[applause] >> thank you very much, john. it's a pleasure for me to be here. ladies and gentlemen, during this tumultuous time, there is often a debate about america exceptionalism. of the 195 countries are so in this world, america is the only country founded on a fundamental belief in god, the declaration of independence. we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. among those rights are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. that is what makes america an

this evening, to the carroll family. john carroll come as many of you know was out john carroll, one of the prominent signers of the declaration of independence. john carroll wrote this prayer november 10, 1791. it is a good prayer to pray acidic gatherings or a national holidays, including this evening as we undertake this solemn responsibility as iowans. it is called his prayer for government. we prayed the almighty and eternal god, who through jesus christ has revealed by glory to all nations to preserve the works at the mercy. we prayed the o god of might, wisdom and justice to the authority is rightly administered, laws are made, and judgment decreed. assist with the holy spirit of counsel and fortitude, the

folks, i have really good news for you tonight. as temporary chair, i am dispensing with the temporary chair's remarks. [applause] we are here as republican neighbors this evening in a presidential year, to conduct a straw poll. and that is where we are moving to surety, to elect precinct people to the county central committee and to collect a list of names to the county convention and finally, to collect and submit soft tissues to the county convention. now as you know when you came in this evening and register, i just want to reiterate to a few caucus attendees are we at the petition table located in our entrance here with all of our candidates names on their. they are required to garner various members of petition signatures for various areas in

order to qualify for office. so please come your 92 kindly signed this nomination papers for as many candidates as possible. also, you may notice that the entrance tonight, there are also platform submission forms if you wish to make, promote an idea or specific language for the platform to be forwarded the county convention, you may do so this evening. we welcome any of your suggestions. this is grassroots citizenship at its finest here in iowa. and i would kindly remind you, all attendees and observers here this evening who wish to speak on behalf of a candidate, to please let us know that you will be speaking this evening. i've already been contact by some of the speakers then we still have time for some spontaneous ad hoc speakers if they'd like to come up to visit and help lead for their candidates. at this time, we are going to

[applause] ladies and gentlemen, we had some tremendous republican presidential candidates this year. i am proud of each and every one of them. and we are going to take a poll here very shortly as neighbors and friends in based on our due diligence and our consciences and the best of our intellects, we are going to help process that decision-making. and later tonight we are going to elect county convention delegates to further that process and continued up forward. so tonight, i'm we have something speakers this evening who will be talking. we also have some speakers this evening who may come up ad hoc

media that has been going on in iowa, that there are a few candidates that cannot make it. but i had this discussion with my wife. i think that anybody that is a candidate can beat obama. that is the positive thing that i think all of us should consider here tonight. michelle bob then, i don't know her. she doesn't know me. i haven't called up on no committee member or nothing, but i think she should reconsider in this respect. anyone can beat obama. she is a woman. does this country want a woman is a president? issue smart enough? yes, she is. guess i think she has got the capability and talent to use what she needs.

in other words, if its defense commie talk to your officers. you don't act like you know it all. anything like that she is capable. any candidate is capable of may have to use resources. just like you farmers out there when you have a bigger track here, you can do more territory. so that is why i come up a little nervous tonight, but i think that michelle, give her a chance. like i say, she may not be for everybody, but i think -- i know she can beat obama. any of them can. and i think that is what we need. i think that she does not the money that the other candidates have, that she has our vote and the state of iowa is setting the stage for the candidates. or does she get lost in everything? not saying that all of them, just like this gentleman said, all the candidates are good. but i just kind of like her.

i kind of like what she is going for us. she's not a big politician, but i think she is honest. and that is what we are looking for is an honest person. so think about that when you're voting today. we are looking for honesty and morals in this country. give her a shot. thank you. >> good evening everyone. my name is gerard and i along with my colleagues are here to lend our support for representative dr. paul. dr. paul term in the united states congress he never voted to raise taxes. he's always supported second amendment rights and never voted for increase in congressional salary. he never voted for bailouts nor did he vote for obamacare. representative paul has consistently favored the protection of our currency of

