toe. when your pitching coach and someone is throwing that well, you will measure that drag. when you're a coach and you check out how your pitchers are throwing, these are things you mark down in your book when he's throwing good. >> gary: liriano right now as tough as anybody in the game in the majors pitching. hitting only .206 off him overall. wigginton grounded out his first time up. each team has left a couple on base, two-run homer for morneau, two rbi single markakis in the third fortunate o's -- in the third for the o's.
2:01 pm
: he got him. >> eddie: well, yeah, it depends if you got a couple of hits you wear those same pair of shoes and at one time i was wearing everybody's friend. i was wearing nike, adidas, poniys and also par laid me into a nice deal with brooks there for a while. >> mike: but then you were trapped. if you went into a slump, you couldn't go to another company. >> gary: here is matt wieters. weet rs flied out his first time up. >> eddie: but it was the thought of having somebody pay you to wear their shoes. >> gary: just the thought of it. that was a strike on the outside corner. why are the dh numbers down, eddie? just the quality of dh hitters? >> eddie: i really got no idea because i tell you it's in the college game and you know, in
2:02 pm
some certain minor leagues have it. the guys aren't hitting, the pitchers. >> gary: that's going to be a base hit. that will hit off the side and come out in left field. wieters wants two and he will get it easily. matt wieters gets the double and the orioles have a runner on at 2nd and one away. >> eddie: i've always been fond of the designated hitters because it was my first job. and knowing it's your job, you should work hard to be good at it. he's digging. i know he was glad to see that ball go to 3rd. they would have had a play if he went to 2nd. >> gary: kubel never thought about throwing to 22nd base. one down and the pitch is a strike on the outside corner, garret atkins the strikeout victim first time up. >> mike: i think the modern
2:03 pm
manager doesn't want to be trapped into one guy for the dh role and he wants to use that position to rotate his bench players. >> gary: that one in the air to center field, span. atkins is retired and there are two down. there doesn't seem to be much question that the game is returning to a time when defense and pitching mattered more than the three-run homer and the big blast. if you will, beyond the steroid era, because from '09, you see the numbers are going down, the average, the runs per game and i know it's early, the e.r.a.s better but that's been a trend that's continued now for the past three seasons at least and there's no question, getting the drugs out of the game has taken some of the muscle out of it and has required the teams to go back to playing tighter ball games, closer games and to rely on pitching and defense. >> eddie: there are some guys who really hated to be the designated hitter and it's really a mind set.
2:04 pm
you have to find something to do with your time when you're in ta locker room and not up at the plate. you have to go in there and stretch, you have to do something to stay loose but when you come out, you feel as if you're in the game. you got to get your eyes adjusted at night to the light. it's a job. you got to do the things it takes. >> gary: you really do have to find a routine, don't you? >> eddie: absolutely. >> gary: liriano's delivery, reimold down the line, right field and that's going to be a foul ball. nice catch by span down there. >> mike: talking about hitters who have been the designated hitter, i'm pitching four times today and some hitters are just not comfortable pinch hitting. >> gary: orioles trying to get another run in here and get the lead. nolan reimold with h-a single scored in his first at-bat. reimold will take the pitch
2:05 pm
inside. wieters out there at 22nd base, he'll go on contact with two away. orioles have already done something nobody else has done this year and that's get a run off liriano in this ballpark and his era is 1.5. the orioles got two. thought about it. 3-2. >> eddie: that pitch was only 88 miles an hour but it looked awful hard. >> gary: reimold, .292 off the lefties, .143 off the right-handers. dave trembley said today reimold is going to play. he's got to find out whether or not he can hit. we gont to find out whether or not he can hit. trembley said i'm going to keep him in the line-up. he's going to have to get over it or we'll have to make
2:06 pm
decisions. center fielder span moving two or three steps every to right. reimold's been late on that fastball. and that's up an he walks him. first walk surrendered by liriano, two up. >> mike: certainly made him work, up to 62 pitches. good way to get an outstanding pitcher out of the game is get the pitch count up. >> gary: liriano has beaten boston, cleveland, detroit and cleveland again for the 4-0 record that he has. two on, izturis single, scored first time up. takes the pitch for a ball. izturis hanging around that mendoza line against both right
2:07 pm
and left handers. .231 overall. and the fastball is going to miss away. liriano, you can hear almost a little growning in the seats. this may be the toughest start he's had as far as having all his pitchers and control working. >> mike: trying to figure out, you try to figure out why he's coming off a start where he's thrown the most pitches he's thrown in a long time. >> gary: up the middle and a base hit! the orioles have the score as wieters scores. izturis delivers with two down and the orioles are up 3-2. >> eddie: there's a happy dugout. i tell you, just a few knocks with some guys on base can cause everybody else start to relax just a little bit. just getting by the glove of
2:08 pm
liriano. >> gary: with two down wieters running, scored easily, so izturis picks up rbi no. 5 and the orioles now have three runs on six hits off the left handed starter. >> mike: also talked about it coming in the erdz where the twins have just come off playing the tyingers in a real big series, they played extremely well against the tigers. they may have had a little let downwith the orioles coming to town. not a people around down have a whole lot of respect for our club, but i think they're gaining some for the last couple days. >> gary: going out to talk. orioles having more success than any of those previous ball clubs. here's lugo, 1-2 with a single, first and second and two down. and that one will miss. and he falls behind 1-0.
