tv Republican Alabama Senate Debate CSPAN September 26, 2017 6:03am-7:13am EDT
6:04 am
. >> good evening welcome chewed tonight's debate i am from troy university i will be the timekeeper for this evening's activities there is no moderator for the debate tonight. i would ask them as a matter to help to move this along you will refrain from affirmation and applause during the course of the debate and we will have an opportunity at the end to thank both candidates were with us tonight. we will begin with opening remarks by the senators and proceed from there. senator strange?. >> thank you very much i
6:05 am
cannot tell you how much i appreciate the opportunity to discuss the issues that are so important to our country at this historic time i went recognize my wife who would be here with us but our second grandson was born the day before yesterday's so she is in washington with our son and daughter-in-law's so i have a great pleasure to sit with them in the hospital and a whole that young man as it puts that into perspective why we care about the next generation she wished she could be here our first date was that a nascar race and i knew we would have a long and happy marriage.
6:06 am
so this is a historic election in coming have been the state's history of lot of gay issues are at stake so who is the most qualified the president's agenda? to make america great again? the president supports me if you have not followed the president on twitter pages put out a great tweet about his enthusiasm for my campaign. and then to come to haunt spill in the afternoon in campaign for me. because we'd deliver a close friendship and we are people
6:07 am
of accomplishment and we bonded. learning the ways of washington the hard way but nobody is more determined than the president's award is the vice president's stand? who does he think would be the best? of vice president pence has endorsed me and he said james so anxious to go into the fight with you shoulder to shoulder how can i do that? piece that i will be an alabama and this weekend. the president of the united
6:08 am
states in the vice president could choose anyone in this race. my opponent or the primary but they got into the race because they know what is at stake. who will help the president? could knows something about immigration? building a wall? in forcing a wall? infrastructure? jobs and the economy? as a concrete record to get things done. i do. i will talk about those issues. we're past the time of speeches and empty promises we have to have results this is why the president has endorsed me and why we have become friends i did talk to
6:09 am
the president and for about half an hour he said how're things going? there is a lot of things you're in the country and we see that. ruling greek -- angry for lack of process -- progress to think through divine intervention he was elected by spend fighting the obama administration as a last line of defense of the constitution. we protected religious liberties we want those cases you can imagine the anger and frustration. that is why we bonded he said basket something done in washington. i need you at my side. you have common sense, you have been in the fight.
6:10 am
the look forward to being an alabama this weekend. thank you. >> i like to start by introducing my wife married 33 years with four children and five grandchildren and about four days the future course of our nation will be determined even in the form of the debate could become a new norm of political discourse across the country with the special interest group washington d.c. is waiting to see what happens in the state of alabama with regard to the race with millions of dollars and then to control the people that
6:11 am
were false or malicious advertising takes the place in the political arena. and think the people of alabama are ready and informed. that my wife has been criticized the election of donald trump november 2016 gave americans a new hope in new inspiration for the future of this country. those are not happy with his election would protest but the establishment decided to take that easy course and do nothing obamacare has not
6:12 am
been fully repealed all those steps have been made in the right direction and i support the bill. we have got to do more. politics goes on as usual and we get frustrated was a graduate of the military academy of west point i want to work our military strong again. with experimentation to be inclusive and one to support the troops that have fought overseas and revitalize our economy the greatest difficulty is the federal government will need to return to free market enterprise and regulations need to be kept and
6:13 am
bureaucratic policies need to be raised. made in america of mean something again i want to bring in those federal judges who think they are above the constitution and supremacy must be stopped and finally want to see virtue and morality we turn to our country so the first president said it was day necessary spring to popular government to collect data indifference the foundation has been shaken with crime and corruption and abortion and sodomy sexual perversions we pearland -- sweep our land where liberty
6:14 am
and justice for all comes across our land we will be good again per girl and then we will be straight. [applause] >> i would ask again that we try to refrain from the applause until the very end. >> i agree with those principles laid out but the difference is i have accomplished many of those in the arena. a lot of things that we would agree on but the president made a choice he picked me as a person who could get that done. so let's talk about the issues that we care about and what have we done to a finance those issues? the
6:15 am
one that caught fire here in alabama of god into politics because of jeff sessions i was monitored in -- mentored he served as attorney general before i did and i consulted with him as i was running for the senate to take his place because he said the us standard they have fought the best to washington but the signature issue was immigration that is a critical issue. who is the best person to ensure that we enforce the law? because i have a record i have worked with jeff sessions over years and
6:16 am
since he came into office and said we will do something that hasn't forced the law that is a novel concept. jeff is doing that i have supported him 100 percent and border crossings are down 70% because we have an attorney general who will enforce the law and the president knows our record and alabama's law going after illegal immigration we were as support as we could be but he knows when president and her barack obama said i will justice side i will not enforce them i went to court with the president's administration
6:17 am
and we won. the amnestied of president who would disregard the constitution of the united states. and then to say we will help you do that. we took an oath to uphold the constitution of the united states in the rule of law everyone. the president knows that. i could give a speech about this all day for girl with this is why he has endorsed me. and those to hear him talk about a person here in the senate race. other people want to talk about agendas and mitch mcconnell and everything under the sun except the issue.