the united states by opposing the intersection of the federal reserve, which is hurting the value of our dollar through its artificial manipulation of the money supply and the interest rates will bring our economy into a false sense of security. ron paul is a man who's always opposed to field keynesian economic philosophy and dedicated capitalist free-market economics outlined by the austrian school long ago. representative paul has and was devoted to protect us from the government interfering in the lives of private citizens such as internet regulation along with the unjustified government regulations that are to a crippling small businesses. representative paul's economic plan would cut $1 trillion in his first year of office and cut wasteful government spending as well as the overextended federal work force putting a stranglehold on our tax dollars. representative paul has always opposed unsustainable entitlement programs and even spoke of the realistic of stock option for social security. although honda often for his foreign policy many forget that representative paul has served

honorably in the nation's military and has much support from both veterans and active duty servicemen. representative paul has inspired me at a young age to go out and make a difference and i hope that he will inspire many others to the same. thank you for your time, and god bless. [applause] >> good evening. my name is brandon thomas and i'm a grain merchandiser and i pretty speech tonight but i think i'm just going to shoot from the hip. i agree with the previous speaker who came up and talked about michele bachmann. i do hope that all the candidates can come out and beat obama, but i'm not optimistic. i think he had a lot of tricks up his sleeve and a lot of media support out there and, you know, we are still in a television age and they can influence a lot of people who don't pay attention. i think the key believe to be in obama is having a consistent constitutional conservative who has a record of its third year record like dr. paul of being

consistent and saying what he believes his actions kind of follow what he says, and i think that he's probably the only one who really as the apparatus and can contain and support to go out here and get the nomination to win the general election. so not only the support of all the republicans but also to give the much needed support of independence and democrats and other republican party is to be the party of the big ten. so i think we need to have open arms and try to get some of these people who might be misguided by the education system out there today and the unions and the media who want to as bells all of these ideas and, you know, bring them back into our tent so i think he's a degette spokesman of doing that. he's pro-life. he was a oig dvr -- ob/gyn by trade and delivered 6,000 babies over the course of his career and protect life and liberty and individual freedom so that's why i'm supporting ron paul and i hope you deutsch too tonight. thank you.

[applause] >> hello my name is john and i just wanted to thank sean for allowing all three of us to speak. we really do appreciate being able to take part in the space process, and thanks to gwen as well. he said a lot of studies over the constitution and has helped me a lot first in my understanding of it as well. so, and thanks to everyone for coming out. i'm not going to shoot from the hit because i don't think anybody here really wants to hear that so i will just get right down to what i have written down. but thanks to other speakers as well. so the eyes of the nation are now focused on you as they look for guidance in the presidential election and as everyone here i am sure can agree this election is very crucial in determining the future path of our country. we truly do live in historic times when we are now at a crossroads, and it has a lot to

do with the factor country has been kicking the can down the road for far too long. we are quickly approaching a point where if we don't deal with our financial realities, then it will destroy us. our debt is currently at $15 trillion, which is equal to our gdp. and this probably doesn't mean a lot, you know, to most of us that many economists point to this as the point of no return. this is the moment where if we continue down this path it becomes unsustainable. so, four more years is not acceptable. it will be too late. if we go on for four more years we can look at greece, and that's the reality that we will face. ron paul distinguishes himself from the rest of the candidates because he fully understands this reality. it is the debt of dr. paul's in sight that has guided his voting in congress. and ron paul has earned the nickname of dr. no for his willingness to vote all alone

against bills not granted to the federal government in the u.s. constitution. ron paul got into politics in the early 1970's because he believed in the early 1970's when they dealing cover currency from the gold standard that would usher in an era of big government and big spending. ron paul was right. since that time he has been advocated for limited government and financial sanity. in 1976, he was one of the four congressmen who stood up and endorsed ronald reagan, another staunch conservative firebrand while the establishment republicans were supporting gerald ford. in 2002, five years before the housing collapsed, ron paul introduced legislation to avert it. he predicted the house and bubble to the tee. he also predicted that the dot com bubble and the collapse of 2008 because he understands the mechanisms which caused it. no other candidate has had this foresight into the economic consequences of our government's

actions. and that is what has led him to never vote for a tax increase, never vote for an unbalanced budget, and he is opposed to every bailout every time. and this is why he is named the taxpayers' best friend by the american taxpayers association. now i can sit here all day long briefing on and on about paul's record, but unfortunately time and you guys probably don't want me to. but i would -- it would be an on justice if i didn't mention one last issue and that is dr. paul's believe in life. dr. paul understands that in order to protect liberty, you must first protect life. dr. paul takes a staunch pro-life stance and believes in the repeal of roe v wade. his chosen profession is bringing new life into this world, and he has delivered over 4,000 babies and has 5,000 children and 17 grandchildren of

