the people we touched at the rally. the people who had never voted before and the people have not voted in 20 years. the people have not voted for a democrat. the people have given up hope. all of them are saying we want our future back and i intend to future back and i intend to help a give it to you. [applause] i say to all of those who voted for us, this was a remarkable coalition for change. many of you had to put aside this or that personal ambition to be a part of a broad, deep, deep, commitment to change this country. i ask you to keep that amendment as we move from election to a governing. we need more than ever for those of you said let's put the the public interest over personal interest to keep it right there for four years so we can turn this country around. leader of this, the greatest country in human history. it's an expanse i carry with me, an an example i will always follow.o intdu i wanted thank you house speaker pete laney, a democrat who introduced me today. i want to want to thank the legislators from both political parties with whom i have worked. across the hall in our texas capital is the state senate, i cannot help but think of our mutual friend, the former democrat lieutenant governor,d bob bullock. his love for texas and his ability to work in a bipartisan way continue to be a model for all of us. [applause] the spirit of cooperation i have seen in this whole is what is needed in washington, d.c. it is the challenge of oururmust moment. after a difficult election we must put politics behind us and

work together to make the promise of america available for every one of our citizens. i am optimistic that we can change the tone in washington,fr d.c. i believe things happen for a reason. i hope the long wait at the last five weeks will heighten a desire to move beyond the bitterness and partisanship of the recent past. our nation must rise above aes d house divided. americans share hopes, goals, values far values far more important than any political disagreements. republicans want the best foro our nation and so do democrats. our votes may differ but not ou hopes. i know america wants. reconciliation and unity, i know americans want progress and we must seize this moment and deliver.

by encouraging and empowering the good hearts and good works of the american people. this is the essence ofis compassionate conservatism and it will be a foundation of my administration. are these priorities are not merely republican concerns are democratic concerns, they are american responsibilities. during the fall campaign we differed about the details of these proposals but there was remarkable consensus about the important issues before us. excellent schools, retirement and health security, tax relief, a strong military, a more civild society. we discussed our differences, now it is time to find common ground and build consensus tot make america a beacon of opportunity in the 21ststic this century.r future i'm optimistic this can happen. our future demands it.

our history proves it. 200 years ago and the election of 1800 america faced anotherpr close presidential election, a tie in the electoral college but the outcome in the hands of congress. after six days of voting and 36 ballots, the house of representatives elected thomas jefferson, the third president of the united states. that election brought election brought the first transfer of power from one party to another in our new democracy. shortly after the election jefferson in the letter titled, reconciliation and reform, wroth this.el the static character of our countrymen as a rock to which we may safely more. unequivocal in principle, reasonable and manner, we should be able to help to do a great deal of good to the cause of freedom and harmony.ter 200 years have only strengthened the steady character of america. and so as we begin the work of

healing our nation, tonight i call upon the character.h respect for each other, respect for differences, generosity of spirit, and a willingness to work hard and work together to solve any problem. and something else i ask you, to ask every american, i ask i ask for you to pray for this great nation. i ask you for prayers for leaders from both parties. i think you for your prayers for me and my family. i ask you to pray for vice president gore and his family. i have faith that with god's help we, as, as a nation will move forward together. as one nation, indivisible. together, we will create an america that is open so that every citizen has access to the american dream. an america that is educated, so every child has the keys to realize that tree. party.

[applause]n i you may not understand completely in what ways, but it is true when i say to you that you have taught me and testedlim me, you have lifted me up any have made me stronger. vi i did my best to express myor vision and my hopes for america. we worked hard and we fought hard. i wish that things had turned out differently. in an american election there are no losers, whether whether or not our candidates are successful the next morning, we

all wake up as americans. [applause] that is the greatest privilege on the most remarkable good fore fortune that can come to us on earth. with that gift also comes. recrgation. we are required now to work together for the good of our country. in the days ahead we must find a common cause. we must join in, and effort effort without remorse or incrimination, without anger or rancor, america is in need of unity and longing for a larger measure of compassion. i hope that president bush will advance those values in the coming years.o

i pledge to do my part to to try to bridge the partisan divide. i know this is a difficult time for my supporters. i ask them, all of you, to join me in doing that. now, more than ever with our soldiers in harms way we must stand together and succeedd in iraq and win the war on terror. i will do everything terror. i will do everything in my power to ensure that my party, a proud democratic party, stands and true to our best hopes and ideals. i believe that what we started in this campaign will not attend here. [applause] our fight goes on to put americg back to work to make our economy a great engine of job growth.ro our fight goes on to make affordable healthcare and accessible right to all americans, not a privilege. our

fight goes on to protect the environment to achieve the quality, to quality, to push tht frontiers of science and discovery and to restore america's reputation in thei bee world. i believe all of this will happen and sooner than we may think.k. because we are america and america always moves forward. [applause] represuse] i have been honored to represent the citizens of this, and while in the united states senate now for 20 years.t i pledge to them in the years ahead i will fight on for the people in the principles that i have learned and lived with here in massachusetts. i am proud of what we stood for in this campaign and of what we accomplish. when we began nobody thought it was possible to even make this a close close race.

