some projection csis 30% of vote may go to the uk independence party, the party that campaigns for britain to leave the european union but also it has ever some influence upon immigration issues. and it wants a significant tightening of immigration restrictions, including for immigrants coming from parts of eastern europe including romania, bulgaria for example. turning to your question, you know, i think the uk independence party, if margaret thatcher was in power today, the uk independence party would probably be irrelevant. because thatcher would today be saying to the british people, get out of the eu, free yourselves from a huge burden on the british people, cost the british taxpayer a great deal of

money. and why let the bureaucrats in brussels tell the british people to do? as i think the uk independence party, which is heavily made up of, not entirely, but in large part former conservative party members who left the party because they feel the party has deserted them. i think it's thatcher were in power, there wouldn't be a uk independence party. she never spoke publicly about uk in private conversations i had with it. she also didn't talk about the uk independence party. but she would have treated those who vote for the uk independence party with respect. she would not be sneering at them, at some leading figures in the conservative party have done, including prime minister. her view was that you want to

appeal to voters to you want to get them to vote for you. you're not going to get them to vote for you by condemning them and attacking them, which is i think part of the reason why, you know, the conservative party could well struggle in 2015. because so many conservative party members are voting for uk independence party. she never commented on uk but there's no doubt about it. she would not be dismissing these voters or their concerns. and our message always in the conservative party has been that the conservative party needs to stick to its core principles but if you don't, people are going to abandon you and go elsewhere. thank you. applause not. >> -- [applause] spent thank you for the very interesting remarks. this concludes our event today.

what is the topic of your book? >> at the core, it's about domestic surveillance and i think the time has really come on that topic as far as the u.s. discussion goes. whether we're talking about the nsa or the fbi or the cia, or in this case the nypd teaming up with the cia. since 9/11 we've seen an explosion in the surveillance industry and the surveillance state, and what we did is we follow a narrative of about 72 hours inside new york city with three guys with a bomb trained by osama bin laden and we take a look at what works and what doesn't he gets people like this and to prevent terrorist attacks and what do we really need to give up as far as liberties go to get there. >> did the new york police

department cooperative? >> officially, no. the official nypd certainly did not. we were lucky that we have help from many, many men and women current and former from nypd, fbi, cia and other three letter agencies spent is the new police department the only local police department with an intelligence unit? laugh..