his own. in closing, i would like to point out that ron paul does not take these stances because of political convenience for special-interest pressures. he has stood strong on these issues because he knows that this is what is best for the american people. you see, isn't about electing some all-powerful all knowing leader with perfect hair and a strong. it is not a person that we need, it is the rule will fall. it is the constitution. and dr. paul stance with the constitution every time. now i encourage you to stand with dr. paul and stand with the constitution. please vote ron paul and thank you very much. i am convinced that he is prepared for the difficult task at hand. jobs and the economy are the most important issue in america, and mitt romney is the only republican with the experience and the real economy creating jobs. his jobs plan as bold, sweeping and detailed. he knows exactly what he will do on the one, reduce taxes, spending, regulation and government programs. key will increase trade and domestic energy production. he will ensure that american workers are prepared for the jobs of the 21st century economy. he will repeal obamacare because it is a bad law and it is bad policy. he will finally stop union bosses from standing in the way of economic growth. more than any other candidate, he knows how to lead america back to the opportunity to decide we should be, as opposed to the entitlement society barack obama is intending on creating. as a conservative businessman,

romney created thousands of jobs in the private sector for many successful businesses. domino's and stables are a few familiar names i think of. mitt romney as key to the success of those and dozens of other companies. and that's because mitt romney understands leadership. every leadership opportunity he has had, he has been successful at. he has led successful companies, he has led the olympics back from the brink of scandal and bankruptcy. he led the state of massachusetts by cutting taxes 19 times and eliminating a 3 million-dollar deficit and replacing it with a $2.3 billion rainy day fund. he did that with the legislation of an 85% democrat. that's leadership in my book. i am voting for mitt romney because he lives the values of every day. with ann by his side of 42 years he has been a great father and husband, a leader in his church and community, and i know he

will never do anything a president that would embarrass the office or our country. as for the current occupant of the white house, barack obama's message sounds a lot like it could have been worse. well, mr. president, it certainly could have been a lot better and we need a conservative leader who knows what to do, rather than putting our faith in the government, mitt put our faith in the american workers and the american innovation. it's no wonder the white house has focused all of their tax criminally on mitt romney. they know, like i know, he is the toughest opponent that they could possibly face. if you want to send a message to barack obama, and i know i do, send it by voting for one candidate they fear more than any other. joining me today to cast your vote for mitt. he is ready from day one to lead us back to a great nation. thank you. who has raised the most money or attracted the most attention we would defeat president obama and our country would be great once again. but to believe this, we must turn our eyes from history. we would have to forget the nature of the problem we face and the conservative cause for which we are fighting. we would have to abandon the issues that have defined us and resigned our movement to perpetual defeat, conceding to the pundits and the political class that all we need is a conservative to win the primary election and a moderate to win the general election. and once this petition is elected, we will solve our feet and wonder why we keep losing. some have suggested we stop talking about life, family in biblical values. they argue that voters are more concerned with jobs, cutting spending, and in limiting the size of government.

yet it cannot explain how to limit government without a moral code that binds us and constrains the passions of men. they have no answer for john adams, who said our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. it is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. these moral issues are the basis for our constitution. and our american way of life. to stop fighting for these issues is to compromise the very and a legal rights endowed by our creator that led our founders to revolution. asking us to surrender these issues is asking us to stop being americans. we do not need a compromise. what we need is a warrior. there is one candidate in this race whose character is beyond reproach whose achievement for

our movement are many and who can be trusted to lead us into battle and win. as glenn bac has said, if i have to trust the reins of power with one person coming in if there is one guy out there who is the next george washington, the only guy that i can think of his rick santorum. ladies and gentlemen, it was rick santorum who ended partial birth abortions in america. he forced the only vote on the federal marriage amendment. he ended a federal entitlement program. he was described as the tea party candidate before there was a tea party. he hasn't just fought, he's fought and won. this is why rick santorum is vilified by the radical left, and as has been said, a man is known by his enemies. rick santorum has taken a rose for our cause, leading rush

