aminu. you have to get in front of it. >> ron: xavier down by one. smith, they set things up again. works off a screen. he'll launch the three. mcfarland, the offensive rebound. inside on frease, no. we've got a whistle, and that's going to be a foul on wake forest. >> dan: foul is on l.d. williams actually. it wasn't on mcfarland. l.d. williams ran over mclean i think underneath. >> ron: got to hold onto it there. >> dan: that's holloway, i think, trying to block out. l.d. williams just moved him out of the way. that's a tough break for wake forest. >> ron: five lead changes already just in the second half of this ball game.
7:01 pm
xavier with the ball, a chance to take the advantage again. holloway and smith, that's a nice match-up out front. l.d. williams stays in the ball game. that's going to be a foul against xavier. >> dan: frease. >> ron: yeah. >> dan: you know, mcfarland has a way of being in the middle of everything. and now, you know, we're in a situation where that's the third foul on frease, and love has also picked up his third foul here early in the second half. >> ron: hang on. there may be some technicals because coming down the court chas mcfarland and jamel mclean were talking to each other. mclean pointing to his head. mcfarland walked over to him on the far end. they call a foul on l.d. williams. >> dan: a technical foul on l.d.
7:02 pm
williams. that's his fourth foul. >> ron: and one on a xavier assistant. >> dan: the xavier bench gets a technical and l.d. williams gets a technical. the xavier bench can't foul out of the game. l.d. williams, who is their best defensive players, he's had his hands full with crawford the entire night, now he's picked up his fourth personal foul with 16:16 left in the game. for xavier you have your starting big guys both with three personal fouls, but for wake forest you have your best defensive player on the bench with four fouls, and you have al-farouq aminu playing with three. >> ron: mcfarland also playing with three. inside, can't get it to go, but another whistle and another foul. very physical ball game tonight. >> dan: it's just like a conference game. >> ron: exactly. >> dan: when you get in conference play, whether the acc or the a-10, the teams know one another so well that it's very
7:03 pm
difficult to have it look smooth and fluid, and as we mentioned before, these coaches have very close ties to one another both personally and professionally. they know one another so well, it's just like conference play. >> ron: you look at the associate head coach for xavier, pat kelsey, who was at wake forest for eight years. left -- there's a quick shot of him. former captain of the xavier basketball team, worked with xavier's big men just like he did at wake forest. he told me today i learned so much from dino gaudio who also coached the big men. there's that familiarity again. >> dan: pat helped recruit all these guys at wake forest, and wake continues their struggles from the free-throw line. >> ron: 13 of 24 from the stripe. short on the jumper. here comes c.j. harris up to smith. >> dan: i think ishmael smith needs to be a little more

about skip prosser is he never had an enemy. a true gentleman, out of carnegie, pennsylvania. four-point lead for wake forest. crawford can't cut it down. >> dan: big job for ari stewart. he's going to match -- >> ron: oh, my, what a pass from smith to aminu! >> dan: aminu once again showing you his ability to run the court. great pass by smith. >> ron: 7-0 run now by the demon deacons. they lead it by six. >> dan: here is that match-up we talked about. ari stewart against jordan crawford. >> ron: redford, they want to make him put it on the floor. >> dan: make him do anything but shoot. >> ron: yeah. and harris sticks right to him. ten to shoot. mclean shuffles his feet. here comes smith, hasn't taken a shot in the second half. 4 of 4 in the first half.
7:08 pm
the floater won't go. the tip, aminu, put-back, count it. and xavier needs to talk about it. take a look at the last two hoops, dan. >> dan: wake forest, we talked about al-farouq aminu and his ability to run the court, and it's that ability to run the court and ish smith's ability to find him that results in the first basket. what else can he do? he's a pretty good offensive rebounder, and

putting this together. xavier just calmed down and just wanting to get back to what they are done. but then they let smith penetrate. >> dan: the transition defense has really not been there during this run by xavier. the run by wake, the xavier transition defense has been very, very poor. >> ron: clark has the assignment of guarding redford, not allowing him to shoot. crawford has been quiet in the second half. leans inside. mcfarland, nice job just tipping it to himself. here comes smith again. aminu, oh what a pass for the slam again! >> dan: they have to consider guarding him. at some point they ought to guard him. at least run down the court with him. >> ron: they spent about a half our of last night's practice, the musketeers, saying you have to stop number 10. the spin move, the shot, no. rebound putback by mcfarland. he's got it.
