playing in tampa bay. he absolutely loves him. he went over to the bench to see zim. zim at the age of 78. 62nd year in baseball, traveling with the club. was dressed in uniform before the game tonight preliminary that's great. i didn't get a chance to see him. >> gary: he doesn't stay on the bench during the game. he will sit upstairs or find a buddy and signature in the stands. izturis, and he will take the strike. he ground you had out his first time up. both of these pitchers right now are nailing the hitters to the wall. 24-16 for new hampshire the year. he tried to -- zobrist is over and he has to two fly balls to right field. garza isn't getting much run support. that's hold up. orioles hasn't scored many
8:31 pm
runs. that's hold up. >> mike: pretty good defense so far. >> gary: seems to be a script on these games. >> mike: garza little bit better pitch shape than guthrie at this point. he has his 58. guthrie at 77. >> gary: pie will take it outside for a ball. garza throws on average over 100 pitches a game. he will be up 105, 110. and obviously with that, he does go deep in the ball games. two down, nobody on. pie had a home run leading out the bottom half of the 1st inning. a walk in the third. but didn't hold up initially with those left-handed numbers
8:32 pm
against gash, as mike noted with the orioles. not this time, though. brignac makes the play and a 1- 2-3 inning. that's seven in a row retired garza.
8:33 pm
>> gary: orioles baseball on masn is brought to you by at&t. find out what's possible with the nation's fastest 3g

network. rethink possible. and by go r ving.com. visit go r ving.com to watch a free video. go affordable. that's affordable for those of you who wish to spell it correctly. go r v. inside for a ball. >> mike: pickky, pickky, pickky. >> gary: here is jason bartlett. he has a double and been called out on strikes. you have a moment here, we will show you bartlett's numbers here at that ballpark, lifetime. he is not someone you want to face here. inside. a lot of gms look at the numbers like this and say we have to get this guy. career numbers here at camden yard. >> mike: that's exactly what happened. >> gary: i know. >> mike: that happened to me in my career.
8:35 pm
>> gary: that is the air in left center field. pie going over and will get there. >> mike: i think i was 17-1 against the blue jays. who do you think i got traded to? they didn't see the other record, though. i could tell you a few teams i wasn't going to play for. >> gary: i have seen that happen. it kind of incredibly, it's the only ballpark where a player has big numbers. they go out and get him, and he doesn't hit anything like that. crawford gets a hit. he is 3-3 in the ballgame. markakis on deck. so crawford, two singles and a double in this game. potential go-ahead run at 2nd base with one out. >> mike: we didn't have great numbers, crawford against guthrie coming in. but three base hits tonight. >> gary: crawford is one of those vital rays on the final
8:36 pm
year of his contract. a lot of discussion in the off- season about whether he will finish with the rays this year. if they don't play well and stay in the heat, he is a guy who might be traded in the second half of the season. they do not believe they will be able to afford to keep him. >> mike: he is a valuable player. >> gary: here is ben zobrist. a single. and he is grounded out. zobrist takes that one inside for a ball. guthrie will bear down here against the middle of this order and try and maintain this ballgame at 1-1. six hits now for the rays outhitting the orioles 6-4 in the ballgame. look back to crawford, who is extremely fast. zobrist takes it. misses. and a 2-0 count. the ballgame again, you get to the middle now and everything matters.
8:37 pm
all these runs, all these opportunities for both sides become that much more important. >> mike: everything becomes magnified when you play close games. one pitch. one throw. one play. and you know that when you are on the mound. >> gary: yep. zobrist has gone 2-7 with runners in scoring position. keeping an eye on crawford. 2-1 delivery on the way. outside. 3 mile per hour 1. so globe 3- 1. and then you have longoria and pena to follow. 1st base is open here. >> mike: the pitch count is starting to creep up on guthrie at 86. >> gary: it's close to bullpen time. 3-1 delivery on the way. a break ball and a good one. a three-ball, two-strike count. >> mike: that was a quality
8:38 pm
pitch. 3-1 breaking ball. >> gary: zobrist trying to get crawford home. outfield place deep and straightaway against him. and he takes that to left center field, and jones will not get it. and pie is going to have to chase it all the way to the warning track. the run will score. going to third. zobrist has a chance, and not in time. an rbi triple for ben zobrist, and it is a 2-1 lead for the rays. >> mike: a 3-2 pitch, not that bad of a pitch. just out of the reach of adam jones for a slide into 3rd. >> gary: zobrist already has a couple triples on the year.
8:39 pm
all these games are looking the same. here is longoria. he has hit into a double play and flied out. and he takes the ball to center. that's going to get a run in. tagging out to zobrist. jones will make the throw to the plate. it's a good one. but it's not in time. so a sacrifice fly, longoria, and zobrist scores. and it's 3-1. real fine throw by adam jones. >> mike: it appeared to be plenty deep. he is out there a pretty good ways in center field. a very accurate one-hop throw. you see wieters try to block it with his left leg. hold it up for a little bit, but not long enough. pretty strong throwing arms in that outfield. we have seen some nice throws
8:40 pm
tonight. >> gary: pena swung out and popped out. 3-1 rays. and ap chopper. shortstop, izturis, and did not get him. the speed of pena with izturis having to make that play on the run couldn't get him. he made an infield hit. >> mike: this is one of those if you playing normal defense it is right to the 2nd baseman. izturis has to come from behind 2nd base. you have to give pena credit for going down. >> gary: the pitching coach is coming up. obviously, he is going to get guthrie through the inning and that may be it as he crosses the 90 pitch mark. that will be hit number 8 for
8:41 pm
the rays. and matt albers up to throw for the orioles. upton coming up. two runs in. three hits in the inning. upton has struck out and flied out. texas had a 4-2 win over clear land today. carmona and rich harden blocked into one decision in that. it will be interesting. i was looking to see what vladimir guerrero did. he had a 1-4. his average dropped to 1.64. >> mike: there is the case of a guy who killed a club. didn't he have those great numbers against texas? >> gary: and he has kept it up. at least starting the first week. the you angels deciding not to reup vladimir guerrero. 2-0 count upton. we were talking about the
8:42 pm
numbers early on. pretty exage rated. here is the 2-0 pitch and that will be fouled off. upton with a 2. 1. brignac with a solo home run. the rbi tripled by zobrist. sack rbi by longoria. runner at 1st here. 2-2. the most two out runs allowed. we talked about that. but the orioles are not at the top. see, the angels, indians and red sox in two out runs allowed. and then the orioles, who have given up 12. 2-2 delivery. fouled right back. >> mike: yeah, but it seems like the orioles percentage of their runs given up is much
8:43 pm
higher. >> gary: these games have been two run ball games. trembley had a lot of pacing to do over there. >> mike: every day is convinced they are going to break out today. he is positive. and you do have to believe that. the game is a massive group of up and down swings along the way. >> gary: guthrie goes full. 3 ball, two strike count. bullpen will be ready if necessary. hendrickson, left-hander. upton 3-2. that will send pena on 1st base. >> mike: you are -- >> gary: runner goes, and he got him. guthrie. five strikeouts, but here in the 6th inning a couple of runs on three hits with a baserunner left on. that gives the rays the lead.
8:44 pm
8:45 pm
>> gary: well, let's take a look at our geico game highlights. orioles on the board quickly. instant offense with the rays answer right back. 0-2. brignac. 6th inning they add on a couple more. longoria come through. sacrifice fly just deep enough. a close play at home plate. take a look at the comparison. garza five innings, one run. jeremy got six innings, three
8:46 pm
runs. garza has played eight you have of jeremy. no walks, five strikeouts, and garza just a couple of walks and four strikeouts. >> so this is a rematch round two for these two. >> gary: a very similar ballgame, as we go to the bottom half of the 6th inning. it will be jones, markakis, and tejada against garza. jones has singled in two times to the plate. 7-28 with a home run. adam with only one rbi so far on the season. in the long-haul, jones could be a lead-off batter. it's a possibility. the orioles would rather not do that. strike taken on the outside corner. this game looks very much like the games last year these two teams played here. orioles had the advantage. you see the runs per game.
8:47 pm
very, very tight. e.r.a.s similar. batting average, a little better for the rays. runner in scoring position a little better for them as well. but very tight games in between those two ball clubs last year here at camden yards. and here we go again. >> mike: pretty good rivalry between the two franchises. i think the gist have 102 -- the rays have 102 wins and 105 losses. even since this young franchise came into existence, there have been a lot of battles along the way. >> gary: 1 ball, 1 strike count on jones. garza slowing it down a bit. rays have not had any action in their bullpen tonight. a roller down to 3rd base. longoria golf. jones retired on the groundball out. one away here in the bottom of
8:48 pm
the 6th inning. garza just settled in the first two hitters of the orioles got on. first two hitters got on this the second inning. after that, no dice. nick markakis has walked and he has flied out. garza only 65 pitches thrown in the ballgame. so very efficient. and that is outside for a ball. >> mike: he had to work pretty hard the first couple of innings until he settled in. now his pitch has really dropped off. not afraid of contact. he will throw it over the plate. >> gary: and that will be taken. tampa bay hoping that the
8:49 pm
starters, garza, shields, davis, david price, jeff neimann can lead them this season back into the playoff hunt. 2-0 delivery. and a strike taken. 2-1. 2 ball, 1 strike down on nick markakis with one away. you are in the east lake tampa bay. you hold it's a wild card spot. you never say that. but the yankees and red sox, what they're probably going to do, very tough to win a division. and that is a strike taken and it goes to 2-2. >> mike: you could say that number going to be somewhere in the 90s. >> gary: there are a lot of games to have to win. the orioles know that. the orioles first concern is
8:50 pm
playing .500 baseball and then moving it up from there. 2 ball, 2 strike out on markakis. garza again working around markakis. a little tighter to the strike zone this time with a 3-1 lead. but being very careful on what he throws to nick. garza's really slowed to down here. taking a walk behind the mound. a lot of deep breaths. 3-2 delivery markakis takes it to left center field. it's back and he has got it. two away in the 6th. oriole park, perfect setting for your next group outing. have a great night out.

