it's been one and done for virginia. mike petersen who is going to take a time-out. his deacons are up with 3:33 left and 53-47. >> debbie: mike petersen knows the same thing we know. monica wright has four. i wouldn't be surprised to see him isolate whoever monica wright is guarding because she has been on sandra garcia the last couple of trips because virginia is playing small. let's see if mike petersen puts the ball in the hands of the defender monica wright. >> mike: let's take a look at our fast break play of the game. we talked about the wake forest guards playing well. here is an example. >> debbie: thomas takes it to the rim. no one contests her offensively. she makes a nice crossover move and finishes. the smallest player on the floor getting all the way to the rim. >> mike: brooke thomas has been kind of up and down at times this year, but when she plays
2:46 pm
like this and also tiffany roulhac coming off the bench, what a lift it gives wake forest. >> debbie: there's not many games that brooke thomas has had more assists than turnovers. when she takes care of the ball, they are very solid in what they run. i said it in the first half she can take this entire wake forest team to another level when she executes and runs their stauf because mike

2:49 pm
forest create with their execution. soon dra garcia has had a fantastic basketball game and we said it at the beginning that she and waters had to have big games at home if wake forest was going to move above .500 and into fourth place in the acc. >> mike: brittany waters has only scored four points all in the first half but garcia 16 points and ten rebounds and edwards goes back to the free-throw line. >> debbie: you have to hit your free throws. >> mike: edwards now 4 for 5 on the line today. done a pretty good job there. >> debbie: now you're debbie ryan and looking at the score. it's five points. it's a two-possession game. you is your. you ask your team can you get two stops and come down and make a good choice offensively. >> mike: roulhac is running the
2:50 pm
point now for wake forest. looked inside to garcia. >> debbie: a switch. >> mike: gerson is on garcia, a little bit of a mismatch. >> debbie: virginia is switching right now on all screens. >> mike: shot clock at five. roulhac is going to be fouled by lexie gerson. good job by roulhac who, we said, has missed a good part of the last two seasons seasons with injury. now healthy. has hit two threes today. her first trip to the free-throw line. roulhac now just 4 for 10 on the season from the line. >> debbie: she has had a solid game backing up brooke thomas. made good choices. >> mike: edwards, as wake comes up with one on that possession. gerson, what a try to the
2:51 pm
bucket! lexie gerson. she's in double figures with ten. >> debbie: now you've got it to four. you've got to rely on your defense right here. virginia was switching on everything last time down. >> mike: cavaliers need a stop as we're under 2:30 to play. >> debbie: look at secily ray trying to post up monica wright. if they can get monica wright out. >> mike: five seconds on the shot clock. rebound by the cavaliers. almost taken away by courteney morris. what a good play by morris. another possession for wake forest. >> debbie: another senior for mike petersen making a play. >> mike: roulhac. kick-out to morris. garcia. not afraid to shoot from out there. has not hit a three today.
2:52 pm
>> debbie: has taken three of them, though. >> mike: 1:30 to play. an opportunity here. virginia cannot afford an empty possession. moorer spinning it off the glass! ariana moorer! and it's a two-point game! look at the defense by virginia! >> debbie: good defensive fake by lexie gerson. that's the kind of play that doesn't show up on but this one does. spin in the middle of the floor. off the window. it's the second time we've seen her use the glass right in front of the him. >> mike: moorer with 1 points, has been a factor here in the second half. this is as close as virginia has been since it was 34-33. again, that shot clock winding down for wake forest.
2:53 pm
collier. garcia, the rebound and the put-back! that's a big bucket by sandra garcia. under a minute to go. last touched by virginia. >> debbie: monica wright didn't get a chance to get down the floor. watch the rebounding ability by sandra garcia. she has played down the post highway. main street. >> mike: again just a four-point game. good defense play by moorer. wright for three. on the follow, it won't go! whitny edwards was right there with the offensive rebound. just didn't go. foul is going to be on kellum. >> debbie: the first three-point opportunity monica wright has had all game. wake forest defensive game plan
2:54 pm
smothering monica wright, has limited her in the second half. monica wright who leads the acc in scoring, 13 points in the game, 11 in the first half. >> mike: courteney morris will be at the free-throw line after the time-out. there are your marquee players took today. monica wright has been held down as debbie said in the second half just missing that three a moment ago which would have been huge. what a game for sandra garcia, the freshman from hollywood, florida. >> debbie: she has been so good and the numbers for what you don't see reflected in those numbers is her movement without the ball, her screening ability, the way she opens up other shooters and occupies space on the inside. >> mike: you saw the game reset. both teams with time-outs left. both teams in the double bonus.