limbaugh to say, quote, if rick santorum were elected president, i wouldn't have won doubt any day what he would be fighting for, not one. in of quote. rick santorum has invested in iowa holding over 350 public events and reaching all 99 counties two months ago. no one has outworked rick santorum. we have a privilege in iowa to be the first in the nation. we don't have to settle. we have the duty to lead. tonight rooms like this all across iowa we have the special opportunity to catapult a true conservative for your to the top of the national poll and send a message to the rest of the country and the political class that we will not surrender. we have found hour for your and rick santorum is the one we have

and our candidate surrogates who observe this and everybody has given their ascent to the vote total. i will send another shot around the world, ladies and gentlemen. tonight in this precinct here in treynor, in seventh place, governor huntsman was one vote. in sixth place, governor perry with six votes. and fifth place, with congressman bachmann seven votes tied for third place, we have a tie, congressman ron paul and speaker newt new gingrich 13 votes apiece tie for third. in second place, governor mitt romney with 32 votes.

and later this evening of the republican precinct caucus in treynor, iowa, keg creek silver creek senator rick santorum is the winner with 31 votes. [applause] we've thank the surrogates and at this point in time, now it is incumbent upon me to make the call to des moines for our official tabulation of the results will be reported here telephonically which will also be covered by the media and i will last mr. freeman, again, and sheriff dagger if you'd like to be in attendance for the call to lecturer the reported correctly. we will convene momentarily to select these delegates now to the county convention and also the central committee and we will be right back.

in the door. this is a bottom-up type of process. with a party platform. we encourage your input, you're drafting coming your proposed text for submission to the county platform. a committee will look over that and have input further down the line. it will be local issues, very parochial interest. they can the impacts on the national interest. this moves through the precinct, the county to the district to the state and ultimately to the national convention. in this plot for resolutions will be given appropriate vetting and you can talk to any of the people in the county chairmanship or myself or mr. dreyer if you have any questions about that. so, there are also some county convention committee members. of those will be announced at a later date. those will be actual members of some of the committees. so that will be business will be taken care of leader.

were just remembering the incredible energy and excitement and the spirit of common purpose that those iowa caucuses represent. it was an example of how the campaign was not about one person. it was about all of us coming together to try to deliver the kind of change that has been talked about for a long time in washington, but all too often had not been delivered. it is because of you that i have had this extraordinary opportunity of working to try to deliver on that change. obviously, we did not know at the time how severe the economic crisis was going to be. we did not fully appreciate the worldwide magnitude of the financial crisis. but we knew, even then, that the

middle class has been taking it for a long time, we have been trying to get the middle class back to the ladders that allow for mobility. they have disintegrated for a lot of people. we understood that what we were fighting for was an america where everybody had a fair shot, everybody did their fair share, and responsibility was rewarded. that the game was not fixed, that it was not raped. that people did the right thing and worked hard as some of the families do throughout iowa and the country. of work to got a lot do. think about the change the was accomplished because of those caucuses four years ago. we ended the war in iraq, as promised. our troops are coming home.

because of the work so many of you did before the caucuses four years ago, health care is a reality for millions of americans. seniors have seen the price of prescription drugs lord. there are 2 million young americans who are able to keep their insurance even if they're not getting it through a job. we're going to be allowed to say to every american out there who has got a pre-existing condition, who got a raw deal from insurance companies, they will have some meaningful security. they're not going to be bankrupt. because of you and the work you did four years ago, there are millions of young people across the country who are able to get more affordable student loans. they are able to afford college and apply themselves so they can achieve a meaningful career with good wages and benefits. because of you, we have been able to end the policy of don't ask don't tell, so that any american who wants to serve this

country will have that opportunity. across the board, whether it is fuel efficiency standards of cars, making sure that we have a more effective system to provide job training for people love lost their jobs, across the board, you have made a difference. we know we have a lot more work that we have to do. although we passed health care reform, we passed wall street reform, there are a lot of forces that pushed back against us and want to undo some of those changes. we are battling millions of dollars of negative advertising and lobbyists, special interests who do not want to see the change that you worked so hard to take root. that is why this time around it's going to be more important than the first time around. change is never easy.