8:52 pm
going with a home crowd in the ballpark. something he said that motivates him as a hitter. 1 ball, 1 strike count. orioles down here by 2 again late in the ballgame. bottom half of the 6th inning. tejada .321 career average here. p 68 lifetime runs at camden yard. 1-1 delivery to him. he wanted that one. he didn't get it. 1-2. he played those teams in the dominican. they were something. i saw a couple of them. i threw the first pitch-out for one of them. but interesting, wild fans. so you could see why playing for a favorable home crowd.

matt garza has gone the distance in much like game one he pitched against the orioles. he is going into the 8th inning and he has a lead of three to work with. for him that's a torriential downpour. he has been very comfortable on the mound i would say from about the 3rd inning on. >> gary: so justin turner is going to get his first at bat here. reimold was at the plate when wigginton was taken out in the run down. and then turner came on to play defensively in this slot at ninth. reimold never got his at-bat in. orioles short a player tonight with michael gonzalez, at home for the birth of his first

child. and turner will take that one for a strike. so the orioles need base runners. they got a couple on in that last inning. but they didn't do anything with it. turner coming up to take roberts' spot after brian went on the dl. he was two or eight. a couple of walks. he had a very good spring at the plate. he hit .344. playing at shortstop in the ballgame now. garza, the walk behind the mound. joe west would love this game. if he thinks the red sox yankees play slow, garza this the second half of the ballgame is taking vacation behind the mound. here is the 0-2 delivery.

turner takes that down low. 1-2. top of the order, pie and then jones due up. still two runs after the seventh inning on for the orioles this year. 1-2 delivery. a swing and a miss. garza will get his fifth strikeout. one down in the eighth. visit the official onlinep shop of the orioles at orioles.com. the largest selection of official gear, including the latest apparel, memorabilia for the whole family. get your gear from the official source. the orioles'.com shot. felix pie, the home run. little did the orioles know they would be walt in the 8th inning tanned that would be the

only run. >> mike: the pressure has been relieved sometime in tonight's game in the orioles spot. not so much by garza. >> gary: that is going to be taken up high for a ball. the roberts effect? what is it. you look at the '09 numbers when he was out only seven games here. here in the early part of the season, i don't know how much of that is brian roberts. i mean, right now the orioles aren't hitting top to bottom. 1-0 pitch. >> mike: that's the type of thing. the thing with the whole offense. it's not one person cause the problem. it's collectively. >> gary: he is obviously the igniter. i think i said before, it is a major loss to have him out of the lineup. 1 ball, 1 strike count.
9:28 pm
toward the middle, and a base hit. so pie is on with a single. and again as in the 7th, the orioles are going to get -- oh, they are not going to. i'm sorry. that added run requires another baserunner before they get the potential tension run to the plate. jones coming up. he is 1-3 with a single. key plays in this 1st inning when jones got picked up. ended up in a run down. got taken out the first part of the 1st inning. the catch by carl crawford back in the #th. that could have been a big inning for the orioles. instead of second and third with one away, it was two down and a runner on. and then the hell airs run down. i am not sure if ty wigginton was the runner tagged out. luke scott was ahead of him on a ball that got way from the catcher. scott turned around and came back.
9:29 pm
he couldn't make it. >> mike: technically, they were both really trapped in no man's land it what it ended up being. >> gary: wheeler and randy warming up. adam jones with pie on at 1st base and markakis on deck. garza, the 1-0 delivery to him. a slider outside. san diego had 17 runs against atlanta today at petco park, which is not a hitter's park. they beat atlanta 17-2. >> mike: that's the one club, remember, before the game they had scored less runs than the orioles. but they got 17 tonight. so go figure. >> gary: that is on the outside corner, and a two ball, 1