7:12 pm
count the basket. >> dan: that's why i think xavier will keep going. in the first half they won the battle of the blocks, in the second half they have not. but it's been in transition where wake forest has been able to get the ball to the forecast. ishmael smith has been outstanding pushing the ball up the court. scored that time, got the ball from aminu the time before. but when you're in a situation like this if you're xavier, throw the ball inside. make wake forest defend in there. >> ron: jenn hildreth on the sidelines, you heard what the coaches said like we did the last couple days. >> jenn: and i talked to pat kelsey before the game. i asked him, i said can you give a lot of good insight on wake forest? he said the single most important thing i told these guys, stop their transition offense. they have to play better defensively on the fast break. it's hurting them right now. >> ron: not a good pass, not a good catch. thank you, jenn. >> dan: there's the perfect example of what jenn was talking about.
7:13 pm
xavier made wake forest play in a half court set and that particular time they didn't handle it very well. >> ron: xavier likes to call their defense a pack line defense. it involves a lot of ball pressure, crowding the court with an imaginary line within the three-point arc. >> dan: i think they have to get love much more involved in this game than he has been. i don't think he's scored yet, has he? >> ron: i don't think he scored either. mclean can't get it to go. here comes the transition again. smith to the hole, pump fake, doesn't get it, but he got the foul. >> dan: jason love only has one field goal attempt in the first half, and i'm not sure he's attempted one in the second half. so here is ishmael smith. they're out in transition once again. he elects not to make the pass, draws the contact, gets the foul. now let's see if he can make the free throw. >> ron: he is 1 for 3 from the line so far. saw that little hesitation.
7:14 pm
that's what they're trying to get him to do. he hesitates right after he releases the ball. you can see the struggles. 29% his sophomore year. rebounded last season. that one looked good. you were watching the practice today and said the shot looks good. another turnover. 13 now -- >> dan: you can't just come down the court and without any pass just throw it inside to love. you have to make the wake forest big guys move side to side. >> ron: smith can't get it to go. love kept the rebound. over to holloway. lyons with a shot. that's the three, count it. >> dan: xavier is a team that plays very well in transition. it is off gary clark. >> ron: lyons drains the three, his 11th of the year. >> dan: he's also been a guy who has been relatively quiet
7:15 pm
tonight, but again we talked about wake forest's ability to play in transition. xavier is an outstanding transition team. we saw it in the first half, they got some open threes in transition, and they got one that time. >> ron: despite that 9-0 run, xavier within five. love was open for a second. they didn't get him the basketball. >> dan: if you're inside you're only going to be open for a second. you need to have the ball when you can do something with it. >> ron: short on the jumper. mcfarland comes up with it. here comes smith. mcfarland with the drive, no. we've got a travel. we'll go the other way. 11 turnovers in the ball game for wake forest. we've got 11:24 left to be played. wake leads it by five. mark, we have teams on both coasts that are interested. but milos only wants to play for dallas.

>> ron: at halftime xavier led by two, 43-41, now they trail. as we were going to break -- >> dan: big play in the second half. first of all, why is this seven-foot guy trying to drive all the way down the line. he traveled, and then he got hit in the nose, and he says a magic word to the referee and as a result chas mcfarland just picked up a technical foul. that's his fourth personal foul. you've got l.d. williams on the bench with four personal fouls. mcfarland, 12 rebounds. he's been outstanding rebounding the basketball. >> ron: but he has to sit down. >> dan: well, this is a young man that has had some problems throughout his career controlling his emissions. >> ron: my goodness. xavier's crawford misses both. >> dan: crawford has been relatively quiet in the second half. >> ron: only two points in the second half.
7:19 pm
that's the eight career technical for chas mcfarland. >> dan: that's a break for wake forest. they're not able to capitalize on that, but keep in mind that both mcfarland and l.d. williams are on the bench with four personal fouls for wake forest and al-farouq aminu has three. >> ron: dante jackson with four personals on the bench for xavier. that could have been a four-point play. crawford cannot get that. offensive rebound, love cannot put it back. aminu fights for the board and gets it and a whistle and foul. that's going to be on crawford. >> dan: he was reaching in trying to steal the ball and he bangs heads with ishmael smith. i hope they're both all right. they just cracked heads. my heavens. >> ron: let's look at it again. >> dan: without mcfarland in the game, love got to the rebound. my heavens.
7:20 pm
>> ron: oh, my. >> dan: my heavens. >> ron: and ish smith is up. crawford trying to shake it off, too, rubbing the face. ism smith from north carolina. crawford i think is going to go to the side to make sure he's got the cobwebs off. i think he hears a couple phones ringing, doesn't know which one to pick up right now. >> ron: they're just going to make sure he's okay. ish smith will go to the line. >> dan: that was a great looking shot. >> ron: yeah. 3 of 6 tonight, 14 points, 5 assists. taylor comes into the lineup. jamel mclean will sit down.