2:55 pm
again, it will be morris who has just one field goal today. courteney a senior from riverdale, maryland. one of the few seniors on this team as debbie told you that contributes. courteney morris. and tiffany roulhac. missing the free throws. making 1 of 2. door is still open a little bit for virginia. >> debbie: collier has done the best job all game face-guarding. >> mike: what a great bucket by moorer. quick time-out. >> debbie: she has looked to get to the front of the rim and aggressive. you have to keep her in front right here. she just crosses up tiffany roulhac and no represent help. >> mike: that bucket makes this a one-possession game at 57-54.
2:56 pm
>> debbie: you know virginia is going to bring pressure here and switch on everything. i think you got toing for the steal and then gout to look to foul right away. you cannot allow with only one second differential, very much time to go off the clock. >> mike: 31.2 left in the game. >> debbie: secily ray catches it, you might consider fouling her. camille collier catches her, she doesn't go to the line very much. you might want to put both of them in situations where they have to make pressure free throws. >> mike: collier only to the line six times all year. secily ray shooting below 60% from the line at 57. here is garcia. they are going right after it. sandra garcia will go to the line where she is four for five on the afternoon. whitny edwards commits the foul.
2:57 pm
so now garcia has a chance to really help her deacons towards a victory here. already 18 points, 11 rebound. >> debbie: she needs this to make it a two-possession. now for virginia, i don't think you need the three, mike. i think you can push in transition, score quickly. try to extend the game. >> mike: monica wright and whitny edwards the two best three-pointers on the floor for virginia. the key there as you said, debbie, now a two-possession game at 58-54. so virginia doesn't have to get the three but they do have to get a puckett down on the other end. acc sunday night hoops continue later on today.
2:58 pm
maryland takes on clemson and then virginia face north carolina. it's a double-header today and starts at 5:30. check your local listings. how many times has debbie ryan been in this kind of situation? >> debbie: oh, gosh. in her 32 years, a lot. but part of the reason she is a hall of famer because she figures out a way. >> mike: the bottom line is the cavaliers have got to score here and score in a hurry. full-court pressure. >> debbie: that's who you want to have the ball. >> mike: wright has a good look. doesn't hit off the glass. and a foul by gerson and wake will go to the line down the other way. >> debbie: wake was not going to foul and that is who you want to make that play is monica wright. >> mike: wright 6 for 16 from
2:59 pm
the field and secily ray goes to the free-throw line. ray 6 for 7 from the line this afternoon. and that is a big one. >> debbie: wake forest put themselves in a position to win all game. their execution on the offensive end. their defensive game plan around taking monica wright out is really a blueprint for how to tackle virginia. >> mike: ray in double figures. moorer a block and comes up with it. sandra garcia another great play and looks like wake forest is going to get their fourth win in league play and how special about lthat be for mike petersen and the deacons? >> mike: you have to go back to the '80s to find a time when wake forest finished with a winning record in league play.
3:00 pm
>> mike: wake's other three wins, virginia tech, miami, and last time out, beat clemson. >> debbie: last year, they did get to 4-4 in league play. so they were at .500 a little bit later. than early february. but this would be a huge win and a win over a ranked team to give them a signature win on their resume. >> mike: twenty points on the game for sandra garcia. here comes wright. what a job they've done on her defensively. gerson banks it in! 62-57. 6.7 left. virginia had some opportunities here. they led early 6-4. wake forest led by eight at
3:01 pm
halftime 29-21. virginia goes on a run to start the second half and cuts it to one at 34-33 and, at that point, wake goes on a 10-2 run and really been in control of this game ever since. >> debbie: we've seen some crazy things happen in the acc so far this year. we've seen a lot of upsets in conference play and quite frankly, it's not that surprising. i think the league is so close this year that seeding in the acc tournament is going to be such a fine line and it's going to matter what your matchups are as to who wins but, clearly, duke showed us friday nir nooirt the best team right now. >> mike: coming up for virginia, they are home thursday against clemson and a week from tomorrow, they are at maryland for wake forest, their next game will be friday at virginia tech and then a week from today, at florida state. so the deacons go on the road
3:02 pm
for two. this game has to give them a lot of confidence. remember, they played today without many fans in the stands because of the bad weather. they've sold a lot of tickets for this game. this was a packed house game but with the inclement weather outside, a lot of folks stayed home and they missed a good one. >> debbie: jump ball. >> mike: possession arrow to the cavaliers but only 5.2 left. >> debbie: see if you can get a quick three. >> mike: secily ray intercepts the pass and that is going to do it. that will seal the deal for wake forest. monica wright bows out of the game with 13 points and 7 rebounds for monica wright. certainly not the game she
