let's welcome the children into the world ther of there are so y families around the country that can't have children. if we can improve so families that don't have children can adopt them -- >> kaine: we can support people to. but why don't you trust women to make this choice for themselves, that's what we ought to be doing. living our lives of faith and motivation with enthusiasm and insight with important issues of todathe day the fundamental isss of morality -- >> pence: a society is how it deals with its most vulnerable, the disabled and the unborn. i believe it with all my heart and i couldn't be more proud to be standing with a pro-life
10:32 pm
candidate like donald trump. >> moderator: i have one more question for you tonight. it's been a divisive campaign. if your ticket wins, what specifically are you going to do to unify the country and reassure the people that voted against you? >> kaine: it has been a divisive campaign and again coming to where he is running a campaign about stronger together and donald trump, and this isn't directed at this man except he said he can't defend donald trump and it's been about one insult after the next that we do have to bring the country together so here is what we will do. hillary clinton was first lady than secretary of state and i am really amazed as i talk to republican senators how well they have regarded and respected hillary clinton. she was on the armed services committee and others. she worked across the isle to get the chip program passed so
10:33 pm
that 8 million low income kids have health insurance including 150,000 in indiana. she worked across the aisle after 9/11 to ge get benefits fr the first responders who went into the towers and into the pentagon. she worked to get benefits for national guard members including hoosiers and virginia and the national guard. she has a track record of working across the aisle to make things happen. and i have the same track record. i was the governor of virginia and in the senate, i have good working relationships across the aisle because i think it is fine to be a democrat or republican or independent after, hillary clinton has a track record across the aisle that will enable her to do just that when we work with the congress. >> moderator: how those you unify the country if un? >> moderator:pence: it's a very
10:34 pm
challenging time. it's wea weekend america's placn the world and it's been followed by an economy that is struggling and stifled by an avalanche and more regulation and it's the trade deals that put american workers in the backseat that's how we can bring so many people together through change in washington, d.c.. i served in washington, d.c. for 12 years as congress of the united states and with many republicans and democrats, men and women of goodwill. the potential is there to change the direction of the country, but it's going to take leadership to do it. the american people want to see us stand tall on the stage again and support our military.
10:35 pm
we want to see an american comeback. it's going through hardship like a businessperson does finding a way through smart ingenuity to fight forward and when donald trump becomes president becomes president and you hear him say he wants to make america great again, when we do that i do believe the american people are going to be standing taller and see the change can happen after decades of just talking about it and when that happens, the american people are going to stand tall, stand together and have the kind of unity that has been missing for too long. >> moderator: this concludes the vice presidential debate. thanks to you for watching. please tune in sunday for the second presidential debate at washington university in

10:37 pm
10:38 pm
>> [inaudible conversations] refused to defend them on russia or the racist sexist remarks and refused to defend them on any number of thing. so, you know, to win this debate they had to stand up to defend the things he has done in his head over the last week, and he had to change the dynamics of the race and do that. >> what is the strategy, you think that he came into hot on the debate? is that the senator that she picked and you all know and
10:39 pm
like? spinet absolutely. he stood up for the ticket and the platform. he defended secretary clinton's record against relentless attacks from mike pence. that's what they said they would do. what you saw mike pence do is weather in the face of any question or criticism of the things that donald trump has said a. >> was a twittering or not taking the bait? >> he just wouldn't stand up for hifor. when confronted with a racist judga racist judgeand asked abos donald trump has said about women in particular asked about donald trump's positions on russia he changed the platform and came up with his own miss of policies and refused to stand up. that's why the person that lost this debate was donald trump because he refused to defend him. >> d. are going to continue on
10:40 pm
the same strategy we had both secretary clinton and senator kaine will be talking about their platform and about the specific policies they have two make a difference in peoples lives and to create jobs and help families afford health care and education t but again the problem tonight was we either heard no defense of the position or actions. if she had nothing to say in response to the very legitimate questions about the position. he was very clever about refusing to contract or provide solid answers to the challenges against the things donald trump has said and done, and i think
10:41 pm
that senator kaine won this debate in particular. the one thing that mike pence stood up for donald trump on is that he hasn't paid taxes. that was the one thing that he defended him on. why are they finding strength? >> i have to say he continued to change the positions in the playbook. he refused to defend donald trump on issues and senator kaine was trying to push him to provide answers on whether he supported and believed in the things donald trump has said and done and then with russia in particular he made up a new position. >> he talked about how she has spent three decades or more of her life fighting for kids with
10:42 pm
families and that americans can trust her to do that. i think donald trump is very frustrated right now. are you worried that they may have seen a republican come across as more polished than perhaps in the next hour for both of these events? >> it was to successfully defend the actions and positions and to change the dynamics of the race. if he was running his own campaign with different positions to make up new policies he did an okay job. but he did with a runnin for a s supposed to do.
