3rd baseline. zeke devoss 0-22. struck out reached on an error. stole a base in the 3rd. hurricanes try to take care of business tonight. and connection the series against wake forest, winning yesterday's 7-4. miami would make it 4-4 in acc series this year. count run is bull on devoss. >> good at bat by devoss so far. the on deck hitter stephen perez looking for an opportunity here in the bottom half of the 4th. >> jason: curve ball well hit, left center field. semeniuk heading toward the track. over his head and off the wall. it will be an rbi double for

zeke devoss as frankie ratcliff scores with miami's 5th run of the ballgame. >> good at at for that young freshman. he battled and battled to hit a couple balls there. got a good hit on a full count. cooney just gave in, just gave him a good pitch to hit. good job turning on that pitch and two on base hits. up by the letters, he does have nice job driving that ball out to left center field. >> jason: stephen perez at the plate for miami. 0-1. he walked and scored in the 3rd. miami leading here ot home 5-2 over wake forest -- at home 5-2
8:32 pm
wake forest. battle of freshmen right here with cooney and perez on the outside corner. perez does not like that call from the home plate umpire junior creep. >> the zone got extended a little bit there. a good job of framing for the umpire. >> jason: this sa wake forest pitch staff that entered the weekend with an overall earned run average in the acc. man on the mound right now tim cooney with his e.r.a. heading in .293 and a 3-1 record in six starts. >> the way this game is shaping out, it's going to go down. he has given up i don't know any of them being earned runs. maybe the first one, the 1st inning being under run. i think the rest of them have been unearned runs. >> jason: runner is going.
8:33 pm
0-2 pitch. no throws. zeke devoss has his second stolen base tonight. he now leads the hurricanes with 11 on the season. >> take a look once again. a great jump. speed does so many things in a baseball field. the hurricane run, they're all over the catcher in this ballgame. the pitcher is really just losing his focus as far as his pitches and worrying so much about the runners, he's not hitting his spots behind the plate. >> jason: perez fouls that off. back to the wake forest pitching staff as a team, we mentioned the exploits of tonight's starter cooney as coach walter looks on. tomorrow's startinger throwing again despite the dislocated non-pitching shoulder austin stadler with his e.r.a.
8:34 pm
of .202. so as tom walter mentioned, really the foundation of the wake forest pitching staff, cooney and stadler haven't got a whole lot of help in the bullpen. as we say that, we see the first reliever emerge. the leading e.r.a. out of wake forest bullpen is meek co suppose all. and -- to count up 2-2. >> you can only mag init doesn't affect your e.r.a. it affects you as a pitcher because you pitch a lot more pitcher. if their team would have played better defense behind them. tonight we have five errors on the board. sooner or later to takes its toll on the pitcher. >> jason: mac williamson can reign this one? , and he does so. frankky ratcliff scores for the hurricanes on the rbi double by

zeke devoss.

>> jason: miami's lead is 5-2 over wake forest. wake forest coming up to bat here in the 5th inning. it's already football season on css. that's right. more spring games over the next few weeks. clemson, george george, all this and more.

log on to cssslash sports.com for a complete lineup of games. able to see the university of miami in action on the gridiron last weekend. they put on quite a show. we had it for you here on css. line drive heading towards the gap in right center ranging over for miami and able to make the catch is the speedy nathan melendres. >> that's one thing for sure between these two outfielders, three outfielders. good speed out there for the hurricanes. you will see a lot of balls being flagged down by those guys out there. >> jason: and well hit by mark rhine. nothing to show for it. he is 0-2. we go back to the of the wake forest lineup. eric erickson giving up two runs on four hits so far this

evening. five strikeouts and no walks as has been his mo throughout his um career. lawson gives chase. he is going to run out of room, it appears. lunches just a few feet in front of his glove. hurricanes have dominated this all-time series against the demon deacons. 20 wins in 25 match-ups. miami has won 6 straight, including last night's ballgame, 7-4. and last year a sweep in winston-salem to cap off the regular season. 1-1 curve ball, misses outside. this is a wake forest program with a lot of history. in fact, 65 years of varsity baseball, back to 1940 for the

demon deacons. the been to the college world series quite a few -- excuse me, a couple times. 1949 and 1955. swung on and fouled off. wake forest most recent lay-in the ncaa tournament back in 2007. they had a nice string from 1998 through 2002. they made it in '98, '99, 2001, 2002. that one hit very deep. but foul over the fence near the right field corner. and the demon deacons making the transition to new head coach tom walter. he comes to winston-salem after spending the ve seasons at new orleans.

