so you can tell these incredible stories about cocaine. >> you can watch this and other programs on line at booktv.or booktv.org. >> if it were a state it would be in the top five oil producers in the nation. to put this in a little more context, 75% of all of oil production in california is done in kern county. and over 50% of the natural gas that is produced in california is right here in kern county. so we are really looking at, in this county, oil along with agriculture. they are the two largest industries that we have to. and it really turns the economy. >> explore the history and literate life of bakersfield, california, this weekend on c-span2's booktv and american

history tv on c-span3. >> booktv attended a publication party for eric draper, chief white house photographer during all eight years of george w. bush's administration. we followed mr. draper as he talked to guests and gave a brief presentation that featured photos from his book, "front row seat." this is about 15 minutes. >> how have you been? >> i know. she is right there, too. [inaudible] >> it's about time.

9:19 am
pleasure for adelman to host the event here tonight. and without i would like to introduce anita mcbride, former chief of staff for mrs. laura bush. [applause] spent good evening, everyone. thanks so much for coming. this has been an incredible turnout and, in fact, eric, as you know, he was on fox news as one of the interviews and i went on facebook and i said when are you going to do this party in washington? he responded right back. if you would be willing to host it las -- [laughter] >> brian mccormick to help, all the cohosts, i don't want to start with names because of will forget all 30 of you that were willing to support this and also your book that is out front so we thank you so much for doing that. we know that we had an
9:20 am
incredible turnout. we had responses as you know beyond a waiting list. so we know we run out of books. i was just told, however, we were prepared if that was possible you can still order the book and eric will sign -- nice and big, beautiful. they will go on that page we signed. you can take these entities will be in your book. we don't want you to wait anymore. the books are selling out like crazy at work where they are on sale. we're so proud of you. all the photographers that were on the staff that supported us as well for eight years. so we congratulate you. and this is such an incredible turnout. >> thank you. this is great. [applause]
9:21 am
>> especially for those are waiting outside, please come if you can get to the reception, you have earned it. there is beer and wine. we have wonderful sponsors who support it. rebecca spicer who supported us with the beer. so thank them for making it possible for us to enjoy a lovely evening. so thank you all. [applause] >> thank you. well, first of all i want to thank david for hosting the event, overwhelming to see everyone here. and then anita for responding to i'm so glad i got that message last night and wonderful, i can't thank you enough for you to do this for me. really appreciate it. i never thought that something like this could happen to someone like me, an ordinary guy, but all of you out there, especially the folks that work
9:22 am
for the inspiration. i need to thank y'all because you helped me with my success, and i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. i'm overwhelmed, and what i would like to do, which a more comfortable behind the camera and in front of the camera, i would like to show you some photos. a quick little presentation, and what i decided to do was to take a favorite photo from each chapter. one of the questions i get a lot is what's your favorite photo? well, i'll take a photo from each chapter starting with -- [laughter] chapter one. and this chapter is called the beginning. a lot of you who know president bush remember how timely he is. and we know how timely he is
9:23 am
because he started his meetings on time or early. typically early. and so this is a great illustration. this picture was made the first week of his administration, and obviously the vp is in sync with the president which is great. chapter two, this chapter is called life in the bubble. and by the way, this is not representative of the relationship with the president and mrs. bush. don't get me in trouble, okay? let me set the stage. this is inside buckingham palace, and the president and mrs. bush are clowning around for the camera for me. this will help show the president had a great sense of humor, and buckingham house is like the white house but bigger, as you can see. [laughter] chapter three is called family. and whenever the two presidents were together for me it was like
9:24 am
a magical moment. first of all you have a history. the only second son of the present day become president. and one of the first things i learned was when of you say mr. president around them, they both turn around. [laughter] so i had to learn, refer them as prescient 41, president 43. chapter four, the western white house. this is by one of my favorite photos in the book. this is a great illustration of the president on the ranch. route texan and something about the picture you can really see but barney is sitting on his lap. we will all ms. varney. chapter five is on 9/11. this moment here is very critical. you might notice there is a clock on the wall, around 9:25. and the president was so focused on gathering information,
9:25 am
gathering his thoughts, preparing for a statement to the country and to the world. at this moment on the television they are replaying the video of the second tower getting hit, and that horrific image of the fireball. we hadn't seen at this stage at this time. so dan bartlett alerted everyone in the room at this stage, the president turned around and saw that horrific image that is burned in everyone's memory. chapter six, wore president. and this moment in terms of intensity is probably obviously 9/11 was off the charts but this was the moment, moments after the president decided to send troops to iraq. he made that decision in the situation room just moments earlier before this moment. and i photographed the beginning of the meeting, and i photographed the president walking around the south lawn.
9:26 am
and i noticed that he was very emotional. i knew something was big. i did know exactly what is happening so i made this image and you can see the way that decision is on his face. the president actually spoke to me right after i made this picture. and he said, eric, are you interested in history? and all i could say was, yes or. he said, the pictures you're making are very important. the one in a situation and the one here in the south lawn. and just as he said that, out of the corner of my eye, rumsfeld and cheney can walk out of the oval office and the president walked over to greet them, and they were deciding on the timing of the start of the war. chapter seven called to the world. i travele traveled to newly 70 y with president bush, and on this trip, i believe this was 2007, the presidents -- the president traveled to kosovo. there's a small town there, and
9:27 am
he's the first american president to visit that country. as you can see they are very happy to see them. if such a unique moment. about the only time i've seen this many hands on the president. i'm sure the secret agents are -- [laughter] and the final chapter is called sprint to the finish. this is the moment the president leaves the oval office for the very last time, january 20, 2009. and i was there eight years earlier to the day when the president walked through that door for the first time. and through the years i always wondered, then, what with that moment be like. i thought it would be emotional. i thought would be crying and hugging, but it was very simple. the president around 8:00, he called for his coat, he put his coat on and walked out without turning back.
9:28 am
and so that's my mini slideshow. [applause] and again, i want to thank all of you for coming here. and want to give a special thanks to mary.
