we will have you covered and i know what you are thinking. what happened in round three? that's straight ahead. on espnews. kevin millwood on the mound looking for his first win as an oriole. welcome in, everybody.
1:01 pm
rick dempbcy here. if you look at the way this season has started, rick, a tough start, no doubt about it. 1-4, however, if this was, say, middle of may, it would be a five-game stretch. but i think everybody is a little concerned because this is how the season began. and how do you rectify that? you go out and you get a win. >> you really do. i wouldn't call it devastating a start like this, but i do call it disappointing. no doubt about that. the orioles at this point in the season could easily be 3-2. they've got better components than they've had in a long, long time here. andy macphail talked about how much more has come up to the big league this year than at any time he has seen. yes, we have better pitching, yes, we have better hitting, yes, we have better defense. no doubt about that. but all three of those components have to come together at one time. they consistently have to be there night after night in order for them to win in this division. they can't give games away. we'd all love to see them turn it around and everything, but like i say, we've got to get that timely hitting when there's men out there in scoring position. that's probably been the
1:02 pm
biggest thing that's showed up on the scorecard so far. we've gotten pretty good pitching out of our starting staff. last year it wasn't there. this staff has a good chance, the defense has been solid. >> well, and speaking of the roster upgrade, just before the season began, the orioles went out and acquired hugo lugo to be the utility infielder. so far that's paying dividends. let's head across to the masn booth and amber. >> reporter: julio gets his second start of the season here at second base. he's filling in for brian roberts for the second night of the row. roberts still suffering from that straineddable muscle. now, julio -- abdominal muscle. julio had two hits. trembley says he loves the energy the veteran brings to the lineup. also lugo knows how to win. he was part of that boston red sox team in 2007 that won the world series. and so i asked lugo what he thought this young team needs to do to start winning some of those close ball games. he told me simply they need to turn it on. >> right now we just are laying
1:03 pm
back too much. you know, we should be 3-1, 4-1 right now. we just need to turn it on a little. we are keeping them there and keep pushing. >> reporter: this is the first day you're giving back-to-back starts and back-to-back at- bats. how hard is it to be in the lineup when you've been there the day before and get in that groove, you also had those two hits yesterday. >> you start getting better swings, your mentality and your timing is coming back. it's not easy coming from the bench. just for me, think how i can get adjusted to playing everyday. for me to do good, i need to play. i don't want to play because somebody's hurt, i want to play because i'm who i am and what kind of player i am. >> reporter: so julio lugo's 11th season in the big leagues, a .271 career hitter, 193 career steals.
1:04 pm
he'll add some speed to the bottom of the lineup today for the orioles. last night 2-3 with a walk. now, the question going forward will be who will fill in for brian roberts if he does go on the disabled list? david trembley said today they will make that decision. brian has met with doctors again today. it is believed, it is speculated that the club is leaning towards that option at this point right now. stay tuned for "o's extra" later on in the show. my friend from masnsports.com has some more of who could be headed to baltimore if brian roberts goes on the disabled list. jim. >> alber, thank you very much. -- amber, thank you very much. time now for the "keep your edge" spotlight brought to you for just for men mustache and beard. nick markakis is 19-18 with five home runs against the blue jays starter shaun marcum. just as markakis gives the orioles the edge, you can give
1:05 pm
your edge with just for men mustache and beard. beautiful day for baseball here. lineups for today's game, the finale of three against the jays.