but we stood for real change, change that would make a real difference of a life of our e nation and the lives of our families. we defined that choice to america. i will never forget the wonderful people who came to our rallies and stood in our rope lines, who put their hopess in our hands, in her hands, who invested in each and every one of us. i saw them the truth that america is not only great, but it is good. [applause] so with a grateful heart, i leave this campaign with a prayer that has evening raterha meaning to me now that i've come to norvasc country so much better, thanks to all of you and what a privilege it is spent to do so. that prayer is very simple. god bless america. thank you. a little while ago i had the honor of calling senator brock obama to congratulate him, please. to congratulate him on been elected the next president of the country that we both love. in a contest is long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. but that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of americans who once wrongly believe that they had little let's take were little influence in the election of an american president it is something i deeply admire and commend him for achieving. this is an historic election. i recognize recognize the special significance it hath for african-americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight. i have always believed that

america offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. senator senator obama believes that too. we both recognize that though we have come a long way from the old injustices that one sustained our nation's reputation and tonight some americans the full blessings of american citizenship, the memory of them still had the power to wound. a century ago president theodore roosevelt's invitational booker t. washington to dine at the white house was taken as an outrage in many quarters. america today is a world away from the cruel and prideful bigotry of that time. there is no better evidence of this than the election of an african-american to the presidency of the united states. let there be no reason now. let there be no reason now for any american to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on earth. [applause] senator obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country. i applaud him for it and offer my sincere thin pit sympathy that his beloved grandmother did not live to see this day. though our faith assures us she is at rest in the presence of her creator and so very proud of the good man she helped raise. senator obama and i have had and argued our differences and he has prevailed. no doubt, many of these differences remain. these are difficult times for our country. i pledge to him tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face. i urge all americans.

victory truly belongs to to, you. i was never the likeliest candidate. we did not start with many endorsements and it began in the backyard of tomorrow night what the front porches. and men of women that only add fiber $10 to the cause to grow strength from the young people from their advocacy would be in their homes and families for jobs and also from the not so young people who braved the cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers.

to approve more than two centuries later a government of the people by the people and for the people have not perished from the earth. this is your victory. [cheers and applause] >> did you did not do this just to win any election. to do it because you understand the enormity. for even as we celebrate the challenges that tomorrow will bring with the planet in peril there are those awaking up and doesn't mind negative desert in iraq and afghanistan to risk their life for us.

their mothers and fathers lie awake after the children fall asleep to wonder how to make the mortgage or pay the doctor's bills. new schools to build and alliances to repair the road ahead will be long and the climb will be steep we may not get there in one year or even one term but america, i have never been more hopeful that we will get there. i promise. we as a people, will get there. agree with every decision apollos in the did make as president and the government cannot solve every problem. but i will always be honest about the challenges we face. especially when we disagree. the only way it's been done for 220 years callous and by callous and what began 21 months ago to come to this night the victory alone is not the change that we seek but to make that change that cannot happen if we go back to the way without a new spirit of service or sacrifice solera us some and a new spirit where each of

us resolve to pitch in and work harder that in this financial crisis we cannot have a thriving wall street while main street sufferers. as one nation and one people. to fall back on the same partisanship and what has poisoned our politics for so long of the maturity. up party founded on of parties of self-reliance those are values and has a great victory tonight we do so with determination of our

progress. [applause] as abraham lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we're not enemies but friends and must not break our bonds. for those americans whose support i have yet to earn i may not have won your vote tonight, but i hear voices. i need your help, and i will be your president. perfected for what we must achieve this election had many firsts many stories will be told for generations one woman who cast her ballot in atlanta. she stood airline to make her voice heard except she is 106 years old. she was born one generation past slavery. no cars in the road or no planes on the sky. also because of the color of her skin had because she was a woman but tonight think of all that she has seen over the last century in america the heartache and the help of the struggle the times that we are told that we cannot to say yes we can.