7:21 pm
the lead is at six. 10:55 to play in the second half. love needs to get back into it a little more and he does. nice looking move. >> dan: i think particularly with mcfarland out of the game that xavier has an advantage with the inside with the offensive ability of jason love. >> ron: 8-2 run now for the musketeers. the lead is down to four. >> dan: that was just poor defense by wake forest. you can't let love dribble the ball that long. >> ron: smith saw aminu with great position. taylor was trying to find him. >> dan: this is what i'm talking about with love, ron. he catches the ball about eight feet away from the basket, and this is a 6'9" guy, and that was not really a fast dribble. very ponderously he came across the lane. that's a nice move.
7:22 pm
if they're not going to stop you, go all the way to the basket. >> ron: aminu drew the foul and he's at the line. his ninth double-double of the year. >> dan: that's a great move. >> ron: holloway tries to penetrate, kicks it back up, and they'll set things back up. >> dan: holloway had aminu guarding him. he needed to take that ball to the basket. >> ron: and then he launches a long three. redford, look out. he's a marksman. can't get this one to go. >> dan: look at the effect of mcfarland being out of the game. xavier really hitting the offensive boards. >> ron: nice job by dante jackson. redford from nba range, misses his last two, and aminu comes down with it. nice pass, smith to aminu. another slam dunk. >> dan: and that's what happens when aminu gives it up. he gives it to ism smith in transition, he's going to get it back. >> ron: the little hesitation by
7:23 pm
smith before he threw him the pass is huge. >> dan: good play by aminu before getting a charge. >> ron: here is love working on weaver. a right-handed jump hook. he's got the last four points. >> dan: i'm not sure weaver can guard him one-on-one. >> ron: i don't think he can. smith tries to split the defense. they're going to call an offensive foul. that's going to be on weaver setting the pick, and he was sliding during it. >> dan: al-farouq aminu getting down, stops that time without getting the charge. stands underneath the basket and smith is able to find him. weaver is trying to get the offensive foul. love scores another basket. love, remember, only had one field goal attempt in the first half, but he's gotten going in the second. >> ron: 16 fouls on wake forest here in the second half. andrew taylor lets it fly, and he buries it. taylor averaging just over two points a game cuts the lead down

7:26 pm
he's done a very nice job being careful and not picking up that fourth foul. he has been very, very impressive in the second half. >> ron: holloway leads the a-10 in free throw percentage this year. holloway taking the drive to the basket. >> dan: aminu just does not reach in. that's what you have to do. sometimes he would have reached in, but that time he knows he's got the three fouls, can't get the fourth. you'd rather have him move his feet and prevent holloway from getting to the basket, but i think in that particular situation if you're wake forest you'd rather give up the two points than have aminu get his fourth foul. >> ron: he's made 29 of his last 30 free throw attempts now. harris backs it out with 7:55 to play in the ball game. >> dan: wake forest defense against the xavier perimeter with the exception of crawford

talked all night long about how they play similar styles. each of these teams like to set screens for the guy dribbling the ball and i think those ball screens and how those ball screens are defended may hold the key to the rest of this game. >> ron: well, we were going to honor skip prosser, and it would be a game we're seeing tonight. a tough game, good defense, solid offense. this is what the skip prosser classic is all about, the first of a ten-year contract between these two schools. as you mentioned at the top of the show, four players on wake's team either recruited or played for coach prosser. seven coaches among the two school had ties to coach prosser, and ishmael smith telling me today just exactly what skip prosser meant to him and all the other seniors on the team including chas mcfarland
7:46 pm
and david weaver. >> dan: you saw that fellow there with "win 4 skip." it applies to both of these teams. >> ron: yes, it does. final 64 seconds. do you think chris paul is elbowing david west right now saying we got you by two? basket goes down. nice job by holloway. >> dan: holloway is a guy who can really get to the basket. just uses his strength against smith that time. >> ron: only 3 of 12, but that was a big one. dino gaudio wants a time-out with 48.4 to play. >> dan: each coach very comfortable in terms of the time-outs. >> ron: take a look at holloway on the far end that tied this game up at 78 apiece. >> dan: there's the screen. it's a fake screen. he goes the other way, and ishmael smith thought he was going to the screen by crawford, but he faked him out and went to the baseline. as a result he got close to the basket and was able to score. >> ron: and you can see the
7:47 pm
time-outs remaining. neither team in trouble with 48.4 as far as time-outs. possession arrow belongs to wake forest. >> dan: we talked about the familiarity between these two teams. does that come even more into play now when every inbounds pass is so important? >> dan: particularly at the end of the game when you're calling time-outs and the team is throwing the ball inbounds. they run the same out of bounds plays. so that play that we just saw was something that dee know gaudio worked on with his guys and says they're going to come and fake this screen and so be careful you don't get caught up because he goes to the baseline and that's exactly what happened. >> ron: l.d. williams will trigger the inbounds pass. >> dan: shot chock at 26. >> ron: clemson/duke, they just tipped off, about an hour and a half away from us and we'll get you there as quick as this one ends. mcfarland on the right block trying to get position. aminu fending off mclean.