9:31 pm
nick markakis, 0-2 in the game. nick now 3-20 to start the season. nick looks so good in spring training, we thought he would come into the month of april where he left off. he came into camp ready to go from day one. as they say, judgments made in spring training in september -- >> mike: oh, absolutely. >> gary: will often times be off the mark. nick is going to hit. it's a matter of getting it going. 0-1 count. takes it right back to him. and he gets the out. so no runs on one hit, no errors. and a baserunner left on. garza helping his own cause defensively with a glove right

diana rug. >> gary: hendrickson will try to hold the rays where they are in the 9th inning and give the o's a chance in the bottom half. garza is done.
9:34 pm
>> mike: he is celebrate with his teammates. nice work. eight innings, six hits. three walks, five k's. really settled down incredibly well after a shakeky couple of innings to start it off. >> gary: he could be 2-0 on the year with both wins coming against the orioles. no walks and five strikeouts. hendrickson's pitch is popped up by pena. he has singled, popped out and struck out. over the last couple of years i saw a note. last two years that man right there, pena, is second in home runs. third in rbis. second in walks and second in strikeouts over the last two years in the american league. kind of snuck up on everybody a couple of years ago. here's the 0-1 to him.
9:35 pm
that one he fouls back. 0-2. not any more. it was a 227 average last year. second lowest ever by a home run champion, to someone i use today pitch to, king. >> gary: here is the 0-2 delivery. king man is one of the most discussed baseball players ever. not this the hall of fame. >> mike: true. >> gary: everybody who ever saw him, played with or against him talks about the home runs he hit and how far they went. >> mike: it was the highest. >> gary: some of the minor league ball parks still have markings where he hit balls where nobody else had ever hit a baseball before or since. >> mike: but that's all he did. he strung straight up in the

air just in case. >> gary: tipped into the mitt. second time he has struck out. and the third kfor hendrickson. >> mike: he does have a slightly uppercut swing. you want to get up on top of the strike zone. >> gary: so hendrickson is going to come out of the ballgame now with upton coming up, mark hendrickson working an inning and a third. giving up the home run to carl crawford. he didn't walk anybody. he got three strikeouts and albers up now with one out and nobody on.
9:37 pm
9:38 pm
albers in his fourth game. coming on. looking for two outs in the 9th inning to give their orioles their shot at it in the bottom half. >> mike: that was a pretty good sinker-slider combination. >> gary: upton will stand in. he is 0-3. two strikeouts, and he has flied out. and then burrell will follow him. 2-10 off matt albers, upton. one down, bases are empty. and the slider is outside for a

a 1-2 delivery. one of our finishers gave me a magazine that has a story about john paul stevens that was apparently at the ballpark in chicago the day babe ruth -- of course, there were 10 million at that thing. >> mike: oh, yeah. >> gary: a 1-2 delivery. that is outside. most of them didn't get to the field. >> mike: most of them were on the highway. >> gary: 2-2 count to upton. and that's going to be a broken bat base hit into left field. so upton will not take the oh- fer. double digits in hits for the rays. their tenth of the ballgame. pat burrell will stand in. he has had an 0-3. only a

9:43 pm
1-2. orioles with tejada, wieters and scott due up in the bottom half of the 9th inning. 1-2 delivered. burrell takes it to right field. long run. and it's going to fall in for a base hit. bare handed by markakis. a runner will be held at third, upton. and burrell is on with an opposite field single. the rays have a chance to add to their 1-4 lead. >> mike: this ball slices away from nick. so much so it almost skips by him. a two-seamer. sort of inside outed by burrell. >> gary: here is ray brignac. the orioles have stayed back and played for two with one down. brignac the home run. he has flied out, grounded out.
9:44 pm
burrell slow runner at 1st. that brought tejada charging in. probably just one of those give youing something to think about things. we'll see. >> mike: i don't know if i was thinking about it. that's the whole thing. he has done that a couple of times. just change a bunt. >> gary: here is the 1-0 delivery to him. 1 ball, 1 strike. brignac got playing time the last two years, but not much. he got 100 at-bats coming into the season. big league at-bats. that's it. he is a product of the organization second-round of the