6:18 am
that sessions spent 20 years of his life devoted to help the president be elected to make america great again. it is so critically important to get something done. i am not backing down on immigration i am all in and have supported him 100 percent of the time since he has been in washington and i am frustrated hour conservative republicans are not. john mckean said thumbs down. talk about frustration after spending six years doing that to protect the constitution and winning. so just talking about daca
6:19 am
the signature issue he will remove the obama rule. he knows that that is why he has endorsed me. >> i am certainly glad i'm not running as the president and vice president of the united states. i can say what the president thinks or when he goes to the bathroom or what moves he makes. but let's talk about the wall was a vietnam veteran i defended our country in combat. i am the only combat veteran in this race includes securing the borders illegal aliens were a threat to our country that includes building a wall. now leading up the rest of the conversation i always
6:20 am
mentioned we could stop illegal aliens from crossing the borders because i was in the united states military and i know we can build the wall we cannot sit and wait for the al wall is built before reduce something about immigration. sonat add day made is totally false. on september 19 healthcare.gov confirmed the finding the benefits financially from a program to the foreign nationals. in with those financial disclosure form with that 16 percent sheriff with a
6:21 am
company that offers residency. in exchange but according to attract grassley it is wrought with fraud and mismanagement with security problems. so why wait on congress? obviously they did not do their duty so we have to look at what has to be done. not to be used as originally intended. and has received revenues to the wealthy chinese investors.
6:22 am
but they denied do their duty from the department of homeland security which violated the law. deferment and deferred action on childhood arrivals is very simple dreamer education, there is no such thing as a dreamer because it was never passed by congress for a guide when it didn't obama himself through homeless security decided to implement the program to violate the law and that is why we're here today. i submit further with their strange has the same obligation to rectify his own company. if we wait on congress to do everything we will lose.
6:23 am
daca is wrong dreamer is wrong. we need to look at the reforms embracing american immigration and. the need to look at vetting the people coming into our country. that is what jeff sessions says. in that a lot of people daca are not qualified. and where they stand. and i support firmly and the sooner the better.