1:06 pm
1:07 pm
if you were thinking about coming down to the ballpark, i encourage you to do so. look at these weather conditions, bright blue skies, lots of sunshine. 75 degrees. no humidity whatsoever and very slight breezes at just five miles an hour. it is a perfect sunday afternoon for baseball here at camden yards. blue jays are going for a three-game sweep. here's the starting lineup for toronto. batista, alex gonzalez and adam lind with wells in the cleanup spot. overbay, buck will catch. pretty good numbers against the orioles starter today, millwood. when you look at the dangerous hitters in this lineup, no one has caused more harm to the orioles in the series than alex gonzalez, the short stop. >> he's not a little guy of what you'd call your classic number
1:08 pm
two hitter, a guy you expect to bunt guys over, get them into scoring position, hit behind the runners because this little guy has some pop in his bat. three times since 2003 he's had double figures in home runs. he had 23 in 2004, 18 at one other time, 16 in 2007, already he's off to a great start hitting .318. he leads the club in home runs with two so far, with three doubles to add to that. you cannot just lay the ball in, middle in and expect he's going to make an out. >> what the orioles are looking to do, of course, is get some timely hitting coming along and grouping those hits. so far this offense is off to a very slow start. and last night it was a season low. if you look at the numbers early on, they are not what you would expect from this team or at least what was expected coming into this season. 10th in batting average in the american league, averaging 3.4 runs per game, five home runs fifth, five stolen bases. they did get caught stealing last night for the first time and the average of runners in
1:09 pm
scoring position, there you see it. last night a season low six base hits. kwet is where does it -- the question is where does it come from, a breakout inning or slowly but surely trying to build it. >> there's no doubt in my mind that this ball club will be one of the best in the american league with runners hitting and scoring. last year they finished second in the american league with a .285 batting average. i expect that to be better by the end of this season. they may end of leading this league in hitting position. off to a slow start, yes. they've had a lot of opportunities. but the guy who has had the most opportunities is roberts, a guy who only got 18 at-bats the whole spring. it's the luck of the league to catch the orioles at the right time rather than the orioles not really being that good. >> the hitters are beginning to get frustrated. following the game last night, adam jones told amber that was one that simply got away. >> hernandez went out there and threw a good game. we put a doughnut for him. we really didn't go out there and swing the bats the way we
1:10 pm
normally do. that's baseball. you got 162 games. you gotta come out tomorrow and swing the bats, swing them early and swing them often. >> in this league, some people may point out the middle of the lineup doesn't have the power, but has the potential for power. overall, if you look one through nine, there should be enough guys there that can spread out some hits to get those runs. would you agree? >> i agree with you completely. we don't really have the big bopper, but we got a lot of guys who can drive the ball and lower rbi guys, and we need to work as a collective group, get on base and do all the small things and get those big hits. >> adam jones after a big game in the season opener last tuesday, he is 0 for his last 16. and if you talk about -- let's take one game at a time, adam jones, let's take one at bat at time. get a base hit to bust the o-fer. >> they need confidence inside the lineup, inside the clubhouse so they come out here every single day with that nice loosey goosy atmosphere where they won't be worried about what is
1:11 pm
happening. they are thinking a little bit too hard, a little bit too much about doing the job immediately, hitting the home run, hitting the double, and everybody is kind of stiff at this point. a couple of good innings like jim said, crooked numbers, three, four runs like that, this ball club will loosen up and they'll be a terror. >> i'm a big fan of those crooked numbers. how about this? here's the orioles lineup. a little bit of a different look at felix is back in the lineup. he will lead off. one of the key matchups in this game we'll be watching, tejada against marcum. >> miguel has had good numbers. he's had great numbers against a lot of pitchers. in particular, he is 6-13 off of shaun marcum, you can see with three lifetime home runs. markakis is even stronger than that. but miguel is the guy you want up there with the game on the line because he can take any pitcher, any pitch, anyplace
1:12 pm
you want and win a ball game for the orioles. >> and with felix back in the lineup, he did start on opening night in tampa and hasn't started since. he hasn't had an at bat, he's pinch hit a couple of times. as you mentioned, brian roberts out again, possibly headed to the disabled list. the speed of felix can be an asset if he can get on base. >> this is an opportunity for pa to do something in the top part of that lineup. i'll say it again like i did on opening day, i think this guy is going to be the biggest surprise in baseball this year. he's certainly capable. nobody knows he has tremendous power. he can hit over 20 home runs, he can hit over .300. he can steal bases, there's a lot of things he can do. the only thing that's really lacking is arm strength, but the rest of it, there's a very high ceiling with this young guy. he could get an opportunity now to really take over in that spot. >> it's sunday afternoon, the minor league seasons are completing their first weekend of play. let's get a look at some of the news and notes of the minor leagues last night. josh bell and brandon snider
1:13 pm
had big games for the aaa tides. brandon sni dp dler three rbis for norfolk. corey spoon coming back from the shoulder, two earned runs, six hits and a couple of ks. matt hopgood is in the rotation. matt hopgood a very, very young pitcher in the south atlantic lead making his season debut. it's the orioles and the blue jays. when we come back, rock joins us. stay with us on masn. - great claims service and a 97% customer satisfaction rate. show people really trust us. gecko: yeah right, that makes sense. boss: trust is key when talking about geico. you gotta feel it. why don't you and i practice that with a little exercise where i fall backwards and you catch me. gecko: uh no sir, honestly... uh...i don't think...uh... boss: no, no. we can do this.
