approach. steven brooks the junior out of wycoff new jersey comes in hitting .327. he is a speed ter. one of those multitolled players for wake forest. could be higher inle lineup with that speed. as mentioned brings the average and the power as well for head coach tom walter. brooks was 17th steels in base. one of those leaders in the acc. a guy who kind of does it call for the demon deacons ball club. eriksson wears the number 17. a 1-1 pitch. hit. left center field. this will carry. that one is gone. it is a solo home run for steven brooks in wake forest on the board early with a power shot off of eriksson.
7:10 pm
and for brooks that's his fourth home run of the season. we talked about his speed. one of the league leaders in the league with stolen bases. you see eriksson coming in with a fastball and it's a pitch that got too much of the plate. i'm sure eriksson was trying to hit that inside corner. good compact swing. you see the pitch gets too much of the plate. brooks turns on it and hits it out of the ballpark for the first run of the demon deacons. >> jason: wake forest didn't score last night innocent the 4th inning. now, with the early advantage, which should help, their starting pitcher, a freshman, tim cooney, waits watching from the dugout. it's mike murray left-handed designated hilter at the plate. and the count is 1-1. top

freshman into the program. little by little they will get it turned around. you and i both learned today about lake forest, they don't accept junior college transfers. that limits what you can do as a coach and what you can bring into the program. >> jason: it's so tough in the aca. any time there is a coaching transition, as there was in winston-salem prior to this year, you have to put a blueprint together. it doesn't happen over night. it comes through recruiting. it comes throughputting your stamp. what your style is. it will take some time. you see that conversation between wake forest and tom walters. greg street down the first line. umpire frank sylvester at third. the hurricanes are set offensive. >> you talk about blueprints
7:17 pm
for wake forest, you don't have to look very far to find those. you have miami, florida state in the aca. and coaches that have been can pick up the phone. you have a couple coaches right there who can help you out. >> jason: devoss shows bunt. there it came at the knees. the count is 2-1. lots a speed at the top of had hurricane lineup with devoss and perez. both of them with nine stolen bases. there is a strike. we show this not a um offense that will over we will am you with power. certainly they do have power sources with grand dal, martinez. there is a beauty to get it

7:21 pm
just low, a little bit outside, and now seven straight balls thrown by the freshman cooney. you wonder really the biggest stage he has been on in his young baseball career playing here in front of this large crowd in coral gables against the perennial power at the university of miami and a chance for the wake forest coaches to see more of the medal of coone. there is a strike as he tries to fight his way back in the count. >> big crowd here at alex rodriguez park. you ber believe he knows he is on tv. the on-deck hitter waiting to bat. yasmani gran dal, you don't want to get him up there with two guys on and one guy out. >> jason: that's why it's so important for guys like lawson at the plate and perez who drew the walk to add that discipline, try to get on base through whatever means possible, especially with the
7:22 pm
type of tear granddaughter has been on lately. gran dal has been on lately. the walk is send straight. that is not good for wake forest with the yasmani grand all companying up to the plate. a tough situation. you got the runner perez at first, as you mentioned. and we got a pretty good read on it. you got to imagine that affecting the control of tim cooney, a guy we talked at the beginning of the game, just seven base-on-balls in his first 39 innings of work in this first season here. he got two back-to-back walks in the 1st inning.
7:23 pm
by far the best hurricane hitter. let's get a little more information on this starting pitcher. freshman cooney from his head coach tomorrow the walter. >> tim pecuniary from pennsylvania is a true freshman. he has been one of our two best guys and probably our most consistent guy all year. he throws three pitches for strikes. doesn't throw with a great deal of velocity, but a great deal of confidence. he pitches deception and he can throw any pitch at any time to left-handed and right- handed hitters. >> jason: both runners going. throw down to third is late go. there is jason morris getting aggressive with the freshman pitcher tim cooney. you had the freshman stephen perez with the green light at 2nd base. the base runners are taught if you get a jump and you go to
7:24 pm
the bag, you go to the bag. but now 1st base is open. you see the jump there from the home plate camera. good job at 1st base by scott lawson. now expect cooney to pitch around grandal. >> jason: he will score on the underout by yasmani grandal. you're right, there was a lot going on in that situation. the baserunner is moving on. the count 2-0. obviously with that pitch pitcher cooney not afraid to challenge that who went in at bat. >> that was actually a pretty good pitch to hit there. 2-0, it shows you some of the confidence that he pitches with. the other part is you have harold martinez wait on deck. if you load the bases pore
