this president did do things by executive order. there is no question they should come together to pass immigration reform legislation. [applause] and they were not that far apart. the president and the congress to talk that through. it does not take but one thing. one person willing to be a leader with eight congressmen are senator paul ryan. i have a lot of faith in him. to say i were call the time. we don't agree philosophically, but we talked and a lot of time i

did not want to talk. he called one eyed 2:00 in the low morning. the phone was on her side of the bed she hands it to me i started to say yasir. said 21? i don't know. [laughter] something about central america but here is the point we talked all the time and work through all kinds of things budget tax safe drinking water you name it we don't agree but allotted times we press each other but that was true with reagan in the house the years we met with him just about every tuesday morning 9:00. sometimes it was bipartisan.

so the trend of not communicating is a recent phenomenon even though he tried very hard to get immigration reform. and immigration is one of the big issues if we would have done what we should have we would not be here right now. it is not just about illegal immigrants but legal immigrants we had people coming to america that cannot get here. i had to doctors from canada and that wanted to come to mississippi, highly qualified you thought i would try to sneak in said on the same. [laughter] it was hard. i saw that coming 2006 and now this president and congress don't talk that is why the deficit worries me more than ever and now we

worry about my grandchildren now is the next-generation congress and the president are not dealing with it so the next president all the hillary would have to do would be to follow the role of president bill clinton because he did meet and talk with us but it is donald trump then somebody or some of us have got to watch out to say mr. president you say you will change washington, the first thing you need to do is to begin to communicate. for things you need to make it work number one is communication. if you don't talk you ain't getting nothing done number to develop chemistry. clinton made me nervous but we had a relationship it was a chemistry that made us possible to turn into action but did it in we have lost

is what in the hell are we really for? republicans or democrats? do we really know what either side actually would do if there is a majority in the congress and have the white house? i have seen it. leadership. one man or one woman that look at the slings and arrows of the media to say we will have all of the above and do it so it could change on a dime. but it will take personal restraint because i have seen it. washington is a tough place and then i got knocked down into you the valley but the best thing is you learn when you get back up to do things better.
9:56 pm
i don't see that right now with mitch mcconnell or with nancy pelosi i dunno what to expect from chuck schumer he is smarter and every bit as partisan but is transactional. he can do business. and they enter stand that. but there is some hope it all begins in the white house. we have to get a different tempo coming out of that place.