6:24 am
>> for somebody who is complaining because we care about the issues the campaign was on. the second was making the economy great again. so people need jobs and employment and provide for their families with the most generous state in the union in terms of what the gift that we cannot do that with their working two jobs. you may get tired of hearing this or is supporting me in this race but think it is a good thing because he is a
6:25 am
personal relationship with the junior senator from alabama. that is why he is coming here friday night. but he knows my record on the economy. i don't know of any jobs that was created to the personal foundation of and i have worked to create jobs in this state. and 12 years ago and the car manufacturer wanted to come and the company hired me to represent them to see if i could make it home in alabama and a travel to korea and learned about the business and represented to the process and there was
6:26 am
2500 people and the suppliers would ripple through thousands and thousands of jobs throughout the state for areas for people that need jobs that are at home desperate to work but the president knows that there is a fantastic facility called the institute it research park outside of the console and then they decided to make it world-class. so they hired me to represent them to see if they could make the dream becomes a real. and that has a top scientist
6:27 am
in the world and their curing diseases right now and they are brilliant scientists. that'd is putting people to work that is a huge benefit but the thing i'll say briefly but it ties together with the privilege i have had but i appreciate the fact of the service to this country with the greatest people in the military the sergeant's their private is and to build those weapons
6:28 am
to make them safe from that command with a greater force college through those combat ships and he said i need another ship for the navy. and working together we got that ship this week with the national defense authorization act. thousands of people over the next decade it will help to keep the nation safe the strong bids military and is all part of the economy that is why the president is so enthusiastic it all comes back so will we make america
6:29 am
great again? who he knows of getting things done. >> again i'm sorry it another president person i haven't been to washington i haven't been able to talk to a him sort of know where he is thinking so that is where the lobbyist does to say i am a career politician. i have been a judge for 14.5 years and was a prosecutor before that as a judge i have a hard job and it is very difficult now it was
6:30 am
over 20 years ago but eventually as a circuit judge first elected as 61 percent ever. i served as a judge eight years and did all the jobs. i have served two terms at two separate times my entire political career my opponent on either hand is a professional lobbyist over 23 years. 1980 through 2003 was 6.6 million dollars over a nine year period with that lobbying disclosure period. so they didn't have the
6:31 am
money to pay me. at was the key is a professional lobbyists because there was a condo with over half a million dollars but they don't want to walk six or seven blocks from the capital so as 23 years as a lobbyist in washington d.c.. what do lobbyists to? they represent special interests and isn't it strange on behalf of the russell corporation church congress to pass the central america free trade association costing the united states over 4,240 jobs. mexico, honduras, the sewing plants were closed president
6:32 am
trump had a right to say you do not get rid of a lobbyist by sitting in the united states senate. this is pure hypocrisy in this race. recently this debate was supposed to be held at the eye and we discover that the president coincidentally happened to be the senate leadership fund that were making the bad ads about me. ben lee found out the board did not know anything about it.
6:33 am
so politely behind-the-scenes told them we were not coming to get out by saving face because something was rigged. and they came back to say it does not give a reason. and then at the end the campaign for another debate. what is you water the more afraid of? if they listen to their concerns from elected office? those eight
6:34 am
of 12 forearms -- forums that is eight and out of 12 that is why we canceled the debate and i will tell you that is why this was set up so you can understand the qualifications of the office >> this is the only forum that the would agree to because lincoln and douglas talks about the issues over what he has accomplished
6:35 am
about the difference between the candidates for somebody new complaints about personal tax that is all i have heard so far tonight so one issue that distinguishes me is my record in this area . that is why the present endorses' me. and with our traditional values. he knows i was the last line of defense literally to protect the constitution and rule of law. for six years when congress did nothing. with harry reid and those people i was in the fight and winning case is.
6:36 am
but with the environmental protection agency with this is a nation we should be governed to be ruled by the obama administration. we were in the fight. the epa decided it becomes a navigable water if water backs up after rain that is a power grab it from the obama administration and is out of control and illegal and we sue them and one. they stop that. we stop that egregious grabbed from the government. and that was cooked up to
6:37 am
put called out of business. local miners are in tears because somebody tries to put the amount of business due to a political agenda. they would be the ones that suffered need to know about economic development so some very conservative as attorneys general were not afraid of a fight and we stopped that. we won. we were the only ones to stop obama and who were willing to do it or could do it. with that precious religious liberty. when nothing is more important to me.