7:48 pm
williams, they're going to call the offensive foul, and they will. mclean forced williams out front. williams gets his fifth personal foul, and he will sit down. >> dan: they're trying to get it to aminu, but pretty good defense, and l.d. williams is going to get that call because he throws that left arm out there. now, the problem for wake forest is that foul occurred with 30.3 seconds left in the game. l.d. williams is out, and we've seen here in the last couple minutes how valuable he is both -- not only on the defensive end but with his ability to rebound the ball and score, but now the shot clock is off. xavier can hold the ball for the last shot if they choose to do so. >> ron: our first game was an overtime, north carolina state losing to florida by one. we've got 30.3 seconds to see if this one will end up likewise. >> dan: and i think what you will see xavier do is unless they get the perfect opportunity, they're going to run the clock down until there's
7:49 pm
just a few seconds left and then call a time-out to set up the final play. >> ron: a little token pressure now by wake. >> dan: if you're wake forest, you do not want to foul. play good defense without fouling. >> ron: and they'll call the time-out with 23 seconds. coach mack is going to set things up. >> dan: again, we told you the coaches have plenty of time-outs left. all he wanted to do was get the ball over half court. >> ron: clemson and duke have tipped off. we will send you to that ball game as soon as ours is over, but what a day of basketball here on "acc sunday night hoops." dino gaudio's team has got to play a little defense, but i think you made a great point. you can't afford to foul these guys because they're shooting 83% from the line tonight, xavier is. holloway, the leading free throw
7:50 pm
shooter in the atlantic 10. crawford is a 72% free throw shooter. they put redford in the game. he's an 83% free throw shooter. >> ron: and you can see the difference. >> dan: if wake forest ends up losing this game, you don't have to look very far to find a reason. >> dan: exactly right. you miss 16 free throws. final 23 seconds. crawford will inbound the basketball. oh, my. holloway slipped and very nearly lost the ball. smith on holloway. >> dan: and you look for holloway to take the ball and make the play. another time-out called by chris mack. >> ron: with 11.9 left to be played. how much of this is cat and mouse? >> dan: all of it is cat and mouse. this is a situation for xavier,
7:51 pm
out on the court they have got a number of guys who can penetrate to the basket. and, again, we talked about the fact that each team likes to set screens on the ball, and so i think what you're going to see is xavier is out of time-outs now. you're going to see a screen for the dribbler, and holloway defends that how chris mack's guys from xavier, how they attack that will show you what kind of shot you're going to get. they're great free throw shooters, so they don't care if they get fouled. >> ron: clemson and duke under way and we have an early score for you. clemson leading 5-4. as dan mentioned, xavier out of time-outs. the most important thing for the musketeers, you have to get the ball in. let's see what pressure wake puts on the inbounds pass. >> dan: basically only one post guy, frease, in the game. >> ron: and they hand the ball to crawford. >> dan: against a freshman. not noted for his defense.
7:52 pm
>> ron: holloway, three. no. and we are going to overtime, my friends. >> dan: what a great play by ishmael smith. did you see how high he got up to bother that shot? >> ron: let's take a look at it again. >> dan: ari stewart comes off the screen. watch smith jump into the ball. he may have actually blocked that shot. >> ron: we have an extra five minutes to play in winston-salem. tied at 78.
7:53 pm
7:54 pm
>> ron: pete gillen in attendance tonight. skip prosser was one of his assistants at xavier. you can see from '85 to '94. he went on to coach in virginia, now doing a little television work and his xavier musketeers tied up with wake forest. both teams 1-0 in overtime. xavier beat cincinnati and for the second game in a row, wake forest in overtime. they beat richmond in overtime a couple weeks ago. >> dan: i expressed surprise to see pete before and he said this game is the least i could do for skip, which tells you something about how people like skip and it also tells you about what kind of gentleman keith gillen is. >> ron: both teams have had a
7:55 pm
player foul out and overtime has started with ishmael smith. he has it poke-checked away. lyons sees a space, takes it with the left hand. may have spread out a little too far. no place to go. stewart left hand, no. rebound mclean. >> dan: i think everybody has sort of got to catch their breath here for a second. >> ron: not hyperventilate in the first 30 seconds. >> dan: ari stewart is a freshman trying to guard one of the best offensive players we have seen this year in jordan crawford. >> ron: aminu guarding mclean. for the three. >> dan: that was really good defense by smith. got back to pressure the shot. >> ron: he's done that a couple times tonight. >> dan: smith has had a great game. >> ron: absolutely. aminu on mclean.
