spoke with pat kelsey who spent the last eight years here at wake forest, and he said prior to this year when they knew they'd have to face each other, these two teams shared literally everything, and, of course, their familiarity all steps back to skip prosser whose teachings and tiphilosophies ca still very much be seen. both teams will be wearing a patch to commemorate the skip prosser classic.

>> ron: moments ago they had a video board tribute for the late skip prosser and it was an emotional one. his family was on hand. the staffs of the respective teams also on the floor, and they had a chance to look up, the mother and the wife and the rest of the team, members of his family as this tribute was being played and i think, to say the

least, it was touching to everybody that's here at joel coliseum. let's take a look at tonight's starting lineups. let's look at xavier. they had wins over cincinnati and lsu already today. head coach in his first year is chris mack. he will start love, frease, lyons, holloway and crawford and wake forest, they come in with a couple losses at home, william and mary and purdue. three guards, smith, williams, and c.j. harris, aminu and david weaver also get the starting nod tonight for wake forest. the officials for tonight's game, it is an outstanding crew as usual. we are just moments away from the opening tip-off between these two teams. wake forest 10-2, 6-1 at home. they have had one acc victory over north carolina state. xavier 0-2 on the road coming in this game. when we were talking about this game and seeing the familiarity,

does it come down to the back court if you're wake forest? >> dan: ron, it's very interesting. wake forest has to be able to get ishmael smith off. he's got to be able to get into the lane, create opportunities for al-farouq aminu and his teammates. for xavier jason love has to be able to battle effectively inside. xavier has to fight off wake forest inside and for wake forest they have to win the battle of the backcourt. >> ron: aminu and love set to tip it up in winston salem. we're under way. this is smith, the senior out of concord, north carolina. averaging over five assists a game. baseline reverse, no good. aminu fights for the rebound, got it. loses the ham. al-farouq aminu is a relentless rebounder but he doesn't handle the ball all that well.

averaging over three turnovers a game this year. they try to force it into aminu. they have three on the shot clock. smith looks up, launches it, and buries the three! his tenth of the year. >> dan: that will help because ishmael smith coming into the game only 16% from beyond the arc. don't expect to get that kind of a play from him, but he's a big shot maker. >> ron: wake forest not known as a three-point shooting team. xavier, however, is. here is crawford. he is an outstanding shooter. holloway has it, knocked away by smith. he had four blocks in one game earlier this year, and you talked about aminu not being a ball handler. holloway to the hole, and he is going to be fouled hard by ishmael smith. >> dan: ishmael smith coming into the game, 4 for 24 shooting three-point baskets. the shot clock is running down. they figure they can give him the three, but knocks it down.

>> ron: he was 1 for his last 8 beyond the arc prior to this three he just hit. we get our first look at terrell holloway. mack saying he wasn't disappointed in his play last year as a freshman, but he expects more this season. you can see as far as free throw shooting, this is an outstanding free throw shooting team. >> dan: an outstanding free throw shooter. you want to keep holloway off the line, that's for dog gone sure. make him beat you some place else. >> ron: aminu off the glass for his first two. >> dan: man-to-man defense by wake forest. xavier likes to run ishmael smith off a lot of screens. xavier didn't handle it very well on that particular occasion. >> ron: crawford tries a quick move. williams cuts him off. williams probably the best defensive player on this wake forest team.

>> dan: xavier's guards are always closing with that dribble. talked before the game about al-farouq aminu and the kind of skills he has. most noted for his ability to play in the full court situation, but here he just slides to the basket. they anticipated ishmael smith coming off the screen. he didn't do it. aminu was wide open. >> ron: of course, wake forest lost jeff teague and jeff johnson from last year's squad. both in the nba now. smith, nice pass inside. weaver can't finish it, and here comes xavier. they like to push it. lyons over smith. >> dan: wake likes to push it as well. >> ron: but it all starts with number 10, ishmael smith. >> dan: a great job by lyons to keep him out of the lane. >> ron: aminu locks the handle, turns it over. >> dan: he gets in a crowd, he tends to lose the ball. >> ron: outside crawford nails the three. we are tied at five. xavier is an outstanding