10:43 pm
he defended the record and policies and stood with her and challenged donald trump and he went awol on all of those questions >> senator kaine interrupted a lot of the discussion back and forth but you say that he did that? >> what was frustrating as i was saying earlier he would make up new positions for example he had a policy contrary to what donald trump suggested in the past and been on the top questions around for controversial remarks he had nothing to say at all and would make assertions and so senator mccain would correct the record as we were seeking to understand how he could defend some of the
10:44 pm
statements and some of his actions over the last week. spia spinet you argued he doesnt have the temperament to be president of the united states. do you think that mike pence was a contrast to donald trump? >> i think they came in with most americans believing they are qualified. they both have an extensive experience but what's most troubling is that governor pence wasn't able whether it was his temperament or values or beliefs are simply not able to defend donald trump. the only issue he defended his tax. >> do you think that mike pence has the tendency -- >> i think they have the qualifications to serve in this capacity. the candidates run together and
10:45 pm
what is troubling here is mike pence was suggesting different policies than his running mate and refused to defend himself against the loser in the debate is donald trump. nobody had his back. tim kaine was supporting secretary clinton's position, they were speaking coherently and consistently and was an entirely new policy proposal. and [inaudible conversations]
10:46 pm
hillary clinton . positions are to the left and that's why so many people know it's. >> do you feel like he defended the donald trump . positions it seemed like he was trying to not answer them directly. >> tim kaine was rattling off one example after another of a statement that he said donald trump made often inaccurate cost and distorted with no context. the things about putin and women
10:47 pm
-- >> aren't these his words? >> they are distortions of his words. >> he came off as erratic, what do you think of that? the opponent for so many things i think in some ways distorting the position of mr. pence -- >> do you think that interrupting came off as rude and attacking him? >> i think that tim showed much more respect. he was more respectful of the american public. >> do you think it will affect hillary clinton? do you think that tim kaine .
10:48 pm
behavior will affect hillary clinton? >> i think that it shows solidity. what do you think of the moderator tonight? cynic i just don't know. i will have to look at that later on the circumstances that a moderator could have perhaps allowed a little more time and protection. >> does he agree that vladimir putin -- >> i don't know whether he used that word or not but i don't think there is any doubt.
10:49 pm
we've got to get this back on track. we can have a better relationship with russia and we should have a better relationship with russia but it's going to take a strong president. >> how do you reconcile the governor where he called him a strong leader and said he had a high approval rating and was doing things -. >> at one point senator cain said the plan was like the 1986 act.
10:50 pm
he said the plan is like 1986. >> i didn't hear that as you stated. the plan was flawed because it gave him a nasty o a steely proe future. he's absolutely clear that he will not make that mistake again. the first thing that you should do to work with people that have been here a long time. >> [inaudible conversations]
10:51 pm
10:52 pm
10:53 pm
10:54 pm
10:55 pm
>> he said that he would be willing to use military force is that something that mr. donald trump agrees with? >> he said he was against -- >> how much do they have on the topics like military force -- >> do you think that you learned anything . >> i think that he learned what a great choice he made and showed the american people what he was talking about which is i'm going to bring the best and brightest.
10:56 pm
10:57 pm
10:58 pm
10:59 pm
>> its kind in all of the formula in the exchange. she had a hard time and i think she did a good job. [inaudible conversations] >> i think that it was laughable getting back he started the campaign on calling mexicans racist and criminals and one after another when they attacked the integrity of the judge in indiana and the prosecutor so i
11:00 pm
think he has run an insult driven campaign and what he did tonight is to challenge mike pence: on the hateful campaign and the attacks on women calling them pigs and dogs and at war with the former ms. universe i think that can challenge they try to reassure people. >> at what point are you in danger --
11:01 pm
[inaudible conversations] i think she did a good job. this was a discussion and conversation. people interrupt each other. i don't know what the numbers are of who interrupted the most that there was a discussion and she went from topic to topic and it was quite a substitute date and i commend her for the job she did.
11:02 pm
>> the issue came up very late. >> they both have interesting positions on that. >> that question has been interesting given what we see going on in north carolina and indiana with businesses and conventions pulling out because of discriminatory bills. that wasn't part of the discussion but it was part of thwhat was part ofthe discussion discuss their faith and prayer breakfast each week. i thought that was a very good discussion but when you start to get to the issue of contraception and a woman's right to choose, he explained how in fact the view of overturning what would that mean
11:03 pm
to women and if we go back in the country decades and go back to planned parenthood has suggested. >> what about some of the criticisms that tim kaine interruptive? >> i saw this as a different kind of debate. was the conversation. people interrupt each other sometimes and there were a few times they interrupted each other during the first two minutes but for the most part they were conversing back and forth. the question was asked does that mean the moderator wasn't controlling its? i thought she was strong and was able to go from topic to topic and it was a much more substantive debate may be because of the candidates that were in the debate.