dealinglems we've been with, they did not happen overnight and we are not want to fix it overnight. we have been making steady progress. that is what this is all about. the only way we will be able to do that is if all of you maintain the same determination, the same energy, the same drive, hopefulness, optimism about this wonderful country of ours as was on display four years ago. because of you, because of all the memories i had being in your living rooms and meeting you in a diner, seeing you in a campaign office, i have never lost the same source of inspiration that drove me to embark on this journey in the first place. you guys inspire me every single day. i want us to remind each other

privatize medicare or eliminate it, hopefully. they have not said one word about whether the payroll tax is a good idea. whether it is a better idea to give millionaires and billionaires their $100,000 per year tax cut. i just wonder how the ron paul they think the government is terrible. all government, and romney has 14%. rick perry and gingrich, 14% and 13%. so there's an element of fragmentation. >> i'm wondering -- no way to figure this out -- in the register poll that came out, they asked people do you consider yourself a fundamental list born again christian and 41% said yes, likely caucus

goers. the difference is almost 20% -- 24% difference between 58% and 34%. so, i'm just trying to figure out why all of a sudden the number seems to go back up. >> could have had a lot of people who hadn't thought they were going to caucus, or the differences in the polling sample. but this particular sample, we could say if this is right, they were wrong. but if this is wrong, they were right. so we talked about this earlier. several days from the end of the poll to the actual caucus day today, and not only was there room for people to shift or go from undecided to somebody else. there's also room for people to decide they would go to a caucus. >> the other thing about the poll, the last two days, if you take the last two days, santorum would be 22 or 23, and we would

have the three-i way tie,. >> i understand we have some new numbers in. >> a lot of commentators saying the conservative evangelicals or religious conservative wouldn't be as important this time around. clearly they are. they're a significant element of the iowa republican party. >> thank you, dennis. we have been stuck at 31% of precincts reporting. we are now up to 46%. let's look at the latest numbers here. >> rick santorum is the numbers leader right now. and he is leading by about 100 votes over mitt romney. it's still statistically 24% apiece. ron paul is now in third, at 22%. again, we're approaching 50% of the precincts right now. >> now we want to check in with patrick bell who is live with the rick perry camp tonight.

>> yes. governor rick perry just arrived at the sheraton in west des moines, after two lengthy campaign stop. as you can see he is preparing to doon interview with a national network. obviously not tonight -- at least it's shaping up to be not the night governor perry hoped for or expected, sitting firmly in fifth place with 10% of the vote. obviously he was hoping to be in the upper tier category, but he is well off the top pace of the coveted top three. what this will do for his campaign going forward, has yet to be seen. we hope to get governor perry and some of the surrogates supporting him. we'll have updates.

coalesce -- rick santorum spent so much time -- it's fun to watch it come together. >> we want to take a look at the numbers. the latest numbers just in here, the republican caucus, rick santorum, 24%. mitt romney, 24%. ron paul, 22%. >> and looking at the second tier, a recent tweet from a political director from another network, says it's too close to call and they're going to wait for the final numbers. that's an indication how close tonight is. >> the iowa caucuses kick off the whole presidential caucus but not everybody state holds a caucus. many states hold primary. >> in caucus state you win delegates, bring them to the national convention. in a primary state, you win delegates, you bring them to the

national convention. the goal and results are the same. the process could not be more different. >> every four years, we have to pick a president. we have to pick a nominee based on the system we have. i think there's great value in it. the caucus process is crazy. it's fun. and some ways it's democracy as basic as you can get it. the rick perry people organize over there the mitt over there the ron paul, santorum, gingrich, and so on. and you go in your corner and there's a captain appoint, and there are 200 people in the room and the captain says you have 20, he has four, you have two. you have to meet a certain threshold so you see people on the phone talking to people at the next caucus site. there's trading sites. and the statewide office does

trades, i only need three more people. until you get to a point where everybody is organized and you have to then divy up the votes. >> in a primary you go and drop your ballot in, one person, one vote. iowa and new hampshire have fiercely protected their tradition as the first caucus state and the first primary state. iowa and new hampshire are not like most of america. that's their statement in the sense they're overwhelmingly white. how did a lilly white state get to be so important? why should independents get to influence the republican or the democratic primaries? that's not fair, but if you look at participation, there's value in candidates having to go to town halls and take questions

from everyday americans over the course of weeks and months and that's part of the tradition, too. >> officially the idea of all these races is to get enough delegates to have leverage at the national convention, and at the national convention, simple math. you have enough delegates, you win the nomination. in modern times it hasn't worked that way. never in our life time have we been at a convention where we didn't know who the nominee would be. you get to the point where somebody starts winning and by the time you get to the convention, that deales done. >> and now we want to check in with todd, who is live with the mitt romney campaign. he has couple of familiar faces to talk with. >> they're familiar faces, donna brazil and mary mat lynn. donna, a consult tan for the democratic party, and mary a

