chance to attack this one. >> i this i that one of the things that the book end with is the impact of technology that they will have on the transformation of the academy. and think that clear if we can fix the creditation which is the broken as the fm aide system itself, we can move much more rapidly and most of you have probably been familiar with badges. but i think that in competencey based education, we will see badges that are developed to assess competence he's in multiple fields of endeavour, including entrepreneurial skills. if you can imagine a badge that was ordered by the consortium of the silicon valley companies and recognizing entrepreneurial skills, the badge may be worth far more than a computer science degree or an mba. i think that as we will more
3:16 pm
rapidly move into competencey based education. employer based designation and skill sets for badges that it will be one of the most important things in the technological transformation of the academy going forward. >> that is not an unold fashion program that you talk about the. i will take one more question. and i want to go way to the back. we were talking to those in the front and giving them an unfair advantage. >> i had a question about --. not st. john's college but the different one. but yeah. basketball. >> no. we talked a lot about out standing student loan debt. what do you think should be done because you really cannot discharge this unany circumstances. you will have to pass attest that pretty impossible. the debts were paid for by the taxpayers. so is unjust to forgive it and how does that stand in the strong tradition of
3:17 pm
bankruptcy we have in this country? what do we do with the debt that is out there? >> good question. david? >> it is unjust to forgive it. it sounds horrible but this was you know. a private decision made somebody decided to take advantage of the public subsid skpechlt calculated investment that has not worryinged out so well. now, what can someone who finds themselves thousands in debt and does% want to be there? >> there is more education that is how people get and more and more and more in debt and get themselves in bad places but if you wanted to if you are a sociology major $60,000 in debt. and you do not want to be there, there is the colorado school of minds for you. and go and get a degree in the mineral and petroleum engineering and get out there in north dakota where the average salary has increased by 40%. since 2009 because of the oil and the natural gas boom
3:18 pm
out there. so i think that it is a tough question. i don't think that we should be in the business of for student loan debt but there is a personal responsibility element there that is orthodox. >> i agree with david. we should not be for giving it. as a matter of public policy. unfortunately we are. we public service loan forgiveness. teacher loan forgiveness and murrieta of loan forgive 234es programs already. and anybody else that is struggling with debt is potentially eligible for income based repayment at the end of which we for by the debt. so you know, i think that the unfortunate answer is we have built in alternatives to the bankruptcy discharge and that simply is a reality. the costs of those forgive 234es programs then are ultimately cycled back and paid for by the other participants in the program. >> i think that a very important message here of
3:19 pm
the book. and of discussion is to be cleared and truthful over what we are doing. with the simple truths like, if two of the people are having post and secondary education, then it cannot be all of them will make over the median income that is math. yet what do you hear every time that you read a popular article on this? >> you will make more money than half of the people at least if you get an education. and we will have to be precisely honest over what we are doing and what is consumption. and what is investment. what are the likely investments to be? what does it really mean to be in debt. and dischargeable or not. and i this i that this book is a really strong set of forward in getting a more clear eyed with ourselves
3:20 pm
and society with what is going on here, as was the discussion for the day. we will thank our excellent panel. [applause] we want to introduce to you first time author randi zuckerberg. new book coming out in the fall. >> double author. how exciting is that? >> thank you. so my books are dot-com indicated for adult and do the for children. i spent the last eight work at facebook and building my own company in silicon valley. one thing that i realized is that there is a whole world that people are fascinated entrepreneurship technology,
3:21 pm
and someone needs demystify it for everyone else. so do the complicate is the the crazy tech obsessed world we live in and how it is changing our careers, lives and our families. >> how do you do that? >> it is interesting but i talk a lot about finding tech life balance. there was a lot of work life balance but if you go home from work and you are still buried in your cell phone. and sitting on your laptop next to your at home you are still working. you have not really found that work life balance. so i talk a lot about how to find tech life balance in your home. your job. in your love life. and all areas of communication. >> you are saying turn off the devices and go off of the facebook? >> you know what? i think this is a time and place for everything. i do think that if you take a little bit of time to unplug and remember that there is a when you look up from the screen that you can enjoy it, it will make you
