reaction in england? sprick it was interesting how the british responded to pearl harbor because this is what was going to happen -- the u.s. and getting into the war meant in fact it took a long time but britain was not going to be seceded but at the same time there was this a sense of why didn't they do a before? was very muted reaction harold nicolson, the diarist i was talking about, wrote in his diary how depressed he was that there were no american flags flying in london the next day. people just were really angry. they were glad americans were in the they were very angry that they hadn't come in before. but it took an attack on him on the americans to get into the war so there was right from the beginning of this alliance there

the british troops, the american troops who came into england. there was a -- there was a sometimes confrontational relationship between american troops and the british. think of this island, it is a tiny island the size of georgia and all of a sudden within a year and a half, 1.6 million g.i. to descend on this place and many of the people in england have never, ever met a foreigner. the soldiers would complain i thought the interest of english, you know, i thought they could speak english. it's not like the english i've ever heard but there was a great class of culture sometimes it is very funny and sometimes dramatic for the british. the american g.i. was brash

thinking we are over here to save you and the british not surprisingly thinking it took a long time to get here. we've been putting up with lessening etc weigel you guys are paid much more than we are. you have no shortages so there was a great amount of misunderstanding between the two. but at the same time, american troops did come to know the british people and vice versa. but it's very interesting when normandy occurred, windy day occurred in american censors would go through the letters that were written by the g.i.s and france they found a third of the letters written by american soldiers from france were being written to the british homes to the people they had come to know and in some case to love but in some cases had become friends

with so that is one of the really interesting stories of the war, these two people had a lot in common but nothing in common at the same time how they came together and difficulties but finally did achieve relationship i was struck by your statement when you pulled if we have heard of mr. winant and i had no idea who he was and i have no idea who the ambassadors to iraq were as well it pertains to the foreign policy in america. it seems as though he died in favor of defense. in your research while you were writing your book and working on a and what goes along with that, were you ever given cause to

cooperation working on true partnerships trying to understand other countries as if they were your own. enough of winant in particular put an emphasis on as did and murrow that we can't be constantly confrontational in the world. we have to try to understand so that kept coming over and over again in my thoughts and i write about them in the book. sprick and his introduction with a line of winant that he acknowledged the accomplishment of such goals would be an extremely difficult task keeping it all together. but adding the day of that could be done anything could be done if we really cared to do it. given the state, i'm going to take you off topic but i know that you are knowledge and in debt on this. where are we today trying to accomplish all these goals and i