9:46 pm
into the screen. the count is 2-2. >> mike: probably would like some sinkers to have a chance at this point. even if they don't like each other. >> gary: exactly. in celebration of their last game together. back there in the good old days. here's the 2-2 delivery. he is fighting off pitches here. put the barrel of the bat down and taking kind of shorthands in kind of stroke. >> mike: what year was that? 1912? >> gary: you weren't there. don't worry. >> mike: no, i was just trying to think the year that fenway -- >> gary: this one is good. it's a burnt. no play. an rbi base hit. brignac, after trying to lay one down, instead gets the swinging bunt.
9:47 pm
he gets his second rbi of the game as upton scores. burrell goes to 2nd. it was a 5-1 lead rays. >> mike: you couldn't have rolled it out any better with your hand. he just hugs that edge and it just dies. >> gary: so the opportunities for tampa bay continue, and they take advantage of them here with obviously some luck vad involved as well. they have 12 hits in the game. here is navarro. first and second. still only one away. and another game taking a very unsightly look to it from the orioles' perspective. here's the 1-0 delivery. base hit here. outfield will hustle it because burrell is not a fast runner.
9:48 pm
at second. nism very shallow. especially in the left and center. make a few steps back deeper and light. >> gary: 1-1 delivery, and a chopper. 2nd base. going to go. wigginton one. to first. will not be in time. the out on brignac, navarro, and burrell goes to 3rd. two down. so one more at the top of the order for bartlett, who has had a double thrown out at the plate in the 3rd inning by pie, 1-4 in the game. down to 3rd. mig tejada -- miguel tejada. a couple left on base.
9:49 pm
bottom of the ninth inning. it is ollar. where is that dollar? i got it out to show you... uhh... was it rather old and wrinkly? yeah, you saw it? umm fancy a crisp? geico. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance.
9:50 pm
gaston county. >> gary: hi, everybody. getting ready for o's extra post game. but the bottom line is is it's very difficult to win when you score just one run. orioles 1-0 lead. nothing seems to be going right. base running again is a factor tonight. and matt garza just seems to have our number. the rays get a couple of add on runs. coming up in the bottom of the ninth. >> gary: thanks very much. it is a 5-1 ballgame. and rafael soriano, who is the new closer this year for the rays, will come on. that one save game against the orioles. the only one he has picked up and the only chance that he has had in that department. last year he spent the year with the atlanta braves.
9:51 pm
1. 6. e.r.a. 2.97. he had 102 strikeouts. a power arm. certainly in the national league. we'll see how that transfers to the american league east. >> gary: 30-year-old right- hander. let's update you on voting for the at&t player of the game. so far crawford way on top. that is a fig not likely to be overcome. you still have time to text in your vote a, b, or c. and here is tejada to lead it off. miguel tejada is 0-3 in the ballgame. he has flied out twice and hit into a fielder's choice. and an 0-1 count. >> mike: that string of bad
9:52 pm
luck seemed to start at tejada's at bat. that bases loaded, line drive to left. >> gary: garza out with a run on six hits over eight. chance to win a second. down to third longoria. makes the play over to first and gets the out. longoria puts a lot of fine tar right in the glove. so much so the yankees were saying the ball was being pine toward up by longoria. he takes it and he rubs it right into the palm of the glove. >> mike: i don't know it you should be saying that on tv. >> gary: he didn't care. he was not concerned about it. >> mike: well, it sticks like velcro. >> gary: and it's down low for ball. >> mike: i made the mistake one time of congratulating a pitcher who threw a spitball.
9:53 pm
never would i ever do that again. you know, pine tar, probably is stuck to the for a while. >> gary: you can't stop shaking his hand. >> mike: you stick it on the wall in the clubhouse and you're done. >> gary: 1-0 count wieters. single time he was up he struck out and popped up. the orioles' differential continues to climb. it was the worst in the league starting the night. the orioles have scored two runs from the seventh inning on and have now giving up 13. as two more have been added in this ballgame. one in the 8th. one in the 9th. and that is in there for a strike. soriano look to save the game for matt garza. here's the 2-1. and it's up high for a ball. all these late runs, all
9:54 pm
baseball fans know they are called tach on runs. there is nothing tach on about them. they chain the whole complex of the late innings. tampa bay got 2-6. one in the 8th and one in the 9th. here's the 3-1 delivery. and that is in there for soriano. tampa bay is excited about seeing what soriano is going to give them. they don't know. spring training, he just -- you don't know about closers in spring training because you can't recreate the situation. and that's outside for a walk. so one down. the orioles get one on. and luke scott coming up. scott has walked, singled, and been called out on strikes. orioles have been out hit in
9:55 pm
the ballgame 12-6. the shift put on again. scott has faced soriano a couple of times. 0-2. garza gave up that homer to pie and jones got on behind him. jones got caught in the pick- off. that was really it. there was nothing else until the 7th . >> then the orioles did have a chance. but crawford's great catch off atkins and the run down out by wigginton, who got caught in the run down to end the inning. that was that. >> mike: it seems like garza hit his stride this the 4th
9:56 pm
inning strikes. he was having a lot of trouble for the thirst three. >> gary: rbis spread out. long an rbi in the second inning. homer by brignac and single by brignac. two rbis tonight for him. soriano having for a new basketball. two ball, 1 strike count on scott. >> mike: i guess that's been the thing so torture us. they have had some decent nights. >> gary: 2-1. four of the six games were decided by one run. the others by three or less. this may be the first four-run differential in a game, depending on what soriano does
9:57 pm
against the orioles here. 3 ball, 1 strike count. scott files it back, and it will go to 3-2. he has used the shift against wieters, against scott to some degree tonight. soriano has stepped off here. >> mike: he has to work a sleeper hold in the ballpark. >> gary: 3-2 delivery. and throttled back and got him. two down. soriano gets the strikeout.
9:58 pm
>> mike: in my opinion, not the greatest pitch. he has a pretty good sized lead. you take a chance on a breaking ball 3-2, luke expands the strike zone, you are talking about bringing a tying run to the plate or getting close to doing it. you wouldn't want to be walking any more if you are soriano. >> gary: 7. 23 for atkins, including the 0-3 sack tonight. and it's been a tough 0-3. he was denied the big hit of the ballgame, what would have been for the o's. down to third. foul ball. back to 1st base. the orioles needing more base
9:59 pm
runners now with 208. 0-2 delivery. slider outside to garrett atkins. orioles have a four-game losing streak. they will get a win on the road in their first game. 1-2 delivery on the way. that is struck out and missed and this one is in the books. and it goes to tampa bay. they win it 5-1. garza 2-0. guthrie 0p-2. soriano send save. game two of this three game set. our coverage on masn hd will begin at 6:30 with oh's extra.
10:00 pm
this one goes to the rays 5. 1. this has been a massen presentation. how it all came back. jim rick coming up right now. welcome, everybody. it's o's xtr a. after taking two of three from the birds. the rays come into baltimore and get the opener of this three-game series. welcome into our set in the bullpen. another tough night here, rick. again it goes back to we can talk about the base running mistakes, as we will. we can talk about the inopportune balls that tampa bay was not able to catch. you want win many games when you have one run. it's a collective team slump and it continued tonight.
10:01 pm
>> and it's really too bad because the orioles did, you know, the first time through the order the orioles picked up four hits. they had to going offensively against garza. and i thought they were going take advantage of that later on in the ballgame but it seemed like garza was starting to get a lot of good plays. really stopped a lot of possible rallies. then the base running added on to it. they took themselves out of a couple of good opportunities and then later on in the ballgame, we go to that last inning now. we have an opportunity to push the ball to the left side of the infield, and it luke scott didn't want it do it. those are the kind of at-bats that hurt you because we need base runners at that point. somehow you sister to get that paul to the left side of the field. the orioles took the lead in this one bottom of the first. here's felix pie leading off of first against matt garza. gets that fastball. hits it out to the bleachers in center field. so pie hits it out and it's 1-0
10:02 pm
orioles. but in the third brignac comes up against guthrie and brignac hits it out. brignac in the tampa bay lineup batting eight. that went on to the flag court and it made it a 1-1 game. top of the sixth, zobrist came up and hit the line drive towards left center feel. almost got to it, but the ball got by. pie was a little late backing up. as a result zobrist hustling all the way to third. that was big because the next batter longoria hit a fly basketball 6789 that made it 3- 1. here is carl crawford against mark hendrickson in the eighth income. that made it 4-1. and then in the 9th inning after albers came up, three consecutive hits. the third was a swinging bunt to 3rd base. that drove in a run and made the final 5-1. the rays outhit the orioles 12-of. guthrie, very good effort. no walks and five strikeouts. but the offense was a pie home
10:03 pm
run, and that was it. and the losing streak is it four consecutive games. everybody has been waiting for the breakout game. 1-6 now on the year. but this is a slump that is top to bottom. again, the more you talk about it, the more puzzling it gets. >> they are not firing in all pistons right now. they are up against some pretty tough teams. when you talk about tampa bay, they have some pretty formdien lineup with a lot of power and you can't make mistakes. you have to turn that dial up a little bit and make more of an effort not to make those mistakes. make get a lower target. guthrie had pretty good stuff tonight. he could have worked a little bit better in the middle of the ballgame i like his tempo. i like his wind up so much better than last year. a little run support. we have to have that offense going and guys getting back-to- back hits now and doing little things. not running themselves out of innings. >> let's head back and welcome
10:04 pm
back mic flanagan. mic, when you two very bad base running mistakes by the orioles. when you are struggling to get base runners, you can't afford to give those out. >> it goes hand m hand with how much they have been pressing. they are trying to do more than they are accustomed to doing. you see the mistakes later on with wigginton and scott. you can see jones. they are 0-4. the team average is down to .222 on this homestand. home runs, just a couple of home runs, and runners in scoring position. 120. there hasn't been that many opportunities to score. it seems when you start to feel they will come out of it and they will come out of it collectively, right now it's from top to bottom. and when you start like that, everyone wants to take it on themselves to get out of the slump. many times it compounds the problem. it looks like they are playing with about 15 outfielders.
10:05 pm
i thought it was going to change around a little bit. they have a couple broken bat singles early on. i but really after that garza really slammed the door. i guess you forget once again how good they are. you know, we've seen some pretty good arms this first week or so of the season. shaun markakis at the end coming up yes, sir and garza the orioles know what he can do. his track record. 7-1 lifetime. 5-0 here at camden yards. they have run into some tough customers. >> mike shall talk about the match republicans tonight. garza against guthrie. it seems like in the two games garza has pitched, he seemed to tighten up his belt straps. be and jeremy guthrie started off very well and then later in the ballgame he kind of loosened up a little bit.
10:06 pm
changes everything around. anatomy of what's going on out there, please. >> you no, i think you're right. it seemed like garza was pressing a little bit in the early defensive first bat takes you deep. you are used to getting leftys out rather easily. as a matter of fact as well as anybody in the major league. ef was a little bit, i think, mid early on on how things were going. working hard. i think it was the 4th inning he struck out. after that 4th inning he got it in gear. he seemed to get more comfortable. it seemed like he slowed down his pace and made just terrific pitches all the way through. i think it was, you know, for the starting pitcher certainly it was a nice strike zone. a comfortable strike zone. if you were going to make the pitch, he were going to make the call. i think he settled in. he has pitched like that many times. i am sure he will continue to pitch like that. jeremy got three -- he never seems to have the run support when he throws well. he certainly deserved a better fate. but most of the pitchers have had that. and i think they have to say to
10:07 pm
themselves, you know, look and try to bail out the offense at this point, there are going to be games you will pick us up down the road. there is a long waying to go into this season. it will come around. they will hit. they will get better runners in scoring position. these things will even out. it just can't stay in lopsided. it's a question at this point how long can it go on. mike, we appreciate the incite. weapon see you back out here tomorrow night. >> thanks. so tampa bay gets the opener winning at 5-1 as matt garza outpitches guthrie. tampa bay won there and they win here again tonight. we're coming back with more. and here is the at&t player of the game, and carl crawford, he deserves it. crawford is your at&t player of

