10:04 pm
story is so compelling that we have to go back to the beginning a little bit because of course mcdonald is he a adjacent is everywhere but it had modest beginnings in a little town in california. >> that technique to say and bernard d. no that was very small back to brothers to came from new hampshire who wanted to make their way out of the of movie industry. but wound up starting in orange juice and hot dog stand.
10:05 pm
that led them to open a restaurant and then if you remember the era of the car hop they were unreliable they did not show a for work at the time in america aware people where falling in love with their cars, roads were being built and the brothers had a hard time to employ the dishwashers because they attracted blaze that meant shenanigans in the parking lot glasses were one broken so they shutdown and decided to pare down the menu to just i eight -- eight items like hamburgers and milkshakes and french fries at first people in san bernardino were very upset because it liked the carhops
10:06 pm
service but it didn't take very long before they've fell in love with these expeditious and speedy service and the good food was cheaper. said a full meal with $0.45. >> ironically. five so that was of very beginning that they became wealthy. >> they were working as hard as anybody ever does they would split the shift working in tall 11:00 at night they felt were lucky because they could buy a new cadillac every year that was their idea of success to
10:07 pm
upgrade every year one was married the other did not have kids they'll live together in the house of the hill they worked hard but they were happy about $100,000 per year profit and life was good one and that was a lot of money back then. >> so there raw obviously doing something right but then other people became interested so they did do franchising sorts greg. >> bay were writing about the speedy system to put the hamburger on the assembly line figure out in a very small space to move the production very quickly out to the customer in under 10 seconds so putting that on the assembly line was great but other people were opening the hamburger marcion's small businessmen
10:08 pm
and san bernadine know became back at but the first mcdonald's was in class secrecy is the restaurant that was revolutionary so what was so s ordinary was that people would show up in one to steal the idea and they said rico and sell this formula so they put that in a manual and they sold the dia they really didn't even want to sell the name that did not make sense why would you want to put mcdonald's on your restaurant? $950 you could buy the blueprints which included of golden arches.
10:09 pm
>> what a bargain. that was the beginning. but they were happy doing what they we're doing. >> bay had national but they knew how hard they were working one restaurant. >> now geographically moving to the midwest let's talk about ray kroc that was pretty much in of entrepreneur a hard-charging sales guide who was c.? >> ray kroc was the old guard sales man who had been selling paper cups since a
10:10 pm
young man and is network found the multi spindled milkshake miss chain mixer the you could do six and five at a time that was revolutionary like the us paper kepi love to be off the road and likes to figure out and a larger than life personality. and this is how he encountered the brothers. and with this mcdonald's operation he goes there and they knew him as the mr. multi mixer because they bought the of.
10:11 pm
but why would one needed so many? in then we went there with the very important piece of equipment. so that was helpful to their system and to see that in his autobiography the system was so perfect. and that was so beautiful he fell in love with it not just the efficiency but the cleanliness and was a neat freak. he was very happy to see
10:12 pm
this said wanted to propagate across the land. because the more multi spindled milkshake machine. >> release started with the of milkshake. >> it did. up this point did he decide this past to go big. when he first played eyes on the mcdonald's operation trying to figure out how to rip-off the idea or emulate or the knicks. [laughter] deciding he did not want to steal a but helped to sell it so he went to dinner they were reluctant. they had begun franchising one was working on their behalf and so the stars of line and basically they said
10:13 pm
if you want to do that no skin off of our backs. do this city's started. >> the first franchise opening was in dallas planes not far from where he is in chicago so i believe if you go to corporate they consider that the first opening in the united states >> looks like a museum. there is one function across the of parking lot just like it did. >> paying homage to the regional ray kroc stores. >> was the opening them up in various places quick. >> not as quickly as you might think but they were opening their own hamburger stand budget is hard.
