10:56 pm
that's kind of our motto in a lot of ways. we do new stuff, and we think of our company as being sort of the whole gamut of life. >> host: is it advantageous to be based in boston? >> guest: i think it's advantageous. i think it's a life that's more conducive to books, solitude, to editing, and we kind of have our finger on the pulse be of boston intellectual elites. and that's a good thing. >> host: well, tell us about some of the books you have coming out this fall, lissa warren. >> guest: we have a book coming out, he's a favorite of ours, it's our seventh or eighth book. it's a biography of henry clay, and he was a kentucky lawyer who changed american politics forever. it is subtitled "america's greatest statesman," and harlow makes it clear that that really is what he was, and i can't think of a time in our country's history when we have more sorely needed that, so perhaps there's
10:57 pm
something to be learned from good old henry clay. >> host: what else? >> guest: we have winston churchill reporting, and it's been a young author named simon reid, and it is a fascinating look at the years that churchill spent as a foreign war pop correspondent. most people don't even know that he did that. he was in the sudan, he was in cuba. he was putting himself in harm's way. so later on when he went to send troops into battle, he kind of had more of a feeling for what that is all about than most people gave him credit for, because he was a war journalist. >> host: kind of tough to come up with new aspects or new stuff on winston churchill. >> guest: it is for churchill. and interestingly enough, it is also tough to come up with new ways of looking at presidents, including george washington. but we have another author who's done that incredibly effectively for us in a book called "first entrepreneur." and it's about how george washington took what he learned managing his mount vernon estate, good practices like
10:58 pm
transparency and being willing to take risks, calculated risks, and how he applied those skills that he learned managing mount vernon to being the president of the united states. he ran our country like a business, and he was our first president, but he was also one of the only presidents that has really run this country like a business. >> host: lissa warren, as a pr person for books, when you put winston churchill or george washington or abraham lincoln, does that at least get people to stop? >> guest: oh, it does. it absolutely does. gets people like you to stop, but it also is attention-grabbing for magazines and for readers who have shelves that are full of presidential biographies or books that politicians that have changed our country forever. we're very, very proud of our history list. we do current events too and current politics and things like that, but we really, really enjoy doing the history, and we have this amazing executive editor, bob pigeon, who does all

of them for us. >> host: now, you have a second life as a poet. >> guest: i do. >> host: if people are interested -- first of all, what kind of poetry do you write, and if people are interested, where can they find it? >> guest: i tend to do free verse, and you can google lissa warren and type the word poetry after it, and stuff will pop up. i do have an msa in poetry, and interestingly, a lot of people who work in publishing are writers on the side. they have secret lives as writers. and i just had a book come out too. so i know what it's like to be an author and how to work well with your publicist. i was on the other side of it for a change. >> booktv is on twitter. follow us to get publishing news, scheduling updates, author information and to talk directly with authors during our live programs. twitter.com/booktv. >> sunday, september 6th, booktv is live with lynne cheney, the former second lady and senior fellow at the