3:03 pm
expected. and not what she has been doing in recent games, but you know monica. she'll be back thursday at clemson. >> debbie: every coach in the league, though, is going to see what mike petersen did to try to contain her. a lot of teams have tried face-guarding her but virginia didn't have enough players make enough plays besides monica wright. >> mike: the point is if you're going to face-guard her, somebody else and maybe gerson who hit a couple of threes late in the game and ariana moorer and chelsea shine, somebody has really got to come through for the cavaliers. kellum misses it at the buzzer. and wake forest has upset virginia and that is our gatorade player of the game, no doubt about it, debbie, sandra garcia. >> debbie: what a great afternoon for the freshman. another double-double for sandra garcia. >> mike: so congratulations to the wake forest deacons 13-8 and
3:04 pm

their tickets to miami. this week was breaking down the games. what our panel thought about them. >> and they are putting licks on. >> he and farve, they will get to farve they take a hit and they take a licking and keep on ticking. >> farve's his ego makes him get up. once he was hurt he was throwing balls without velocity. within you look at the things that you go into the game. and he is on the jet's team. >> and very good. why didn't he play yesterday? number 21 was getting hit. lit up. and after about two big catches you bring sheppard off the bench. you stop, you go to if you can stop one of those guys garson

but..., lowery. >> this the one but 21 was ate up the rest of the day. >> i see your point about manning. >> and that's not your typical you could not -- i could not pick off the street. >> peyton manning could. and he did. >> you know the one thing we have not discussed this is not to take away from manning but the colts defense gave up plays early particularly the big one. but that's a good defense. they shut the jet. jets down. they played well

great college basketball is and this week it was great hoops and we'll break it town. >> acc, virginia 3-1 in conference play. virginia tech, probably needs it. to virginia. in good position now. >> they have a chance not just in the acc which is wide open as you said but in terms of getting that bid for the nca tournament. the thing they have in common. neither one played under the circumstances way in or made an impact in non-conference playment that's why the game is more critical. this he have to win to make a statement. other than that. it is crazy. >> it is wide open. >> it's not as strong as they say the big east but it's not as bad at the bottom. they have to get back to playing the defensive with tony bennett wants to instill there. that's not the case against
3:19 pm
wake forest. >> they gave up 69 points, they have to really buckle down. >> i mean they have to score more. >> that, too, they are giving up 60 a game. he said the same thing i watched that like you know he gave up 69. they fell behind. we're getting ahead on the game. and first time they met since 1990. and 73-56. early and hitting 3s. and bying gear and going nuts. they clamp down and never got involved they could get no penetration and are they that good? >> i think they are. and recently against west virginia, they impressed me the length and wes johns. i didn't expect this this year.
3:20 pm
to lose. lose flynn and be in a position now. they're in solid position for a number one seed if it started today. they have an impressive resume the zone is effective the way that, they have seven guys out there. >> they have length. >> all the ground. they have side. size and length. they are long. and to see that. i thought it had the feel of an old time syracuse game of 20 years ago. no one hit the floor. there is no old school semi violence that's where you had. >> and vaughan was my only hope. i like georgetown, some are overboard i think they are fit i like monroe but he floats. last night i saw a guy give

credit where it is due. and drifting and the 3 point line. what are you doing. old man must have been going nuts. this he he could not find him. >> i think the flaw with the team is death. they don't have -- coming off the bench that you can count on but you have a chance to get to the sweet 16. but after that you have to get contributors off. i'm surprised they cannot get them the ball more. >> and i was disappointed. they could not get the penetration. they are playing there. ad see he what happens when they come to dc. they will. and calhoun on the win list. something ridiculous. and they found themselves. they are a good team.
3:22 pm
they played the toughest schedule but to beat texas that surprised me and it was coming off a loss itself. but you know uconn is talented. george is an experienced coach i'm not surprised they are making a move now. let's talk terps. against miami acc start. see what happens there. but they need 9 or 10, they have not done it so far in the resume but when you compare it they had the win over much mix state. they don't have that no bad looses it should be in the tournament but the they squandered opportunities to get the victory. that means they will have to win 9 or 10 games. can they do it? they have the league it is wide open.