the game. [ cannon ] for 25 years, the focus at sam adams has been on quality, not quantity. people think we're bigger than we actually are. huge. 30% of the market? 10% of the market. sam adams is less than 1% of the entire u.s. beer market. [ koch ] at samuel adams, we're in a perfect place as brewers. we're big enough to be able to get whatever ingredients from wherever in the world we need to get it from, and we're small enough to still want to do all that crazy stuff. and you can taste that passion in every glass.

>> jeremy guthrie seven strong innings tonight. but not enough to win. verizon wireless post game comments. >> there is not a whole lot you can do about it. guys have been playing a long time. it's not the first time everybody has gone through this. nor unfortunately will it be the last. it just so happens it's coming at the wrong time. i think for the most part guys are doing the best that they can. >> what have you seen out of guthrie these first two starts as opposed to make last year? >> he has movement. he has movement on his pitches. especially the fastball. >> he was consistent -- he was hitting 94-95 on the gun for most of the game. is that as hard as you have seen him throw? >> if you would go to back to last year and see it on the
10:11 pm
screen and see his delivery, you see what it's been the last -- the last two times he pitched in spring training and the two starts he has had here, you would see his arm angle i think a little lower than it was. and he is just getting more movement on his pitches. he is not opening up. a lot of times last year he was up too high and obviously the pitches were up. and i think he really didn't have a lot on it. but he's back to where he was in eighth. he's got movement. his slider is a lot sharper. when he gets 2 strikes, he can expand the strike zone with it. especially to, you know, right- hand hitters. that guy hits us like -- i don't think he has a hit against anybody in the league. and he hits us like, you know, goodness sakes. we can't get him out. but he made a bad pitch there. he hung his slider. guthrie's pitching good.
10:12 pm
he is pitching good. do yourself a favor. go back and look at what he looked like last year. you will see his arm angle real nice. ball handling into right-hand hitters. >> it doesn't look good when you lose. it certainly doesn't look good. it doesn't look good. >> which is 20 runs so far. so very early obviously. but do you consider lineup shuffling or changes or anything to kind of shake it up a little? >> yeah, i probably should do something, you know? you lose your lead-off hitter. that just -- you know, isn't the greatest news in the world when that happens. then you got probably eight other guys trying to make up for his loss. you know, guys are human. yeah, i may do something. maybe just to show a different look. show a different look. that might -- that might get us
10:13 pm
started. you definitely have to consider something like that. but, you know, pie did a very nice job in lead off role tonight. you know, we are just not getting hits when we need them. and our scoring opportunities have been limited. you know, had to goes this way, you know, atkins is going to get on sports center tonight, but for the wrong reason, you know, because crawford makes the great catch on a ball that looks like it's up the gap and we are going to score a couple there. what are you going to do? what are you going to do? >> i thought ty had a good read. i thought luke was the one who started to go and then stopped for me. i thought ty went when he saw luke go. i mean, you can look at it again. but i believe that's what he

