1:27 pm
to see people get involved with grass-roots activism it is up to the citizens to play a role for what decisions they are making and they understand they work for us. that is why it is so important to recognize to have a voice. >> when you saw what happened in baltimore what would you like to have seen? period that was heartbreaking. citizens burning down their own neighborhoods. i also find a lot of the decision making came from the mayor and the local establishments and the government's you didn't have a handle on the situation.
1:28 pm
that turned into citizens being pitted against the police. that situation should not have happened and it was a local issue held that local level unfortunately we had outside influence they completed the - - completed the situation to make it worse. >> have you experienced racism? >> to tell you the truth i don't think so i am sitting here on a national network i didn't take it personally i look for another opportunity for me to say have i ever been racially i cannot say i

want children to be empowered with education so they can think for themselves and be well educated but they have policies in place when it comes to education people obeyed to recognize what is going on in their community. >> our charter schools popular and african-american households? >> i am a former member of a board member several years ago. the children i met and interacted with new where they came from in a public school with no control, kids were not accountable, the teachers were not accountable to where they
1:31 pm
feel like they are looked after and they have an opportunity and there is hope for them. charter schools are huge. unfortunately there is a cap is a new your guard what is available and the parents have come out in droves to demand more opportunities for their children. because they know the dynamics from the public schools that are feeling kids and their children to the opportunities are limited in charter schools because there are not deep enough seats. they have lotteries if the name or number is called so they can have a hopeful future to have a quality education. it is a shame that is not front and center to people that understand and recognize the importance of a quality education. . .
1:32 pm
because they want to know what they can do to play a role and people are being active and is a wonderful thing to see. >> host: out of that 200 how many were black? >> guest: there was me, that was it. there are situations where there may not be any black individuals a there. on the other hand, you know why?

because they go to the churches, the black churches know we are having a forum, you are invited, you are welcome, we are talking about education, energy, empowerment, you are welcome, and is unfortunate when they don't show up but i have taken the message to chicago, taken the message here to las vegas at the end of the annual convention last year, people are open-minded, they will hear what we have to say and how they can play a role and get involved. win government is involved in our everyday lives that seems to be a trigger for a lot of people to stand up and have the police, take a stand and try to do something. >> host: from your book, the naacp has put aside the pretext that it is a civil rights organization and has exposed its

real agenda as a left-wing promoter of all things progressive. >> another organization, the leaders don't support choice and why would you take that opportunity away from disadvantaged children, they don't support black conservatives. i have sent them letters, tried to speak at their annual convention. my questions are ignored by the leaders of the naacp. they don't want my message to her meet in the black community, my message of social or responsibility and limited government. and their myth that blacks are victims who need special treatment and that is what i heard throughout the naacp convention last year which is in las vegas. that was the message i heard, whether it was a breakout session or the big auditorium where they had different speaker is coming in, it was mind blowing but what was very concerning is a lot of young
1:35 pm
college students were there reading the next generation of the same mindset which i found disturbing. >> with your reception hostile, cordial? >> there was one incident where i was on the main floor in the exhibit hall and the woman came up to me and had her finger in my face and told me i shouldn't be there because of my views and was yelling and cursing and it made national television, she is one of many who think and feel that way. i stood up to her in answer to her question, she's entitled to her opinion. >> host: what is your relationship with jeff immelt? >> guest: he knows who we are, myself and my husband, we have gone to numerous shareholder meetings, and ask a question of the ceos, he wants the boots of

government on the industry of energy so they can sell their renewable energy products. they are hiding behind big government where this is a profitable publicly traded company, they want the government, corporate isn't to help with the bottom line. that is our tax dollars being used to influence the's bottom-line and that is wrong. >> host: corporate cronyism. >> guest: anytime government is involved in big business and pollution that is the red flag for americans to recognize. >> host: who is tom burrell a? >> guest: my other half, my husband and we are known at different shareholder meeting this. and it is another way for people to be empowered. why are we making these decisions or choice is that are not in the best interests of

shareholders. they don't like to be put on the spot like that especially if the board and the shareholders. >> host: where did you and tom meet? >> we met at work. we met in manhattan a number of years ago, we have the same mindset, all about liberty and freedom and we think it is important to educate individuals and get people fired up, get them involved and what they can do. we have been able to make a lot of noise and gain a lot of traction, we have a huge social media following on twitter and facebook and people recognize us from walking the floors at this event which is great. >> host: here at freedomworks are you seeing black american faces? >> guest: oh yes. i know a number of black conservatives and the number of years ago i probably couldn't count them on one hand but i have been contacted on social

media from numerous individuals who thank me for what i'd do it, thank me for my voice and thank me for my book that it has been an inspiration for them not to be afraid, be concerned about their friends or family or co-workers criticize them because of their way of thinking, their views. to make a difference to draw people out from being vocal. >> host: how do you think the republican party is doing on out reach to minority communities? >> guest: they should be doing a much better job. it is very telling because i see it as drive by politicians. when it is time for them to get elected you see them trying to do their town halls, they might go to the black community or might not, they are not putting forth much effort like they should be.
1:39 pm
we are talking about issue is. for get the labels, talk about education, school choice as i mentioned earlier, talk about energy in which is something that affects all households, we all want affordable cheap reliable energy, but with the current administration the policies and regulations are harming the fossil fuel industry. think about it. before obama was president he said he wanted electricity prices to skyrocket. that doesn't help anyone. that doesn't help anyone on a fixed-income, maybe a poor household, that doesn't help people who are looking into how do i get my net isn't, how to pay more for my electricity bill. that doesn't help hard-working americans. look at what the administration is doing and how it is harming hard-working americans. talk about the issue, whether people are black, white or otherwise but also what folks can do to play a role. >> host: 2015, several hundred
1:40 pm
people announce their gop nomination for president, anyone you favor? >> guest: i am still watching but i tell you, someone who will listen to we the people and someone who will honor the constitution, someone who will abide by their conservative principles and values because when you think about and a lot of these politicians want to be elected, stay in office, stay and do one thing to get elected and once they are there have no idea who this person is. i want someone who will be true to their values. >> host: deneen borelli is the author, here's the cover, "blacklash: how obama and the left are driving americans to the government plantation". you are watching booktv on c-span2. >> is there a nonfiction author or but you would like to see featured on booktv? send an e-mail to booktv@c-span.org, tweet us at booktv or post on our wall

that were already -- when it came to development of relationships with marriage and told them they don't have to marry or work or saved any money and the government would take care of the man that is an idea of progress of his mandate is hurting the nation and hurting the individuals. >> host: when did you develop your political philosophy? >> guest: it was a transition into my philosophy. i got all the ideas of the left, i talk about in "blind conceit: politics and racial polarization," the poor are poor because the wealthy are wealthy, i believe my problems are somebody else's fault, i believe america was racist and didn't need to mainstream, over and over again, this is my world view, i got lost and distracted, criminal activity, drug activity, sexual activity, in and out of the well spirit -- welfare state seven years consistently and wasn't until i switch to conversion that
1:44 pm
changed my life and brought in the idea of a biblical world view that i should be responsible with my choices, i should mainstream my life, be self-sufficient and that is when i began to develop a conservative philosophy. became much more libertarian the way i reviewed the role of money and free-market and i wanted to remove governmental barriers over my own life and my own business life so capitalism would flourish and those that are the weakest among us i began to focus more on our impoverished situation and socialism going on in a capitalist society that didn't work. >> you and watch this and other programs online at booktv.org. >> here's a look at some offers recently featured on booktv's after words, our weekly interview program.