10:14 pm
but then to go to st. paul minnesota where the story takes a turn is romantic. >> so tall us about the food joan is before she met ray kroc sigma issue is 26 years younger year he was 52 but that point she was in her 20s and a young mother and a beautiful blonde woman and was very skilled pianist and organist. and back in the data was a very valued depression and local television and hired kurt to play music in between the shows on the brakes and has a good
10:15 pm
concern of selling music lessons to kids. and then with that criteria restaurant where she would play the organ n or the piano. and after dinner she would go to the lounge to play piano. so now keep in mind. >>. >> doing their thing with the criteria but ray had been selling for about two years since 1957 but the
10:16 pm
owner franchised and said with satellite -- with that milkshake machine mixer because ray came in for a dinner meeting and sure enough's there was a beautiful woman playing the organ. natalie with her youthful good looks but he made money as a pianist early on. and less playing piano with heard technical musical proficiency that was very intoxicating. >> did they actually meet that night? reintroduced? >> best icahn talc were from the autobiography take a couple of grains of salt, he actually demanded to meet
10:17 pm
her. but the extent of of conversation has never banned completely clear even jones' daughter she was there that night as her father came with her to pick her up put it is entirely clear the depth of the conversation to suggest there may have been more to that to open in stored number 93 into hired jones has spent to manage. so there was a spark that night but it would be awhile even though their lives may have then on and separate paths. >> it is important to point out in 1957 and several
10:18 pm
years for word mcdonald's was not successful as a corporation the people who open franchises it was very lucrative they were paying 1.9%% royalty to the mcdonald's corporation where half of that was going to the mcdonald brothers that was enough to keep it growing at the rate that it needed to help the corporate police the standards from store to store so they were under a lot of pressure they were enormously helpful. but it was a difficult time because other people were starting to franchise. mcdonald's just came up with that formula that worked but the stores were doing great and they were
10:19 pm
becoming nationally known and will call operators understood the power but it was on a perilous slope to bankruptcy. >> so with that consideration now you get the relationship between the two that felt something that night 1957 but it is seven more years before they are married. >> so zero jones' husband was so good at managing this mcdonald's he got a $10,000 bonus and he took the money to put back into his own mcdonald's. at that time to open a
10:20 pm
mcdonald's you had to go where the opportunity was. joan and her husband were told they had to choices one was it allentown pennsylvania or rapid city's south dakota. in because originally from that part of that world they chose rapid city so off they went to rapid city with extremely little money in their pockets with uh grand ambition than maybe the family finances would be on better footing. so wet that point women were not allowed to work in mcdonald's that was from the brothers not just ray
10:21 pm
kroc but wives were expected to help their husbands so when they saw the construction and started to order because the food came locally it was not brought in on a truck because ray was committed to keeping of food local one. so now she is working behind the scenes probably doing important things at the time but clearly had a sense for business. >> very shrewd and not afraid. >> how do they cross paths glaxo take as to the point where ray kroc was married three times so there was another wife and i am scheerer so tell me how they
10:22 pm
diverge again. >> at that moment in time they were very committed and then to build a huge company and they were key and critical to help mcdonald's get on good sound footing with that underlying real estate and as a business minded person going into different communities, it is hard to imagines the landscapers so they had parcels of land for there was level else going on. so he went to help negotiate
10:23 pm
the bank's loans to brokerage the deals and ray was much more than a hamburger guy but the other was high minded finance so that is going on while joan hopes her husband but somehow they become involved with each other i am pretty sure it had something to do with one of the early hires which was a world war ii pilot and early on to be entered call that is a whole other book ended up living in florida so the earlier mcdonald's would fly around the country in the cessna and identify parcels of land but somewhere along the of away favors stopping
10:24 pm
off in rapid city so a relationship evolves he was desperate to marry her she'll most married him but she married somebody else not to give away the entire story but in 1965 when mcdonald's went public debt that is when he was married to his second wife so she was still in rapid city when he hit the lottery and became more of $33 million on paper. that was huge you have to read the book for the rasta because that is the year that they finally get married. >> what kind of fighting there both divorced.
