i always thought they were there. they made me feel secure. >> my mother being an educator said no matter what anybody said that we could accomplish anything we wanted to do. just keep on doing it. and we kept doing that and that's the way john kept doing his life too. >> when i was insecure and having difficulty it school, my mother always told me to speak your mind. she said speak your mind. don't be afraid to say the things that you believe. they provided me with the psychological amidst all of that which we had to deal with. we were classified as being poor. i had to go to college when you heard the cry about poverty, to realize that we were not -- i thought we were middle class. we had to move out of the project because i think my father got like a ten cent raise

or something and they had limitations. >> poppy wasn't an educated man but poppy and grand ma made sure education was prominent. >> he would say, get something your education, the white man will never be able to take it away from e. i'm in the 5th or 6th grade and i'm having trouble in school. you know. you get to a point where in your mind it was important for me to win. >> i think that he is -- if there was a problem, she would take care of it and what she did, she got a reading teacher to show that he couldn't read and that was his problem.

that was the only problem. i thought it was the right thing to be completely honest, they kept saying that he couldn't learn, he couldn't do this or do that. if you can't read, you the importance of reading. >> kind of shy at first and they said you got to play some basketball.

>> those guys hasn't made me played basketball, hadn't kicked me up and carried me from my house, they said you can go to school and get an education and use this. you ain't going to be babe ruth. you better go on and play. like el gin, he was by our house. >> over the summer of the first year he said he made it a mission to get better. i went over to play him and i'm at his playground and all of a sudden all four guys quit because he shot everything he touched. they quit. i knew why he said everything because he said he wanted to be better. the next year he was legitimate. he was a legitimate player. >> in high school, you guys had an incredible win streak. describe what that time was lake, running through the teams at that point.

>> we were just big, strong. we would shoot and we just feared nothing or no one. and we walked through people. >> what effect did segregation have on you guys as teenagers. >> wow! >> i think some good and some bad. at the time they were bad. they were good because we had a good group of people that understood the bigger picture of things, who were focused like your dad. >> determinations not segregation was the worse thing -- they made it feel it was you. when you segregated everybody they knew it was your color. >> one championship that the team we were oh, in washington d.c. was the boys club championship because the black blayers are not able to play

there. >> what effect has rossa parks had on your life. >> enormous. i would reflect on rossa parks and said i am glad that she provided an opportunity for all of us that sat down on that bus and took a stand and didn't great deal of respect for her. it goes without saying a great deal of respect for dr. king, offered his life up for what he believed in. that is very significant and it is very inspirational because you need to have a hero. you need to see an example. you need to hear people who are not afraid to take positions and say the things that they had to say. >> coming up on my life, 365 ...

with. did not accept it was the norm, particularly in the world that i traveled in but i was accepted by a lot of the members of the media. that's one of the most misleading things in the world that people say to me why are you a member of the media, you didn't get along with the media. if i wasn't a media i would be a hermit, that is why the coach was significant in my life, he wasn't telling me how to get a long with the media but to function in an industry that didn't accept me and didn't want me and didn't accept a lot of people that looked like me. >> john probably had a love-hate relationship with the media because he did things his way, he did it the way he felt was successful based on what he knew to be the markers for success and he wanted his kids to attain and recognizing the challenges associate with the adjustment of being a freshman in college. >> all reporters weren't bad or unfair to me. some of them said things that

were inaccurate about me. because i did not give them assess billity. i didn't pick them up at the airport and sit for them hours at dinner and talk to them. i didn't kiss their. [ bleep ]. that's people that i didn't like is people portraying me as something. i never spent a lot of time trying to convince anybody differently and say oh i do like you all, i don't like such you, why are you saying this about me. if you are going to formulate an opinion about me and you don't know me, then i'm not going to spend a lifetime trying to explain to you how i am. >> did you foresee you having that same success in that fi as you had in your other field? >> i had fun. we got a couple of little awards, a little first ones. i walked into the radio station

and they asked me to come on at nca time to talk about the nca and they asked me to stay. doc and i were the luckiest things that happened to me because they taught me. i didn't stop for a commercial. i just kept on talking and dock and i, you know, said to me you know, that's how we get paid. >> you asked what was going on. >> coach, what is wrong with your players, the nb aor whatever? >> the twice doing drug or i got something. >> i don't care what we could. we got to ostensibly talk about it. >> he talks about everything. one of the common misperceptions on coaches that everything is erase issue, it isn't, he gets behind issue and there is

better than listening him talk about an issue. >> you know how hard it is to coach talented people, they want to be creative and express themself and conform. i said you had to do a great job, don't tell anybody you didn't coach, you didn't have great players that's idiots that will say that. >> some say he is not a radio guy but i think he is capable of radio and i think he is unlimited. whether he choose to do that may be a different story but in terms of skill set, there is nothing he can't do. >> if you told john thompson he was taking absolutely nothing for granted. >> you guys ran through detroit. you also ran through atlanta. you have been waiting to play. is there any worry of overconfidence on your part as you move on? >> no overconfidence. we feel like this is a step to

our goal. >> what is your experience like at t and t. >> the reason i like it is because it keeps me in the flow of basketball. it keeps me around. i can sit down and talk to a michael jordan and i can sit down and talk to a magic or kobe or lebron and those guys and still have a little fellowship with them and still -- something i love to do. >> he wanted to be in the hall of fame. that is something that was

special to him.

jo you wanted to get in the hall of fame. why was that so important to you. >> it did mean something and i can't explain. you knew and i knew, i was very upset, very upset the first two times i didn't and that's counter active to what you said because i said to you all growing up that i don't want to accept the praise and then i don't have to accept the criticism. >> he definitely wanted to be in the hall of fame without a doubt. that's something -- and that's something that was special to him. and i think it's just to be recognized. as one of the special people in

this sport. >> i never will forget mike krzyzewski called me and i didn't have a great relationship with him and he almost sounded emotional. he was so upset i didn't get in the hall of fame and that meant something to me. >> i think he is brilliant first of all and he pushed the basketball ahead and the african-american athlete in basketball ahead more than anybody in the history of the college game. >> it was important for me to get this ring. i wear this ring all of the time. >> how would you like pop to be remembered? >> i haven't thought about that question. but if there is ever an understanding that it is an always was for him so much more than about what happened on the court, that it was about shaping, molding, preparing young men, the ones that he
