the word had gotten out that any greek caught hiding the gmac would be executed on the spot. instead of preparing, the bishop and the mayor went to the jewish committee on the island and they sent him into hiding in the mounds or with christian friends in the countryside. they returned to the german military commander and present him with a sheet of paper the list that the german military commander was asking for. theythere were just two names on that piece of paper. the bishop and the premier. they told the commander that it was the entire jewish community. it was the spirit that was behind both of those acts i'm at it is that precise spirit that has encouraged me to answer what i consider the greatest moral calling of our time the defense