bears have ventured into the desert. the two top teams in the pac 10, the cal bears and the arizona the cal bears and the arizona wildcats. caption funding provided by fox sports net >> today the wildcats host the bears. the cal bears are the most experienced team in the pac 10 with not one, but three excellent shooters who are golden beyond the arc. >> we have not just one, but to be able to take the pressure off just one, we have two other players that shoot the ball from the perimeter. >> dangerous indeed. the cal golden triangle of randle, christopher and
3:31 pm
robertson all have surpassed the thousand points mark in their careers. on the other side of the court, freshman derrick williams is bringing the house down in tucson. he's the wildcats' leader scorer and the highest scoring freshman in the conference. the old guard against the young cats. cal on the road against arizona as both teams position themselves for a shot at the conference finals. pac 10 action now! we are at the mchale center in tucson, arizona for pac 10 hoops presenteded by kfc today. it's the cal bears against the arizona wildcats, and let's take a look at the pac 10 standings after last night's games.

you see what is at stake in this game. number one california at 6-2, arizona at 5-3, right on their tails. welcome courtside, marques johnson, darren horn ton, great to have you with us. we have the game of the week. talk about this match-up, arizona has been one of the surprising stories here in pac 10. >> this whole season has been a surprising story. my mantra has been expect the unexpect unexpected. cal has separated themselves. we know one thing for the certain, the winner of this game will be number one at the pac 10 at the halfway point going into february which is huge. >> one team that has lived upped to the expectations is cal. they were expected to be in front early on. due in large part to their massive experience. >> no substitute for experience. a lot of teams pretty much equal. you look for the edge. it's the experience. especially these three guys well over 100 games. they're really familiar with
3:33 pm
each other. jerome randle talked about the old guard, the elder statesman blazing a trail for the younger players. >> we know once we step on that court, you know, it's business. one thing we have to do is try to teach the younger guys and show them the ropes and let them know the importance of being out there on the court and keeping your head. and this is really tough to play on the road, especially with a great team. we just have to try to lead by example. >> you talk about teaching the younger guys. for arizona their young guys have grown up quickly, particularly their freshman derrick williams. >> he's grown right before our very eyes, 215 pounds at 6'8", now 240 pounds, terrific skill set, especially the foot work, catching to basketball, finishing in traffic. derrick williams does a great job for this basketball team. he is averaging in the pac 10 games, 17 points a game, doing a nice job knocking down over 81%
3:34 pm
of the free-throws, 61% from the field. he's stepped up his level of play. once the league has started, he's a good one that will be fun to watch. >> we can't wait to see him in action. we'll be back with the starting lineups and the tip-off. the number one team in the back 10, the cal bears taking on number two, the arizona wildcats. pac 10 hoops presented by kfc continues in just a moment. g8g88

courts. named both the midwest regional and final four all tournament teams. on december 8, 2008, the richard jefferson gymnasium was dedicated in tucson. the former wildcat donated $3.5 million toward the construction. the 20,000 square foot facility, two full courts, used for the team's practice facility and also used for volleyball. richard jefferson understands the importance of this kind of building. >> i remember practicing in the gym that was 50 years old when i was there. if you want to continue having success, especially at your alma mater, things like that really go a long way. keeping your name of things, showing new players and even old players that giving back is really the key. >> darrin: there you see the banner from 2001 when they went to the final four. you don't often see former
3:47 pm
players give that kind of significant contribution to their alma mater. >> marques: would like to see more of that, specialsly with the kind of money some of these guys are making. richard jefferson, both parents are missionaries. he exploded on the scene out of nowhere. >> darrin: very proud of what he's been able to accomplish in the nba. randle controls the ball up high. >> marques: lamont jones on top. can't lose track. >> marques: can't lose track of him. mo jones, created the space, knocked down the long three-pointer. have to stay with him. >> darrin: quick lesson for the freshman out of new york city. knocked away. a turnover. >> marques: tough to handle. the turnover at the other end.
3:48 pm
3:49 pm
off-the-dribble forays. again, using the left hand to finish inside was the only reason why he did not get that shot blocked. >> darrin: so fundamentally sound is randle. outstanding free-throw shooter, fourth in the nation at 93%. so a three-point lead for cal, just under 14 minutes left. wise with a quick step. goes to the corner, but a foul, a blocking foul against cal.
3:50 pm
g gutierrez. >> marques: he's the toughest player on this cal team, does a great job getting into position. a little slow on that play. he had a big three-pointer, took a charge against -- watching all the activity, mo mo jones gets called. >> darrin: the freshman getting some lessons. that's four turnovers. three-point lead for first place kale here at the mchale center along with march questions johnson and darrell horn ton. randle wants another three. front iron. boykin dig out the rebound. robertson strong to the hole. and he gets fouled.
