are. isis is a very significant threat to the stability of the middle east. that is why we are doing what we are doing. they're a moderate terrorist threat to us today. al qaeda actually in yemen and another al qaeda group in syria and al qaeda impact and al qaeda impactor still a greater threat to us. given enough time and iraq in the area, isis will pose the kind of threat that we are now wonder. >> thank you director morell. please give both a round of applause. [inaudible conversations] >> while one, he wanted to stay there every home in. he always wanted you at the other end of the line. i was only there a week or so. i had an office down the hall. it was a large office because we has to have all these meetings to plan the programs. he called one morning about 8:00 and my secretary lyndon

johnson as we had a wine called the potus line. it just rang. it didn't ring internet lay. they rang until someone answered it. and you could never pick it up fast enough. it always made you feel -- she answered the phone and he said where is he? he's in the bathroom mr. president. isn't there a photo there? she said no. he said put a phone in there. so i came out and she said the president wants a phone in the bathroom. i said forget about it. the next morning for my same time i am in the same place disable call. and he shouts at peggy. as i told you to put a phone in there. and she said yes, mr. president. by the time i got out of the

bathroom there were two army signal guys in my office on the phone was installed. that was when they wanted you all the time. in second life, he thought things, always a way to do something when we needed some help. none of my kids -- i was in sibley hospital in virginia and washington. my son joe had swallowed a bottle of aspirin. the president called i just ran. i did leave a phone number. he finally get me at the hospital and says what are you doing there? my son swallowed a bottle of aspirin. and he is two years old. he said that it's terrible. he said we should make these

people have bottles to little kids can open them. and that is why most of us in this room have trouble opening. it is called the child safety act. elementary and secondary education. for years we've been on the democratic platform and secondary education. couldn't get it. the problem was that catholics were able to block it to parochial schools and the evangelicals and the urban secular jewish were able to block it if it did provide parochial schools and they could make any progress. johnson was working on it and it got more complicated with the civil rights act of 64 because now we got this chart that

there's going to be more money for blacks. the congressman was chairman of the house education committee. president johnson finally says adam, you've got to leave town and it got turned turn this over to somebody else. some of you may remember that is when adam powell went through bimini. he never quite got back. he said he wanted you congressman from brooklyn to try and put the bill together. kerry was in a district in brooklyn that had orthodox jews the fact that johnson knew that was incredible. kerry came out of the idea of leasing books canales and secular books and equipment to

parochial schools. johnson started selling it. there's a wonderful meeting with cardinal spellman from new york, billy graham and arthur gold were standing beside the white house pool and their close. that is the hottest room in god there is. and johnson is working on them. and it was so hot in there that you can do that are/through cardinal spellman. he worked on it and worked on it and finally agreed. it was fantastic. he got the bill passed and then he said hold the bill up. if you get ability don't sign it within 10 days as a pocket veto. hold the bill for a month. mccormack said why and johnson

said because i want to sign it on kerry's birthday. we wouldn't have this ill without him. and he did. that kind of thing. >> how did he know so much about so many people? i'm told he had the phone number and the name of every member of congress on his desk in the oval office with little notes about what they might need or might want. how did he assemble all of this? where did he get all this information? >> he accumulated it. it is absolutely stunning and it was invaluable to him. he loved politicians. he spent time with them. he knew when their wives were set, when their kids were sick or when they had a problem or didn't. and he knew what would move them. it wasn't always hugs and kisses and for that day.

we lost -- we needed to raise the debt limit one and then the corset. net we lost six liberal democrats voted against raising the debt limit. we had this meeting and johnson used to have these long she and everybody's name. we were going through them and one of them from westchester county, very lovely county in new york said the war was taking money away from the people who needed it people who needed housing. johnson says joe tell him we are going to put the biggest public housing project in the

history of this country in the middle of his fancy westchester district. i did and we did get the vote.
