steve buckhantz with ron thompson. first meeting ever between these teams. longwood went to division 1 just in 2004. they've played two acc teams this year at uva and virginia tech. they know something about hostile environments but this will be daunting to say the least. >> if the lancers are going to get it down it's going to be because of 6' 5 smith and 6' 6 carter. carter is the inside presence that they have. he is averaging 14.7 boards. he is a lefty so the terrapin bigs will have to be careful >> after tonight for maryland, 13 acc games to close out the regular season schedule. gary williams has them right where he wants them. they've improved in all facets, especially shooting from the field and three point range. >> sonny: the terps are doing ex lent from the perimeter. largely because of their safeties. when you come at them you put it on the floor so they are always a threat.

they'll start e.j. dawson with aaron mitchell, kevin swecker, billy robinson and dana smith has battled knee injures most of his career. he leads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per game. mike gilian in his seventh season as head coach of this team took the job back in 2003. has a record of 55 wins, 144 losses, but a big season last year when the team went 17-14, and gillian was named independent coach of the year by collegeinsider.com. terrapins are 11-5 overall, 2-1 so far in acc play. greivis vasquez has been blazing hot lately, averaging 23 and a half points a game, four rebounds and eight assists in the last two games and eric hayes averaging 11 points per game, fifth in the acc in three point shooting. big milestone coming up for gary williams. tonight his 999th game. he'll hit 1000 saturday when

>> steve: we are set to go from college park here on comcast sportsnet at the comcast center, the first ever meeting between these schools although longwood has played two acc schools already this season, losing to virginia and virginia tech. they have never beaten an acc school, lost all nine games they've played in the conference since they went to division 1 in 2004. have been quickly into the game we have a whistle and a foul. and it's a shooting foul which will send eric hayes to the line for 2. foul called on swecker, his first personal.

and eric has got a 60 -- correction, an 86% free throw shooter on the year. maryland quickly out to a 2-0 lead from the line. welcome to our coverage tonight, ron thompson along with steve buckhantz. and a terrapin pressure nearly forces a turnover and longwood has numbers. beautiful block by hayes out of bounds. >> ron: if there is any question tonight what the game plan is, pressure, run. pressure, run. got a steal on the first pass and as they were fouling out of bounds they had to throw it back in but got back in defense and got a stop. >> steve: ron, it seems to be that type of strategy every time a non-conference team comes in here. if you aren't prepared to handle it, you almost have no chance. and as i said before, longwood benefitted by the fact that they have been to -- down to charlottesville and they have been to virginia tech. >> ron: they aren't going to be surprised by anything that they see because of their schedule,

they have a tough schedule in general, so they're not going to be surprised. it's just a matter of whether or not they can deal with the heat and deal with the pressure for 40 minutes. >> steve: hayes battling, he gets a rebound and eric hayes now has 300 rebounds for his career. >> ron: and that's where maryland has the advantage. they have a huge advantage in terms of size. eric haze is a big guard, but longwood's players are 6' 6. >> steve: tremendous tip in but it won't count. smith came flying in and tipped it in beautifully but they say he's over the back. >> ron: as a coach you aren't upset at that. you want fouls going to the boards trying to get rebounds. as a coach not upset at all. an aggressive play trying to get a rebound. the key thing is dana cannot afford to get into foul trouble. >> steve: he is the big gun averaging over 16 points a game for the lancers. vasquez. drives.

pace to score 170 points in this game. >> ron: they're up 18-5, with 5:50 to play in the first half. >> steve: are you wondering about longwood? they're in the heart of the state of virginia, farmville. the same location as hampton, about 54 miles west of richmond. small enrollment, about 4700 students. actually the third oldest institution of higher learning in virginia after the college of william and mary and uva. they had a devastating fire on campus in 2001, rebuilt several buildings. school founded in 1839, became longwood college in 1949. and a co ed school in 1976. designated university status in '02 and in fact on the one-year anniversary of the campus fire is when they got their university status. and as you saw, the most famous alum is jerome kircy. a lot of people had no idea

has struggled, he hasn't scored that much tonight, and he is struggling to get his offensive game going, other guys have stepped up. >> steve: yeah. >> ron: that's what he said he wanted to see in this kind of game. who would be some guys who could step up. >> steve: that is the first point of the game for greivis vasquez in the last two games, he is averaging 23 and a half points, four rebounds and 8 assists. out of bounds. it will be longwood ball. vasquez had a season high 30 in the overtime loss at wake forest. straight game with at least 20 points or more. and he led maryland with 17 points in the win at boston college. he went 17-13 from the floor and that game had nine assists and a couple of steals. but has not been able to convert from the feerld here yet tonight. -- from the field here yet tonight. >> ron: did an excellent job of running the offense, getting

>> steve: maryland by 26 points with 3:46 to go in the 1st half, as gary williams has to be pleased with what he's seen so far. his team out running up and down the court and getting play off the bench. tonight's geico acc moment takes us back a week. january 10th at comcast center, the terps opening up acc play against -- against then 18th ranked florida state and maryland shooting 10 of 16 from beyond the arc. eric hayes went 5 of 6, he had 17 points. greivis vasquez had 17 of his 22 in the second half, including a huge three-pointer with two minutes to go. and the terps win it 77-68 over the knolls and then a win at boston college in convincing fashion for two acc victories. the one loss in overtime at lake forest. and the acc play will continue for maryland against nc state. coming up on saturday.

a big night for jordan williams, the freshman from connecticut. and he is getting lots of valuable playing time, ron. >> ron: he gets on the glass and doesn't just leave it up to the guards to finish the play. he runs right up under the rim. works, jumps two and three times. comes up with the present, has the put-back. >> steve: 7 rebounds for jordan williams along with 12 points. four of the rebounds on the offensive glass. you can see he's made 6 of 8 from the field. dana smith, the best player on this longwood team, ron, and you know, as we said before, a daunting task for them to come into this building, although they've gone to virginia, gone to virginia tech this year. you know, they're better than they know sat least tonight, for sure. >> ron: they really are. their record doesn't do them justice because of the amount of road games they have to play. this year alone they are playing 19 road games. and over the last four years, they have a home record of 37- 20. so if they were able to play a few more games at home, maybe get into a conference at some