10:25 pm
>> two is very quick and small and that uh double large ranch which was a spectacular ranch property that raid bought in 65 because of a sudden he was extremely wealthy and where he headquartered as the kroc foundation but it was also a retreat for him and his second wife but when he divorced jane to married joan who was convenient to was call the j and r ranch. it is closer to the sonoma valley.
10:26 pm
in his second wife lived in beverly hills and then he finally larry say woman for years and was an idyllic as they thought it would be part. >> was for re because now he thought he was complete mcdonald's had done well beyond his wildest imagination now we have celebrities ceos and it is so interesting who would have thought they would have been so media savvy was unusual and he was perfect her ratio alders store aim not milkshake machine becomes a multi millionaires selling hamburgers it was a fantastic story alive people
10:27 pm
were very dubious about the business it did make sense pinellas seems so obvious to us but back in the '60s wall street was extremely dismissive of the idea until the stock went public and kept going crazy over the years but he was extremely happy they landed in chicago where he lived his whole life but joan quickly discovered ray was difficult and tempestuous and she may have been aware of the recognized he had a serious problem with drinking it was only to lawyers after they married that she did file for divorce and then almost as quickly she filed she mysteriously decided to stay in the marriage that is
10:28 pm
where the core sense of philanthropy really began is devastating and she could of been a much younger spouse to spend money on bobbles she decided to start a charity that she calls operation team 20 that was kroc stalled back words betty ford had not come out yet so the fact that she was so moved by her experience with al-anon when is a core companion to aa for those who do drink that was year missy's successful but in the '70s those that were
10:29 pm
working to morph the purposes as well as address how the family was impacted and she was financed and center using that money that he earmarked for charity and would convene people at the spectacular ranch scam brought together the great minds who were eager to figure out ways to develop these new systems but shaded and just to that which is terrific enough's but she was very active in creating media so to see mcdonald's grow and grow with the use of mass media as we know they are terrific merchandisers today that is nothing new that goes back to the earliest days of the business and for her work with alcoholism and
10:30 pm
addiction she produced of play a series of public service announcements using the best animator in the country at the time of published books and got a deer abbey to write about the pamphlet that she published so was clear they touched tender for with that high-school education that they could do such formidable work. >> what did he think about that? he didn't seem to think he had a job with the drinking he loved what she was doing but the closest advisers were nervous because they did not want joan talking about re. this is the type the it is somebody is super successful had any problem was
10:31 pm
unthinkable but now there is nothing unusual from a somebody has an addiction problem but in the '70s it was not something that was even unfathomable. he would even hang out at the of ranch with the term of those from the addiction and he would be smoking a cigarette having a cocktail to china in. he was happy for her but concerned about the bigger issue as a result will chapter of their relationship with the darkness and competing and
10:32 pm
then she sweeps into reroute for a medical program that was important and it continued until recently. >> what was their life like to gather? he is supporting here. and obviously growing the empire and she says 40 was like to gather? >> both of their personalities. they had crazy money that they used and at one point. >> but it was very contemptuous people who knew them well to referee because
10:33 pm
they're not the type of couple to go home and have the fight and to describe to a very compressed u.s. but yet but in the '70s was the toast.
10:34 pm
>> batch of why not? but and a huge animal lover so with the places that they needed to go for the fat -- the veterinarian the baseball players for a big part of their life but joan really became friendly with some extremely formidable men after ray died like mr. rogers was a very close friend, father from notre dame, they lived a larger than life apartment all make sure drive in chicago was extremely opulent the first thing they did was make sure there was an organ built into the wall and of course, a piano but they were big in tube clamorous
10:35 pm
parties. >> so if we talk about philanthropy, ray kroc dies 84 and leaves behind about $500 million. >> half a billion dollars. in that day and age of what today maybe four times that much press magnate told me but i cannot remember. is a lot. >> he passes away but at what point did we know she return into the of philanthropists that she became? was that right away or did that unfolds? >> can was stirring of operation corporation she exerted her power that her
10:36 pm
brother is a research science but giving many ways to medical research that was not distinguishable with those hifalutin in subjects and especially during this period there is the push and pull of those big donations to assist school that had nothing to do with that. but she could seem very the money was transferred right before he died.
