side there are people who are fearful of future suffering. of this situation is intolerable. there is a younger generation, aspiring to survive on our collective stupidity. to face complex and challenging problems to be at regional peace with at long last bring some relief to this particular part of the world. under jordan's leadership it is deeply supportive of
11:31 pm
president obama's desire to establish peace in our region on the basis of two states living side by side in peace and security. and we believe this is entirely doable after all when it comes to peace nothing is impossible 1995 i was serving with the un and former yugoslavia reaching the month of july we brought all convinced there would be conflict and bloodshed in bosnia for another 10 years. the weaponry was plentiful the hatred was apparent we had a sauce and every peace agreement and simply could not see a way out had been

six months since the fighting stopped. for the killing stopped maybe the fighting continued by other means. i don't think anybody believed it was possible. so we are firmly of the belief were we to act decisively we can achieve something. and of course, it is there we're very close hopefully to seeing the beginning of the proximity and soon after we can build upon them. there is some ever that occupies the world's attention at the moment we

see jerusalem in two parts. it devotes very deep meaning as to what it does, of all people of the faith and the head to we feel we are very close to a position now where we don't halt what is happening around jerusalem particularly around the movement's working very intensely around one in particular. and were not able to see the mayor of jerusalem we will find ourselves in a situation if jerusalem was

lost on the ground or in other words, is it not possible for any future israeli government to go to war with its own people and such with the facts on the ground to negotiate a settlement beyond the possibility within the state of terminal crises and it is not a case of a problem with the palestinian people but a question in the islamic world of 1.4 billion muslims with high anxiety over this and then of course, israel is left with its non demographics with no partners to assist in creating a framework for peace because the aspirations.

[inaudible] the other thing happening in east jerusalem concerns is forawry. on the 21st of august, 1969, an australian tourist at the mosque, there were several days of intense writing and the mosque was burned down. i can't imagine if there is anything equivalent to that today what we would do. i don't know where we would begin. we would be so lost and we could speak for almost every government and to set their in shock and wait and see what would happen the

consequences are all the host incalculable. beyond all the kph recognition and of the threat of something like this is real because of happen before the end we must take every measure to ensure it is applied liberally to all of our actions when we consider jerusalem and its surroundings. in 1969, the year the mosque was burned down, there was a british physician that went to work in the best abraham hospital and upstate new york. he had to deal with so many patients suffering from the 1920's disease called the sleeping sickness with a

catatonic patients. and this position administering the elbow of fort perkins is patience and miraculously almost him managed to revive them and for a short period of time they engage in life in a manner that have been impossible by talking and meeting friends and discovering themselves and then as all of you know, the continued use of the added drug they went back into the catatonic state. there was a screenplay written for it then turned into a movie called awakenings.