7:56 pm
>> dan: a little bit of standing around for wake forest right now. >> ron: 11 to shoot, smith pulls the trigger! >> dan: a big shotmaker. >> ron: along with his eight assists has 21 points in the ball game. >> dan: coming off a screen not well defended by xavier. >> ron: here is crawford. mcfarland got a hand up, but he get the roll. >> dan: talk about a shotmaker now. >> ron: crawford now with 23 points in the ball game. the crowd is quiet right now. >> dan: almost seems like a scrimmage for a second. >> ron: 15 to shoot. smith gets a step on the defense. reverses it! >> dan: oh, my!
7:57 pm
>> ron: 15th lead change in the ball game. wake by two. out of bounds. >> dan: turnover. we talked about the stars, and ish smith has been one of the stars today. takes that little step back and knocks it down, and then here he just goes right to the baseline. holloway can't stay in front of him. what a great move to get away from the seven-footer. he's pulled out the whole bag of tricks tonight. >> ron: and they have a two-point advantage, 2:44 left in overtime. smith tries to split it, loses the harn the handle. here comes crawford. he gets picked by smith. and a time-out is called by xavier. they had the possession arrow anyway. >> dan: what a job though by smith coming from behind. ish smith saves the day right here. he has a career high in scoring with 23, but he pokes that ball away and very nearly comes up with it.
7:58 pm
now, xavier, this is a situation where kids automatically call a time out. they didn't need to because they had the possession arrow. >> jenn: in the break before this first overtime period, i was listening in on the wake forest huddle. i talked to the assistant coach corbean. he said the key is to drive with the basket. he saw that with smith. gaudio made a point to point up to that shot in the rafters and said, let's do it for this guy. >> ron: wow. >> dan: no pressure. >> ron: ishmael smith is an emotional player at times, and this is after the last one. >> dan: i think he's emotional and he's also tired. he has done about everything a basketball player can do in this game. he's got to be worn out.
7:59 pm
>> ron: all but one minute he has played in this ball game. we have 2:33 left in overtime. wake forest leads it, 82-80. and you can see the fouls, 10 and 8. i think this is about what we thought this game would be. in fact, last night after we talked to chris mack and he knew from xavier's point this was going to be an outstanding game, this was about what we thought it would be. >> dan: wake forest, you have to look at ish smith over there. this is a situation where you don't have a lot of time left in the game, but if you're dino gaudio, you might car calling a time-out you would not otherwise call to give him a breather. foul trouble could be a factor. you see two guys have fouled out. jackson and lyons both with four. mcfarland with four and
8:00 pm
al-farouq aminu, he had those three fouls halfway through the first half and he's done an outstanding job. i don't think he's been out of the game in the second half. >> ron: i don't think he has either, and here is holloway. 25 on the shot clock. redford wheels around, smith stays with him. smith trailing redford. >> dan: aminu matched up against crawford. >> ron: crawford will launch the three over him. too hard. another offensive rebound for the musketeers with 2:07 to play in the game. >> dan: aminu has pretty long arms. a little tougher to shoot over him from that distance. >> ron: on the drive, crawford scoop shot and in. >> dan: another offensive rebounding basket or a basket after an offensive rebound for xavier. >> ron: 25 points for crawford in the ball game. six 20-point games this year for him.
8:01 pm
1:40 to play. >> dan: the ball is going to be in the hands of smith and he's going to have to make a play. >> ron: 16 on the shot clock. splits the defense, looks up at the clock. on the drive, gives it up. mcfarland from seven feet. no. aminu's arm was being held as he went for that rebound. >> dan: boy, that is a great play by aminu. just to run to the basket. you know, mcfarland, everybody is holding their breath because he's shooting from beyond the free-throw line, but al-farouq aminu just runs to the basket and he's grabbed on the arm by andrew taylor. we talked about crawford and his ability to get to the basket and that's been a key in the second part of the second half for xavier. >> ron: here was crawford a moment ago, dan. >> dan: that's what we're talking about. he tried to shoot it over al-farouq aminu. didn't have any success so he drove the ball by him. aminu just missed another free
8:02 pm
throw. wake's struggle from the line continues. missed them both. >> ron: wow. >> dan: now you have to dig in defensively if you're wake forest. >> ron: we're tied at 82. aminu, 3 of 8 from the line. taylor pops up. nice backdoor. great defense. no, they're going to call it a jump ball, but it will be xavier's basketball with the possession arrow. >> dan: it was great defense. aminu and mcfarland both going after the ball. now your time-out saved the possession because that ball would have gone back to wake forest. >> ron: one minute left. holloway with ten to shoot. splits the "d," hangs in the air, loses the handle. to mclean inside. count the basket and mclean will go to the line!
