what anxperit i go one oenembe stit of c-10 nfer and there's the trophy that goes to the victor. the man that will hand that trophy to the winning team, commissioner larry scott. good to see. >> you nice to be with you. >> your first year, not quite a full year in the pac-10. you took over in july, went through the football season, now through the basketball season, starting to wind down. your take on what you've seen here in the first several months of your first year at pac-10? >> a lot to observe. pac-10 is a special place with excellence across so many different sports. as we mentioned, the pac-10 is winning more ncaa championships across sports than any other. that's one of the beauties of the conference. not only is it a powerhouse in football and basketball, but women's sports, olympic sports. it sets adversity and balance in the pac-10 conference. an awful lot for me to get a grip on my first year.

>> one trend we've seen in college athletics as of late, conferences, especially major conferences, are getting bigger and bigger. there's been talk potentially about expanding the pac-10. why is that a good idea, commissioner and where do you think that will be in the immediate future? >> one of the reasons that's exciting for me to be involved in college sports in the pac-10, it's a dynamic time. college sports is very robust. i think it's growing in terms of value. with the economy the way it is, the financial pressures on the schools, i think it's requiring a different way of thinking and preparing for the future. so, we are -- as we get ready to go to the media market a year from now, i feel like it's incumbent upon me as new leader in this conference to think about all things that add value and enhance and solidify the conference long into the future. so if we're going to think about he can he expanding the conference, alliances with other conference, now is my time to do it. i was brought in to look at

things from a new perspective, take a step back and present to our constituent a plan for how we'll may the pac-10 as strong as we can in the future. expansion, having a football championship has to be in the mix of things you'll think about. >> there's also been talk of expanding the ncaa tournament to 96 teams, adding 34 more teams. what's your take on that? >> well, it's a very complex -- i've been here eight months. and it's like i'm just scratching the surface of understanding the complexities of the issue. the n.i.t., where they are with the tv markets and all that right now. what i would say coming from my experience in professional tennis is i think you have to be careful before you make a decision like that about expanding a format. the ncaa basketball tournament is something highly admired, very valuable. i do have some concerns about diluting something that is so pristine and so special on the one hand. on the other hand, regular

season college basketball is in a bit of a delicate stage, too. conference championships like we have going on here right now need to be valued and preserved as well. all of which is to say i have some concerns diluting what is so great about the ncaa tournament, diluting pac-10 basketball but i don't understand what the leadership the ncaa is thinking about and the pressures they have. it's too early for me to think about definitively. >> sounds like you have a lot on your plate. good luck with those expansion ideas. the commissioner of the en we return the oute pac-10 women's turn under way at galen center also in los angeles. we heoree of semifinal action as well. big day here although staples center los angeles for the pacific life pack ten tournament. boston lager is my favorite.

speaking of stanford, the women are trying to do the same thing as well. the state farm women's pack ten tournament under way at galen center. joining me from the stanford women's toech, head coach, ten-time pack ten coach of the year. tara, welcome. >> it's great to be here. >> you got under way with a 20-point win over arizona. you've been ranked second in the country all season long. talk about your team's performance today and how well you think they're prepared to enter the ncaa tournament. >> our team is playing very well right now. jane is coming back from an ankle -- sprained ankle. mckay was the pack ten player of the year this year. these playing great. kayla peterson and great play from bolen, and so it's really exciting. you know, the pac-10 women's tournament is very competitive. >> you talked about some of your

players. i think if people have seen your team play, they realize are you have a lot of talent and versatile players. you mentioned apell, peterson. you've got some very good players on your team. >> if you want to compete at the highest level, we have a great coaching staff but the players get out there and get it done. they worked very hard. they get along very well. they're very unself sxish a fine group to coach. >> you went 18-0 in the conference in pac-10, 21-1 in the season, and the one loss to the number one team in the country, uconn. you were the only team this season to lead uconn at the half. they rallied in the second half. some of your players are anxious to get a rematch with uconn. i know from a coaching standpoint you're trying to limit that and not look too far down the road, but that could be what we see here in the final four in san antonio. >> we would love to go to the final four. we were the last team to beat uconn. they have a terrific team. just great players. i have a lot of confidence this

against stanford he has played tremendous defense. hadn't shot particularly well. did a nice job disturbing. but it's been his defense against jeremy greene. thomas, again, i expect stanford to make washington prove they can knock down the long ball consistently. look to pack it in when they play zone, play soft when they play man-to-man.

isaiah thomas will be have to be a scoring threat from long. >> holiday likely will take landry field. pondexter, a guy who can average 20 point a game and rip you for 20, 25, 30. he can go off. meantime for the stanford, they have a guy named jeremy green, great range, engineer moment randle range. >> just a sophomore. has really improved in different areas of his game. not just strictly a jump shooter like he was last season. he's doing a much better job taking the ball to the basket, like in that possession. and andrew bettis shooting off the dribble. he has improved his game. thomas has kind of picked up the gauntlet of challenge that lorenzo romar throws at him. this will be a terrific match-up between two of the pac-10's best players. >> landry fields led the conference in scoring in over 22