10:37 pm
>> the week that he passed away shoe is making donations. >> but a man walked into a mcdonald's not far from where they had been living. >> the worst mass murder
10:38 pm
that she was so benevolent but then whiff the compassion was extended to the man who perpetrated this violence as says a lot about joan and then to go me to this woman to console her that it says a lot about her that at that time that could have been most concerned about the family business cannot in crisis management
10:39 pm
but concerned about this woman whose life was ruined and that is really the first not today at that time it the donations she would make seemed inexplicable at the time because there was no rhyme or reason or pattern in the beginning but it was how people were benefiting from her largess. >> of first of agent i wanted to read the book they said philanthropy is so boring there is nothing wrong with people who write big checks to help people that as with favorite person on earth but she was so unorthodox and just says he bought the san diego padres
10:40 pm
on his way back home don't was a news junkie who would read a story to call up then give a ton of money or meet because she met from this woman who had the education now we've taken for granted and we should never there is an incredible presence. so the next day. >> bedtime and. >> pet in this 70 is there
10:41 pm
was the huge juggernaut but then there was a flood and brand for care and would see them there. and discussed but to see that terrible state on television every night to. she was so moved by that she had her friend the former mayor fly into grand forks with the check with $20 million the condition to go immediately to flood victims and to. >> so now we get to the big donations to.
10:42 pm
>> yes. as a public radio reporter i had always heard about john crocker and the $325 million gift which was not whimsical but it it was because she then related to the president then as she was captivated by the mission as people can name every host she just understood the power and the value of the media of democracy but what i did not know is sponsoring she gave again after that was 10 times larger to the foundation army posthumously that to build a recreation centers and pour in neighborhoods all over the country and it was so tran4
10:43 pm
with the of lions share of fortune and the salvation army was not equipped to do this and was very difficult they are not into building world-class recreation centers. >> but that amount? >> i think it was close to a million dollars even by today's standards. >> to sum up the way they have so much time talking to the family'' was the biggest impression greg. >> living life to the fullest even though diagnosed with a terminal illness and her family was devastated she said i have lived in amazing life. how do i give my life
10:44 pm
meaning especially as you and joan was useful summon eight different ways. most of us don't have that resources but to be so big and everything she did the ratio gamble, smoked, incredible tools that she gave away but she also had the biggest part so that is what sticks with me that she was not afraid and those are qualities and a lot of things that may be here
10:45 pm
husband would not have been excited about or necessarily would not have supported link wishes from the heart and compassion. >> i think we all know more than one walked in here. [applause] >> if you access questions. >> and then we really
10:46 pm
appreciate but i just wonder with marijuana becoming so mainstream in his time end then. >> i have no idea to legalize marijuana. but i do know that she was aware of betty ford and an early supporter the was headquartered outside of minneapolis and those had the united with it did pavilion any place so i can only imagine unfortunately that is a good business to
10:47 pm
be involved right now and only gets bigger. should reply doubt the oxford exchange? if you don't know they are the grandchildren of those as started of mcdonald's empire here in the bay area. and then to build this amazing building. and that is a bookstore. >> ended is so much more
10:48 pm
beautiful than i thought and trannine got this invitation that was the cascading effects and certainly this is shining and nothing like it. >> so us to of you did that conversation? >> so even before mcdonald's came along with it ray kroc there is a woman so june was raised at the core business selling the milkshake machines with a
10:49 pm
larger-than-life personality. she walked in and he hired her on the spot for years and years and to incorporate mcdonald's as a core business. so he was so instrumental he gave her a 10% of stock and when it went public in 1965 became fiver $6 million on paper and there were articles written about her at the time that they were elevated to treasurer and she became executive but what i love about her apparently she wore turbines
10:50 pm
and was very elegant but what is so cool about her when they came up with the franchise formula and was the president of mcdonald's taking a public when they were at odds with friction in the company and to miscalled of vice president of equilibrium and everybody would go to her that was like mom and dad fighting. she would be in the middle and would help everyone she was an incredible person i wish i could find out more about further is the website her family created but she stayed on the board but i think and tell her death she was very instrumental with ronald mcdonald house she built that beautiful
