groove because you don't grow. what used to satisfy you, the job or relationship, or the place where you are living or the fact that you are just making money but not doing any social good, those new urgencies when they come in and what happened when the book came out, is a lot of men, but a lot of women changed their life lives. they didn't have to sit in the spot of the good wife. there were other aspects of their life that needed to be put into play to feel howhole. i get the comment i grow up with you so often. i did 4-5 other passage books for men, new passages, silent passage about menopause and
5:21 pm
after writing about caregiving and taking care of a loved one who is not going to turn into an independent person and in my case it was 17 years of taking care of clay with various bouts of cancer and i asked everybody i anyhow and thousands i don't know about their patches and maybe it is time to turn it on myself. i sat down to write this and i didn't know how. i realize this is a whole different genre. it isn't the same as journalism, or non-fiction or research books. it is about real people. i studied with roger who teaches at stony brook south hampton. i studied with him twice. this is like writing a involve except it is about real people and real events and you are the

character and many other characters and you have to separate from yourself and write yourself as a character. was >> was that tough? >> but it was fascinating because it was a new way to express myself. learning something new always turns me on. >> you write in daring that you were a late blooming problem drinker? >> yes, i was. >> might surprise some people. >> because of the takeing care f my husband, not being able to work often, and i began walking from the nursing home and stopping in a sports bar and having 2-3 glasses of wine until i realized i was turning into the alcoholic my mother had been and i was always afraid that could happen.
5:23 pm
so that led me into a 12-step program that is very valuable in my life. >> you don't drink at all today? >> no. happily. >> gale sheehy, as somebody who has been a woman journalist for years, what is your take on the jill jill abraham sichation? >> i think there is sexism here. i don't remember being marched off and denouncing he has has been fired. that doesn't happen often. it is usually for something criminal or alcoholism or something like that.
5:24 pm
and because jill said that there haven't been editors like this before. ann rosenthol was material and i think that jill made an effort. she was tough to work for. she is a tough journalist that is natural. >> was tina brown tough to work for? >> not to me. i loved tina and i had a wonderful time working for her. she started in vanity fair in 1984 and invited me to be her political correspondant.
5:25 pm
she didn't know about american politics but learned quickly. i covered the presidential characters and write long pieces that no longer you can write anymore. we had a wonderful run. and then when she started the daily beast i was one of her first columnnist. we got so comfortable with doing big pieces of world leaders that one time she called me and said i want you to do the pope. and i said i am not catholic. we are going beyond our fold. and she said i would rather do me menopause and i just see her eyes rolling around in her head because she just delivered a baby. she was thinking about the end of fertility but she recognized
5:26 pm
no body ever said that word. this was in 1991. >> so you did that piece, did you ever do the pope? >> no. >> where was this picture taken? >> that was taken in my first apartment in new york that was decent. it was on the upper west side. i was a divorced mom. my 3-year-old daughters looked out on the street instead of a fire escape for the first time. >> quick preview of the book that is coming out in the fall of 2014. you are watching booktv on c-span.
5:27 pm
>> you just saw the coverage of book expo america. the tradeshowed held in new york city. for more on this, visit bo bookexpoamerica.com. >> booktv asked what are you reading this summer? >> walter isaac what is on your summer list? >> the hilary clinton book, tim geithner and i did download pickany's book and i will see how far i can get to it. but for pleasure i am going to go back and reread a couple involves that met a lot to me. especially the movie goer. >> what were you reading this summ summer? tell us what is on your summer reading list? tweet us or post it to our

facebook page or send us n e-mail. >> here is a look at some of the best-selling non fiction books. at the top of the list is thomas picket picketty. "capital" and second is "every i need to know i learned from a little golden book" and best selling authors of freak-nomics are third with think like a freak and then tom robbins book is second. and "flash boys" by michael

make sure you silencers cell phones, anything else that does is spirit order food and drinks throughout and make sure you show your great appreciation to the wait staff who work very hard here. know that he scheduled this evening are going to have a talk by dave zirin, q&a and then a book signing here. we do have another event afterwards, said the book signing will need to go fairly quickly. that means it on point between now and the book signing coming you should go and buy not just one book, not two, not very, but
5:32 pm
enough for you from your friends and family. at some point between now and the book signing. because teaching for changes in educational organization, i have a short quiz before you get started. let's see how we do on our quiz. do you want the next generation to learn the dances of this country were made by eight, worse than president or beat, but the role of everyday people, teachers, as late, everybody. question number two. question number two, do you want children? who do you want to see themselves in children's books? just white middle-class children from heterosexual families for all children? [cheers and applause]
5:33 pm
okay, so now you know why teaching for change operates the bookstore here. we spend a lot of time trying to find them feature the books that do what you ask for because these are not the books and i think we need more sound here. these are not the books that are being published currently. in fact, only one out of 10 books being published currently are about people of color. these are also not the books on the bestsellers list. in fact one of the books on the bestseller book for children reneau is by rush limbaugh. you will not find that book in our bookstore. it's also getting lots of awards. to flip the trend, flip the script, 90% of the books we sell in the bookstore here are by or about people of color. those are the books we find them feature and recruit there is a
5:34 pm
market for them. this includes a big young adult titles like the giancarlo story by dave zirin. [cheers and applause] in fact, every time they come out, they become runaway bestsellers to greater bookstore and the goal is to make sure "brazil's dance with the devil" does the same thing. they are going to help us with that. but we also need your help to continue operation of the new bookstore. we don't want to have to leave and afterwards tell us we didn't know. we are not breaking even and we can take consumer programs that promote people's history. so please make sure you and your friend purchase next door and consider making a donation.