doesn't move that well. it's tough for him to keep smith out of the lane. >> ron: quickly down on the other end. love tries to force up the shot. mcfarland battles. it belongs to xavier with 16:42 in the first half. >> dan: ishmael smith takes the call and sets the screen. smith comes off and he goes right by frease. who is seven feet tall and well over 260 pounds, just can't move his feet quickly enough. >> ron: last night at their practice, they said you can't let this guy split the defense. i mean, chris mack was on had his team about it. >> dan: it's great to have the plan. it's harder to execute. >> ron: execute it. crawford showing some hops, and he's fouled on the play, and he will go to the line. foul is on l.d. williams, his first personal foul. at the line it will be jordan crawford, a sophomore out of detroit, michigan. played for indiana a couple years ago, sat out last year.

was on the scout team. chris mack telling us during last season even when he was on the scout team, he was probably the most talented player they had. >> dan: he makes plays, he makes shots. he's a guy who plays really well with his back to the basket. we already saw he can run in transition and shoot the three. he's going to be a handful to the defense tonight. >> ron: he's the one who got all the publicity for dunking on lebron james this summer. another whistle and a foul. wake forest will retain possession, leading by one. we see his average, the last player to go 17-plus a guy by the same of david west now with the new orleans hornets. l.d. williams comes up short on the jumper. it will belong to the musketeers. >> dan: ron, for wake forest to have success tonight, they are going to have to make those shots, even the highly contested

lexus playbook tonight. we talked about dribble penetration, dan. >> dan: a lot of teams love to attack the basket off the dribble. that's what we mean by dribble penetration. very few teams do it as well as wake forest because very few teams have an ishmael smith. here is the screen right there. mcfar lend setsland sets a scre. ishmael smith penetrates by, the guys don't get to him in time. as a result he gets to the goal. >> ron: ari stewart has checked into the lineup for wake forest and jenn has a little more on ishmael smith. >> jenn: as we watch him go to the basket again. he's always been known since he first got here as a quick player who could get to the basket. i said, all right, defenses are going to get an idea and try to stop it. how have you progressed? he said i pick and choose my shots now. as a freshman i went 100 miles an hour all the time. no i don't mind going 25 or 50

and then accelerating to 100. >> dan: decision making certainly helps in the ability to put the ball in the basket. scoring numbers very important. >> ron: first time in his career he's averaged double figures. he's vowed to be a little more serious this year, but we've seen him smile almost the entire time. he's still a happy camper. >> dan: one thing he doesn't smile about is he's not a very good free throw shooter. l.d. williams with the rebound. >> ron: one thing we notice so far is xavier's lack of ball movement. >> dan: they have to move the ba you will from si ball from side to side. >> ron: crawford gets held up by williams. that's going to be a travel. that will be another turnover on xavier. that's their third turnover. they don't turn the ball over a lot. >> dan: talked about wake forest and their ability to score close to the basket. l.d. williams with the pull-up jumper. he's not known as a big offensive threat, but he has the kind of skilts that if you let

him get close to the basket, he can jump up over everybody and score. >> ron: wake forest coming off an overtime win earlier this week over richmond, 74-68. gaudio says the best game they had this year because they showed toughness. aminu comes out of the pass. >> what a pass! >> ron: inside, mcfarland has it blocked. >> ron: the ball handling wasn't pretty, but the pass was good. >> dan: looked a little awkward, but this is a 6'9" guy taking the ball up the court in a fast break and he gets the ball inside to mcfarland. that's a basket that mcfarland has to score. >> ron: mcfarland comes in only a 58% free throw shooter. coming off a double-double against richmond, 13 points and 12 rebounds. he goes to the line about four

times a game. he needs to knock them down. lead is five, biggest for the ball game for wake. crawford sees the double, pass on the inside knocked away. mcfarland comes up with it. quick outlet to l.d. williams and he has to regather himself. >> dan: c.j. harris running the point now. smith getting a bit of a breather on the bench. >> ron: aminu pops up high. mcfarland can't finish it out. that's kind of a silly foul. that's going to be an mcfarland. >> dan: i made the point before and i don't want to keep harping on the thing, but wake forest has had how many opportunities at pointblank range, contested opportunities to be sure, but if you have a big, strong team, you need to convert those. >> ron: weaver is going to come back in and al-farouq aminu takes a little bit of a breather. xavier has also had the cold streak. they have had no field goals for the last four minutes plus.

