get the suspect to sign it. record it. that's the reality today. prosecutors and defense lawyers don't argue much anymore about that. they will argue whether or not that miranda rights were waived. so that's what's really happened. we now argue about waiver, not whether we now argue about consequence in ways that i think are central to do process of law. >> you are watching the tv on c-span2 in prime time

tonight. >> i've been collecting rare books for the past 30 years. i decided to relocate after selling my bookshop which also sells new books and in the past ten or 15 years the sales of new books have really suffered with the advent of e-books and everything going digital, but what i found is the interest and rare books has increased. in my shop right now there are about a thousand books. in my inventory there are about 5000 books. i rotate books i specialized in four different areas. i specialize in bibles from the past 500 years, i specialize in early mormon books, classical literature

and early american history. i enjoy collecting bibles that belong to historical figures. i also like to share brigham young's copy of the book of mormon. it is housed in a nice protective clamshell. according to family tradition, this is a copy of the book of mormon that was on his nightstand when he died in 1877. you can see his signature on the title page. i enjoy early american history. this is one of the most important books printed in america. it's thomas paine's common

sens sense. it was robert bell on third street in philadelphia. if you go there today you will see a boxing here's where common sense was printed, 1776. it was like. it's quite rare and printed three times in january of 1776. thomas paine went to robert bell wanted to have this printed in one of the proceeds to buy a soldier's mittens. after just three printings they had a falling out. thomas paine allowed anyone to print it for you lower the price and that's one reason the book is so well-known and printed and has the designation of the highest saturation of any book printed in america.

my favorite find in the past year is a bible that began to the man who wrote lord of the rings. i have a nice protective case made for, but he had a very simple bible. it was printed in 1947 in the middle of writing lord of the rings. he was writing that from 1937 until 1954. you see a beautiful well known recognizable signature on the front, but what most interested me is that he imitated the book and made comments in the margin and the last pages john he is making, in greek and comparing it to seven different versions of the bible.

jrr coke in's bible, the one he had while he was writing lord of the rings, just a thousand votes in here are worth over $10 million. there's even a few books that are worth over a million dollars each. i have books as well as a hundred dollars, but that's kind of the starting level the books i have. what i enjoy so much about the rare books, it's a treasure hun hunt. it's finding them and realizing that these older books are different. they have a different feel and look and story, often depending on who own the book. that's an added story within the story.

this is the perfect place to keep these books is its fire group and humidity controlled and there's no uv light. this little has a big story. if you look at it you see it in latin and this could be overlooked unless you understand what the symbol is. this book has a great story, but you have to know history. you have to understand the history of this time to understand who own this book. you must have to do detective work. now to determine who own this book we look at it when you see this you see a crown and that makes you think royalty and it makes you think french royalty, but why do you see the two sides. this person was married so this would be a queens copy.

the king was louis the 16th. this is the seal of maria antoinette. this is in latin. if you know what her still look like, you would be able to identify the spread very of her books have survived because when she was executed, her life rates were absorbed into the french national library. this was at a little but she carried with her and she would've had more than one. each year the copy. they were given new copies each year so she may have given this one way and that was out of the french national library for another book i have is a shift about that's quite rare. he died in 1616.

in fixing three complete works with first printed and again in 1632 and 1664 and 1685. only about 250 copies of each but have survived because there's only about a thousand world. the vast majority are institutionally owned, but i have a 1685, and even before you open the book, you know the book has a story to tell. starting finding -- stunning binding. it's the complete work from 1685. i have it open to romeo and juliet. i will collect books for the rest of my life. people have asked me, when
2:53 am
will you retire and what will you do. i'm already doing it. i can't think of anything i would rather do than travel around, tracking down rebels. i enjoy these books. people asked me if i read them. absolutely. you never know for the earlier owners have made an inscription that could substantially increase the value or added interest. i will always do this but i never get tired of it. i love sharing stories with old and young and i look forward to every day. as bookshops have been closing in record numbers, national chains are closing down, 15 years ago i knew the owners of about 300 bookstores. 250 have closed in the past 15 years. it's important for these stores to continue to

survive. dad character to the local community. it's a meeting place for people and it keeps history alive by these bookshops continuing to be in existence. >> now on book tv, a literary tour of san bernardino california. with the help of our vocal cable partners. we spoke with dean of the college of social and behavioral college. we talked about his book globalization and terrorism. >> we will find that terrorism has been around since beginning a time. if we go back to the legends in the books, in the old testament, we will remember
