in the bull club takes one a true sign of strength when you take the ball the other way. you see that great follow through that he drives the ball out opposite field. this kid is growing up right in front of our eyes. he now has seven on the season here for the canes. really just maturing as a baseball player on both faces of the game. a kid that is going to be playing at the next level once he's done here at the university of miami. >> jason: i mean, there is no wind to speak of here. he had committed his front foot and still goes the opposite way, showing tremendous power. martinez. and you mentioned the numbers. last year nine homeruns in 233 at bats. this year 7 homeruns in 98 at-

pitcher in the ballgame for the hurricanes. he actually appeared in last night's game in the very same 8th inning as a set-up man. eric whalely, the right-hander, pitched an inning last night. gave up a hit, struck out a batter. whalely is kind of settling into that role as the set-up man of the canes out of the bullpen. this is his 13th appearance all in relief. average had .326 for numbers. the most impressive number the batting average against him, just 1.88. as you know, wicho. coach morris has relied on that one-two punch in the bullpen with so many outsiding closers.
9:41 pm
usually it is the set-up man who ultimately takes over that role. brooks in the ballgame. two for two, a solo home run in the first. reached on an error and scored in the fourth. also an rbi single in the 5th. >> wicho: the difference for coach morris in the 2010 version of the hurricanes he doesn't have a one-two punch. he possibly has a one, two, three punch with encinosaen. he did give up that solo home run. a two inning pitch. 3 strikesouts. possibly their best pitcher this year as far as the sass are concerned. he will come in in the middle range inning. wailly is the set up guy to david gutierrez, whose numbers are not where you want him as a

closer. >> jason: what can you say about steven brooks? again on base for the fourth time tonight. and a threat to run, as we mentioned. nice sized lead at first. not going with a curve ball below the knees taken by the dh mike murray. murray is 2-3. a big opportunity. his last at-bat in the 5th. came up with one out, runners at 1st and 3rd. into a 3-6-3 engineered by the 1st baseman scott lawson. >> wicho: we saw them down earlier down two runs. no one out here, you have one of your better hitters at the plate. you don't want to take the bat out of his hand, at the same time you have one of the top base steelers at 1st base. >> jason: murray takes a big cut. nothing to show for it.
9:43 pm
the count 2-1 on the senior out of west field, new jersey. team leader in batting average in rbis. a long look in. wailly at the belt. the right-hander comes home. swung on and fouled off to the left side. eric whaley here in the 8th inning facing left-handed hitting mike murray. steven brooks leads off at 1st . miami got pa big insurance run by harold martinez in the last half inning. count run is full on murray.
9:44 pm
murray 6-foot foot, 232- pounder. mac williamson waiting on deck. >> wicho: a good count here, jason. 3-2. you expect a hitter like murray to put the ball in play here. you might get the runners going here or the runner going here to stay out of a double play. >> jason: murray is 4-7 in the series against hurricane pitching last year, he hit .364 in the series against the canes. brooks is diving back in time. >> wicho: brooks leaning a little bit there. looked like his first move was to 2nd base. there is a baserunner here. you almost treat to like a hit- and-run. what you are doing is you just -- you know the hitter is there -- you are expecting the hitter to put the ball in play.
9:45 pm
either way, you should be safe. >> jason: there goes brooks. a hit-and-run. beautifully executed. brooks around second and third. the throw comes in plate. again a lethal combination. the one-two punch to captains brooks and murray get the job done against the canes. >> wicho: nice piece of hitting there. if the runner brooks would have not been running on that play. you see the shortstop vacate as he goes to cover the bag. and coach being aggressive once again here as you see he

fortunately, melon dez it gets away. the runner did not recognize that going over the shortstop's head and restreeting to 1st base. it seems from the 3rd or 4th inning the canes went back into cruise control outside of the run by martinez. they got four base hits in the ballgame. even though the demon deacons have given up five errors and given up eight stolen bases. they are the team that looks like they want to more. they have continued battling. they have ten base hits now. they continue to have good at- bats at the plate. the hurricanes are waiting for things to happen. nonetheless, not making anythingp happen. >> jason: at least seven left on base by the canes could be eight. i'll check the numbers again. regardless, missed opportunities offensively. and here they are engaged in a one run ballgame. wake forest showing no sign of letting up. decision time could be ensuing for the coaches with whalely struggling, giving up three