chose. all right. >> well, the manager, dave trembley, following the orioles' 5-1 defeat. he talked about how well jeremy guthrie pitched. and he did just three earned runs in seven incomes. let's revisit the base running that he was asked about. adam jones in the 1st inning and then the other base running, what turned out to be a mistake in the seventh inning because as he said, when you lose a game, those things are big. acongressive, yes. but inopportune. those base runners are valuable. >> you can't have guys like garza an extra opportunity. you have to go for the juggler. this right here, adam jones just breaks, way, way, way too soon. and matt garza is smart enough to slow down, look the opposite way. and then later on in the game you see in play right here. the 3rd base, the guy going to 3rd base, because luke scott, he realizes that, you know, he ain't going to make it over there. now they have the easy run
10:15 pm
down. navarro, who just focused on wigginton at this point, just to make sure that he gets one out, he directed a little traffic, told the pitcher to go cover home plate and it ended up in a perfect situation for them. they got an easy out for nothing. tampa bay wins to 5-1. let's head inside the clubhouse. amber standing by. >> i think we're, you know, definitely a lot better. right now we are just going through one of those things. you know, myself, too. you know, i need to pick up things. most of the guys need to pick it up, too. but, you know, hitting is contagious. once one guy starts going, i think all of us are going to go. we are face some tough pitching now. we have been getting some good battles. just falling short. we need to calm down, take a good approach and start over. >> tonight it looked like garza, if the team was going to get after him, it was going to be in those early innings. that's where the opportunity seemed to be. after about the 4th inning he seemed to really settle in.
10:16 pm
did you see a difference in your second and third at-bats and how he seemed to be rolling through? >> yeah. any time you go out there you want to jump on a pitcher early. try to get to him a little bit and hit around him a little bit. once a pitcher like that, once garza gets going and he gets into a groove, it makes it tougher, especially later in the game. we hit some balls well. we made some great plays. we got some positive out of this. we need to hang in there and continue and work hard and get better. >> you are no stranger. you have been here for five years. there have been tough stretches before. usually does it take one big hit or one big rally to start everything moving? >> yeah. you know, baseball is a funny game. anything can happen. you know, one at bat, one inning, you know, one game can get us going. and i think we're going to get going pretty soon. all the guys feel the same way. we aring going to try to help
10:17 pm
out these pitchers as best we canful we need to hang in there, continue to battle. >> so nick markakis waiting for the team to break out of it. as he said, the hitting is contagious. right now it's the other way. although i do agree. matt garza,he was on his game tonight. he made some excellent pitches, especially with 2 strikes. that breaking ball down in the strike zone had a lot of people swinging at that pitch right there. we didn't seem to be able to stay patient enough to make him throw strikes or make him bring the ball up in the zone and he takes advantage of it. jeremy guthrie pitched well enough to win this game. inopportune home run here and lack of support there. automatic of a sudden to ends up a loss for guthrie. >> during the course of the night he made some pretty good pitches. he looked so much more focused to me. look at this pitch right here. breaking ball. down in the zone. if you can stay there all night there, you can get outs.
10:18 pm
a lot of guys have trouble with it. and then all of a sudden this play right here, one little thing where you don't back up the guy at the right point at the time and the ball gets by the center fielder making a very good diving catch. it's going to end up causing a double and rbi. >> and the starters overall now for seven starts op the year, their combined e.r.a. is 3.89. you have an e.r.a. from your starters 3.89, you are going to win a lot of games over the course of the year. so another loss here tonight as guthrie goes seven innings, three runs, but comes up with defeat. meantime, felix pie in the leadoff spot for seventh consecutive game. dave trembley was asked in his post game if there might be some lineup changes, something to shake it up. very patient. he drove a walk. he hit a home run. as long as he gets on base with
10:19 pm
his speed, he will make some things happen. >> we talked about it in the pre-game show. i think felix pie will be a big surprise in the american league, make in all of baseball. when he gets that physical extension, he has good power. maybe possibly 20 home runs for the orioles. later on in the game he shows he is improving defense. look at this throw at home plate. all of the oriole outfielders, i think had is the best defensive outfield in all of baseball. they get a few better jumps on the ball and there is no doubt in my mind they will be the best. pie a couple hits. .364 on the year. got the orioles on the board, but as it turned out it would be the only run they would score on the night. tampa bay wins it by a final of 5-1. adam jones nearly gunned down a runner at the plate. the rays tonight on top of the birds have lost four straight.

10:25 pm
is definitely a change from the onslaught. today i didn't feel like i had as good of consistent movement as i did in tamp to, thorp did i have as good location. overall i feel good with my fastballs. the velocity is, you know, that's been there. there are days you feel stronger than others. last year i had velocity greater than i had tonight. other times, you go with whatever you have and try to be aggressive with whatever it is that night. we always try to do that. you know, that's what it comes down to. i have had two starts. i have been outpitched by matt. he is off to a great start. that's really what it comes down to. you have to pitch well enough to keep your team in the game. i have done that for a few innings. it slipped abay a little tonight, as well as down in
10:26 pm
tampa. i have been outpitched tonight and i deserve to be 0-2. unfortunately, that's where i am. but i feel likic compete and be in those battles. those are the things you look for and try to stay positive. >> how important is it as a staff to keep things in perspective this might be a time you need to pick the hitters up a bit because down the road the hitters might pick you up a bit when the rotation is struggling? >> i don't think about it a whole bunch. our hitters are a phenomenal players. we need to continue to control that as best we can. as we get going, if we can do our part, we will win a lot more games. >> jeremy guthrie, well spoken as always. he put it best. matt garza outpitched him.
10:27 pm