1:14 pm
gecko: oh dear. vo: geico. fifteen minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance.
1:15 pm
oriole park at camden yards sunday afternoon, let's play some baseball. the oriole birds playing baseball. he has a no-hitter going in the sunth inning. where's the hitter? where's the hitter. there's a base hit. he broke up the no-hitter. welcome back, everybody, it's
1:16 pm
"o's extra" brought to you by ford. you got the memo, you wear a tie. rick and i will contribute next week. >> get a clip-on, it'll be fine. >> there's a lot of news and speculation going on around here. brian roberts, again, not in the starting lineup. he's still active on the roster, but we're starting to get to the point now where a decision has to be made. will he go on the disabled list to try to get this thing to heal or is it one of those things maybe he's available in a couple of days? and if he's going on the d.l., that means somebody has to come take his place because right now they're playing a man short. >> right. i'm told justin turner is on his way to baltimore. unless he has a strong hankering for a crab cake, it's to take roberts' place. the only other explanation is they may want him here in case they make that decision, otherwise send him back to norfolk. already sensing they are leaning heavily to putting brian on the d.l. turner makes sense, he's a second baseman, he's on the 40-man roster unlike andino and scott moore. he says he really needed another four to six days before he was
1:17 pm
ready to play. he said this morning he can't go more than a couple days without brian. so if you do the math, if he can't go more than a couple and brian says four to six, you got to put him on the disabled list. he doesn't want to play a man short any longer. i talked to brian this morning, and he said the muscle really wasn't that much better. he was going to see a doctor again, get reexamined. you could just tell at that point there was no way he was going to be able to stay on roster. my concern with brian because so many bad things are happening to him, you could put him on a 50-day d.l., he had a herniated disk. he's taken a knee in the back of his neck, jammed his wrist sliding into a race, now he strained his stomach muscle, maybe rabies or mad cow disease. >> it's unbelievable. the carrottop of analysts there. rock, has there been a coje sighting? i haven't seen the guy since spring training. what's up with him? >> cody is eligible to come off the disabled list today.
1:18 pm
instead, we're told for the very first time he's going to throw off a mound in sarasota, the first time since we left there. i didn't know if he was still in the u.s. i thought maybe i went back to asia and closed that door behind him because he is so far deattached from the team right now. he's 25 pitches off the mound unless his allergies act up again. then we don't know what he's going to do from there. there's no real timetable. the guy hasn't faced live hitters yet. he's going to have to do that. of course the live ones are better than the dead ones. you need the live ones. we're still waiting to find out what in the world we're going to do with him. 25 pitches off the mound a day, he'd been throwing off flat ground before that. he'll have to do that a few more times, face some more batters. he was supposed to be a key in the pwáep, a 7th inning-type guy, he could have been closing if he was healthy because they have an opening for that. instead 25 pitches off a mound in sarasota. >> the way things are going, he could probably close tomorrow if he wanted. >> maybe they'll rush him. >> speaking of the closure
1:19 pm
spot -- closer spot, gonzalez has been roughed up the first week of the season, two blown saves to go with the one save he did, and even with that one he loaded the bases working with rick kranitz and is his role as closer in jeopardy. >> i know how he feels. it hurts. not like matthews, remember when he got booed as soon as the gates opened in the bullpen? at least gonzalez made it to the mound first. he's still in the bullpen working with rick, trying to work through some problems. he said today he will not go to him if it's a save situation. this is kind of open-ended. he's in a tough spot. publicly he has to show support for his closer. you can't bail on the guy at the beginning of the season, but he's not comfortable with him. what do you do? put him in the pen with the pitching coach, say you spotted something with mechanics, say his arm slot not good right now and falling way too far off the mound. he's falling into the third base dugout. you work with him in the bullpen like that and then ease him
1:20 pm
back in. that way you're not saying you're taking the closer job away from him, you're putting him on hold. maybe it's another day, another couple days, but he's not available again today to close. >> being the team player that you are, if your information is accurate, and we assume it is, are you going to help out get down to bwi and pick them up? >> he's driving from norfolk. he might be driving at this point. >> if you do cooperate and go pick him up, there's a men's store on the way, why don't you stop by and get a tie. check it out, masnsports.com. speaking of the website, here's our poll question of the day, which orioles hitter do you think will have a breakout season? matt wieters get online and vote and check on rock's blog. he has the update on his speculation about the move that could come as soon as post-game today. it's the orioles and the blue jays, the finale of three.
