industries working in washington put together boiler room operation which they worked with a private eye in new york city to dig up dirt on me and they spent quite a few months looking for anything that they could use to discredit me. i am not alone in this.ally there are many instances in this book of the koch's hiring private eyes to bring up dirt on anyone to challenge them. they have a lot of unaccountable power. they have a huge private company they are trying to play a major role in america's public life but from behind the scenes and they don't really like it when one shines a big lead on them and that is what i strive to do. >> host: you said the boiler room is set up in former congressman j.c. watts's. >> guest: it took some time but eventually i was able to get a good excerpt of a was going on it was extraordinary in my experience. i have covered a lot of things

but i have not as far as i know been the target of an effort to discredit me that was quite like that. report maybe i should be flattered on some level that anyone would take it so seriously but it -- but it was scary in a way. it felt like an effort to run me and i think if they had succeeded, for a reporter that's a crime of moral turpitude. it's something that can take you down. it is not a minor effort. it was a killer effort. so i'm very glad it did notsupp succeed. my colleagues from whom i was supposed to have that drives were fantastic and stood up to defend me and said it's not true one of the stories i was supposed to -- a "washington post" reporter and he said noted

only did you not come you credited me in the next sentenct so it was a badly done operations some ways but it's unusual and it gives you insight into the hardball that these two brothers who have so much power over american politics have played.
