emotion. they want cal to knock off arizona state. time for our american airlines flashback. january 2008 here in haas pavilion. nearby heyward high school, tied them with 61 points. sun devils guard went 18 for 30 from the field including 7 of 10 from behind the arc as arizona state defeated the bears 111-108 in double overtime. one of the greatest games in pac-10 history. and cal's all-time scoring leader shawn lampley, he had 20 points in that game. he's right next to us. so much emotion at the haas pavilion today. i think arizona state has matched them in poise. >> marques: they've done a tremendous job coming out. california maybe a little too high, too intense right at the start. but once they started attacking, going to the basket, they settled down.

arizona state has more than met the challenge early on. the interesting thing about this series, steve, in the last 11 games, 9 times the road team has won this game. the last times the home team held serve and all about that, it was all about the road team. then cal goes down to tempe and wins that game back in january. so the team is not intimidated playing on the home court. >> steve: boykin and randle combined for 50 that day in tempe, including making -- what was it, 20 of 29 shots? it was amazing. >> marques: he tipped in 20 of his own. the big three would have done a nice job carrying the load offensively. i like the defensive intensity of both teams. >> steve: with the floater. off the glass. a beautiful kiss. his father is here today. derek glasser averaging 10 1/2 points per game. and he beat cal in the game-winning shot as a freshman.

but this is the type of defense mike montgomery has been trying to get them play. usually it is fueled by outside shooting. that's not been the case. they're attacking the defense inside. but locking it down on the other end. >> steve: this is a matchup op one of the best offenses against one of the best defenses. cal averages 78 points per game. that's among the best in the conference. arizona state defense only allows 58. fewest points per game since 1949. 50 by an asu team. >> marques: a lot riding the wave. >> steve: theo robertson. with a one dribble stayed. and he knocks down points 6 and 7. >> marques: he's been telling his teammates that he's a freshman on that team. has a chance to win at ucla at home. these guys need opportunities

glasser finds a wide open lockett who knocks it down. >> marques: that is a restricted area rule in effect. amoke tried to get over but he was wearing the rim as a halo to get underneath the rim in the opinion of the official. so no foul called on that play. >> steve: mike montgomery calls the time-out. i think he wants to change the defense. because the last two defensive possessions that cal has seen arizona have not been good. we've got a time on the floor.