consultant for the republican party. they know everything you want to know about politics. let's start with donna. you're a democrat. you're in foreign territory here. what is your take on the results coming in tonight, donna? >> first of all, it's a three-person race. we knew it was going to be a very close race. rick santorum getting a lot of much-needed momentum over the last ten days. three people will get a nice first class ticket out of the iowa caucuses and see what happens in new hampshire. >> of the three, put you on the spot here -- which one is barack obama going to want to fight? >> barack obama would like to win the state in the fall so he is going continue to fight for middle class families here in the state of iowa and fight for education and a better economy. we're ready to take on any of the republicans who come out of the primary process. >> thanks, donna, mary, let me ask you. you're closer to what is happening tonight.

any surprises? >> the surprise is how much of the old rules are true. organization matters, santorum went to all 99 counties. every vote counts, iowans repart people would work hard to get their vote. so good for you, iowa. >> we got a lot of guff for being a grassroots state, but it does work, as rick santorum found out. he has been everywhere for years. >> yes, and i'll say, in the case of barack obama and the last cycle and tonight, really involves young people. even the straw poll. i remember going to ames, otherwise, and pulling the kids out of the frats frats and soro. >> if we have a three-way tie will new hampshire pick the one that goes on or are we still

close? >> well, romney is now way over 40% in new hampshire. he his strategy here was to just be where he is, not to get hart. we have different process in the republican party selecting delegates. it goes on for a while, but romney continues to amass support through florida, so going to be hard-pressed to carry on. >> a long process on the republican side. >> we'll see president barack obama back here. he has an organization -- i don't think people i aware how big it is. >> eight campaign offices. the republicans will leave tomorrow, the democrats intend to stay until november. >> iowa, you're the epicenter for the general election. we're never leaving. >> we love it. you heard it from the horse's mouth. thanks for joining us live on channel 8. we'll be here covering romney the rest of the night. >> we have an update in the

numbers. 2% or so. we're now approaching 50% of the precincts reporting, and rick santorum has a numbers lead. statistically still close to mitt romney, both with roughly 24% of the vote. ron paul in third had 22. >> gingrich with 13, rick perry at 10% and michele bachmann 6%. >> ron paul in third place with 22% of the vote so far. what you got for us, eric? >> we have been hearing for a long time that youth has been a stronghold for the ron paul campaign. the evidence of that is starting to show up behind me in this campaign headquarters, the crowd is growing and people are starting to leave their caucus site and show up here at the ron paul headquarters. there's a lot of youth here and a lot of them are campaign workers who have been coming from out of state and working on the paul campaign, and they

showed up earlier. the iowans are starting to trickle into the room, and the age demographics in the room are different than a lot of other campaign headquarters of a lot of other senatorial or gubernatorial campaigns across the state. this is a young crowd. we have been seeing that. that's backed up by the entrance polls we have been deciphering. of those under the age of 30, upper teens and 20s, who showed up at the campaign caucus sites tonight, almost half of them, 48%, actually caucused for ron paul. a very strong youth organization in the ron paul movement. another evidence of that? those people who had never caucused before, of those people who have never been to a caucus before, 35% of them cast their votes tonight for ron paul. those are big sites. no other campaign had anything close to that as far as numbers are concerned. so, tonight we expect to see a lot of young people here, and those people are showing up. they're getting ready to see the

candidate come out in a little bit. we understand the campaign folks who are working on this campaign are meeting in another part of the hotel, getting their game plan together for when to come out and things like that. we expect to see that in the next couple of hours. right now they're feeling good because they're right near the top. obviously more than half of the votes yet to come in. the folks at the paul campaign are excited about what is going to happen, whether it's one, two, or three. their among the top tier caminiti -- campaigns. >> rick perry is in the second tier right now. let's go to patrick bell with the latest. >> texas governor rick perry arrived 15 minutes ago here at the sheraton west des moines, and he is busy greeting his supporters and volunteers tonight. we have a special guest with us. matt whittaker, a rick perry supporter. thanks for taking time with us. your reaction so far?