10:51 pm
property and palm beach when she left mcdonald's in chicago so a company that was not favorable to women that was told by her presence. >> you did not major? >>. >> so the reuse from just last week talk about the of broader picture of all the different angles greg. >> that is funny mcdonald's now is in pop culture that people say ray kroc and laura dern plays
10:52 pm
the first wife. is strange i was interested because of the npr connection wondering who is this woman who paid their finances but i also cover the sculpture in santa monica where was the arts reporter in this giant nuclear mushroom cloud was built by john crock it was in disarray they didn't know how to fix it and i thought why did she built this sculpture and it turns out she was a major proponent in the '80s with some of movement and that is what got me interested. i think it was coincidental with the movie looking for something like "the social network" and it is a strange, since that we have
10:53 pm
been reading these old books that were written about the early days of mcdonald's one was an dammar from 771 was an excellent corporate history. i know now if we're interested in things that our nostalgic or our childhood but it is a fascinating time but ray kroc is studied in business schools all round the world even today with the franchise model of course, pdf so we will see what happens. it is a good story. but that was a very happy surprise.
10:54 pm
>> and that synergy with the book being launches great because just from the trailer it will bring all new energy and perspective may be of little different than what you can see in the block. >> my publisher is brilliant to say that they knew that the movie was coming out. [laughter] >> as with most great companies, who surround themselves, what about fred? how does he play in the relationship wexford there some exchanges you identified? >> i did not get to talk to him before he passed away he would not talk to me but he
10:55 pm
would handpick his successor after a retired and became the chairman he was injured all even before that as a young man apparently he was there the night re walked into the restaurant and first laid eyes on john he wanted that in the documentary so what's amazing force he was. literally at the griddle he actually worked at the restaurant and knew intimately how things worked behind-the-scenes and was entrusted by ray and groom to buy ray to takeover and he did and served for many years. also instrumental to get ronald mcdonald house that does incredible work with six children and their families but in 1977 when
10:56 pm
rates turned 75 decided to take this idea that started in philadelphia as a result of one franchise that grew out of the need in that community and fred identified that he asked people to donate to a fund that allowed other mcdonald's to get involved to start their own local ronald mcdonald house. also a whole book unto himself and the critical force in the early days for scheerer. >> for sure. >> there is the record and was that to.
10:57 pm
>> one of the reasons a wrote the book and kept at it when i hit a wall because mcdonald's would not help me with my research. and jones family was reluctant to talk. but i kept at it looking at jones philanthropy realized she gave away all of her money before gates and profit were heralded to give away all of theirs. she was unorthodox in the early '90s she was tired of running the foundation. is very complicated and understandably so. she shut down her foundation and started to give out of her checkbook she did not need the structure. that is not something that works for everyone but she
10:58 pm
did not want to answer when you have all of these request you have to handle the appeals the more you give them or they ask. she wasn't trying to hurt any regulation she just wanted privacy. there were people in her life that thought if she kept her foundation emplace come at the time of her death it would have lasted in perpetuity if managed correctly but she made the choice not to do that and did not feel the need for the foundation to last forever or there would be people that she would trust. even though the ford foundation has nothing to do with the ford family that is interesting for those who are involved in any sort tough philanthropy. it is a right for everyone
10:59 pm
but was definitely right for her and pioneering because people have taken in that pledge that warren buffett says will give half or more of their wealth better not wealthy a love the people can make that commitment and she made that but not with any proclamation that is just what happened. if it is a fascinating glimpse for sure that i hope celebrates her for a long time to come. >> this took five years of your life was this a labor of love blacks. >> i have a ph.d. of trade and joan. [laughter] and i have never done anything for as long as i have a as this book.
11:00 pm
>> we'll help you enjoy paid lisa napoli burning about "ray and joan" i feel like we're so much better after this conversation. >> we appreciate everybody being here. [applause] . .
