>> there are good biographies of people like robert smalls and they are all on the footnotes and quite often there are dissertations that have been published and is so they are very good they are just kind of flying under the radar but they are not well known. if you go to -- this bookstore website for example robert smalls and you can find books like henry white. certainly the textbooks are getting better in the reconstruction, and again it isn't fair to pick on the textbooks in the 1970s. one doesn't want to know what is in the current textbook because of course it's kind of rewriting your own standards. part of it is popular memory and culture and the last part of the book talks about gone with the wind where they try to write the early 20th century call troll bore and that is kind of a

classic image people have theirs a scene in gone with the wind there is a carpetbagger and a black activist sitting in a carriage and at least they are allowed to kind of your dress with dignity but they are dressed in this outlandish way and what i found interesting as my students have almost never seen gone with the wind but if you ask them what happened in atlanta, they will all tell you that it was burned. not really com really, the waree burned and a few warehouses and of course in the movie because they are building the king kong set in southern california. that's what you are watching for in gone with the wind is king kong's wall and into popular culture they do not go away. there was a tnt film about the assassination of lincoln and the final call that you are watching is he died in a nasty radicals s take over and want to punish the south and this is not the

first of all i think that the sheer number of books people have published is tremendous now and i think that, you know, they have a lot more -- they have a lot more available to them than the authors had before. there are things like kickstart

which is strictly publishing where people can go and raise money on their own to do the things that they really need to do to publish we like to say to publish more. and i think a lot of people now are more of a sort of learned that the more they realize that there are things they can do themselves. i think before that a lot of them were going to the self publishing company whatever company is maybe and they were purchasing a package. i also think there were a lot of traditionally published authors they are still publishing traditionally and they are choosing to self publish on their own. so i think it is a mix but i think just the number comes from the idea that people are starting to learn how to do it right, sending them out quicker and writing them better, finding an audience and now there is a

demand. >> in the beginning we had to reach out to find speakers, to find sponsors. now when they are in that position people are coming to us and saying can we speak we would like to be an exhibitor can we take a table and what would a sponsorship and hail. so the tables have kind of turned because people recognize there are not a lot of shows like this. they certainly do a very nice job and it is a part and with a separate enough timeline one doesn't infringe on the other,

but really other than us and then there are some eerie and there that pop up and better internet only and things like that there isn't really a lot out there. so i think because of that we have benefited year after year after year and i think that's now people sort of look to us as being the show for self-publishing and that's a nice thing and where it's going to go in the future, who knows. >> intelligence reporter for the "washington post." this week john rizzo in his book company man of 3company man of f controversy and crisis in the cia. the man who represent the cia in the iran contra scandal and participated in proving the