3:51 pm
don't form get later today, our college hoops double-header continues. it's maryland against clemson and, of course, the nightcap, we will take you into chapel hill to see virginia against north carolina, a full day of college basketball. looking forward to seeing some of those games. getting into february, you start thinking about the brackets. >> marques: what a job done any bennett, the former coach of washington state has done down at virginia. for clemson, they have booker who is the cousin of jordan hill who played here at arizona last season, now with the new york knicks who is making a name for himself. >> darrin: very quietly cal going on a little 7-0 run as robertson knocks down the free-throws. >> marques: cal thrives off of shooting the basketball. randle got them off to a good start in that area. >> darrin: parrom inside. rebound by boykin.
3:52 pm
>> marques: too much hesitation. robertson is not a shot blocker. once you get in the paint, you've got to go up quick. >> darrin: christopher to the hole. boykin with the rebound as he cleans it up. >> marques: a fifth year senior with boykin. so far schooling the young freshman, derrick williams. >> darrin: wise couldn't finish. it goes off his hand -- no. they're going to say it went off of cal. so the wildcats will retain possession. >> marques: the one thing i like about derrick williams, high basketball iq. he'll figure things out. >> darrin: i love his patience. it's interesting. it's rare you see a freshman that has that kind of patience. >> marques: if you have the confidence in the foot work, you know you have to counter move for anything the defense did. you're not interested, not in a hurry, not panicy. >> darrin: it gets stuck in the
3:53 pm
rim. that will be cal's ball. >> marques: back in the day we called that the ultimate brick. that shot is so off and so short, so much lack of rotation, the ultimate brick shot by kyle fogg. >> darrin: that's actually a possession error situation. because cal won the opening tip, the ball will stay on this side of the floor. it also means that cal, unless we have another situation with possession, will open the second half with possession. you see solomon hill go to the bench. here is wise from three. >> marques: going to continue to go beneath the ball three and that dribble hand off by derrick williams to nic wise. nic wise can knock down that shot. got to chase him over the top off the three-point line.
3:54 pm
>> darrin: robinson answers with a three. he's coming off a game where he did not score off arizona state. >> marques: he's match-up nightmare for our fours in this league because of his ability to shoot the basketball. >> darrin: 22-15. parrom on the wing now. >> marques: arizona not doing a good job of handling the basketball. a lot of almost mistakes. >> darrin: bounce pass to parrom. he gets the reverse. the freshman out of the bronx, new york. >> marques: he brings a toughness to this team they didn't have when he was out with his injuries. he showed it against thompson, guys he didn't know the names of. good defense, right there. >> darrin: fogg in transition. back iron. christopher gets the rebound.
3:55 pm
one thing i've noticed, marques is arizona not getting a lot of second shots. >> marques: kyle doing a nice job rebounding the basketball. >> darrin: gutierrez spinning, he can't get it off the glass. wise will bring it up. quick pass to williams, picks up the foul, and now he'll go to the free-throw line to shoot two. we have got a break in the action. the senior nic wise answering for the wildcats. this three-pointer has his wildcats within five.
3:56 pm
3:57 pm
getactsu.go together, we can all fight the flu. >> darrin: welcome back, 22-17 cal with the lead. great basketball players and they let it be known by talking about it. i'm more just showing people what i can do. but if i was one of the guys that was really cocky, she'd be the first to let me know it's not the right thing to do. try to stay ground $as much as i can and appreciate the game. >> darrin: it is refreshing in this day and age when guys are
3:58 pm
pounding their chest and pointing to the name on their chest to see a humble young man like jerome randle. >> marques: his mother did a good job raising him. he has another brother jeremy that lived with him for the past couple years. they're helping each other. jeremy is in school, getting jeremy away from the mean streets of inner city chicago. so a lot of things going on in the life of jerome randle that he should be proud of. >> darrin: derrick williams at the line to shoot two free-throws. the first one goes off the back iron for the freshman out of la ma rad da, california, a 70% free-throw shooter. >> marques: upped that percentage to 81 during the pac 10 season, trying to stay in game down the stretch because of early season inability to knock down clutch free-throws. he's improved himself in that area. >> darrin: bounce pass stolen away by fogg. he tries to take it coast to coast, but loses it at the end.
3:59 pm
they're going to say it's off of fogg's thigh. >> marques: great defense to play. great transition hustle. kyle fogg thought he had a sure two points. christopher makes the play. slap it away. the ball goes off his legs. about as close a game as this could possibly xw. those kind of defensive plays make the difference. >> darrin: boykin down low. a little too strong. they're going to get horn for the reach-in. >> marques: fans want the officials to let them play. he had both hands extended in the air. he has allowed that position. >> marques: i love that, the principle of verticality. >> darrin: amoke goes to the
4:00 pm