how the santonio holmes trade suggests for the super bowl favorites. out west, who is fighting not to save the lakers in the first round? >> hi and welcome to another half hour of espnews. keeping you current here. we'll have the latest on the ben roethlisberger situation. but first, breaking news out of the nba that could impact the western conference. >> yeah, that playoff race, especially two through eight is absolutely tight. now portland has lost brandon roy, it would appear. 21.8 points per game.
10:31 pm
he's been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee. his status for the playoffs currently unknown. surgery is required. he said he may try to play through the playoffs. doctors say it won't get any worse. but he is not playing in a crucial game against oklahoma city. tied for the six spot in the west. look at the steal by miller. westbrook goes off and scores. blazers have rudy fernandez, starting in place of roy. it's fernandez's first start of the year. durant for three, thunder within four. now durant finds green in the corner for four. that ties it. now it's a two-point lead for portland. actually they just made a free throw, so the thunder are within one right durant with 7 points. assuming that lebron james doesn't play again this season.
10:32 pm
kevin durant, now 19 points aw away. that's on espn, from wrapping up the nba scoring title. >> steelers quarterback ben roethlisberger breathing a sigh of relief following a month-long investigation from mill ledgeville, georgia authorities. he won't face criminal charges after a college student accused him of sexually assaulting her inside a nightclub bathroom. roethlisberger has not spoken about the case until earlier tonight. >> i'd like to begin by expressing gratitude for the thorough investigation process in georgia. and the prosecutor's decision not to bring charges. i know without a doubt, it was the right conclusion. i don't intend to discuss any details related to the events in georgia, and i'm happy to put this behind me and move forward. i'm truly sorry for the disappointment and negative attention i've brought to my family, teammates, coaches, the rooneys, and the nfl.
10:33 pm
i understand that the opportunities i have been diseases of this magnitude. this we believe would better serve all men and would be clear on prostate cancer and a high level of leadership and priority within the government our nation can save countless lives dramatically reduce suffering and overall impact of the disease. thank you. >> thank you very much. mr. gosset. >> thank you for accepting me here. i'm not a politician so i haven't prepared any speeches. i have spoken in a lot of executives in the committee meetings in the black caucus and the universities across america. i think that at this stage if i don't know it, i never will. i trust my heart and my experience and i've been represented. thank you for accepting the year. ali went public with the fact
10:34 pm
that i have prostate cancer. i had cancer in my kidney, i lost a kidney. the operation took 20 minutes and they said the other kidney would increase in size and it did and a week later i was in the gym and fought everything was fine but now since i've gotten it again, i've done things to take care of the cancer and died of a lot of appointments [inaudible] to dispel the talks i went public. i did gentleman of service these days and serve all of the people who have prostate cancer who like to keep it secret. i can out of the closet and said so and hopefully it helped a great deal. i got a great deal of e-mails from gentleman across the country thanking me for being courageous to come out of the public service and encourage
10:35 pm
them to take care of the doctors. an ironic thing happened in some of them because some of them are not louisiana and california and new york and different places went to find a doctor they could afford but couldn't find one. there is a percentage of african-american men who do get it and cannot afford to see a doctor. my heart goes out to these men. i remember last time we had a problem like this when i was a child i remember the polio epidemic and what we did for the polio epidemic we went to them with a kind of -- there was no debate in congress about whether it was pro or con. we took everybody in america. now this year i believe the playing field must be level. i think we're going that direction any way. so we must take care of every
10:36 pm
one in an equal american way. i am concerned these facts have been told and the other meanings are true that we lose an african-american man or to every day. to prostate cancer. i think it should be modernized. i think the mammograms have shown we can do the same thing with prostate if we get a little accent to the research. my mind is fairly creative. i did book coming out next month and i take a train and a bus and promote my foundation to level the playing field for the next generation. if we do not plant negatives in the next generation they will grow up free of certain prejudices we might not know we have so i think this generation is of the inside of making sure we don't add to the problem but add to the solution how we can
10:37 pm
be one nation under god and divisible with liberty and justice for all. prostate cancer is one of those subjects. i can't imagine this great country being fourth in pro and con eloquently about the fact somebody in this country who cannot afford their health. of all the countries in this world i believe that we should be the ones extempore if everyone in this country should be able to go to a doctor. i have a child who like took. i found him home listen st. louis and at that time we felt every child in america should have free medicine, free education, free shelter, free food, free clothing and free love and i believe america is
10:38 pm
the foundation of that. if there are african-americans -- i get e-mails of those who cannot afford to go to the doctor and they know they might have prostate cancer they feel like stepchildren. we have to get rid of the stepped children and educate them to be three-dimensional, responsible americans give them the feelings they are as equally and loved as anyone else who the children of the stepchildren are gangbangers because they are planting the seed. they look at their fathers and see they are not getting anything and they say i'm going to go this way. sign in the trenches trying to get these kids to be responsible my idea is to take this bus the president is talking about putting in the bus and train systems, amtrak, propelled by book, my foundation and tell them they also are three-dimensional americans and will their sleeves and be prepared to be responsible.
10:39 pm
and out of that will come a thought of going into clinics to advance the study of prostate cancer and other things so that we can realize in our mind we are equal and have access to be cured. i find myself special but those who are not special will not get this treatment unless we are sensitive to their problem. that's basically it. today is the subject of prostate cancer, tomorrow the subject will be something else but we are losing people should be responsible and makes the subject order. >> thank you for a much, mr. gosset. mrs. gallo. >> i want to thank do, chairman towns and the committee for holding this hearing. i appreciate the opportunity to speak to you today on a topic that has had a significant impact on my life and the lives of thousands of other men, women
10:40 pm
and families. one of the areas i felt that we were lacking was the women and according to a lot of men and the field of the women are much more verbalized and talk about issues. so what we have decided to create the women against prostate cancer which and the co-founder of and what our mission is is to make the voice and provide support for the millions of women affected by prostate cancer and today i am speaking on behalf of all women, widows and care givers whose lives have been changed by prostate cancer. i should remember my husband, congressman dean gallo, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992 and unfortunately he had a lot of pain in his back and when he went to the orthopedist dated a bone scan and he basically the up like a christmas tree. it was already in his own. normal psas four or less, his was 882.
10:41 pm
due to the fact that he was in congress and was a little bit more familiar with what was going on as far as clinical trials he did go to the nih and was enrolled in a clinical trial and his psa dropped from the debris of 92 down to 3.5 the following march. at that point he had done other treatment options and when he was first laid dustin was alisa postulate three to six months and he survived two and a half years and in that time we still remained in conagra's working with constituents because he felt that is where his heart was there's other stories i've found that people, younger people, this woman, jenny and her husband were both positions. he was 45 he had a psa donner and as a result the psa testing found that cancer had spread for 70% of his prostate. they couldn't remove the prostate because the prostate was spread to other means and is
10:42 pm
now in remission and during their time together again it's in remission for the time being and how long that is one doesn't know. there are a lot of stories i've heard about people going through this and now i'm finding they are younger men. it's not older men. we men truly have a big concern and it is being a caregiver to men that is so important and there's so many issues that come along with prostate cancer that sometimes it can create a lot of terrific defeat could have it because people don't understand how to deal with the side effects. more support and education is one of the things i think is needed for partners and caregivers and the entire family. we've really have not done a good job in that area. a lot of people don't know what to expect or how to deal with
10:43 pm
issues and this is one thing in the 15 years i've been doing this i found we need to be doing more in. one of the areas i found in clinical trials we don't have any outreach for money to be able to use that to go out and talk to people about prostate cancer to let the community understand what clinical trials are and how we can help them. many people are afraid of being guinea pigs and that is not what we want them -- we want them to understand we have something that could help. early detection and appropriate treatment of prostate cancer remains a critical priority. especially among the men at high risk because of family history, ethnicity or other factors the define such risks. physicians and male patients should be encouraged to discuss the personal risk of prostate cancer and the individual prostate cancer dustin dittman at higher levels of prostate cancer including african-american men and men with a family history should be encouraged to undergo appropriate tests at the early
10:44 pm
age. additional funding is needed to increase the promotion of the clinical trials are discussed before. psas isn't a perfect test but it's all we have right now i have gone through a mammography and through this have found out that in this -- 75% of the -- i'm sorry, the head of the biopsies 75% benign so you have the same issue in breast cancer as in the prostate but at least the prostate cancer at this point we do have -- this is the best we have and one of the issues that concerns me is like an new jersey we have the center for disease control, we have prostate and breast and cervical cancer they pay for detection and treatment of prostate cancer they only pay for early
10:45 pm