last field goal was at 17:31. but this time the bank is open. crawford with the deuce. >> dan: there's the foul on frease, i believe, but xavier's first offensive look seems to be to drive the ball to the basket, particularly with crawford. this is just a very powerful move right there, and that's fine as long as the ball is going in. but if your offense is nothing but dribble penetration, the guys tend to start standing around. the ball has got to move from side to side a little bit more. >> ron: one of the things with xavier last year is they didn't think they had anybody that could have a little dribble penetration. crawford gives them that. lead down to three. mcfarland is fouled on the shot. that might be against frease. if it is, that will be his second, i think. that is his second personal. >> dan: these are two seven-footers going at one another, and it's a situation for frease, he's not really a shot blocker, and he tries to get up and block the shot. get your hands up.

you don't have to slap him on the elbow. just make the shot difficult. >> ron: at the line it will be mcfarland. hasn't started the last three games. and you can see in their wins wake forest is able to connect from the stripe, but in their two losses and you pointed it out later this week, minus 17.5 from the line. >> dan: you've got to get to the line, and then you've got to convert your opportunities from the line, and early in this came wake is leaving some points at the free-throw line. >> ron: so far wake forest 3 of 6 from the stripe. mcfarland had it, had it swatted away. that's going to be another foul. >> dan: mcfarland has really played well on the boards. we talked about crawford and his ability to get to the basket, and in transition he's going to try to beat the wake forest defense. that is a very, very shot, and you have to be impressed with the way mcfarland, who was a couple steps from the basket, is able to get that rebound over

top of jason love. >> ron: the lead is four, wake forest with the advantage. crawford talking to coach mack. out front here is c.j. harris, the freshman, three times already acc rookie of the week. bodies going down, and i think that's going against love. >> dan: that's a strange foul. love picked up the foul while he's laying on the ground. i think he grabbed weaver by the ankle. >> ron: take a look at chris mack, turned 40 on wednesday. former player for xavier. actually was the captain for a couple years, '91 and '92. xavi xavier's director of operations under skip prosser and then went

to wake where he was an assistant with skip for three years. a personable guy. >> dan: got some foul problems for xavier now. >> ron: a little bit more on the ohio native. came back to xavier when sean miller was hired. considered at that time one of the best assistants in d-1 and an outstanding recruiter. >> dan: both love and frease, their two starting big men, on the bench with two personal fouls apiece. >> ron: that's on a 7-2 run, make that a 9-2 run. >> dan: just as we're talking about the two starting big men are on the bench, dante jackson throws it inside to jamel mclean, and he's able to power it up there. mclean started eight games early in the season.

he's 6'8", 235, so he's not a little guy, and he just powered it right up through mcfarland. mcfarland now has to go to the bench with a couple fouls. >> ron: you see the numbers on mclean. spent a year at tulsa. started the first nine games but he knew he wasn't playing well, so they brought him off the bench, and now he's beginning to understand that role a little bit better, but this xavier team is so much better when mclean gets production. smith back in the lineup for wake. >> dan: xavier did a nice job that time preventing ishmael smith from getting into the lane. >> ron: turnover. that's wake's fourth of the ball game. redford, can't leave him open, and he drains the three. he's hitting 50% beyond the arc. a 6-0 run by xavier. inside aminu, a spin move, sees a triple team and he is fouled.

>> dan: wake forest has one of the top three-point defenses in the country, but it's really difficult to defend any basket intransition. nobody is around redford. it's hard to find him in transition. i tell you what, when this kid gets his feet set, he just doesn't miss. >> ron: he led the a-10 last year, leads them this year in three-point percentage, but even in today's shoot around this morning, gaudio was telling his team you do not leave this guy open. somebody has to pick him up the second he's in the ball game. >> dan: and that's all and well when you can find him. but this was a scramble situation. you can't always find him. >> ron: aminu missing the second free throw. the lead is just one, just about 12 minutes left in the first half. aminu with a rejection! his 15th of the year. >> dan: that's a
