under. >> player's skin and into his head, which causes more distraction? do the ears or through the eyes? to find out, we deviced a diabolical experiment we call distraction. our guinea pig is brandon hughes. an elite college guard who plays for the aztecs of san diego state university. he's used to distractions. he's an impressive 80% free-throw shooter. hi, brandon. thanks for coming . >> thanks for having me. >> all we want you to do is concentrate on making free throws, you and the

every straight ho mostly empty gym with few distractions. the same for brandon in our lab and thecord is in jeopardy. brandon goes 9 for 10, above his personal average. with a baseline establisheheheh% and a pulse of 69. >> still calm and cool.

69. >> it's time to add the first variable. visual distraction. in our lab an unruly crowd isn't enough. we want to really get under brandon's skin. so we're going to pile on the visual distractions to make sure we achieve complete visual overload. it's known as sensory saturation. we fire up strobe lights, unleash the fans and, most importantly, we send in the clown. and to make sure we stretched his visual capacity to the max, we allowed everyone to break all the rules.

what is the biggest thing that was distracting you out there? >> the clowns like he was just breathing on me. slipping. >> so how did these distractions get under brandon's skin? by getting in his head. our cutting edge technology reveals how distractions invade our brains to become the "x" factor in the athletic equation. a free throw requires very little physical effort, about 4.9 neutons of energy, equivalent to raising a cold beverage up to your mouth five times. so physically not so tough. mentally a different ballgame. our eyes can handle visual

distractions by focusing intently on what we want to see. visual distractions are filtered out by prioritizing and the free frontal core tex of the brain maintains concentration. unlike our eyes, however, our ears can't focus or close. we've got no defense mechanisms against what we don't want t hear. rising distractions reger in a different part of the brain. when the pressure from these sensory overloads starts to rise, the body ts to cool things down with percent sprags, a by-product of heart rate and adrenaline. handling that adrenaline and staying focused is called composure. if he can't control himself in the battle against distractions, he doesn't have a shot. so how did he do? with flashing strobe lights, screaming fans and a hot clown in his face?

watch this ball. >> okay. >> don't blink. >> i'm not blinking. >> all right. >> i can't help it. >> it's a natural reaction. you have to overcome that. that's lesson number one. now you're going to have pitches that get away from the catcher sometime, ball's off the bat, and they're going to hit you. >> an umpire has to train himself to overcome fear and the involuntary reflex to blink knowing all too well that he's always in the line of fire. >> you can't be fearing this and anticipating that as the pitch is coming in. >> are you going to warn me? >> no, i'm not going to warn you. why should i warn you? don't blink. >> you're trying to teach me to not blink, right? >> yeah. i'm trying to teach you to eliminate the element of fear. >> that's not fair. >> the average human blink takes 300 to 400 milliseconds, well under a half second.

but for anumpire, a poorly timed blink can potentially decide a game. here's why. a 95-mile-an-hour fastball reaches the catcher's mitt in 395 milliseconds or just under 0.4 of a second. that's fa t the time it takes to blink our eyes. in an average game, the umpire sees 300 pitches, that 300 split second decision he has toooo ma without ever master the art of not blinking, here's lesson number two. know the strike zone. >> okay, now it's time for the big test. you want to be behind the catcher, all umpiring is is angle and distance. spread the feed about shoulder width apart. sit down like you're sitting in the chair. you get the proper angle, the proper distance, you should be able to see the play and call it properly. >> okay.

>> for more insight into the difficulties of the job, we equipped john's mask with a lipstick camera for an ump's eye view. >> what was it? make a call. let's go. >> what was it? depends on when you played. here is the evolution of the boundaries of the strike zone. for nearly 100 years, baseball used the same strike zone first established in 1887. a pitch that, quote, passes over home plate not lower than the batsman's knee nor higher than his shoulders. in 1969 it was redefined and reduced between the armpits and the tops of his knees. another change in 1988. lower the top of the strike zone from the armpits to the midpoint between the shoulder and the top of the uniform pants.

and most recently in 1996 the bottom boundary lowered, too, from the tops of the knees to the bottom of the knees. >> now the strike zone we're talking about is from the hollow beneath his knee over the plate, the 17-inch plate, and no higher than the midpoint between the top of his pants and the top of his shoulders which will be right about here. now the key, though, is that is when he's swinging at the pitch not when he's standing up here in the static position. >> as they're swinging. >> as he prepares to swing, that's when he takes his strike. >> okay. >> here we go. what was it? make a call. let's go. make a call. why are you looking back at the pitcher? >> where am i supposed to look? >> the ball. >> strike! >> the ball is outside. you called it too quick. you didn't track the pitch from the strike zone into the mitt. that's why you missed that pitch. they're going to be yelling at you from both sides all night long. every hitter is going to be turning on you and saying you can't give him that pitch.