and one cannot help but feel when you consider the developments of madrid from the regression from the late 1990's onward you cannot help but feel that unless we all resolve to solve this problem and do so quickly, that future historians will look back at this period of peace as a brief awakening, a brief moment in time that introduced itself and left as quickly as it came. and of course, the tragedy would be beyond words. for all of us because we either survive this crisis together or we won't survive if it together.
11:39 pm
we will all suffer. having said that at the beginning i have nothing to say. my goal for the middle east is never quite true. i have offer these reflections to you not an answer with the may questions that you have roach no doubt for me but in the form of reflections who like you spend a great deal of time looking at the problems of the disease looking at them with the hope and no shortage of frustration but i thank you very much to inviting me and i look forward to answering your money questions. thank you. [applause] >> they hear mr. ambassador as is the custom we have
11:40 pm
four buy six cards upon which we invite you to write to your questions and his royal highness has agreed to respond to them. we referred to this session as a cerebral massage. [laughter] and among the questions? >> maybe i should stand up. here is one. israeli politicians repeated the phrase the notion that jordan should be the palestinian state given its already palestinian population. how does jordon respond to this proposal and what to related to the question is the future of jordan's large palestinian population? >> that is nice of them to dispose of georgia and in
11:41 pm
the way they see fit. [laughter] what i think is very worrisome about the narrative largely on the israeli right is that it is built upon the notion for those that advocate peace a week with moderate too simply don't understand just on the arab side in the form of those believe resistance is the only way but fortunately eight should say history is illicit with examples that people said to their people steadfastness, the sacrifices that we must endure common the resistance that we must encourage is
11:42 pm
the only means to succeed because these leaders, many of them have drove people to destruction. the only real way to succeed is to negotiated a settlement based on some notion of justice for those who have suffered. and to fulfill the national aspirations of the people who desire them. i don't often hear about the palestinians themselves say they want to turn toward and into palestine but the palestinians like this day and we support them if they want to see the end of the occupation and such they can govern their affairs free and unfettered by a foreign interference. i think that is the position that we take. >>
11:43 pm
>> religiously justified radicalism seems to have become an accepted and often deadly, method of expressing political and economic grievances. how does jordon seek to deal with such by lands within its own borders? >> that is a question with which i think needs to be answered from different angles. i think being absolutely right when published a work on an identity and violence makes the argument that in the world today, we are all carrying multiple labels. these labels must be held in and some sort of balance. i see myself as a jordanian
11:44 pm
moslem, , husband, father, i have these political views, a cultural states, a passion for music comment i enjoy playing chess, i look at myself through these different presumes. but the extremist amongst us will attach importance two one label to the exclusion of everything else. whether you are chauvinistic nationalism or whether someone who believe so strongly to the ideology would engage everyone and everything else? of his argument is that it surely the human being of today can dispute issues and doubt everything and then through arguments and discourse can either settle those doubts or further

questions but eventually we must renounce violence. we must renounce violence. we must strive and drive to ensure that war is eventually unthinkable. we cannot continue to inflict massive suffering because we believe we are right and they are wrong. it is unacceptable. in terms of how we view extremism within our own families it is clear to get there with many of the leaders of the region the leader of saudi arabia and egypt have taken on measures it is fundamentally an issue for the muslims not really

for the west we must address it. to the various programs we have tried to ensure that many of those that preach in the mosques have been through school and they are very morale more of the tenants of islamic jurisprudence. that is not the case in 1020 or 30 years ago. a substantial proportion of those whose spoke in a mosque did not have the requisite training one would have thought was essential for them to do so. and i think we have made sure that this is now the case and also tried to embark on a series of initiatives and mentioning fact, worth i think this is an initiative that draws a great many, over 100 from the islamic world to open up a dialogue with our kristian

brethren, such that we can ensure there is harmony between christians and muslims worldwide. and it is fundamentally grounded to the intentions to allow the divinity of god and love thy neighbor. so this is common to the two religions to enable the program of international standing. there is mini a practical measure that we can take in this regard and i don't know if we should disclose what i have in mind buy we are trying to think along practical terms not just simply a case of meeting and greeting but in the case of us in a bling, an action that could be for the betterment of christians and muslims.
11:48 pm
>> i'm asking my colleague too also ask some of the questions. >> what direction is the most promising thing for george s. economic kabbalah met? agriculture is very small and as is manufacturing. much of the economy depends on services. what combinations seemed to be viable for the future what role does the aqua for play? of the above? >> yes. [laughter] what a question. >> to put the middle east into perspective often when i sit with my colleagues from the middle east and we are alone we immediately start whining about the state of our region it is commonplace. perhaps a mediterranean thing than ours.
11:49 pm
maybe it is the time and a garlic. [laughter] but we start to complain about everything prepare ourselves, our culture, why it is we are now more advanced than we should be. we turned into a comic relief while pointing out the shortcomings. and then we travel and rego to other parts of the road and notice that the problems are the same if not worse and some may be made to except the fact we are societies and transition. we are proud of that and in georgia and we need some very vibrant one barakat the icy p and two companies that have led-- made height of lions one at two under million dollars it was a very simple start rich is