1:21 pm
kevin millwood making the start for the birds. stay with us as "o's extra" continues on masn.
1:22 pm
1:23 pm
welcome back, "o's extra" brought to you by ford. manager dave trembley in the birds' dugout talking to some fans as they get set to take on the blue jays for a three-game season. five games into the season, the orioles have allowed 22 runs to their opponents, tampa bay and toronto and nine of those 22 runs have come with two men out in the inning. short time ago, i spoke with the skipper and asked him if at this point in the season five games in if that's a concern. >> there's been two areas, if you want to use the word concern, i use the word just evident. it's been evident to me the two areas that need to be improved are giving up runs in the 1st inning, okay? and having a little bit better way of getting the third out before the horse is out of the
1:24 pm
barn. it seems like we give up a lot of runs in the 1st inning, a lot, not meaning a lot, but a lot of times we give up runs in the 1st inning and we're behind. and we give up runs after two men are out, nobody on, and then all of a sudden there's a walk, two hits in a row, another hit instead of you get a chance to close it down, close it down. jim, the other thing is if you go back in those situations, it's usually occurring with hitters that are in the bottom of the order. it's not the guys in the meat and potatoes, middle of the lineup. you can maybe accept that a little bit better. it's a little bit tougher when guys that you think you should be getting out you're not getting out. but like i say, you know, those guys are paid to play as well. they're trying to do what they're paid to do. >> is it just a mindset thing then? >> i wouldn't say it's a mindset.
1:25 pm
i would say it's a glaring coincidence that i wish i wouldn't have to address, but it's reality. >> so there's the glaring coincidence, very well said by the skipper. 41% of the runs the orioles pitching has allowed this year have come with two outs in the inning. when you consider they have four games which were decided by one run already, any of those add- on runs are critical in the game. it's millwood's job to shut down the blue jays' bats. kevin making his second start of the season. >> i like what i saw in his first start. maybe he did get the pitch count up there a little bit. it came from trying to pitch too high in the strike zone late in that 5th and 6th inning. but he showed something right off the bat that he knows what he's doing out there on the mound. he comes from the rangers, one of his best seasons in a long time, 13-10 with a 6 e.r.a. that's not an easy ballpark to pitch in. what this offense needs to do is get some runs on the board for him because he can orchestrate out there and allow him to get deep in some ball games. keep the bullpen where they
1:26 pm
are, sitting and watching. i think millwood will win a lot of games for us if we can get him those runs. >> one thing he'll be looking at today as you look at the highest career e.r.a.s against the opponent and toronto is on that list, he only lasted five innings in his orioles debut. he was very upset about that afterwards. he wants to get at least to and through the 7th inning today. on the other side you have a guy that's become the ace of the blue jays staff, shaun marcum. >> marcum is one of those kind of guys that you don't notice him half the time, but he's put up some tremendous numbers over the course of his career. i mean, last year he had the tommy john operation and did not pitch, but before that he's always been a winning pitcher. he's had 12 wins already in a rookie year coming up, and the e.r.a., you can see is 3.8 here. we've gt some guys in the lineup who can hit shaun marcum, there's no doubt about that. nick markakis has five returns and tejada we've already talked about him, 6-13 off him. show that patience up there offensively today, especially with men on base, make this guy
1:27 pm
go deep in some counts, don't make early outs off of him and we've got a real good chance the beating them here at camden yards. >> shaun marcum a right hander facing kevin millwood. lowest opponent batting averages, right handers, active starters, look at that, only brandon webb of arizona has a better batting average than shaun marcum. he can be tough and the orioles looking for a breakout game. time now for the "o's extra challenge." >> my guy has got to be nick markakis with those five home runs. he's got a lot of confidence against this guy and nick will be very patient and look for the right pitch today. i got nick. >> i'll going on -- i'm going on a hunch. i'll pick scott in the lineup after a night off. 1 for his last 13. i'm looking for a breakout day. maybe even a couple of home runs. how about that? i'm going to out on a limb there. stay tuned, gary and mike are next, they'll have the call of the game as miguel and the orioles get ready to take on the blue jays, trying to avoid a three-game sweep.
