that election because i didn't think we had a strong candidate. i mean, if i'd lived there, i might have worked for one for to ter, but it just -- or the other, but it just didn't seem worth expending one ounce of my energy unless we're going to win. and that's how i look at races. if you're going to challenge a republican -- i wrote a column about this. number one, i don't even want to hear about it unless he voted against amnesty. again, what matters? obamacare, amnesty. all republicans are against obamacare, that only leaves amnesty. so, first, i am not interested, i'm out unless you can tell me he voted against amnesty, and second, you better have somebody pretty good, and, third, make sure it's in a race where we're not going to lose the seat altogether. >> well, thank you very much, ann, for coming. >> thank you. [applause] oh, one more thing, um, if you don't mind my saying, i'm going to be signing. we have some books out there, and there's one sort of crazy things you won't have seen before, these ann coulter

dvds. we're down to the last ones. some liberal friends of mine made it because they told me, who was it, they were doing some boring liberal politician, they said he's boring, can we do you. it's won awards, i haven't seen it because i don't like watching myself. but it is now on sale because i don't want to carry them back on the plane from $30 to $20. so, please, buy them so i don't have to carry them on the plane. [laughter] thank you. [applause] >> you're watching booktv. television for serious readers. you can watch any program you see here online at booktv.org. >> booktv asked, what are you reading this summer? >> well, i've got kind of an extensive list that i'm working on. one is one of my old favorites. anything that the author mark steyn writes is great with me. it's steyn, his web site is
4:54 pm
steynonline.com. he's a fabulous author. in fact, i enjoyed his book, it's called "after america." i enjoyed his book so much that i'm not kidding, where is it? where's my green thing? right over there, okay. so what i did, i took steyn's book, and this is my little journal of things that i find are important i write it down, and i actually summarized steyn's book. the facts are so salient, the arguments are so good, and what i find is that it's just important to reread books that are classics or very good, and his arguments are wonderful. so mark steyn, "after america," written in 2011. and, again, it's so good that i took notes on the entire book, and i quote him all the time. that's number one. another book that i'm reading is called "mother of the groom." for the very first time, we're having a child that is getting
4:55 pm
married on june 15th. this is a very big deal. i'm a foster mom to 23 great kids, and then we had five biological children, and our oldest son picked a beautiful girl that he is going to marry june 15th. and it's very different when you're mother of the groom versus mother of the bride. and i am determined to be the world's best mother-in-law, that's my goal. and so i want to make sure that we get this right. and so to get off to a good fitting -- footing, i'm trying to take some tips of being mother of the groom. so whether it is what dress do i buy, how do we deal with expenses, how do i help support and assist our daughter-in-law and not detract in any way, i just want to make sure that i get it right. so i'm reading "mother of the groom." and that wedding's coming up early, so i'm quick into this book now to make sure i do everything right. the other book that i'm reading, i was with this author yesterday. her name is caroline glick. she's a good friend but also a good author.
4:56 pm
this book is called "the israeli solution." it's really about the peace process between israel and the palestinians. and the thesis of her book is what we've been doing for the last decades hasn't worked. it's blown up in our faces time and time again with the two-state solution, and she's saying maybe we should think out of the box, and maybe we should consider another way to deal with this very important issue. and so we actually started a new caucus here in congress, and it's called the israeli solution. and it's saying what other ideas are there out there other than the current two-state process? is there something else that might work? and we're constantly told that we need to think outside of the box, and that's what we want to do. is we had caroline glick in yesterday. hers is just one idea. there's other ideas on how we should deal with this issue. and so anyway, it's the israeli solution caucus, but her book title is "the israeli solution."

the last book i'm looking at right now of reading is the new book by lynne cheney. the wife of the former vice president, she's a very accomplished woman in her own right. she's extremely bright. he's been involved for years and years and years in academic excellence in america's public schools, and she wrote a biography of one of the unsung heroes of our founding, and that would be one of our early presidents, james madison. and she's written a brilliant book, and i'm looking forward to reading it. i was honored to be able to go to margaret thatcher, the former prime minister's funeral when she passed away recently. margaret thatcher was one of the most consequential women in politics. when i was at the airport lounge in london, the vice president, cheney and lynne cheney, were in the airport lounge, and i went over and spoke a little bit with mrs. cheney and asked her what she was working on, and she said she was putting together this book on james madison's life. she was fascinated, and she

herself is a fascinating person. and she was talking a little bit to me about james madison and why she found him such a compelling character. and she highly motivated me to be able to pick up her book and look at it. so this summer i'm looking at it. and one of my favorite genres for reading, i'm a big, big reader, i always have a book that i'm reading, and one of my favorite genres is biography. it's the best way to learn history. i love david mccullough's book on john adams, on truman, on various subjects. it's excellent, and i have no doubt that this book by james madison will be more of the same. i just, the last book i just finished reading was one dealing with the history of american hare rests a lit -- herr'ss a little over -- heirs. it's a takeoff on downton abbey.

it was true, and it was a historical version of how this whole process worked. and it was absolutely a fascinating, fascinating book. so i like to read a wide variety of books on a wide variety of subjects. my daughter also just gave me another book that i'm reading, and it's called "100 addresses." it was from the metropolitan museum of art, and it was on the 100 most beautiful dresses that have been designed by various designers in the last 100 years. or i guess, actually, more than that, more than a hundred years. but there's an yves st. laurent dress from 1955 that i love that i'd love to have copied. so i love a wide variety not just political, i like a lot of different things, but my to be book i'm recommending is mark steyn's book that i'm recommending -- well, for myself i'm reading this one on "mother of the groom." then the next book i'm recommending is "israeli

solution" by caroline glick, then lynne cheney's book on the life of james madison. and, again, you can't go wrong with some light reading as well. to that's what i'm reading this summer. >> what are you reading this summer? tell us what's on your summer reading list. tweet us, @booktv, post it to our facebook page or send us an e-mail be, booktv@cspan.org. all week watch booktv in prime time. monday at 8:30 p.m. eastern and tuesday through friday at 8, booktv features a wide range of topics including foreign policy, law and legal issues, iran, coverage of book fairs and festivals from across the country and bestsellers from this year. and let us know what you think about the programs you're watching. call us at 202-626-3400, or you can e-mail us at comments@c-span.org. join the c-span conversation. like us on facebook, follow be us on twitter. ..
