voices and it in a spiritual place to make you think you do not think clearly i wrote the book i am proud of. i don't know what happens now. [laughter] like i am going to the jury. [laughter] >> what do we do? >> originally the conception and came about reading about martin mr. -- luther how he challenged the catholic church. but nobody wants to hear back from the black guy it morphed a look at how comedic leave with all the

states i had not been to and but the things that we expect i remember once my mother said the world is not a you anything. even though you feel your entitled. regardless of the challenges we face there was a certain sense of pride. he was very proud to do his job and i hope by instill that in my children but to a nation of children we made this country great coming manufacturing now we are the

nation on facebook weekend like it but we cannot do which. it is a challenge to become what we know that we are. if we don't do something about what is happening we know this internally then we will not be what we were or as good but i think now i see a nation and watch the politicians say nobody is hiring. now we cannot e been invest

the last overseas trip by took. we landed there. i have never flown in a plane flown by arabic pilots. i woke up with the pilot speaking arabic. [laughter] we landed. is such a different culture. the second highest standard of living in the world. everything starng at $200,000. i believe the king paid all the mortgages off and they are consumed with money. at some point* i got

jealous. i had not been in a culture so consumed with learning. >> i am glad you are here. i know you have heard this but i love your show you had a few years ago. [inaudible] [laughter] >> we were putting good deal together and jon klein said we will put you on tv

right now. i was overwhelmed. i did not know what i was supposed to be. it was like landing in russia, of total culture shock. i learned a lot about myself and people. >> no you do not. [laughter] >> do you think we have the

special wealth americans avalon love for learning that is missing from our society. >> i think we have been consumed that we used to make things. growing up, i remember quality was job one. we make in nothing but give you more in vintages. i once complained to delta and they gave me a free trip [laughter] dominos 30 minutes or its free. it was a level of pride and commitment but i knew you

have to work twice as hard. it was a guideline. you knew it would be hard or you knew the rules. and now that is a respective of culture we don't tell people go shopping. after 9/11 there has to be a place you're not exceptional because where your mother or father had a baby but because of what you strive for. this is the first time it

was like going to the kids graduation. all those countries and many have the health care system in germany, japan, they lost those stores then they became economic. we could literally burned from it to. >> we have to. >> i watch to navigate through your show and less than two who you try to

pinpoint. [inaudible] did you think somebody would take something? >> but i would not have written a book if not. i don't worry about anything like that. it is funny. they don't like me because -- . [laughter] you are a beautiful woman and says you don't get dates and give you the reason. somebody will say he is stuck up. i will always be that to that person. if they made the story up for themselves then i have

to be richer and enough to except it. i am not afraid to lose much to win, to be a hero or a bill in. it is a wonderful thing the sound of my own voice. even when i am scared. and i am not afraid. [laughter] >> one device to give to the youth of america? >> the best device ever got from everybody -- anybody 1/2 to know what you will do just know what you want. that cannot come from your parents are teachers but

there has to be something in you that you listen to. that you trust the matter where you go, you have to be in tune with the enough the sound of your voice you can be your own hero. too much we give that power away. you will or you will not. that is how life will be. >> and notice you said you were a high-school dropout. and you amounted to where you are today. i am mcauliffe struck out the and i amounted to where i am today. i like to think that is not

the system that got me there but family are the determination to be focused. what should be done the education and government system to free up the knowledge to make it attractive for minor read -- minorities to have the desire to learn the way out to be just as successful as those they look up to? >> >> he been writing the book and reading and watching watching, one thing that has stuck with me is young black

and brown men, boys, are not educated. part of it is cultural, societal, but the dinosaur had the ice age. we have education and technology age. the dinosaur is not here and of the black and brown mail does not come it will not be here. not the manufacturing base by we have to make the space for the children to be smart, respectful, individual when i was a boy i wanted to be accepted so that i or myself. i will never allow that to happen again. if i cannot change the

people around me that i have to change me. sometimes standing by yourself is the clearest you will ever be. there is a tendency to be accepted so bad that we lower ourselves. people have all kinds of estimations but i came from a man who would do anything to take care of their family. he would do anything and we haq of lost that. you can do it every wanted but at a certain point* you would deal with a man. what happened to you i feel

we've left the boys like you to figure out. the only way that changes is to access education of. [applause] >> not making a choice is making a choice. and listening to talk makes me think of what my father told may. he is 45 years old now just figuring out what he wants to do with his life. it took him this long to figure out what he wanted to do with his life span nec

the sad thing is 90% of the people don't have that moment. and then to do when i have to do i feel he is blessed. i know this sounds overly romantic but what keeps you doing anything is love. to talk about a man he thinks it will never mattered to him but he was

unfocused. >> the demographic of your book doing research on a generation y which is over 70 million, of the largest in history, is there a tug of war between one generation and the other? >> isn't there always? >> exactly. i noticed my nephews and thought education and said i'd made do it. as someone who had books around them by would get exposure and that is important to young people. sometimes that does not

happen. and my book was written for demographics? >> that never directed a message and we can give ourselves permission i want to be a great stand up for what i say. but i think it is okay and i just don't see that any

more. i see the young cat and their light is out. we will do documentary coming out october 27th on comedy central to put the on black man on the endangered species list. it is funny and it is sad. but more that they are lost but they did not have the goal. at least we could give them some level of belief. >> with a lighter note.

[inaudible] >> i say that recognized. [laughter] >> my favorite curse word? [laughter] i think it is universal for the black man. mother fucker. [laughter] i use it when it does not go there. that is my favorite. [laughter] by practice in a mirror. >> i would not say i am working between nine and three but most writers who say their right to seven or eight hours per day are exaggerated in. you just can't. you lose it. you lose it working on a novel certainly. the edges of your imagination start to blur after three hours. even with nonfiction may be three good hours pounding away then the

research -- rest is research, coffee, email, fic tion and usually begins with the theme. i denny. redemption. but the whole process picks up steam when i put to my thoughts into a character that is the protagonist and the character becomes sharper. it is good if only it leaves a piece of yourself behind a few blog of three your 20s and nobody reads it put in 20 years you will have children and you can show them what you wrote and they will understand things about you. right thing even the most basic form of a letter, a

poem or a note is a type of immortality. we all know to lose someone to open a drawer and think they are still alive in some way. the more breaking the better -- riveting the better the. >> regrets the are things a good columnist gets out before she publishes. you spend a fair amount of time at the computer backslapping yourself. rioting -- back stopping

yourself. also thinking how unequivocal below one to be? you do i would not call is answering but taking the long view. so i do not have regret. >> any advice? >> don't write for inspiration. i don't know where she is. she isn't coming. she is never here. occasionally of fleeting live by then it is hard work. of hard work does not consist of thinking about it. i was thinking about right thing of book the notebook is written by thinking about it but at some played you have to sit down if you like getter not. to often