detection so in other words if they have prostate cancer there's no way to treat them at this point so is almost a crazy kind of way to do things and this is something that needs to be corrected in that respect. screening should be provided in any health reform legislation. in new jersey we pay for the psa because we find it's important for men to have it done with their insurance company. there is a lot of confusion today about prostate screening and i think with the release of yesterday's prostate cancer screening guidelines from the american cancer society there are three sets of complex differing screening guidelines including those in the national cancer network and the american urological association. one clear set of guidelines would be for men to know what steps to take and to safeguard the health.
10:46 pm
for the past 15 years i've been involved it has left me through the process of the grieving process knowing how to deal to help other men and their families. as men and women in congress we are aware what prostate cancer dustin families and how to experience the loss of several colleagues to this disease. increase education and awareness are the most critical issues. chairman towns and members of the committee i would like to see three u. for addressing the crisis and more needs to be done to help the thousands of men and women and their families across the country suffering because of prostate cancer and we need to allow them to have a better quality-of-life. thank you. >> thank you. let me thank all of you for your testimony. at this time i will yield to the ranking member for questions he might have. >> thank you, mr. chairman. the next panel we are going to have will be physicians and specialists, researchers but i think we were very fortunate
10:47 pm
that dr. deweese was able to speak first and in looking through his testimony and some of the things he provided in written material interesting fact came out and one that i think has survivors and in fact a victim of somebody who i appreciate he survived for two years but in many ways the loss is just as great no matter how much time you have to say goodbye. one of the facts that concerns me is that he says for every man who benefits from prostate cancer treatment 30 to 50 effectively have no benefits. it begs the question i would ask all of you both as survivors and the widow of one we put in about 300 million from in on the age and another from the dod and smatterings into other various forms of research and you did
10:48 pm
say we should do more but is this not a disease that effectively until we in the better a great deal of our treatment is by definition a complete loss that if you have 30-1 in treatment that there is a real risk that people are going through pain and suffering and even when they say i survivor the question is argue a survivor of somebody who had cancer but cancer that wouldn't have killed them for says mrs. gallo's husband, dean, who the cancer what. it was aggressive and spread. differentiating those coming up with a much more targeted approach both in her lifestyle decisions because it's one of the challenges apparently we don't know what makes us more likely than here p.m. or african people of our same dna mix but
10:49 pm
in other countries the fact that we can't measure or predicted but no court could be more demonstrative of the people who would most likely about does it agree -- i would like utilities dollars, the federal dollars where would you have to spend more dollars if we only had a very limited amount? what we put in three, four, 500 million more into trying to get these better tests first? >> well mai? >> of course. it's the leading question that knowing -- >> i've educated and i'm the lucky one who survived. i'm one of the lucky ones finding that cancer and prostate. for those who have doctors and access to the best it's still like winning the lottery. on the other side when men have mammograms and make the science
10:50 pm
much more successful we need to catch up to them and to do that we need to concentrate our dollars, your dollars, or dollars to the specialists who know how to sophisticated equal to the mammogram to the prostate suffer because of the ones who fail because inadequacy of pinpointing what it is and i think we have the ability and the knowledge to be better than that and save lives. >> mrs. gallo, would you concur with that? >> honestly, in the beginning when this happened with the and the first thing i wanted to do is scheduled of these guys out that didn't have a psa because i lost a wonderful man and its been a difficult to understand why and again when we talk about breast cancer have all sorts of testing, you start with a mammography then go to another
10:51 pm
if there's a problem and there's an ultrasound and a biopsy with prostitute can't see the prostate so everything is kind of a guessing game and i think even if they say it takes ten years for prostate cancer to get to the point where you are going to see it sometimes even during a baseline at an earlier age might be the way to go. at least you can to keep track of it that way. i agree we need to put more money into getting a better testing for prostate cancer and nothing is free to be 100% and it's the same thing in a lot of the cancers. but at the moment i feel that is something that we have and it at least has saved some people's lives and i think no matter what cancer there will be people the will buy from cancer and others will live. unfortunately because we've always thought of prostate cancer is an older man's disease we don't look how it's affecting the younger population. so i agree we need to put more
10:52 pm
money to be will to find a better way to detect it. but also i personally feel what we have is better than nothing at this point. >> yes i think there is an abundant amount of data that exists that shows what we do now that saves lives, if you look at the decline in deaths since the psa was widely used we've seen over 30% decline. that is real, that isn't the recall that israel. >> i think the second panel spending a lot of time basically saying it's like the hubble telescope. it does give you a picture of the stars and unfortunately it is insufficiently clear to be meaningful to have only those people who have a treatable disease or at least close to only those people versus having 30 times as many people go
10:53 pm
through extensive treatment as received benefits. i'm not disagreeing. i think universally the early detection and improving early detection and we think is important but then that second degree and i think mrs. gallo said it very well are the tools today for prostate as good as they are for breast cancer once you think you might have something the answer is no. if we were removing doing radical mastectomies as we did in the 50's on everyone who had a lump practically we would be horrified at the results but that is what we used to do in breast cancer. we have come a long way. i guess the question as a survivor as if i only have -- if the japanese would only loan us another $1 billion this year for something related to prostate cancer where would you put those dollars first to receive the testimony that we are seeing and i ask you because we are the
10:54 pm
hardest people making the decision put it into research or better detection or better differentiation versus treatment and mr. gosset, use it very well there are so many people who don't have access but it's tens of billions of dollars to incrementally improve the access to the underserved and it's one of our challenges here and one of the things i've worked on with the chairman here is prioritizing at least some dollars to the area that could in the long run because 30 out of 31 people not to suffer needlessly and the bonn to treat early. >> you asked on two areas. let me respond, sir. bonn, in terms of research -- and i do think we have to focus much of our research -- i think we know there's genetic factors related to prostate cancer risk and i think their needs to be more research in the area of genetics and by zero markers
10:55 pm
detection. i would put money there. the other area is education and awareness. a lot of them really do not understand the risk level for prostate cancer. and when they are diagnosed with prostate cancer they do not understand their options and they don't know whether they should be treated were not treated. today people are not educated on the factors, so they will many times move quickly to treatment when they should not be treated. so i will look at education and awareness and research into genetics and by zero markers and we talked about images today. so i think those are critical areas. -- before. i yield back. >> thank you free much. the -- first i want to thank you all for your testimony, and i just you know, when we have constantly addressed the issue as we are doing in a fee health
10:56 pm
care debate we are having in the congress exactly how we take the resources we have and spend them most effectively and efficiently , and then there comes a time when you are trying to figure that out and you say what is a life worth? in other words, do you make a decision not to go forward in the direction which might yield a diagnosis or do you say we don't have enough money and let people suffer and die, and that is a question that i think the congress wrestles with right now
10:57 pm
and i fall on the side of life. but i was just wondering when you hear all of this, mr. farrington, i guess your family history caused you to take extra precautions; is that right? i mean, in other words you see a history like that -- might offer had prostate cancer and i had many friends. center banks about a year ago and i was amazed standing there one person comes up and he's talking about he just got out of the hospital and then two or three more show up and then come to find out there were seven of us standing around and out of the seven of us, four of us had gone through prostate cancer. of course we were all around the same age level. but i was just wondering what -- when you -- what advice are you
10:58 pm
getting man? what are you saying to them? >> number one, my family history should have put me on the list brinkley my doctor never had a conversation with me about prostate cancer which is one of the problems with the guidelines that are dependent upon the discussion between doctors and patients. a lot of doctors do not have that discussion and they do not have it with black men at an early enough age to make a difference. i didn't have the discussion with my doctor which required me when i was diagnosed to leave boston to get specialized treatment. but what i am advising them to do is to know their prostate health to be the only way you can know your prostate health today is through psa testing and a digital rectal exam and once you know your prostate health, if you find that you have cancer than to understand your options. and the options may be to treat
10:59 pm
and they may be to not treat. we have been being treated for prostate cancer and active surveillance. those are the things that need to be done and what it does require some action on the part of the patient. you cannot stand back and gamble with your prostate. you cannot stand back and not be knowledgeable because that is a high risk of death. that happened in my family last year, and so those are the things we are trying to foster higher level of understanding and education that saves lives. i would also which is like to add one other point to mr. issa's question about where we are on the right research. i feel to point out one of the key areas is the research to be able to distinguish between cancer that will kill and cancer that will not kill. that is the major questione