8:03 pm
>> dan: for the demon deacons on defense, they did a nice job, but they weren't able to secure the basketball. aminu and mcfarland both go after the blocked shot there. they can't control the ball. nice pass by holloway. he's not going to challenge the big guys again. first time he challenged them and he loses the ball. second time they're both coming. he knows mclean has to be open. >> ron: career high for jamel mclean. i tell you, he did a great job of just regrouping after he got that ball because it looked like he was going to fumble it. 49.4 left to be played in overtime. a reminder, coming up next on "acc sunday night hoops" presented by pizza hut, it will be duke and clemson. a little score correction. clemson trailing by eight, 12-4. >> jenn: you guys talked earlier
8:04 pm
in the game about how mclean was kind of an "x" factor for the xavier team. there's no secret that he was kind of in the dog house for a few games, got taken out of the starting lineup, only played three minutes against butler. he told me he knew he wasn't playing hard enough in practice. i asked him why, he said, well, he wasn't really sure, but he believed in the coaches. he didn't put his head down. he tried to work harder, and i think we're seeing the results. he's coming off a double-double in the last game. now a career high and a rebound away from another double-double. >> ron: i think also following up, coming into this game he was just 4 of 14 from the free-throw line. tonight he's 8 of 9 to go along with the nine rebounds and 20 points. now, dino gaudio in a time-out like this, dan bonnor, is he not only talking about what if he makes it, what if he misses it, is he doing an offensive set also along with possible blocking out and the usual stuff? >> dan: i think, ron, in this
8:05 pm
situation with this amount of time left in the game, of course, he says if he misses it, we have to block out and get it, but i don't think wake forest will do anything differently whether he makes it or misses it. you have plenty of time. make sure you get the rebound, get the ball down the court, whatever you attempt, a two or three, you have to do it quickly. >> ron: two-point advantage, 47 seconds left in overtime. the freshman stewart with the right hand. mclean the rebound. he's got a double-double and he draws the foul with 35 seconds to be played. >> dan: stewart, no hesitation by stewart. he took the ball right to the basket, but i'm not sure in that situation that i would have wanted stewart particularly taking that shot. you've got smith and aminu both out there. i think i'd rather have them
8:06 pm
taking the shot, but he had an opening. you got to give crawford some credit. he got in front of him and made a tough shot without fouling. >> ron: aminu picks up his fourth. >> dan: here we showed you. now he's 8 for 11. coming in only 53%. even if he makes this one, it stays a up with-possession game. >> ron: there's a 0.4 difference between the shot and game clock and the lead goes to three. ish smith, looked for the opening. nice job, but then smith will take the three. oh, my! >> dan: good heavens! what hasn't he done tonight? you got to be kidding. >> ron: 26 points for ish smith. >> dan: and he's got all the wake forest points in overtime, and a guy who came in shooting
8:07 pm
15% from beyond the arc. 4 for 24 on the season. he has made three today. just keeps backing up. andrew taylor is trying to guard him, and the coaches -- we heard the coaches say yesterday, don't let him into the lane. andrew taylor didn't, but ish smith went out and hit the three. >> ron: look at the calm on that young man's face. >> dan: too tired to be excited. >> ron: too tired to smile right now. >> ron: 3 for 3. coming into the game he was 4 for 24 from beyond the arc. he's 3 for 3 today. >> ron: our first game of our triple-header, florida with a three-quarter court shot in overtime beat north carolina state, 62-61. we are in overtime and then duke and clemson coming up after us. >> ron: this was after the chas mcfarland technical early in the second half. jordan crawford went to the line
8:08 pm
and missed two free throws and xavier has been very good from the free-throw line. if they lose the game, they can look back on a play like that and wonder what if. unlike at the end of regulation where xavier was able to call a couple of time-outs to run the clock down, they have no time-outs left. they're obviously going to try to hold it to the last shot. >> ron: here is holloway with nine. looking for the pick. holloway to the hole. rejected by mcfarland! ish smith throws it up. no good. we're going to double ot. >> dan: wow. >> ron: chas mcfarland with his 14th block of the year, and it was a big one. let's look at the rejection again. >> dan: we talked about being able to defend the screen, and mcfarland, he was the guy who was guarding the screener and he just goes back into the lane. does a nice job moving his feet. good help by aminu.