2:09 pm
orioles are doing it with a base hit. the wieters has the extra base hit. 1-0 pichl hit hard, reimold, this will be tough and here's the throw, jason kubel on the money but not time. the call at 3rd and around comes reimold and the orioles take a 4-2 lead. base hit lugo. >> eddie: that ball was hit very hard. the left fielder had it, kubel before it got to 3rd. i tell you, he made not a bad throw, just a little off the line. >> gary: great to see reimold running with that back heel problem that he's had all year. so the orioles now with seven hits, big inning and these are two-out rbis that the orioles are getting. something they have not done this year.
2:10 pm
still 2-1. jones 0-2 is popped out, grounded out. >> eddie: this is a time for adam to start looking in. they're busting him in hard. if you don't hit it, they're going to live in there. >> gary: 1-0 delivery. fouled that one back. >> eddie: good swing there. >> gary: had one to hit right there. so the orioles 3-6 with runners in scoring position. they were 0-18 coming into this ball game. and in two-out rbi situations, that's been a real struggle. they were hitting .176 with two outs and runners in scoring position. the orioles here in this ball game, markakis, two rbis, they came with two down. towards the hole, knocked down, not in time. they do not get
2:11 pm
the out. good hustle down to 22nd base went lugo. jones is on and the bases are loaded. >> eddie: we call that heads-up play, mike? it was really just a close play at 22nd base. this was really a close play here at 2nd. >> gary: nix punto grounded from 22nd base from the shortstop side where he's playing 3rd base. tas hit, so jones has got a single. he gets out of an 0-14. and nick markakis gets another chance with the bases loaded. >> eddie: that's one where they have to keep an eye on the board, make sure they don't change it later. >> gary: markakis has another chance. right back in the 4th inning they're loaded again. >> mike: a lot of good signs for the orioles.
2:12 pm
just an assortment of bloopers and hit a couple balls on the butt this inning but i'm sure liriano is pretty confused how he got to this point with the orioles having as many runs and hits on the boortd they do. -- hit on the board they do. >> gary: get some runs you don't -- 0-2 count. two down. orioles with a big 4th inning. liriano a walk and two strikeouts, the walk to reimold and this inning is scored. markakis will take it away. already in the bull pen, net up. here's the 1-2 delivery.
2:13 pm
markakis takes it outside. and a two-ball, two-strike count. you can just see the confidence has come back to nick markakis once he got through that first month. i mean, taking pitches like that, he's very confident, sure of himself. >> mike: right after his last 27 at-bats hitting .450 or better. . >> gary: runners off. ground ball to the middle, knocked down, no play, throw to 3rd and back in time to avoid the final out. crossing the plate is izturis. it will be another rbi for markakis, another hit that did not go out of the infield and the orioles have a 5-2 lead. >> eddie: this is an amazing game and i'm sure liriano just has no idea what to do here. he's making pitches, that pitch was over the middle of the plate, but what a play by hudson. >> gary: what an inning, huh? >> eddie: oh,
2:14 pm
yeah. >> gary: wow. >> mike: you can see the look on liriano's face, i'm not actually sure what happened. >> gary: i the orioles have nine hits, five runs on him. he has not given up more than three runs in ball game, not more than eight hits, that was in his last outing against the indians of the orioles have surpassed both the run an hit numbers and the base are are still loaded. the orioles have batted around with tejada standing in, two down. and down to 1st, hard shot. wouldn't you know it. the hardest hit ball of the inning ends up being the out. all the others ended up going in for base hits and a big inning are to the orioles now leading. [upbeat whistling continues]