consecutive singles. that one roped down the left field line. it's a fair ball all the way in the corner. one run scores and around 3rd base bag is a baserunner. it's going to be a play at the plate and in time. as matt williamson is gunned out at the plate. wake forest unable to take the lead in somewhat embarrassing fashion. unfortunate. they tried on several occasion to regain his balance and credit miami cutting off the man and at the plate they nail williamson. >> wicho: it's amazing to see a game that they keep on crawling back, crawling back, crawling back. ur about to take the lead after giving up five errors in the ballgame, giving up so many stolen bases and your baserunner just falls and then tries to get up and falls again. i mean, this is amazing.
9:50 pm
iial this. it's absolutely incredible to see what has happened here. and that the hurricanes are still in this game. it's amazing, jason. i've never seen this before. >> jason: a situation where you have to feel for mac williamson, the baserunner, and you just know that is going to appear on quite a few of those old time bloop aerials. if you could have seen the reaction from the dugout. the fact that they have been their own worst enemy tonight. it's been no shortage of hustle and effort. when they saw the opportunity to take the lead back, and then it slips away, obviously they recoiled in that 3rd base dugout. meanwhile, eric whalely can't figure out how to get his way out of the 8th inning with four straight hits against him. here comes the head coach, jason morris.
9:51 pm
likely to relieve him of his duties. >> wicho: this could be one of those games for the coach to try to get his young team over the hump. a marquis victory. they just cant seem to grab it. >> jason: hurricanes appear to be set up in the bullpen. we'll see what coach morris decides to do. there is actually a couple of left-handers warming up down there. and morris looks towards that bullpen, trying to buy some time. we'll see how much longer the umpire allows. mentioned some of the national polls. here is espn usa today based on this past week. the coaches' poll has miami at 16. otherwise ranked as high as 15. you see the acc represented with georgia tech second. florida state sixth. clemsen sixth in this poll. >> wicho: and you mentioned the acc team is very well represent

>> jason: credit wake forest for having at the very least a lot of persistence in this ballgame. it hasn't been sharply played really on either side. but here we are in a 6-6 ballgame. and miami will go with its fourth different pitcher tonight. left-hander number 13 sam robinson. you see his number this season. the hurricanes preserving their closer to this point. david gutierrez. and meanwhile, we'll see what
9:54 pm
coach walter and wake forest come up with. it appears mike lubanski, who is due to hit here, will be replaced with a pinch hitter. and it will be obeydy coming to bat for the demon deacons to face the lefty robinson. and the newcomer in the lineup for the demon deacons is bentley high man, 5'11" sophomore out of atlanta, georgia. and with the tied score of course eric erickson will have no decision, even though he got a solid inning just those five innings. one earned run. five strike outs, one walk. unfortunate for him he is not going to factor in this ballgame. >> jason: in his first appearance to replace the catcher lubanski. i amen hitting .242 on the
9:55 pm
season. and robinson chases the runner carlos lopez back to the bag. if you are just joining us, miami led this one 5-2 after four innings. wake forest with two runs here in the top of the 8th. courtesy of four straight hits off of eric whaley. now sam an inson facing bentley high man. wake forest for all intents and purposes should have had the lead if not for loss of ball mac williamson who stumbles across the 3rd base bag and was nailed at the plate. lined off the screen. the count 0-2. bentley heyman last year hit .232 with the demon deacons. he averages here .242.
9:56 pm
this is hisp 17th appears. he has started 12 games. just eight hits in 33 at-bats. the curve ball is in the dirt. sam robinson comes up short. robinson's tenth appearance of the year. all out of the bullpen. just 5 space 2/3 innings pitched. three strikeouts and walks for him. >> wicho: here they bring him in. of course, they pinch hit. they had that lefty-righty match up. i wouldn't be surprised to see him retire this one hitter and then coach morris come back out and bring gutierrez back out.
9:57 pm
gutierrez has been warming up for some time in the bullpen i. >> jason: on the inside quarter. called. strike three. and heyman can't believe it. >> wicho: heyman trying to protect the outside part of the plate. good action on that fastball by robinson. he gets the lit hitter looking. there is coach morrison coming out, jason. he is not going to take any chances. he is going to bring out his closer and let the game lay out in his hand. >> jason: so just one batter faced. and a good job. robinson does it. a left-hander. and miami handed off to its closer. and he comes into the ballgame with a tied score. 6-6. a runner at 2nd base. now two out. shane kroker will be the first batter faced by david gutierrez, number 47.
9:58 pm
the right-handed closer for the game. a guy with a lot of experience but has struggled this season to the e.r.a. at 6.57. five saves. the only hurricane approximate pitcher with saves who was named this year with the walk number a little high. eleven strike outs. hitting .280 against gutierrez. >> wicho: definitely not the numbers you want from your closer. gutierrez a guy who has been around. younger brother of karl gout res which was an all-american closer at the university of miami. he has great stuff. i have always said as a closer it's a little difficult if you have one or two bat outings as a closer your numbers get hammered. i think that's the case with david gutierrez. he had a couple unfortunate

outings. but the guy that does have those five saves to lead the team. the only guy with saves. and he is the guy they count on to close games out. that's why he is in the game right now. >> jason: come up for the hurricanes again tomorrow's series closes against wake forest to 1:00 p.m. first pitch with jason santana for miami and austin stand letter, the left-hand ebb for wake forest. and then those two games at fau. tuesday back here at home wednesday night. the canes defeat the the owls last wednesday 2-5. then miami on the road against the virginia tech hokeys. and virginia tech a win in talahassee last night. last check had a one run lead over the florida state seminoles this evening as well. once again a change in the lineup for wake forest. shane kroker is substituted for