1:28 pm
enjoy the game, everybody, beautiful at the ballpark. we'll see you on the post-game show.
1:29 pm
1:30 pm
1:31 pm
1:32 pm
>> timely hitting hasn't been there. defense is okay. put the three together. you ask the guy you put in the role of ace, if you will, to be the one who pits a stop -- puts a stop to the losing streak. all right, for the orioles, the offense may be the most surprising start to the season on the plus side they thought they had. the bats, and jim johnson, in particular, not what they expect today get. >> yes. slow. carried the club last april. certainly today, with markakis on -- marcum on the money, they would like to turn that around. probably a left-handed pitchers concept. that is a good thing. >> well, we will be back, for sunday baseball, coming up from camden yards in just a minute.
1:33 pm
1:34 pm
1:35 pm
orioles baseball on masn, is brought to you by southwest airlines. grab your bag, it is on. and by mitsubishi. these drive one today at the dare to compare sale's event. and it is that kind of a day. looks just like that. all the green and blue skies. really a beautiful afternoon here. we are here at oriole park at camden yards. the orioles include is set with a 3 game series. let's take a look at the southwest starting lineup... strong numbers. lifetime against millwood,
1:36 pm
4038. >> the scouting report on kevin millwood t exchange rate has been one of the highest e.r.a.'s and a factor into the trade, lead by example. we said he had a high e.r.a. against toronto, his last start, last season, threw a 7 inning shut out against the apologize. will need more of that this afternoon. the orioles need a lot of things to go right to put all the parts of this ball game together in one game and get a w here and not be swept by this ball club of toronto, that right now is playing better than they anticipated or others anded is the way to say it. toronto with a 1 game lead.
1:37 pm
and here comes bautista. and we are under way. bautista wasting to time. let's take a look at it. never lose site of the ball. >> that is a good omen. no, that is just millwood with a strike. >> omaha is in the bullpen. sorry, that is just not right. o-1 count. and bautista will take it up and in. and a 1 ball, 1 strike count. bautista, 2-3, lifetime against millwood. and he does have a home run off millwood. 3-19. no home runs and 2 rbi's for the jays to start this season will be bautista, gonzalez and then lind. here is the 2-1 delivery.
1:38 pm
the 3rd, short hop, nice play, side saddle. work with sam cosentino, playing -- juan, off the 3rd. >> curve ball a little off the top and a circle change up we talk so much about. that will bring up alex gonzalez to face millwood. gonzalez part of the of the jays have put up here against the orioles in this first series. he has a 5 game hit streak coming into the ball game. he hits successfully in the year, all five game to start the season. home run number 2 against ferguson. and the aggressive manager of
1:39 pm
this team, cito gaston, who had a lot of positive beliefs in this team even before the season started. let's take a look at the orioles defense this afternoon... he said the bench is very short right now, but w, ggy is out there at 1st. lind is the designated hitter.