3:22 pm
all the more productive and refreshed and relaxed when you return to that online world also. >> is there a danger of technology? too much onlineness? >> i talk a lot in the book about the phenomena of being closer from to friends and further from friendships. we live in a world where you can keep in touch with thousands and thousands of strangers and everybody that you have ever met. if you are buried in the device. you are ignoring the people that you love. right next to you. >> so i this i that we really have to be conscious. technology. we can do amazing things. with technology. this is so powerful. facebook is an incredible too many. we have to remember that we own the devices and not the devices owning us. >> have we -- are people recognizing that today? >> think so. i recently started here past couple of weeks and months. a lot of chatter about the pendulum. going back from being 24-7 connected all of the time. and wanting. so people wanting some time
3:23 pm
to unplug and disconnect. there is all of the applicationes to go on. digital detox to collect a phone at the door. or there is a hotel in dc that will lock your phone up and you can check in [laughter] >> and people are responding to this? >> people want that. they are paying for that. so people are really seeing and recognizing that we are almost tech addicted and obsessed in the culture. that we will need to reclaim a little bit of our life back. that also drew me the write a children's picture book. they are not just adults that are tech obsessed. my own 2-year-old son would walk up to a picture frame and swipe it and ask for elmo barney. so we have lived in the culture. our toddlers are tech obsess and i wanted to write a children's picture book on the same topic of finding the tech-life balance and remembering there is a beautiful world out there too for our kids into when it comes to the children's book how to you approach it. >> it has a strong female
3:24 pm
tech character named the do the. she a spunky little girl. and she has her tablet and her phone. and skyping. and she is talking to everyone all of the time. and her mom will force her to go out into the real world and the second half of the book. all of the amazing adventures in the real world to echo what she is doing on the digital devices. and so randy zuckerberg. you are being disloyal to your old company. >> facebook is an amazing amazing tool. used for so much good. i had a front row seat and showing facebook's role in shaping elections. olympics. and responsiving to natural disasters and what happened with the tornado last week and the ability for people to go onto the social media and to provide relief. there is nothing like that in the world. we will need to always
3:25 pm
remember to find balance. have you people that you love in your life. next to you. real people. so it is all. everything in life. and moderation. >> what does your brother think of your approach. >> he is really excited for the book. and i this i that we are just putting finishing touches on it right now. so no one has read it yet. we will see. randi where did you grow up? >> right here in westchester new york. >> great to be in new york. >> my parents are both doctors my dad is a dentist. my mom is a psychiatrist. my dad was very tech savvy, from early on. i talk about that a lot in the book and my first introduction to the magic of technology that came through my dad and his office. and impact it had on the whole family. and the impact that had with facebook. and how this changed all of us. when were you involved in facebook? >> 2005. and working at the
3:26 pm
advertising agency here in new york city. and i how much it was taking off. and i was working in digital marketing at the time. he needed somebody that had in digital market as a new space. and i went out to california and was blown away. by what i saw out there so i think that you know. when i read my book i had amazing experiences with facebook. and i use it all of the time. it is a positive feel good story how technology can make our lives so much more amazing. and also a little bit of a reminder to find balance. >>al have you a website. dot-com indicated.com. >> i do. >>. do the complicated so in the book because of the long lead time of publishing, i did not want to put specific apps and the websites.
3:27 pm
unless you never know in technology. and what would be outdated by november when the book comes out so i launched a companion website for people to get updated recommendations and break downs of latest apps and given to you with a big sister guide to the modern world style. if somebody goes to the web site. and they register. what will they be able to consolidate or what will they be able to find? >> we have a twice weekly news letter to the breakdown everything that is going on in the modern world and the latest tech how tech will help in the family. your life. career also we will be launching broader website along the same time as the book and you will be able to get great content team. writers and they have joined the community a little bit more in-depth. and do the is coming out in november. >>. right they are coming out november 5th in time for the holidays. so hopefully folks that are
3:28 pm
considering what to get for the tech obsessed friends and family for the holidays will now have an adult book and a children's picture book. and talking here. book tv with new author randi zuckerberg. coming out in november. >> thank you. >> thanks. that is the look at the books being published this week.