it's early in the night. what do you draw from these totals right no? >> not to make a cliche but depends whan end of the elephant you're looking at. my presink, a tremendous turnout, 25% more than four years ago, which was blown out the door. we moved into a bigger room this year other. places i'm hearing there's less turnout. so i don't know -- right now it's early. >> we lost the signal right there. obviously. we'll get back to patrick bell at perry headquarters right now. >> let's bring in dennis goldberg. dennis, any ideas or thoughts on the numbers you're seeing? we still have a really tight one-two-three. >> cowboying -- counting precinct, 49% in that's not the same as 49% of the vote. but i'm counting, before we

flipped, i was counting 52% -- i'm sorry -- 52-53,000 caucus votes. if we double that -- we don't know who has come and or not -- that's only 105,001, 06,000. we could have bigger precincts come in but we don't know nat for sure. but in that particular interview with matt whittaker, suggesting in some precincts it very crowded, some not so crowded. so it's hard to get a feel where the turnout number is going to come in. >> does that mean maybe some folks were just not motivated, not feeling the energy to hit the caucus sites tonight? >> if we don't even hit -- again, it's too soon to say that. if woe don't hit the number of last time, 118,000, 119,000 republicans, i don't know how to read that in any other way other than to say a lot of republicans

weren't thrilled with the choices on the menu. >> thank you very much, dennis. we want to check in over at the michele bachmann campaign. she has 3,000 votes. that's 6% of the vote right now. and obviously a very disappointing situation for the folks at the bachmann campaign. cynthia is there with the state director of the bachmann campaign. >> you said it. a few supporters starting to fill in right now. this room is anything but crowded. people coming back from the caucuses. brad just stepped in the room, the campaign director, and, brad, 6%. that's what we have seen in the polls last weekend. you were hoping to see her in the top three. >> absolutely. a little disappointed. the good news is, from what i can tell, it's a great turnout. people's voices have been heard. there's no candidate that worked any harder than michele bachmann. i travel with her a lot, and the last few days, we were starting

at 4:00 in the morning and end agent 10:00 at night and we did the 899 county tour. i thought that would get people going and certainly we went to all 99 counties in all ten days. but the people saw something different. i still believe in her. i'd do it all again. it's all new to me as far as presidential politics but a great experience. >> do you think the evangelical vote seemed to all decide to go towards santorum? >> well -- yeah. indications -- i would not say ron paul. definitely think that possibly we lost some votes to -- there's a lot of good candidates in this race, and as you can tell from the result is have seen, it's a pretty darn close race at the top. i'm proud of the campaign we ran. we ran a positive campaign, and didn't get into this until the last week, but always been

supportive of her since last year, and you move on. this is just one state. >> do you think she peaked too early? she won the straw poll and was on top. >> we did. we had a great organization going into the straw polls. i think there's a lot of things going on with the media, she -- she is a brilliant person. most importantly, there's no candidate that looks all the voters in the eye and had a conversation with them. i certainly thing there were mistakes made after the straw poll, but that's when governor perry got in and some momentum slipped away a little bit. >> will she continue on from sneer we understand she does have a ticket to south carolina. >> i haven't talked to michele in the last hour, and i would -- based on the conversations i had with her earlier, they're going to south carolina and they're target is there and that's the next state they're going to compete in, and i think she's going to do very well from here on out. >> not ready to give up just

yet. we understand michele is on the way here from cedar falls where she was at the caucus at the unidome. >> thank you very much, cynthia. we want to take a look at the latest numbers. we have 49% of the precincts reporting, 48%. rick santorum, 24%, romney, 24%, very, very, very close with their vote totals, ron paul, 22%. >> look at the second tier right now, and newt gingrich would be your candidate who is checking in at 13% among those people. rick perry, as we saw, half that -- excuse me -- michele bachmann about half that amount. right now we want to go over to our emily price, and check out the situation there over at the gingrich campaign. >> things are just starting to fill up here. as you can see behind me, looks fairly empty. over there is where the open bar is.