and then to speak out. across the lowlands with a new deal and new jobs at a common purpose. and then when fell on the world to witness a democracy. was there for the buses in montgomery and birmingham and a preacher who told the people we shall overcome. yes we can. a man touched down on the moon.

a wall came down in berlin, a world was connected and this year this election, to cast her vote because after 106 years for the best of times in the darkest to know how america can change. yes we can. we have come so far. we have seen so much but there's so much more to do. if the children shall live to see the next century if my eight daughters are so lucky to live as long as her , what change will they see what progress will we have made? this is our chance to answer that call. this is our moment. this is our time for

part of our coverage tonight of election 2016. live coverage getting under way right now with all kinds of coverage with the senate and house results and of course, the presidential results. here we will go to canada from coverage by the canadian broadcasting corporation we will simulcast all night and begin coverage now. . .

like pennsylvania and michigan, just close. 10 states are well into the counting. here is what the big picture looks like right now. for states called for donald trump, blue for hillary clinton, yellow are states that are in progress which you can tell is most of that map on the eastern half of the country. the polls are close but no final result yet. the great states are where people are still voting. the banner at the bottom of your screen, keep your eyes on that, it's keeping track of the all-important electoral college.

each state has a certain number of college votes. the magic number to win is 270 votes. it will also flip every so often to show this error -- share of votes each candidate has produced you can see donald trump's in the league in both of these categories so far but let's get to some key states that are now close. we will start with the one that everybody is watching because they can determine so much of what's going to happen tonight. that is florida of course. at the moment hillary clinton, this is where around -3/4 of the vote counted already and she has a lead of about two percentage points and that's a lot of votes but it's not over yet. nobody has called florida yet but she does have a lead and donald trump's got to win florida. that's what most people say and if he doesn't win florida the path to victory is very, very

difficult. from florida we look at north carolina. this is another state that is critical for donald trump. the republicans won this, won this against barack obama in 2012 but right now donald trump is trailing by five percentage points. it's early yet though in the sense that this has not been declared. there is no decision yet on which of these two candidates will win north carolina but at this moment hillary clinton and is in a very good position. ohio is the third of his hat trick of states that donald trump has to win if he's going to perform tonight and end up being president. so far as you can see he is trailing in all of them. ohio, early in the voting as well but he's trailing by six percentage points. the board at the bottom shows you a course the number of electoral college votes each candidate has so far.

33-29 at this moment. now you've got clinton ahead, 39-33. all of the states declared so far are ones that were expected at this point in the evening. no upsets here, no battleground states that clinton ahead 50-33. let's go deeper on a key race. susan arma sent is in miami tonight with that assignment. a heck of a race there and susan more details. >> ps it's a very exciting here at the university of miami at the election watch party. as you said all pass to the white house have to go through florida so trump needs to win here to go any further in the country and changing demographics and a surge in the latino vote here in florida may decide not just the winner here in florida put in the country as a whole. you know they have a saying here that to get south enough to go

north meeting that the traditional republicans overwhelmingly vote is concentrated in the north of florida. down here in miami is true blue and that's where the democratic party has to scoop up enough votes tonight to offset the red in the central part of the state and north of florida. that's what they have tried to do. we have 70% or more of the ballots counted. they are coming in. fast. they keep changing within two percentage points. remember president obama won this state by less than a percentage point back in 2012. a lifelong republican here at the university, rudy fernandez said for the first time in his life he was a special advisor for george w. bush, he voted for hillary clinton today because he said he say quote never trump man.

he said if clinton wins florida she may take the country and republicans have -- about that growing demographic of the latino vote that turned up in the early voting of the state. so we will be watching this very carefully. we may have a pretty exciting decision not to long from now. >> susan thanks very much and it is going to be fascinating to watch. here's the big board. this is the map that shows you the states that have been called already. trump is the red ones and clinton are the blue ones. the ones in yellow are where counting is still going on and only percentage points separating the two but clinton in the lead. clinton in the lead in those three key battleground states that we have been talking about florida, north carolina and ohio. let's see what is declared because you can tell there have been some changes in the

electoral college votes. none of these are surprises, keep that in mind. of the 50 states about 40 of them haven't changed in terms of who they voted for, the party they voted for in the last four elections. these are some of them. delaware goes to clinton, massachusetts, the heart and soul sometimes for the democratic party, that goes to hillary clinton as well. moving on from massachusetts we see maryland, another state that was in the democratic column and stays in the democratic column. illinois at cannes barack obama his chicago roots and hillary clinton with his -- her chicago roots as well. that's it for the clinton team. all right, let's go to cincinnati now. we have been talking about ohio another big battleground state. clinton that lead in the moment.