1:40 pm
3 game hit streak. life thyme 0-7 off the orioles starter. well over the 300 mark on field. deep, straight away and a called strike. he didn't go around, so hernandez with a high strike right there. >> national league strike. here is the 2-1 delivery, by the way. a high fly ball. that is jones' ball. a good start for millwood as he gets to greet the orioles fans here at camden yards. four hours before you order them? it's all in the pepperation. for me, pepperation is about getting in early to smoke your ribs low and slow over pecan wood chips for a sweet, smoky flavor. then i triple-baste them till they're fall-off-the-bone tender.

this is shiner bock barbecue sauce i'm using. come in now for baby back ribs. choose 1 of 10 freshly prepared entrées plus an appetizer for just $9.99. only at chili's. it's all in the pepperation. about all the discounts boswe're offering. i've got. i some catchphrases that'llideas make these savings even more memorable. gecko: all right... gecko: good driver discounts. now that's the stuff...? boss: how 'bout this? gecko: ...they're the bee's knees?
1:42 pm
boss: or this? gecko: sir, how 'bout just "fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance." boss: ha, yeah, good luck with that catching on! anncr: geico. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance. we go to the bottom half of the 1st inning. let's take a look at that time starting lineup for the el nino... take a look at the scouting report on shaun marcum. first starter here against the texas rangers, took a lead in the 7th, lost in 2009. had surgery last season, only become it is first pitcher since 2000 to miss an entire season and start the season opener, and trouble in the

middle. if you look up the numbers of nick markakis, they are outstanding. >> and 2nd base l is an out. searched at bat here in this series. from defense this afternoon for the cito gaston blue jays... >> somebody wants the numbers. they are standing at the plate right now, as adam jones, tough start, 4-22, 0 for the last 8. delivery time, shows bunt and take as strike. jones is 3-10, with a home run lifetime off the 23-year-old
1:44 pm
right hander. the orioles like to get out early. millwood shut them down nearly the 1st inning . that has been an early problem for the pitchers, getting through the 1st. that is the pitch that jones has seen over and over again. take a look at last year. he was hot. that may still happen, but a tough start. that will be a foul ball. there is something that the scouting reports are showing in jones' work at the plate that, a ball down and away, sinking away, he will not get to. we see repeatedly that is the pitch they will show him until he shows he can hit it. >> that many ways is way a pitcher evaluates a hitter. how they cover the outside part of the plate. if they are not covering the outside part of the plate then -- well, you have to stay there. sit a way for a pitcher to get
1:45 pm
an easy read on how hot the hitter is. he has to do everything correctly to cover the outside. 1 ball, 2 strikeouts. marcum out of kansas city, missouri. went to southwest missouri state where he played some college baseball. jays hoping he can get back in it after missing all of last year. >> came inside. foul ball that he turned on. and they are saying marcum change up was acting like a split finger fastball. he is a good athlete. in college he was a shortstop and a closer, so he had a pretty good fielding pitcher along the way and understands the game. here is the 1-2 delivery again. jones will take it inside. against texas a came he had no decision in. lost 5-4, but as mike said,
1:46 pm
he was sensational. 2 hits, 2-7. 2-2 delivery. gonzalez over. and that squared away. and he will be able to take second base. we will see if they give him a single and error, or a straight 2-base error. >> just seemed like gone got his feet tangled up. he seemed to have his feet sort of tangled up in approaching the line to the ball. so that will put a runner in scoring position and bring up nick markakis. so, here is where the orioles have struggled mightily. 8-4, 46, with runner in the scoring position so far for a ball club that was in the top 3 all last year in that category.
1:47 pm
and nick markakis e only 3-15. he does have those numbers against marcum, 9-18, with 5 -- 5! home runs all year. >> amazing. on 2nd base, jones being held for the shortstop, gonzalez, but not tightly. here is the 1-0 by marcum, so hitter scout by markakis, 2-0. >> i use today have dreams about randall, he was 11-13. when i would have a nightmare, i am sure nick made it into shaun marcum's nightmares. yes. that is true g. pitch. didn't get in. kept it down and away. 2 balls, 1 strikeout. nick has drown 9 walks. very selective early on, even though he has not picked up on
1:48 pm