11:04 pm
>> when he spent the week on twitter until three in the morning and it's a story comes out that he had nearly a billion dollars in debt one year that he most likely didn't pay his taxes, that high a bar is to change the trajectory of the election if he wasn't able to do that because like many others, it is difficult to defend donald trump . position. >> several are saying that the introductions justified donald trump interruptions. >> this was a conversation format and they both interrupted each other. >> i believe that he did.
11:06 pm
11:07 pm
>> you were at the chair man of the services committee supporting. well, my good friend contrary to hillary clinton donald trump has a partner who comes from the heartland on the issues i think they like his temperament and they help them apply to the working families he and donald trump will get the economy working again which is into doing. somebody that understands the foreign affairs.
11:08 pm
it was to ensure that russia was on the offensive to create one of the worst humanitarian tragedies. >> i think they did an excellent job to reaffirm people to surround himself with greater choices. >> first presidential debate wasn't a good performance for donald trump. do you think this gives a boost to the campaign in any way? >> donald trump could have probably done better but he's not a professional politician like hillary clinton. what mike pence is able to do is refocus the campaign to the issues of success donald trump has had.
11:09 pm
is the economy working for the working americans? kaine is left to defend hillary clinton tax increases at the worst time. pence was there to point out again that under the obama clinton doctrine we have china on the move and russia on the move and iran now has had their program legitimized by this administration and hillary clinton wants to claim credit for that getting millions of dollars to the largest state-sponsored terrorisstatesps mind-boggling. i think that mike pence helped americans refocus on three questions and that is number one, if the economy is working for my family most would say no. are my children and grandchildren going to bed in a safer america, they are really not and number three, is this a
11:10 pm
fair america know, it's not fair. i think that he helped reset the debate and that will help donald trump in the next. >> coming from the other side it said that mike pence didn't defend donald trump tonight. did you see the same thing watching the debate? >> it's more important to talk about their policies and what they will do to help working americans and why they don't trust hillary clinton in the first place. she's talking about tax returns but i'm still waiting to see the 30,000 e-mails. she's talking about jobs and i think maybe she's created three or four when she hired people to help delete her e-mails and they ended up taking the fifth. there's a lot wrong with this picture. so his job was to lay out the
11:11 pm
policies and go on offense about how disastrous four more years be said t said about policies ad national security policies would be. and i think that tim kaine sounded silly trying to convince us that we live in a safer america. >> the governor said several times that it was insult driven and told me about that strategy tonight. >> i wasn't in on the strategy but it's clear all the name-calling i was coming from m kaine. his charges were so over-the-t over-the-top. he lost credibility with the american people and was watching
11:12 pm
11:13 pm
one thing they say is that the message was very clear we can all make fun of make america great again but it gets to the anger and frustration. act the core of the campaign is the belief that we are stronger together on three fronts, number one i think that they represent that in the civil rights movement that we should be about moving for and expanding opportunities for people that actually makes us stronger as a country. we are stronger as a alliance i
11:14 pm
think from what we hear the other side. i think for a lot of americans people are tired of the divisiveness and people do believe that it's important to have alliances in having an economy that works not just at the top. people want to come together to solve problems and at the heart of it that the campaign is abo
11:15 pm
about. i think again there's an acknowledgment that some people haven't felt the improvement and for people who feel frustrated that's part of the job plan for the future. i would put the other side to you as well when some people here make america great again there were times in this country that women couldn't vote and people of color could vote and i don't think that there's anything we want to go back to
11:16 pm
what did you think of the tone of the debate? >> i thought it was spot on and i think that tim kaine it wasn't his best. >> you think the race changes at all after tonight? >> i think that it helps. >> people wanted more. did you feel that he answered? >> i feel he did show his unequivocal support and showed why hillary clinton is a
11:17 pm
11:20 pm
now we will take you back to the scene about two hours and 20 minutes ago in farmville virginia are the ones and only vice presidential debate on c-span2. that's why tim kaine won the debate. mike pence was nowhere to be seen to defend him on his racist and sexist remarks and reviews to defend him on any other number of things.