lights off -- wake forest trailing by 3 runs. ryan simmons watching that one. semeniuk is 0-2. popped out to the 1st baseman lawson in the 1st and lined out to center field man devoss in the 3rd. >> i want to correct the history. >> jason: i actually mention the the history of university of miami going back to 1940. i knew it didn't make sense. it dates back too the 19th century. a bit of a difference. 1891 for wake forest with the two all-time college world series appearances. that one is lined to left field and a base hit for ryan semeniuk. so here in the 5th inning the demon deacons, this is a big -- they have their two base runners consecutively on.
8:42 pm
this time with one out. and back to that dangerous part of the lineup with steven brooks. >> that part of the lineup where it happened for the demon deacons. steven brooks in the 1st inning take that fastball over the fence. and on deck mike murray with two place. eric erickson has to be careful here. it's just a three run ballgame. one swing of the bat and this could be a different ballgame all over again. see the demon deacons doing their best to pressure the hurricane base runners at 2nd base. this is a team that likes to run the bases as well. >> jason: take a look at what steven brooks was able to accomplish in the 1st inning against erickson. >> you see that fable as we mentioned earlier, jason. that ball got too much of the
8:43 pm
plate. steven brooks, which is a guy that does everything well at the plate. a good gap hitter. so he is displaying his power in that 1st inning at bat. >> jason: runner is going. erickson has him got but the throw gets away from martinez. and at 3rd is pat blair. that would have been quite a bind for the base runners. it would have been if blair caught up if that throw was accurate. it looks like he easily would have been nailed. >> you had both runners going on the hit. they have runners at 1st and 2nd, best hitter possibly at the plate. you have them running. for the hurricanes you have an opportunity to get by. good throw there to 3rd base. harold martinez. you are looking at two outs. depending how they worked it out, they could have got a
8:44 pm
double play there. >> jason: there is a slow tapper, bare handed by martinez. long throw is late. it will go down as an rbi single for steven brooks who continues to hurt miami as pat blair able to score from 3rd to the error by erickson, costing him a run. >> we talked about his speed. a guy who showed his power you see the speed there by brooks, one of the league leaders in the acc, and he easily beats that out. i think harold martinez would have been better off not even throwing that ball to 1st base. now you are looking at a two- run ballgame. a dangerous hitter, mike murray at the plate. the pitch count is still in the 60s. so it's not a pitch count issue. it's a matter of demon deacons sticking around in this ballgame. >> jason: and to hear the latest hurricane news with head coach jason morris, it's fridays 5:30 eastern time.
8:45 pm
and a look back at the previous games. here coach morris' thoughts on what is can coming up on the schedule as well only on css. eric erickson from the end of the 1st inning to the end of the third retired straight and was able to really keep the pitch count low during that stretch. but these last two innings it's starting to increase, and the dangerous mike murray 2-2, a double and a single, is up at the plate with runners at the corners. wake forest trailing 5-3 but continuing to threaten miami here in the top of the 5th inning. curve ball slapped to the 1st baseman. a chance for two. loss in the second for one. back on the bag in time. a finally tuned play by scott lawson.

