matt. >> host: we will start with scott in greenville, north carolina on our line for others. you were on with jason noble ofe the "des moines register." >> caller: thank you for taking my call. what can we do in all honesty or lack of a better word to restore the republicans or constitutional government when as you can see in my humblee opinion the political parties today are corrupt, both of them and we are just basically for the first time we have one person as an outsider who has major flaws and you know who i'm talking about and i believe a flawed person and apolitical. i really believe that he has the
7:49 pm
pulse of the nation in terms of getting people to realize how the country has gone downhill and that's the change in washington because of both political parties. people are fed up with it and we need somebody from the outside preferably not donald trump but what can we do to get somebody that's not from a washington insider that can bring about change and not have to rely onon both political parties and continue the corruption that's going to continue even if donald trump doesn't get in and we have four years of hillary and then we have another public and get in. we need to make change and i just wish the media and everybody would focus on that than just the personal flaws of the candidates. >> host: scott, got you. thanks. mr. noble. >> guest: that's a big question. you know i think the american
7:50 pm
political process is slow. it's low by its nature and the nature of serving. in 20 million people but it is responsive and if there is a andsroots outcry for change and for moving the system in a different direction it will happen as long as people stand up and adopt -- vote for that change and do the things in the public arena to call for it. >> host: let's hear from mike who is in des moines. mike, go ahead. >> caller: just like you say, what i see, i drive a delivery vehicle everyday and i see a lot more trump signs in people's yards than i do hillary. hillary won here early in the early polls or whatever a ways back that i see trump it looks like anyway took the momentum
7:51 pm
and it seems like violence or supporting trump or than hillary. i don't like that she is trying to cash in on just women's votes constantly. i just don't think that's right either but from what i see it looks like trump is more popular in iowa than hillary. >> guest: you know the signs on the ground, that's part of the campaign and my guess is that varies from area to area from neighborhood to neighborhood. i think you are right so far in the polling in the ways we have been measuring this race that trump has been ahead. it will be interesting to see over the next two weeks here how things come together and if the ground game in the organizationi and the get out the vote efforts for the clinton campaign change that dynamic has been in place.i >> host: one of the papers and the iowa highlights this morning about mr. trump claiming phony
7:52 pm
polling over the last couple of days. does that resonate amongst iowa voters particularly republicans? >> guest: you know among histh supporters there is that sense that he is being treated unfairly by the media and i have talked to a lot of his supporters in the community at his events, people have responded to our polls in thepo definitely is a feeling among his supporters that there is a campaign against him not just by hillary clinton but by the medit and others. i don't know if that is shared much more widely beyond that. >> host: from dubuque iowa here is brian with jason noble of "the des moines register." >> caller: hi, how are you doing? >> guest: good, thanks. >> caller: yale it's no surprise the previous caller from iowa believes that there are more people in iowa voting
7:53 pm
for trump than hillary and i won't mention that the color was white and male but for all the trump supporter's calling in and complaining about health care, if they would have voted for single-payer health care which most of the industrialized western countries have then they would realize a portion of the tax money to complain about paying all the time to, understandably so, would pay for single-payer health care with that money. if they realized and sipping a third party, the insurance companies and outrageous amount of money ever month for health insurance costs, and i had a couple of other thoughts. >> host: brian, let me ask you a question. why did you bring up the fact
7:54 pm
about trump voters in the aspect of the white male. why was that important to bring up for you? >> caller: well it's speaks for itself, don't you think? >> host: will make the case. why did you bring it up?i >> caller: well you know i don't know if i want to get into the minutia of predicting theks jatement speaks for itself. >> host: jason noble what did you take from this statement then? >> guest: well i will tell you there is definitely a sense that trump has been rooted a lot in the demographics of the state. i was a predominantly white state. it's over 90% white relative to other swing states. swing states where hillary clinton is doing better and it also has a higher share of this electorate are voters without a college degree which is thencole another characteristic of trump supporter's. they tended to be white men tended to be voters without a college degree and we have more

of that is as the share of a elect took -- a lector at which may share the appeal. >> host: tom, hi. >> caller: good morning pedro, good morning jason. a couple of quick questions. jason what he phineas or political affiliation? >> guest: i'm a registered no party voter in the state of iowa. >> caller: have you made in the past year and a political contributions any political party? >> guest: i have not. >> caller: finally, i am concerned about the case release of the nine or more women and what has to register down on those individual females who have come forward?
7:56 pm
>> guest: "the des moines register" is part of the network and i will tell you the national story is like the accusation of mr. trump are handled by "usa today" and run in our "usa today" section of the paper rather than reported on an edited by reporters at the register. >> host: from missouri are line for others, it k. is up next. hi. >> caller: hi. i'm sorry my voice has been damaged in surgery.ag i'm not sick but anyway i would like to ask your guests what distresses me this year is the discussion of what to do to maki a difference in the lives of the ordinary american people has just been eliminated more or less in discussions of pure. politics. what kind of mass transportation
7:57 pm
do you have in iowa? game people get from one town to another on public transportation or do they have to own and maintain their own private vehicle as we do in missouri? i am concerned of course about do you have enough doctors? i know we have a shortage ofhe d doctors in the united states and there seems to be no discussion of producing more and allowing american young people, more american young people to study medicine and graduate programs. i know they are quoted in these schools across the country which i am not sure i agree with. >> host: mr. noble do you want to take any of those? >> guest: yeah i think it's an important issue to make.
7:58 pm
a lot of voters it feels like it's been a personality and politics driven campaign rather than the one that talking about substandard issues and that's been a real disappointment for voters across-the-board. i think when candidates are trying to talk about policiesan it's sort of drowned out and may not show a willingness to dig in on the details and instead are focusing on character and past history and things like that. >> host: mr. noble can we take you away from the presidential race for a quick moment to talk about senatorial races. chuck grassley, how is he doing and set the stage for us. who is he running against and how is that going? >> guest: sure. 6 chuck grassley chairman of the judiciary committee is facing democratic challenger patty judge who is a former lieutenant governor and secretary of agriculture here in the state
7:59 pm
ricci came into the race back in march right around the beginnin. the discussion about the supreme court. senator grassley is playing a key role in the senate in the nomination process. the guy in the judiciary committee who has refused to hold hearings for the nominated judge merrick garland. the judge entered the race as that was all heating up and i think under the calculation that would be a defining issue in this race really hasn't happened. chuck grassley has had a comfortable lead throughout thia race. in last iowa poll we conducted he was leading by 17 points. he is very well-funded as you can imagine with a six term incumbent and has been much more present on the tv and more visible in the campaign. at this point it looks like he is headed toward a comfortable re-election. >> host: (202)748-8000 four of