8:09 pm
slows him down and allows mcfarland to block the shot. >> ron: and the reaction by dino gaudio. come on. he wanted him to hurry with 0.6. a lot of xavier fans here and in our hotel. everybody is getting treated to a heck of a game. second overtime straight ahead with xavier and wake forest in the skip prosser classic. >> ron: 85-85. along with jenn hildreth and don bonnor. those of you duke and clemson fans, i promise, we will get you to that game immediately following this contest, but we've got a dandy on hand. >> dan: what you can't promise, ron, is when this game is going to be over. >> ron: by tomorrow.
8:10 pm
and once again xavier led by two at intermission. we were tied at overtime and now we're going into double ot. a couple of story lines we've been following the stors. ishmael smith, al-farouq aminu have stood up. jordan crawford has indeed stood up for xavier, but you look at the numbers, what stands out if you're a wake forest fan, your team shot 51% so far in this game from the free-throw line. that hurts. >> dan: well, it hurts, but what you have to say, ron, is this is a wake forest team that obviously is a very, very gritty team, that they have not allowed the fact this they missed all those free throws to affect other parts of their game. they just played, and i have really been imprets ssed with c mcfarland. this is a young guy that got a technical foul called on him, his fourth foul, but he's really played well. he's been a rebounding and shot blocking factor late in the game and in overtime.
8:11 pm
>> ron: ishmael smith in overtime was outstanding, and that is the underestimate of 2010. >> dan: he knocked down threes, drove the ball to the basket, he made defensive plays. he has had a fabulous game. this three, just backs up and knocks it down. that ties the game. here we go again. >> ron: and we'll jump it up. xavier beat cincinnati in double overtime. last double overtime game was when they beat georgia tech 114-112. duke is leading clemson by six. >> ron: ari stewart just picked up his fourth foul. crayford has been crawford has been a major factor. now, aminu has four fouls. mcfarland has four fouls. stewart has four fouls. >> ron: and, of course, l.d.
8:12 pm
williams has fouled out for wake forest. >> dan: big free throws by crawford. >> ron: crawford, 27 points in the ball game. mclean and crawford have all their points in overtime. mclean has done a nice job, and now he's on aminu. aminu takes a step back, and he knocks it down. >> dan: boy, that's a tough shot. >> ron: very difficult over the outstretched hands of jamel mclean. knotted at 87. >> dan: here comes the screen. >> ron: nice roll by frease off the bank. mcfarland clears the board. >> dan: you have to have that one. >> ron: pointblank, aminu left open momentarily. mcfarland rolls to the hoop, and he is going to be fouled. let's go back the last couple of
8:13 pm
possessions. >> dan: al-farouq aminu i think has played a very smart game in the second half. hasn't tried to force anything offensively. knocks it down on the step back and the pick-and-roll very nicely set up. look at aminu, kept his hands up, stands still, doesn't try to block the shot and pick up the fifth foul and frease just doesn't get it over him. >> ron: 14 rebounds for mcfarland in the ball game. that's his third point. top of the show, which was approximately 2:45 ago and we talked about the two stars and here is what they have done. >> dan: and they have produced. >> ron: two big free throws by chas mcfarland. only a 58% free throw shooter. a minute gone by in the second overtime, lake by two. left open crawford just continues to assault the paint. >> dan: he went right into the lane and neither aminu nor mcfarland felt like they could
8:14 pm
challenge him. he's now got 29 points. smith has a career high and now crawford has a career high. >> ron: chas mcfarland tied his career high in rebounds with 14 tonight. smith does not look like he's lost a step. aminu over the outstretched hands of frease, short. look who comes up with the loose ball. dino yelling out the plays. smith gets it. closing in on three minutes to play in the second ot. smith. this man is unconscious tonight. two-point wake lead. inside of three minutes to play. >> dan: as good a performance as you'll want to see, ron. >> ron: can we just give him the
8:15 pm
acc player of the week right now? crawford leans in, tough shot, doesn't get it. loose ball. smith, harris to the hole. got to get back. crawford hesitates, draws the whistle. >> dan: either mcfarland or aminu has just fouled out. >> ron: mcfarland. he's done with five. >> dan: huts not to have mcfarland but as long as they have ishmael smith, i think they're in pretty good shape. another tough jump shot and then coming up with the loose ball and making the great pass. he has done absolutely everything tonight, and chas mcfarland now, only four points, but those 14 rebounds, a couple blocked shots, he's been a big factor late in the second half and in the overtime. >> ron: i loved the two-on-one
8:16 pm
there with ish smith with the basketball because, dan, so many times get a little panicky, should i shoot it, should i pass it? he just took his time, hesitated for a second, got the pass off. 28 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds for ishmael smith. you can see the foul trouble. mcfarland and williams are out. aminu and stewart with four. lyons and jackson with four for xavier. free throws missed by crawford. >> dan: we talked about how close these coaches are. if there's many more fouls, the coaches are going to have to play. >> ron: my money is on coach mack. >> dan: my money is on pat kelsey. >> ron: there you go. three-point wake forest lead. 2:21 to play and dino gaudio wants to burn one of his time-outs. >> dan: he's got plenty of them, and i think you want to make sure you run exactly the right play, and i don't think it's a bad idea to give ishmael smith a little bit of a blow here.
