[laughter] and she said that. he said put a phone in there. so i came out, and peggy, and she said the president wanted for and about. i said forget about it. we forgot about it. the next morning same time i'm in the same place, the same call come and he shouts at peggy. he said, i told you to put a phone in there. and she said, yes, mr. president by the time i got out of the bathroom they were to army signal corps guys standing in my office, and the phone was installed. that was whe what he wanted youl the time. i mean, i just come and secondly, he saw, he saw things always a way to do something we did a lot of needed some help.

one of my kids, i was in hospital in virginia and washington, my son joe had swallowed a bottle of aspirin and the president called and, of course, you, i just ran. i didn't leave a phone number. and, finally, he gives me at the hospital and he said what are you doing of what the hell are you doing there? i said, well, my son swallowed a bottle of aspirin. he's two years old. he said, that's terrible. table. you know, we shouldn't have, we should make these people have these bottles so the little kids can't open them. and that's why most of us in this room have trouble opening our medicine. [laughter] and he said, he wanted a congressman from brooklyn to try to put the deal together. kerry was in a district in brooklyn that orthodox jews, roman catholics, this over if -- an incredible clinton area. the fact that johnson is that was incredible. kerry came up with the idea of leasing books to parochial schools. johnson started selling it. there's a wonderful meeting with cardinal spellman from new york, billy graham, and arthur goldberg stand astride the white house pool. they were in their clothes. that is the hottest room on god's earth, the hottest new.

and johnson, and is working on it. in the background i think is do more in me i have in my office because he was so hot into a you could see the sweat through the cardinals -- he worked on and work on any font agreed, contested the he got the bill passed and then he said to john mccormick of the speaker of the house, he said hold the bill. is a good ability to and you don't sign it within 10 days, it's a pocket veto. hold the bill for a month. and mccormack said why? and johnson said, because i want to signed it on kerry's birthday. we wouldn't have this bill without them, and he decided on kerry's birthday. that kind of thing. >> how did you know so much about so many people? i'm told that he had the phone number and the name of every member of congress on his desk in the oval office with little

everybody's name into account those go for or against, and decided. we have the six congressmen and we're ing through, and one of them from westchester county, a very lovely county in new york, said simply the war was taking money away from people who need it. people need housing. and, for housing. and johnson says, joe, call him up. you tell him we are going to put the biggest damn public housing project in the history of this country in the middle of his fancy westchester district.
