in retrospect it was a brilliant strategic move so i am not surprised about what happened in iraq. i was for going into afghanistan, bringing down the taliban, the cia with special forces together did a brilliant job. by my standards some were young men, in afghanistan dealing with the same people we dealt with -- a lot of the principles are the same people. i am for getting out after that and keeping special forces and cia below the radar. i think nation-building in afghanistan, i watched the russians. the russians didn't just go there and put an autocratic hand on it. they built schools and highways. you can't hold it together in a tribal society. i am not very optimistic. i think this morning waking up, this is one of the biggest developments, the speed with which it is happening, we are
10:53 am
now looking at a virtual partition of iraq. we might end up being happy if we get a partition. it is a very sad day for all of us. i worry about afghanistan, that it will revert back. i know dealing with the pakistan can be problematic at times, but we need them. if we do not have a relationship with the pakistani said they have a huge internal problem where our hopes of having a residual influence is going to disappear after we leave. i caught the publisher -- once it goes to print it is hard to get it stopped. if you take a word out you have to put one in, has to have the same number of letters.

that is tricky. vladimir putin, the government had fallen in ukraine and vladimir putin started his covert action program. it is literally out of the textbook of 48 and chile. not that we invented it, it is traditional covert -- plausible denial in bodies leaving, doesn't mean believable, but a lot of the world looks at the russians, tanks are crossing today, they are not really tanks, they are trucks. i said this is what he is going to do. he is going to maximize his influence. crimea, we were not going to get it back and it is a political fight, psychological battle and we are going to have to up the ante on sanctions and we are going to have to provide huge financial support. i hope they are calling the cia to do a lot of covert action.
10:55 am
i guarantee you there's not a doubt in my mind that he has a huge covert action program. this is very much in vogue. on iraq we had a discussion i better not nailed a year too closely, it was one of the top people, the seventh floor of langley and i said when we leave it is going to fall apart. this is a time when you have it, several years ago, to put plumbing in and i am hopeful we did but i never ever felt that this wasn't going to end anything better than bad news. there was a 2010 op-ed in the wall street journal called the cia solution. it says we are leaving and we better have the infrastructure. i hope i haven't minced words

near future on booktv and booktv.org. >> the key thing is if you suddenly find oil in a country where there is really no form of democracy, like editorial guinea where it gained independence -- was the colony of spain into the 60s, 1968, they gained independence and this literally -- a complete lunatic takes power, terrorizes the country and the 11 years later his nephew executes them. and has held power ever since. there is no tradition of democracy so in that environment when the government gets its hands on that sort of oil well is almost inevitable that it leads to corruption and very little improvement for people. so in nigeria for example, nigeria oil firms have been
10:59 am
pumping oil for nearly half a century now, the country is certainly worse off, not better off. i remember working with a former cia officials who traveled to nigeria. he wasn't station there, work for the office, it was the office of transnational and you went to nigeria and said he concluded on the basis of conversations with people the country would be better off if they had never discovered oil. in a lot of places, which i note in the book, former vice president chaney once noted god since see fit to put oil only in democratic countries friendly to the united states. and when the oil is found in kazakhstan or equity real getty or chad or cameron it won't do the people a lot of good. >> you can watch this and other programs online at booktv.org.
