>> if we make the right choices america's future will be even better than our past and better
10:22 pm
than our present. on the other hand, if we make -- traces the bright horizon i have described will not materialize. let me put it very plainly. if we republicans choose donald trump as our nominee the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished. let me explain why i say that. first on the economy, if donald trump's plans were ever implemented the country would sink into prolonged recession. a few examples. proposed 35% tariff like penalties would instigate a trade war and that would raise prices for consumers kill our export jobs and lead entrepreneurs and businesses of all stripes to flee america. this tax plan in combination with this refusal to reform entitlements and to honestly address spending would balloon the deficit and the national
10:23 pm
debt. so even though donald trump is offered few specific about -- economic plans what little he has said is enough to know he would be. bad for american workers and american families. but you say wait, wait isn't he a huge business success? doesn't he know what he's talking about? no, you sent and no he doesn't. [applause] >> i heard that mitt romney made a fairly long speech. and honestly i will address it quickly because it's irrelevant. look meant is a failed cabinet. he failed horribly. he failed badly. that was a race i have to say folks that should have been one. that was a raise that absolutely
10:24 pm
should have been won. i don't know what happened to him. he disappeared. he disappeared and i wasn't happy about it i'll be honest because i am not a fan of barack obama and that was a raise. i backed mitt romney. i backed him. you see how loyal he is. he was begging for my endorsement. i could have said job to your knees and he would have dropped to his knees. he was begging. >> and "washington post".com this is that i met ron is the human embodiment of the republican party's trump terrors. joining us from new york is philip him political reporter for the post. thank you for being with us. >> guest: of course my pleasure. >> host: your article emphasizes there's much more to mitt romney's speech than criticizing donald trump. how so? >> guest: i think it's important to remember first of all mitt romney is a charter member of the republican party embodies everything about the republicans party.
10:25 pm
he is established he served in office he is very sober and very articulate. he has all sorts of policy plans the roots -- the republican establishment is under threat is under threats of the republican party exists so republicans win elected office that we have seen over the course of the past two years that it's become less and less necessary for republicans to leverage the party to win office. donald trump is the best example of that. donald trump didn't need the party to win the presidency if he wins the presidency. he used the party and to use the parties mechanisms to get nominated but he doesn't need them and that puts the republican party in a tough position because he is not a tenable to them. if he gets elected president and there's a senate nomination or a house nomination he can just endorse whoever he wants to. it doesn't have to go with the party structure and his endorsement could mean more. i think that romney personally feels as though this is a threat
10:26 pm
to what has worked for in politics and i think he's doing what he can to try to throw obstacles between trump and the nomination. >> host: one sentence from a piece of what trump has done is revealed how little power is left in the republican party. >> guest: exactly because they republican party if you think about how the nomination processes to work back in the day there was even a primary system. he was the party who the nomination would be. what they did is they leveraged the anonymity of candidates as a power source so people didn't know who these folks were. the republican party controlled the process and gave people the space to run for president if they thought they were real candidates. donald trump had way more media attention before he decided he was going to run for president through the republican party than anyone could have imagined.
10:27 pm
he is not not the holden to them in that regard either. so what does republican party have? what it has is that has the nomination process and some primaries that donald trump is able to step into and when but he doesn't need their money. he doesn't need their media attention come he doesn't need their approval and that makes it very tough for them to hold them accountable. >> host: base map would he think the republican party would look like if it's president donald trump? >> guest: it's a great question. what we are seeing right now in the republican party trying to figure that out. they are trying to figure out can they exist is the same body if donald trump is the nominee and a lot of them are thinking donald trump will step in july but donald trump is railing against the republican party and establishment could change the party and establishment posturing for the campaign and be perfectly happy to let the republican party do its thing once he's president. donald trump doesn't want to
10:28 pm
actually run an entire network of nominations. he is happy to let them do their thing but the question is what are their standards, what are their policy priorities? donald trump is made clear statements that he disagrees with him on a lot of things like the iraq war for example and i think it's going to be tough on republicans to figure out how they deal with a president who stands opposed to a lot of it. >> host: phillip bumps donald trump is dirty cycle that mitt romney's speech today do you think it cuts both ways? do you represents the establishment and donald trump is everything about the anti-establishment establishment. >> i think there is definitely a case to be made in that regard. when you think about for months and months the establishment had a candidate and was jeb bush. jeb bush was their guy. he was the moderate voice. he had the bush family and his legacy.
10:29 pm
donald trump used him as a punching bag for months, to. >> up on them even went jeb bush was at 3% oppose donald trump would beat on him because he was the establishment. he was using jeb bush in that posture. jeb bush dropped out of mitt romney off a sudden steps into that role. he is now the establishment. he is donald trump foiled so it offers going to gain more people but allows them to make the same point over and over the establishment doesn't like me and i may be done. >> host: wasn't a smart move by the 2012 republican nominee to deliver this speech? >> guest: honestly i don't know, i don't think it did a whole lot of damage necessary pretty think that romney feels frustrated. i think he sees the party that he let in 2012 and departure and sees a lot of people upset with the party pretty think he's doing whatever he can to try and stop donald trump. i think what he can do is very limited in the same way with the
10:30 pm
establishment can do broadly is very limited. the establishment is not figure out how to stop trump and met ronnie doesn't look like he is figured out either. >> host: phillip bumps follows politics for the "washington post." his work is available on line at "washington post".com. thank you for your time. >> thank you very much. >> so many of my books were studies many countries the ends of the earth covering a minimum of six countries. here i look at one country in depth and i use it to explore great themes, i think great themes. the holocaust, the cold war, the challenge of vladimir putin. remember rumania and moldova