11:21 pm
he had to stand up to donald trump to defend the things he has done and said over the last week and change the dynamics of the race and he didn't do that. >> did you think that senator kaine came in to haunt on the stage tonight? >> absolutely. he stood up for the ticket platform and defended secretary clinton's record against relentless attacks. that is what they said they would do. so what you saw him do is wait there in the face of any question or criticism of the things donald trump has said. he wouldn't stand up for his ticket mate. when he was confronted about whether he could defend the comments of the mexican judge when he was asked about the
11:22 pm
things donald trump have said about women and in particular about the position on russia he changed the platform and came up with his own set of policies and refused to stand up with donald trump. the person that lost the debate is donald trump because he refused to defend him. >> how is the strateg that strag toward sunday? >> they will be up there talking about their platform and about specific policies they have to make a difference in peoples lives to create jobs and help people create education but tonight the job was either heard no defense of the actions or he made up new ones and all of a sudden we hear him talk about vladimir putin in the opposite so i don't know if he was thinking about his future
11:23 pm
ambitions or simply had nothing to say in response to legitimate questions about this position. >> were you surprised by his demeanor on the stage today? >> i think that he was very clever about refusing to confront or provide solid answers to the challenges against the things donald trump has said and done and i think that senator kaine won this debate because he had to interject constantly. the one thing he stood up for him on his he hasn't paid taxes in almost 20 years. that's the one thing he defended him on. >> why is it a sign of strength? >> it continues to change their position on the playbook.
11:24 pm
he refused to defend the donald trump on the issues and senator kaine was trying to push him to provide concrete answers on whether he supported a belief in the things donald trump has said and done and made up new positions. >> i think donald trump must be sitting there very frustrated right now because he i think senator kaine did a great job challenging the statements and the records into challenging his policy positions. >> for people that turned in a may have seen a republican come across as more polished than perhaps in the next hour for these events.
11:25 pm
>> is to defend the actions and positions and changed the dynamic in the race. if he was running his own campaign with different positions to make up new policies, he did an okay job. but tim kaine date with a running mate is supposed to do and defended the record and policies and stood with her and challenged donald trump. >> they kept interrupting. do you think there was too much of that? >> what was frustrating as i was saying earlier, he would make up new policy positions for example
11:26 pm
on -- team he had a policy contrary to what was suggested on the new policy with russia and then he had nothing to say at all and would make assertions so he was making sure to correct the record that i think he was coming into this as we were seeking to understand how he could defend some of the reprehensible remarks and statements and d some of his actions over the last week and he simply couldn't do that. >> do you think that the temperamental as a contrast or not? >> i think both senator kaine were qualified to do this job. they both have an extensive experience but what is troubling
11:27 pm
is what it i that it is the temr values or beliefs they are simply unable to defend and the only issue is the fact he hasn't paid taxes. >> do you think that he has a tendency -- >> both of them have the qualifications to serve in this capacity. they are suggesting different policies and refused to defend himself again i think the real loser in the debate is donald trump. nobody had his back. every time supporting secretary clinton's position they were speaking coherently consistent consistently.
11:28 pm
11:29 pm
>> rattling off one example after another of a statement that donald trump made every time virtually distorted -- they've got their list. have you seen them quite? are these all donald trump wor words? spin a lot of the reaction is that tim kaine came off unhinged. why do you think that he acted that way? >> he had attack lines and i think in many ways discarding the position.
11:30 pm
>> do you think is interrupting came off a as rubens of attackig him? >> i thought that he showed much more respect and mr. pence was more respectful. >> do think the behavior will affect hillary clinton? >> it is a good event for the trump campaign and shows confidence going forward. i think as good as possible under the circumstances but i don't know. i will have to look at later and heait laterand hear some of ther comments but under the circumstances the moderator could have allowed ms. or pence
11:31 pm
a little more time and protection from being interrupted. >> does he agree that vladimir putin is a small leader -- >> i don't think there is any doubt that vladimir putin has acted very recklessly for several years now and the entire reset hillary clinton started has been a failure and we have to get this on track. i believe we can have a better relationship with russia but it will take a strong president. >> how do you reconcile governor
11:32 pm
pence saying that there was a high approval rating and he was doing things his voters liked? how do you reconcile that? >> they said the planes like the ronald reagan 1986 act which a lot of immigration reformers don't -- >> i didn't hear that as you stated that the ed 6.1 was called because it gave the amnesty with a promise in the future and donald trump made it clear he will not make that mistake again. the first thing you should do is end o the lawlessness and then

11:37 pm
>> i'm here to talk about the performance. the governor said he would be willing to use military force. is that something that he agrees with? >> i don't know the answer to that. >> how much experience do they have on topics like military force? do you think he learned anything like if he lost his cool when he was on the attack?