3 to 6 to 3 quickly ended wake forest here in the 5th. eíeíeíeí
8:47 pm
>> jason: wake forest trying to chip away. now trailing miami 5-3 through four and a half innings in coral gables.
8:48 pm
quickly eric erickson end the wake forest threat thanks to scott lawson. >> you see there a quick release to 1st base. get back on the bag for the easy -- the 3-6-3 double play. as we talked about, blaine different position for him this year. not your typical target at 1st base. >> jason: well, the hurricanes had different options last year, jason haggerty, with lawson defensively at 2nd. as scott grabs the bat here to get started for the canes offense. there are certain advantages. only 5'10" to him defensively in the position. cooney gets over to field the bag. but just as you give certain things up like a few inches and
8:49 pm
somebody to stretch that's 6'3". >> you would expect with a guy like lawson, much more range than your typical 1st baseman as far as fielding groundballs, maybe ranging a little further to the right. but it's tough for the rest of the defensive players out there when they are throwing. the target is not as big as you are used to seeing. credit to lawson that he is able to fill in and play a position that is not his natural po position and do it well that double play in the top half of the 5th. >> jason: yasmani grandal has two batted in both courtesy of groundouts tonight. first time we see action in the hurricanes' bullpen. this guy has been a stall wart for the canes this year.
8:50 pm
pitch, grandal, he is out in front, behind of the count 1-2. grandal was 2 for 5 with a double and rbi last night, five games with multiple hits. and he is now 14 for his last 25 at the plate. shows a good eye on that pitch and grandal now has 25 runs batted in in 26 games played. >> grandal, one of the participants of the hurricane offense has had a home run derby here at alex rodriguez park. you would think that coming out of there you would expect ryan braun to win that. and grandal is actually the one that came out victorius that evening alaska exrodriguez park with the home run derby title. >> jason: he wasn't happy with
8:51 pm
the strike call by junior cr eech. cooney, you see grandal. cooney able to get the call into the outside corner. so harold martinez grabs a bat, takes a curve ball in the outside corner for strike one. >> the other half of that story, jason, just for full disclosure, is the wind was blowing in like crazy from left field. ryan braun, which probably wasn't in shape yet, was hitting with a wood bat. and gran dal was hitting a aluminum. so he had a little advantage over brian braun. >> jason: always a little after disclaimer at the end of the story, as if ryan braun needs help from us in the booth. a former hurricane slugger. current milwaukee brewer. has had anout standing major
8:52 pm
league career. who knows what is in store this this guy. harold martinez came as a surprise recruit where he played. manny fernandez was a first all county senior. and last year as a freshman led rbis with 42nd starting all 60 games and nine homeruns. martinez building on that foundation as a sophomore leading the hurricanes 26 -- 6 homeruns and 26 runs batted in. miami leading 5-3 over wake forest. we are in the bottom half of inning number 5. >> you see cooney trying to work the inside part of the plate. i am not sure if they think
8:53 pm
harold martinez has a long swing or not. pretty quick bat at the plate. harold which does a good job of keeping his hands inside on the swing. >> jason: martinez 1 for 26789 lined out to the shortstop in the first. single to left in the 3rd. 6 for 19 in his career against wake forest pitching. miami comes in with an acc record of eight wins and two losses and a very competitive coastal division of the acc. payoff pitch. just misses outside. not far from where cooney was able to get this strike and
8:54 pm
strikeout call on the previous grandal. and maybe a little bit of consistency in the zone. you saw cooney there frustrated with that base on ball. >> and that pitch land on the outside part. but breaking pitch missing outside. a nice at bat there by stolen base. and at this point it's a full mike lieu benski. harold martinez now three for three for the year as the hurricanes are eight for eight in stolen base attempts today. they did have one runner picked
8:55 pm
off earlier in the game. otherwise, just a great night on the bases for the hurricanes. >> jason: nice looking pitch by tim cooney, who is showing no ill effects here in the middle innings. just a freshman. he has been a workhorse, though, for wake forest in the starting rotation. he is averaging over 6 innings per ballgame. of course had the 8-inning performance last week against virginia tech. when your team makes five errors behind you, it's going to be tough to go 6 innings. he came with his innings with 85 pitches throwing already. he should be over his 100 pitch mark. >> jason: past cooney and the shortstop has trouble with it, but blair recovered and the
8:56 pm
stretch by lopez and this could be trouble for wake forest. lopez could be the third 1st baseman this week injured for the demon deacons. and it looks like his left hamstring. pretty unbelievable stuff as that's the end of things for the hurricanes on the groundout by pelaez. we will check on the healthof we come back.