kevin mclaughlin joins me live here tonight. he caucused and spoke in favor of speaker gingrich earlier tonight. thank you so much for joining us. what was the response you got at your caucus tonight? >> we had a good turnout with over 200 people attending. the money what flowing. we had a very good night money-wise, raising money for the party which tells me people are interested in succeeding in this election cycle at every level. >> right now speaker gingrich is in fourth at this point. around 13-14%. what do you make of that fourth place finish if it stays tonight? what would your reaction be to that? >> the negative ads that worked, and that's too bad. as the polk county g.o.p. chair, i have to work with my people in order to try to put the county back together if the base has been torn apart, and a lot of people get offended because very active people in politics work with the candidates closely, and when they start calling one another names, people can be offended. so we may have a lot of work to

do to dig out. >> should you have returned fire easterlier. >> just today he started saying a couple negative thing about front runner rom originals suggesting he is a liar. should he have gone negative earlier in order to counteract the ads? >> i have been an independent. i haven't endorsed anyone and have been quiet about my own personal convictions. i think he did it the way he has. newt has always been a uniter. that's how he got balanced budgets when he was a speaker, four years in a row. create 11 million new jobs. unemployment dropped from 5.6% down to 4.2% while he was speaker of the house. and so he worked with people like president clinton to uniflite and get good bills passed, welfare reform is an example. a big tax cut. and i think we all have -- we have great candidates in our party, but they should be focusing on issues and the problems that need to be solved to benefit all of us, and that gives us time to go out and work

to include new communities of voters like southeast asians and hispanic voters. >> thank you for your time. kevin and stacy, we're going to hang out here. we understand speaker gingrich is in route. >> let's go check things out at the romney campaign. their headquarters is being monitored by tom. >> another familiar face in the crowd here, david uhlman. a very important romney advise you're. a very prominent republican in iowa. you have watched some numbers come in. any initial thoughts on the three-way tie? >> well, a lot of us thought this would be close. i'm not sure anyone thought it would be this close. we still have half the votes to count. looks like we'll end up with one, two three, and governor romney will be first or a very close second.

>> what dot that mean if it's this close? is this a bad sign for romney or a sign he is in the love and -- in the lead and will move forward. >> governor romney has prepared this campaign for some time, prepared it well to go the distance to become the nominee and carry our party's standard against president obama next fall, and perhaps unique of all the campaigns, this one wasn't hinged of having to throw all the eggs in the iowa basket to go on to the next state or two. should we're happy to be where we are. if it's rick santorum -- we have a lot of respect for what he did -- you'll see the candidate who spent the least time here, governor romney, with his national campaign, being very close, if not ahead, of the candidate who spent he most time here. so we feel good about that. >> what does it say about the grassroots background of the caucuses? hopefully that's sort of the repart people get. romney wasn't here a lot and yet

he did pretty well. >> well, governor romney and his family made a lot of friends in iowa last time, 2007 and 2008, and a lot of those folks stayed with him. a lot of new people came along this time. and we believe in the nominee, and in the spring and summer with the county and district and state conventions, we'll be putting the party back together to have a unified party, bring an independent to carry iowa against barack obama next november. >> thanks for joining us. back to you in the studio. >> appreciate your input. >> we want to check in with laura who is with the rick santorum campaign. >> we're coming live from the rick santorum campaign. i'm joined by rick santorum's oldest child, his daughter, elizabeth santorum. this is her first interview. she just came downstairs and saw the room. what do you make of this? >> it's so great. this room is a microcosm of the

enthusiasm across iowa. >> ow were upstairs watching everything with your dad. what's the feeling like up there is? your dad anxious, excited? >> my dad is just steady. he feels good and he just feels so grateful and blessed and just, again, just so thrilled, and it's so early in the night still, but thinks are looking good. we just feel really happy. >> it's still early. we're looking at the early numbers but looks as though the early numbers are showing a three-way race. what do you think of that? >> i think it makes sense. my dad said the people of iowa would look at the candidates, see who worked the hardest and had the best message and that's my dad. >> you have had a lot of bonding time with your dad. you hit the campaign trail with him a lot. how does it feel to get to this point tonight?

have you secochecking some of the locales? >> i do not want rigid i want to compare them a complete numbers. his total so far are not quite at that level. there are something sinks -- precincts left to report. what is the turn of going to be? we're sitting around 52,000. you think it would at least double and it's what we had in 2008. it is looking then at the moment. story counting has not come at all yet. i am not sure how far scott county is. we still have a way to go. we are not overwhelmed with her moutturn out yet.

>> are you getting any indication without their voting? is a with issues, their heart attacks? >> when they talk about the most important and equality, 31% say the goal is to be barack obama. in terms of being a true conservative, 25% said that is important. strong moral character is 41%. >> he is obviously the candidates you has been trending up here in the past week. it has been very interesting to see that. the numbers that were taking over do not really record the