those 11 iowa. focusing on i was a battleground state and looking at other battleground states.to fol to follow up on that jason noble taking look at outside money in the congressional races. can you tell the folks at home about the story of what's going on? >> guest: sure, the story focuses in on two congressional races in the state of iowa. the first district which is northeast iowa, cedar rapids traditionally democratic areashs and the others at their district which includes the des moines metro and point southwest.t both have freshman republican congressman and both appear to be very competitive. the story reference was looking at the money that's coming from the campaigns and outside groups seeing a lot of spending on tv ads and other voter outreach which indicates republicans and democrats nationally are competitive and are seen as

potential pickups and republicans see them on -- well over $3.5 million. >> host: by the way if you want to see the district debate of iowa take place live wednesday at 1:00 represented david younger republican and jim mauer the democrat. you can watch it is part of our c-span 2016 coverage live this wednesday at 9:00. outside spending when it comes to the presidential campaigns jason noble can you paint a picture there? >> guest: we are sayinges outside spending in this presidential race. priority usa is at big super pac spending money here. there are a couple of packs supporting donald trump as well. the bulk of the money being spent in i won tv is for the hillary clinton campaign itselfp if we have an seem quite as

robust in the presidential race compared to the congressional races. >> host: hertford south carolina on our line for others is jim. hi. >> caller: good morning, how are you? a quick comment about her guests making that comment about the candidates not talking about the issues.ey we say don't talk about the issues because they think they know if they told the american people the truth and talk about the budget deficit or the tax increases of the spending cuts people would want to hear it anyway.ink hill i think hillary and trump know this so i think it's a lost cause. i wouldn't blame it really on the candidates. i blame the voters who really don't want to hear it in the people that we are electing who know this and aren't going to broach the subject. >> host: mr. noble? >> guest: that's one way of
8:03 pm
looking at it. at some point somebody needs to make policy. >> host: lived here from and i will president in clive, iowa. evelyn, you are on. go ahead. >> first i wanted toto congratulate the register on i what i think is an excellent writing on this and the stance it has taken. i think the register was one of the first major newspapers that kick doubt of any trump rallies or anything having to do with trump and then trump went on to battle the "washington post" and other major newspapers and given the importance of the media in america, i just wanted his opinion on the effects that has
8:04 pm
on the election where you have a major candidate who is fighting the media. >> host: mr. noble. >> guest: sure. i can speak to the registers experience a little bit into your other question. our editorial board which givess an opinion on better politics has been very critical of donald trump over the last several months.n the caveat here is i don't take part in those discussions or have a role in that but the editorial board has been critical of trump for many months and it led led to four times that getting press credentials and the axis that other journalists for getting to his events. didn't affect their coverage much because we were still ablee to get into the events and covel

them with the general audience. but how has trump's view in the media affected his race affected his race i think was evelyn's question. he definitely made it an issue and they think it's something for him that has rallied hispo supporters then created a sense of solidarity among his supporters. the broader effect, i do worry that it undermines faith in objective journalism but i don't think it's anything we can come back from. >> host: mr. noble, one of the topics the candidates are addressing her jobs in the economy. iowa's current unemployment rate is at 4.2% and also other information at the meeting the family household is $50,000. how did those factors play out as far as how people decide to vote but especially when i look at economic features?
8:06 pm
>> guest: sure. i think that is kind of an important distinction that voters are going to make between the candidates. we asked the question in our latest poll about how you feel the direction of the country is going and the differences were stark between the two parties in between this clinton and trump. trump supporters, more than 90% of our iowa polls said the country was on the wrong track and among clinton supporters there was a majority or a slight majority said the country was on the right track. right track, wrong track question goes back to how a voter is feeling about their position and their opportunities in life and the numbers overall that you reference in iowa are pretty good. the unemployment rate and the

income is relatively good but i don't think that's uniformly felt across the country and some of the smaller communities where a big employer has left in recent years and nothing hase come in to fill the gap, there's a real anxiety about life in the community and the way the country is going in the people that are feeling that anxiety in a lot of ways are going to trump. >> host: let me be more new ones.siness if you are in the agriculture business in iowa are you a candidate that is elected differently as well? >> guest: the question is an interesting one from the agriculture industry. corn prices and other commodity prices and iowa are down.owow they are down at or below the cost of production which is not good for farmers. there is a lot of angst over the obama administration and the way it's handled subsidies for ethanol and
