and only by standing up during times of crisis for the u.s. constitution can we make the documents served the end to which it was intended. >> host: talking with lane hirabayashi professor of asian american studies at ucla and the co-author of this book along with his uncle. >> and my dad. >> "a principled stand" the story of hirabayashi v. united states". >> make you very much.
1:32 am
>> no i'm booktv we will introduce you to ucla professor otto santa ana what do you teach here? >> department of chicano studies. >> host: what courses are you teaching? >> language did in the media, language in the classroom provide teaching of class on political humor and all aspects of language sitter's socially relevant. >> your book is named "juan in a hundred" the representation of latinos n network news." here is the cover but what
1:33 am
does the word latino mean? >> guest: all the people who are of latin american origen now citizens of the united states. >> host: as professor of chicano studies what does that mean? >> mexican-american descent another way to say mexican-americans. >> host: what is the latino population today in the united states? >> guest: 52 million a huge portion of society. >> host: your book is about representation on network news how many stories are about latinos? >> sad to leave less than 1% of all news stories on the evening news have to do with latinos.
1:34 am
why? >> because they're not considered by the media to be part of the social fabric of the united states. i looked at 12,000 news stories when fully year of abc and cbs and nbc in the cnn i counted all stories in the evening news 365 days. there over 12,000 stories between 98 and 115 were about what he knows. that is why i called it "juan in a hundred". >> host: when you see a latino store what does that mean? >> immigration, and looking
1:35 am
at the presidential election campaign at the time. and looking at all the stories possible to look at the salvadorean of how the baseballs were stitched. which tried to be inclusive as possible we had of very narrow focus and a narrow scope we do not characterize latinos adequately. >> it was in a skewed manner very good stories but a lot of stories that indicated a relatively impoverished
1:36 am
understanding of what what he knows are. i that were not met. looking frame by frame with 48 news stories to make sure like it understood what is articulated. looking at a news stories and how well it was covered the story of the day. in 1/6 of the population but
1:37 am
26 shots abc story on gonzales in san peter jennings the noses of nominee and president bush nominated a hispanic texans who for the attorney general. >> you caught me off-guard i am not sure if i recall what the issue was. >> his confirmation is almost certain although there will be some questions with the nomination as affirmative action appointment alternating shots to the president and on salas spirit this is the
1:38 am
attorney general who was confirmed and served as well as he could with his background he was a preview court justice in texas and served admirably in the framing of the network news cast him as filling in slot as affirmative action hispanic but he was chosen. >> how low could that have been framed differently? been made to chuck but his credentials were with his philosophy was put their
1:39 am
greatest since of the integration of that candidates into government but filling in that affirmative-action position and nothing about that background was discussed. @> host: you go on to say >> host: you go on to say when gas solace is seen making remarks abc reenforce the framing to choose images that present him echoed the president's characterization and that he grew up for stomach the was an important part but there was nothing about of the national scene it was very appropriate to
1:40 am
talk about the american dream but more about the reasons but not strictly the politics but to giving an example but to have one obituary a famous person's pass away each day. ronald reagan passed away there were stories of his obituary. >> how many were represented ? not one person in federal court judges there were pioneers in politics and the
1:41 am
sciences that one of those individuals characterized that is the blinding erasure of 1/6 of the population. >> recently passed away so certainly tremendous coverage and other pests away she was not characterized she was a poet to talk about the borderland
1:42 am
that follows her politically. and does not characterized whatsoever. and we had no knowledge of that. the to understand what nature is about. that these individuals have lived lives then passed away it is not that they can find these people but i give them three hours to find and newsworthy stories that have not been covered iq them three hours the was
1:43 am
available during that period of time. more over there were cases when the network news skewed the story. but the wall street journal's spoke about with the economic news and said that working-class latinos andrew the very detailed study construction workers working in the midwest doing heavy construction that nobody else would do. with that marvelous "wall
1:44 am
street journal" article. in to be adjusted that they were middle-class jobs and it was alarming. but it is part of the "wall street journal" to sound the alarmist for the american public to hear. >> did your books "juan in a hundred" starting with a quotation every shortcoming of governance this is part
1:45 am
of the knowledge deficit spending a queer 16 of the population again we were not represented 50 million people and what we see is that most of the stories haven't would go for. with the democratic candidates. but any other aspect but dealing with those latinos only one news story us we mentioned only one about
1:46 am
hispanic health with very limited coverage and all those areas that were generally covered clearly news was being made but not considered newsworthy. the beltway news story constituted the major timing that was important in simply was when politics converged with hispanic issues. actually with a catastrophe there was a terrible hurricane that occurred in people died in cuba imported rico and that was covered and those were the stories of 2004. nothing about being represented throughout
1:47 am
america or a deeper understanding beyond the characterization's that we operate with today. i am afraid that it is a continuation of the stereotypes and mythologies that are characterized. i feel there is no lack of serious knowledge of latinos and apart from that journalists tend not to pay attention but worry about objectivity and fairness but that criteria should not be the major criteria for network news. they should understand they're telling stories and repetitive stories with the mythological background.
1:48 am
so the major news story the most covered in 2004 as it is today latinos had to do with immigration a book that everyone constituting one-third. if the protagonist was a border patrol agent what type of story to you think? the story was a western john drug story the brave and anglo male defending the frontier on the american desert against renegade comanche's the mexicans and 10 issues. he was militarized the
1:49 am
simply have the same story. and to maintain a civilization it even in the 15th frame shot you would know this story just by introduction. out what was characterized. their protagonist name change. and was affiliated with network news. in with the character as
1:50 am
well as immigrants with individuals. and so to risk their lives across the desert and then to keep people that came across in this day notice seconds you have 90 seconds the bbc correspondent a much better job than american correspondents to link the very same story. >> greasy repetitions of the stereotypes and mythological stories to characterize what is going on in the problem is the american public does not become familiar with what immigration is.
1:51 am
it is not the only story to be covered but it should be in a more profound way. was globalization never characterized as a major factor? no. was population? very limited only the cowboys story. >> host: professor otto santa ana what is a latino story would like to see covered that you have not. >> and obituary. if the network news decided they would present a proportionate number of obituaries to characterize our diversity a population of would be interesting in this simple change to remake
1:52 am
the way they are reconsidered their mentioned as characters or immigrants there the cardboard cutout of john wayne that we defend america against uc latinos as americans and the network news representation even today. the 15 and 20 years ago has not changed for the network news there is a change of coverage now there is c-span so viewers can go elsewhere but the network news has not changed their presentation style for a generation and those latinos have now become 50 million people and
1:53 am
they are not represented anywhere as much as they should be. is a failure i am afraid of network news casting that does not allow the public in general to know who of latinos are. so it promotes stereotypes and l level of ignorance. and we cannot deal in the 21st century of misrepresentations of our population in society. >> host: is it different here is a los angeles because of the large latino population do you find it different watching local news? >> guest: i was speaking about network news but local news is different. but mostly it is the spanish
1:54 am
language. spanish language television news have been extraordinarily different take on latinos. so what we really see is is but he knows straw from the two language sources because it is in the efficient. you see this stereotypes or find them insufficient. immigration is covered entirely differently. the only thing that looks similar is the sports but
1:55 am
but we constitute a major portion of across the country from south carolina and south dakota as well as arizona and california. we should not be considered to be regional. >> host: just to reiterate , your book just came out in 2013 some of the tables are five and six and 20 years old. has it changed? >> each year i do a survey to see the students in my class is have changed the
1:56 am
networks themselves have not changed. >> host: here is the cover of the book. "juan in a hundred" the representation of latinos n network news" otto santa ana is the author. . .
