pretty cool. we were talking about the creative process. for television, we may have to change a little bit. what if we do this? what if we do that? finally i said excuse me you are rob reiner i'm okay with whatever you want to do. you figure what to do this but for television. some having conversation. the "washington post" book review several weeks ago gave it a favorable review. i was very gratified be in the same review. carl hyacinth was one of the great thrills for me. i hesitate to say this an independent bookstore because my loyalties are to independent bookstores. but i will tell you there is a fairly popular, without mentioning names, there's an online seller that ranks sales in several weeks ago -- several days ago i learned that we were
11:50 am
listed as the best-selling book, category humor subcategory the law and the ports. sub subcategory that members of congress who are jewish and live on an island. thank you all very much. i appreciate your interest in the book. [applause] >> tolerate. should we take your questions? been a good evening. thank you for being here. in the article this morning there was a reference to your father speaking about dick cheney. could you tell us a little bit about that? i know you can't tell everything. >> not without a therapist with me. the question was the dedication. i dedicated to dick cheney and my father who didn't care for the men. that dedication. my dad was just a hard-core democrat. a lasting two years ago to lung
11:51 am
cancer and we lost him in august before the election, the presidential election. until literally his dying day he would say i am going to stay alive to know that barack obama got back in. literally he said that. i will keep going until president obama was reelected. is hard-core. to the consternation of some year contentment of others have been to right on national security issues i was a frequent guest on fox. i'm telling you whenever i go on fox or more within a minute after leaving camera, i would get angry enough for my father. why do you go on that channel? even other stations, i didn't raise you to be a conservative. dad, i'm just talking about the importance of electing democrats. no commie should've been stronger stronger. so that was my dad.
11:52 am
my mom still lives in phoenix arizona. my dad in 2008 because they live in a very conservative retirement community. phoenix, retirement and the conservative. my dad would walk around with this cat. in 2004 it said don't lash and he would call me and sat had a great day. like for people try to fight me today. unlike god that's not a great day. that's a dangerous day. don't do that. in 2080 would cause they do say do you know what is happening instead of giving me the finger they want to shake my hand. something is happening in this country. so that was my dad. i was talking to my mom tonight. i was telling her i was coming here, which is widely coming here, been on the phone with my jewish mom. she said you know, dad is just chuckling up there. he is chuckling up there about the book.
11:53 am
serve. >> as i recall since you mentioned levittown committees that were built craft coming to create your hippie town is from? >> it could be. it is where bill o'reilly grew up. we have quite a few celebrities coming out. i went to a high school in a community that years before i went to the high school, there is actually parties in my community. i believe the board of education might've considered senator joseph mccarthy high school but decided it was cheaper to do douglas macarthur. >> hi, i was wondering what the news stories and actual people, how many lawyers to do in your publisher have? >> for me say this. if i'm ever missing for more than her days, dick cheney. it is a wonderful question.
11:54 am
so the publisher, simon & schuster assigned a lawyer to those who read every word. most of the lawyer's concerns were the typical concerns that any author would have or lawyer would have with an author in terms of place as, any kind of protecting the publisher and me for many lawsuits. there were several occasions where you can talk about this. since there's nothing in this book that in any way shape or form comes remotely close to anything i heard they shouldn't report, there's no problem. dick cheney is a public figure. i'm a public figure. washington has to learn because the rest of the country laughs at us but there were no issues with respect to lawyers in the briefings and meetings that i went to.
11:55 am
we have a very rigorous ethics process in the house of representatives. so those lawyers, that was different against members of congress are an accepted permitted to accept to ensure we are not violating any of the house ethics rules not a separate legal process that was very long and that they should be, very detailed. >> i am also jewish from new york on the saws off on the phone with my mother. >> i'm sure mothers know each other. >> stand. coffee westchester. >> horrible people. >> my question is with the new administration have you noticed large-scale changes with the programs because of that? or is that much more transparent? aroma hearing the news wrong.
11:56 am
>> with the exception of the issue of guantánamo i haven't noticed large-scale approach like surveillance. there is a book by president obama. i couldn't describe it to president obama because he wasn't president in 2004. there is a scene in the book were scooter libby and cheney -- let me read it to you. the quote is from president obama. i was at a meeting, an event with him, where he said as and i wrote it down. this is after he learns all about nick. blue along with so. what is to stop this from spying on americans. we take privacy rights very seriously. we have checks and balance is safeguards. this government is not spy on the american people. president obama said that. he said it a few months ago
11:57 am
responding to a question about the nsa. other questions? comments? criticisms? very good. >> you've got another book in the works? >> i do. so before i finish the contract or before i submitted my final manuscript to her i had another idea for a book which simon & schuster has accepted. it's not. it's now going through the process. there's no contract until the ethics committee says there is. the second novel is a parody of washington d.c. tentatively titled big guns. it is the gun debate and ss in two places.
11:58 am
the first premise is that a very comes server to house of representatives and the u.s. senate with the republican majority passes a law that mandates that every american under the logical primus that if obamacare with health insurance if you require to have health insurance company should be required to have life insurance. and that is a gun. so is the debate inside the congress -- in fact, that is part of the debate because there's an amendment that allows for presidential waivers of the gun ownership requirement for children under the age of seven and people in the do not fly list. you'd be surprised what happens to that debate. once you say children under seven should be required to
11:59 am
five, four, three. before you know it -- before you know it, no one will be required to own a gun. you've got this congress and washington that the president will sign requiring every american must own a gun. meanwhile, in a small town you have a very liberal progressive mayor, this tiny very luxurious elegant town near the hamptons where you have the mayor passing a local ordinance that bans all guns from within her village. and so, it is the interplay between the small town mayor who wants all guns beyond in this national after to require that all americans must own a gun of about 40000 words into it. like the global war on maurice, it is all written on this.
12:00 pm
every word is written on this because the nature of my life in my service in congress doesn't allow me to find time in front of a computer to write. so i have an idea and start writing it. here's something or see something right on this. my staff thinks i'm the most unfriendly boss they could work for because whenever i'm with them, and cars planes, trains are actually was onto planes and a train trying to get down the unsparing and day. all i'm doing is picking at this. so i apologize to my staff. but now they know what i was doing. i wasn't writing mean things about them. if the ethics committee approves the contract,. serve. >> the question was do we have subsidies? cs tax credits for poor people who can't afford a gun. tax