8:17 pm
>> ron: here is the problem. you have this emotional game not only because it's double overtime, but it's representing skip prosser, but both teams have to start conference play. this thursday xavier will be at la salle. then they go at georgetown before they play charlotte and dayton at home and then they have to visit number 18 temple. wake next saturday they will be at miami and that squad is an outstanding squad this year. boston college and then at home against maryland and then how about the 17th and 20th? and then the 23rd versus tony bennett and the cavaliers. this one is about skip prosser tonight. good crowd on hand honoring the former xavier and wake forest coach. i'm going to go out on a limb and say he's not a student. >> dan: continuing education.
8:18 pm
>> ron: following this game will be duke and clemson. duke leading by seven in the first half. 2:21 left in double overtime. >> dan: a challenge now for david weaver who is going to come off the bench and replace chas mcfarland.çó xavier with one time-out, wake with two, but david weaver, even though he started the game, he's been on the bench a long time and it's going to be really tough to come in cold. >> ron: three players have hit career highs in points in this game tonight, ish smith with 28, mclean with 21, and jordan crawford with 30. and ism smith has done so much more than that both on the defensive end and the offensive end. chris mack, former wake forest assistant, now head coach at xavier.
8:19 pm
he is going to be drained after this one. here is smith again. played every minute but one in this game. >> dan: they're just going to put everybody on the baseline and let ish smith go after holloway. >> ron: in the air. does he get the roll? no, rebound controlled by mark lyons. good block out inside. he wants to give the ball to holloway. >> dan: you expect holloway and crawford and mclean to be the guys who will be the shooters in this situation. >> ron: 15 to shoot. baseline cut off. no. taylor got it. >> dan: four to shoot. >> ron: holloway for three.
8:20 pm
back of the iron. >> dan: al-farouq aminu again does a nice job playing pretty good defense without committing a foul. >> ron: and we've got 1:10 to play. aminu way out front. they're really spreading it out now. >> dan: they're in the old four corners at the moment, and, of course, they can't run all the time off the clock. 15 left on the shot clock. >> ron: inside of a minute in double overtime. dino gaudio saying let's go, let's go. six to shoot. smith's spin move. aminu overjumped it. crawford has got it trailing by three. they've got to get something. holloway works off the pick. wanted the three, didn't see it. >> dan: plenty of time. >> ron: the three.
8:21 pm
rebound aminu. >> dan: got to foul right away. >> ron: and they're not going it. mclean tries to reach for aminu and finally does. that will be four on mclean with 13.7, but they lost four seconds on that. >> dan: given the struggles that wake forest has had from the free-throw line, they did lose some seconds, ron, but this game is far from over. >> ron: aminu at the line. only 3 of 8 from the stripe tonight. oh, my goodness. >> dan: now the second one gets much, much more difficult. if he misses this one, remember, this is the leading three-point shooting team in the a-10. >> ron: and look who just checked in, redford, number 12, the six foot sophomore out of michigan. >> dan: they have four really solid three-point shooters on the court. >> ron: aminu make it is a
8:22 pm
four-point game. 26 points for aminu ties his career high. dino gaudio has called a time-out. how big was that free throw by al-farouq aminu? >> dan: one of the things i think dino gaudio wants to talk to his guys about is there's a lot of time left in this game. you just don't want to let xavier run down the court and get an easy basket. that first game that we had on our "acc sunday night hoops" triple-header between florida and north carolina state shows you how the game can get stretched out and a team can hang in there with trading free throws and three-point baskets and things like that. so there's a lot of time left in the game and if you're wake forest, you want to play good defense. you don't want to foul, but you do not want to give xavier a quick, easy trip down the court. >> ron: last two possessions defensively wake forest has done a pretty nice job. >> dan: harris does a nice job on the inside cutting off the
8:23 pm