like the arabic browser service. the other of which is similar to trigger is also making headlines that it can corral a huge amount of support for a particular humanitarian endeavor. this is demonstrative of the power in particular that you are able to marshal and supports of particular ideas. provided the opportunities to do so. we nevertheless fear that notwithstanding the high rate rose rates up that 8% and more every year up until last year the reduction of the fbi and global economic slowdown has affected us so our gross was reduced at
11:51 pm
2.7% we expected to climb closer up at five but notwithstanding that economic activity continues to be active. we continue to see a lot of investments into jordan and that puts us with help. >> how should the deep divide between fatah on the west bank and hamas in gaza be dealt with? how could we reasonably expect meaningful and enduring success in the process to zero her win new-line major party to the conflict is not dealt with? is one serious and one not? is one to be inclusive are exclusive in terms of dealing with all of the

party's? >> this is a question really for the ambassador he is the expert here. [laughter] but one of my reactions to this question and you hear it often in washington. it is an amazing city because there are subjects we cannot discuss but others that are so popular this is a frequent question. how can they grow if they are divided? >> are they so exceptional? the middle east is desperately divided and even europe was. with some and a crucial issues and the united states are devolved on the crucial issues. i think we have to be careful not to take a patronizing tone with them. they are a people who have a constellation of different
11:53 pm
views. the egyptian government must we praised for sparing no effort to try to bring fed two sides together. we hope they succeed the polis demands and outsourcing differences footed is so exceptional to have a higher that i think we as a people, when you look at the planet, one can remark that if you took a treaty negotiated, internationally negotiated in the immediate aftermath of the second world war and tried to negotiate exactly the same terms today, you could not do it. you could not take it and
11:54 pm
negotiate the terms to day? you could not take the torture or refugee convention? what does that tell you? that we are simply unavailable to work together in the way that we once used to work together and green need to find the formula to make it work again. so within societies and between societies there is much work that needs to be done. >> water is a crucial component of the future development but supplies continue to? what about the vitality of water and can you have four to sharing arrangements? is said dead sea or red sea canal paid possibility or can be salinization? what is going on with that? >> this is a problem that is
11:55 pm
severe in our region. it was once considered the average per capita usage by an american per year is 9,000 cubic meters. the poverty standard is 1,000 cubic meters per year and in jordan our usage is 150 cubic meters per year. we are very vulnerable were water is concerned and working on 97 nation on a major re to meet the demands of our population but we need to redouble our efforts in this area it is a major concern to us.
11:56 pm
>> where it is jordan's seek himself doing this with the securities scenarios now and in the next two or five years inclusive of the relationship of the united states and the relationship to the issue regarding iran's nuclear development? >> >> it is very clear in my mind that we can anticipate a broad trajectory with the early thirties you could sense europe was in very big trouble. and likewise we believe the of less arrested quickly these were frozen beyond our ability to control program at the same time we have to appreciate how difficult it is for us to read the script
11:57 pm
of unfolding events. we simply are unable to do this for the level of accuracy that inspires confidence and if we cannot understand the present because you cannot marshal all of the variables and do not know which very well is the key at any moment in time but unanticipated we find it difficult to know the present to use a by extrapolation it is almost impossible for us to understand where we can be or where we will be in fiber 10 years. we have to invest very much toward pointing to the future realizing that many other developing countries that affect a developing

country with tribal societies over 80 years largely successful but sometimes we face problems that are connected to them. we want to preserve our tribal traditions now we have to be very careful i would like to think we have a vision we are extremely fortunate in having this extraordinary leadership following from -- and so we based our trust on their aspirations and a aspirations of the jordanian people. >> what role is stored in taking to help the palestinians establish a fully functioning palestinian state? >> the most apparent with

the police and security forces and i think it has been a successful exercise and we're working very closely with president abbas on that score and supportive of the difference of prime minister and i think we're joined now by the international community for the statement issued recently that the program is elevated to where the international community fully supports the passion and attempt of the palestinian authorities to raise the standard and ever structure but in a
