contradictions. i don't think they have any problems navigating those scenario. what they are trying to do is defensible under the law of the sea because they have the idea of thec continental shelf. they may see it as not quite a great contradiction as you are laying out. but the neighbors do certainly. i think more than that china has shown an unwillingness to sit down and negotiate with the range of players in the way they want and i think that is problematic as well. i don't think they will recognize that contradiction nor

stevens. this is where we warehouse the collection. it is very secure fireproof vault and i am going to take you in there right now. >> this is what remains at the state library of territorial collection. these were selected from 1853-1857 and many were selected by the governor. if not, he was at least the final word on the selections.

it is very diverse offering of the materials covers many foreign languages. we have things written in german, greek and philosophy, poetry, political papers and presidents up to the date other political thinkers. he was with a well-read individual with multiple language skills and his feeling was the best way to establish legislative body was to to have them be a well-read group by the

standards of that time. and so he collected a lot of these materials from london and new york book sellers. of the original, you know, selection that came around cape horn to olympia there is about 900 titles remaining. a lot of people ask what the oldest item in the collection is that distinction belongs to this: it is 1524. i will butcher the pronounway t

pronounce it. but this is describing the conquest of mexico in good detail. the first letter has been lost to time. this edition is bound with an appendix that describes this. it dates to the 1900, the binding is more modern, but the text is from that era. it was written in 1524. another volume we have that may be interests to people interested in the etchings. this is work done on the dutch east inde company.

this is simon debreeze and he perfe perfected the art. it was published in 168 and c l chalked full of beautiful illustrations. and again, good maps which is another think we have a lot of. we have maps that pertain to the history of the pacific northwest and northwest expansion. in a beautiful binding also. one of the more current, well more current at the times that he purchased the collection, is this book when is patrick gas's journal of the lewis and clarke

expedition. gas was an enlisted man who didn't learn to read or write until he was in his 20s. but because of a death in the core of discovery he was promoted to sergeant and kept this journal. it is actually the first public work on the lewis and clarke expedition for the public consumption. lewis and clarke tried to keep it from being published before their own. and the issue of mary lewis' mental state had a bearing on it. what is nice about this is it is written in a very easy reading style. it is good story telling. so for a lot of people this was the version
