we regularly get calls, liberty counsel is working on a couple other cases similar to this with interstate custody dispute. those are mostly being with, we have two cases were orders came out of california and texas, one was texas and one without them being asked to recognize an order. i'm working on a same-sex marriage case in new york challenging the same-sex marriage bill that was passed there. that's my current case i'm working on. >> we have been talking with professor rena lindevaldsen, liberty university professor and author of this book, "only one mommy: a woman's battle for her life, her daughter, and her freedom." it's published by new revolution publishers. is that self-publish? >> it is not. it is a new publisher. >> thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> you're watching book tv on c-span2.
10:16 am
>> every weekend booktv offers 40 hours of programming focus on nonfiction authors and books. watch it here on c-span2. >> next from liberty university, booktv talked to ken blackwell about "the blueprint," one of his two recently published boo books. >> ken blackwell, in your book, "the blueprint," you might of the constitution of the united states stands in way of what barack obama wants to do. what do you mean by that? >> well, president obama, a week before his election in 2008, said in his own words, we are a week away from fundamentally changing the united states of america. if you look at the constitution and its overriding purpose is as an instrument that structures,
10:17 am
sort of check on the growth, power and intrusion of government, the way that you grow and expand the power of the central government is to change the constitution, or to ignore it. so what we did in "the blueprint," was to do an exposé on the activities of the obama administration. to fundamentally ignore, go around, over or under the constitution. so we saw and we see the constitution as being the big rock in the road to the president's promise of fundamentally change the united states of america. >> is it different than what other presidents have done and? >> there have been times, our
10:18 am
236 years of existence where presidents have tried to concentrate power in the central government. richard nixon used his powers to expand the powers of the central government through a variety of programs. but this has been different exponentially in terms of the degree and extent to which the president has tried to concentrate the power of the government in washington, d.c. unit, the beauty of the constitution is that it is an instrument and a set of ideas, again, that limits government. it believes that free men for free women and free markets can do just about anything.
10:19 am
and at the end of the day, it is that constitution that has made us an exceptional nation. in 236 years we have become the most prosperous, the most democratic republic in all of human history. and so to ignore, to try to get around it, over it or under it is a fundamental challenge to our exceptionalism and the whole notion of limiting the government. >> ken blackwell, in "the blueprint," one of the examples you use is the white house czar system. why is that a -- again, most presidents have had perhaps at the most five czars. this president has had about 25 to 28 czars. and what they do is they ignore
10:20 am
the separation of powers, and they ignore congressional oversight. if there has been a department that has been established by congress, then it has to report to congress. it has to disclose information. there's a degree of transparency that is not in existence when you create a czar. it becomes a creature of the executive branch. it is sort of shielded from the demand for transparency, and it fundamentally changes the equation and the relationship between the three branches of government. >> former secretary of state for ohio, ken blackwell. york co-author is ken klukowski. the two of you have written two books. who is trained for? >> he is a bright young constitutional attorney, constitutional scholar. he and i worked together at the
10:21 am
american civil rights union, but most notably at the family research council, and here at liberty university. so over the last five years, we have collaborated on written works, as well as speaking engagements across the country. "the blueprint" and the second book, "resurgent: how constitutional conservatism can save america" are works that we have enjoyed doing together. >> and booktv will also be talking with mr. klukowski about the book "resurgent." you can watch that any future weeks on book tv on c-span2. ken blackwell, in your book, "the blueprint," you compare presidents bush and obama to president hoover and roosevelt. what is that analogy?
10:22 am
>> hoover set the table for roosevelt, and i believe that president bush set the table in his last 18 months for this substantial power grab by barack obama. at the end of the day, what is fundamentally challenging about the obama administration and their effort to expand the power of the federal government and the executive branch within the federal government is that the president has taken what has been a casual tendency by past presidents, and he is the muscle on the phone. he hasn't done it at alarming speed and in an alarming scale. so that you see not only his choice of czars, but i'll give
10:23 am
you an example. in 2009, "newsweek" magazine had a cover story. the cover story was that we are all socialists now. well, the heck we are. but what "newsweek" magazine was talking about was that president obama had reversed what had been done in the clinton-gingrich years to balance the budget, to actually reform welfare and we were moving back very rapidly in the first year of the obama administration to an expanded welfare state. and so this represented, represents a clash of worldviews, and the role of government. we believe, as we have advanced both of our books, that limited
10:24 am
government, of free markets and a vigorous defense of u.s. interests in the world, will and i continue us on a path of prosperity and worldwide influence. what president obama has said is that he really can't finger, put his finger on why we are an exceptional nation. he said because the china believe china is exceptional. the brits belief, you know, britain is exceptional. and the russians believe that russia is exceptional. well, the reality is that they are not. it's not that they haven't made tremendous contribution, but it has been a particular form of government that understands from
10:25 am
which our prosperity flows. and we believe that the second paragraph of the declaration of independence holds the formula. we hold these truths to be self evident to my dad uses it that makes any knucklehead should be able to get a gun is that all of us are created equally, that we are endowed by our creator. certain and animal rights. which means that our rights don't come from government. government cannot give you to write the our rights flow from god. and as a consequence, government can only protect and recognize those rights. governments our rights to our grants are not granted from government but they are gifts from god. and that among these rights are likely to pursuit of happiness. i think of particular order that we're giving these rights. unit, it's very difficult to enjoy liberty if you are dead.
10:26 am
we have first application of government is to protect life. and it's very difficult to pursue liberty, or to pursue happiness if you are not free. and so we look to the framing of our constitution which the declaration is, for the answers of what has made us exceptional, and it has been limited government and optimal individual liberty. and i think that this president has gotten it wrong. >> the two issues you talk about in your book that our current now, number one, health care. the supreme court as we take this interview is about to hear arguments on the health care legislation. and the cycle and i wanted to ask you about is talk radio, the role of talk radio. the city of los angeles recent past a resolution banning racist talk or shock talk in your city.
10:27 am
>> well look, the obamnicare is a classic overreach. it's basically clear evidence that this administration has given up on free markets developing and advancing the health care system in medicine to the point of sort of taking over and concentrating power with the government. this is clearly obamnicare that has put us on the path to a one care system. and that one pair is going to be government. and so it's not only going to interfere with the doctor-patient relationship, it will, in fact, answer questions that one might have about, you know, in the life decisions for, you know, a wide range of individuals who find themselves in that situation at this point
10:28 am
in their lives. so i think about the individual mandate, i think just the substantial overreach in obamnicare, moving it from a consumer-based system to a government controlled system, it will probably be found unconstitutional by the court. you know, as it relates to free speech. look, one of the principles of our country is the right to exercise free speech. and because we normally speak as a way of representing what we believe in terms of our individual conscious. and so we have seen this administration not only attacking free speech, but we see, well, we see an attack from
10:29 am
the left, not only on free speech, we see this administration attacking freedom of religion, or the freedom of conscience. so taken together, that's problematic. look, i was the u.s. ambassador to the united nations human rights commission. we talk about political right and the right to free speech. you know, nobody likes hate speech, but the way to combat hate speech is not to stamp out all speech or speech that you don't like. hate speech, you conquer hate speech with more speech, not less. >> former mayor of cincinnati as well, ken blackwell go you're not teaching down here at the liberty university. what are you teaching? >> we teach courses on election