6:38 am
has my young lord and savior my life and my family life and my professional life. religious liberty was threatened. i was then the court room when it was unjustly held constitutional. but a group that believes the have a right to choose about their personal lives without religious broadcasting institute so they would make them pay contraceptives, they said we will not do that. we have to fire a readier credit providing insurance we will not violate their religious principles and we went to court on their behalf. you remember bobby lott the case and really in the
6:39 am
middle of that. to make sure hour religious liberties were protected. now we have a president that will. he is confirming am proposing judges that believe in the constitution and was proud to sit in the chair of the senate when justice abortions each name was brought up -- and we confirmed him. and to the government to get the nod of the way. but to get the government out of though way be have to support the president and get more conservative judges i am glad he believes in the man to do that. [applause] >> my opponent said his major accomplishments was being removed from office
6:40 am
tries he didn't mention a was removed once and suspended but standing up for religious liberty. [applause] what did he do? acknowledged united states supreme court decision was binding is that all state agencies will comply with the same sex marriage provision. he caved when that verdict came down. when they upheld their injunctions the only state in the union that has upheld the injunction before and after, and first character is an issue in every case. was talked about cleaning up
6:41 am
corruption. because we are both prosecutors. and one principle be both here do it is highly improper to except give us from someone if you are charged with murder i want to read something to send a letter to the legislative body to delay the work of the house judiciary committee and tell i am able to report that has been completed. >> by november 3rd the house responded with a news release saying they are suspending debt hearings
6:42 am
that is conducting a separate investigation of the government. but then with their strange came out and said he'd never said the government was under investigation. he was appointed last week to say that they did not discuss the investigation. he opened the investigation but if so did you not recused from the investigation as you are required to do?. >> he changed his story two
6:43 am
times. did you have been an investigation or not? we have to get to the truth of the 16 boat rule from the very beginning. only recently did the restart -- reverse course through the house and senate to say he supported the 60 vote rule he opposed that. so why did the other strange weeks ago suddenly decide he would reverse course? i will tell you why because he will do anything to keep his job that is called lack of character. [applause]
6:44 am
>> i didn't hear anything about the solutions just personal attacks. [applause] and frankly you could sit here in the debate and not hear anything he has accomplished or anything he will do to help the president. but that might come up lois talk about accomplishments. so doing to the benefit of our state and it is so appealing to the president. these - - she wants to save money and i can into words how many attacks will look how much he is attacked every day. >> because if anybody with
6:45 am
what you have to endure these days. but i will tell you about a case i'm incredibly proud of of the biggest environmental disaster in our state's history. bin nuclear horizon blue up and killed 11 people per car worked in the industry i grew up in a very modest family and worked all the way through school. i am lucky i am 6-foot 9 inches tall ticket a basketball scholarship and i worked overseas. so i know the oil and gas industry of close. with millions and millions of barrels of oil.
6:46 am
and believe me that is the record. but then to hire an outside law firm the first day in office to say thank you very much i appreciate your help we will represent the state of alabama. and that is what we did and i went to new orleans. they took the greyhound bus with every major corporation on down from bp with the biggest lawyers and we worked tirelessly to ensure justice for the gulf of mexico and we got that he picked me to be the coordinating council alabama
6:47 am
had a seat at the table we recovered over 2.$5 billion for our state $1 billion went to the general fund is in desperate shape. under the contract fell $140 million would go to the law firm. that is the biggest supporter. that shores up medicaid. so with those public corruption units those republicans have done something that has never
6:48 am
been done. i talked to do jaffa sessions we were making a lot of people mad at the statehouse. a republican that was the politically expedient thing to do. and still mad about that. that is why president trump looks at me to say who has done this? he has his own budget zeroed out because we took on the rich and powerful. a negative be prouder of our team with those dozens of convictions i am proud of that record -- record using
6:49 am
the rule of law. >> never he mentioned the movie was investigating i have not attacked him one time in an ad on television or radio he knows it. every day and every hour and every minute and carries on if you don't believe me. and two, from my team modest and don't ask me to the bathroom and i was in school. so talk about the issue of national indebtedness.
6:50 am
this is a hard subject to talk about if you have a million dollars and then you have another million but so mad gin each month simply by raising your credit limit. but one day even if you spend one-fifth that is where we're going 2047 and that burden of prop up across the of prosperity that is what we're doing in 1962 one-third of $1 trillion. and much more than being in
6:51 am
the senate voted on as a temper seventh and with the dangers but after the hurricanes there was no need to do that. and then to say that of $57.5 billion that we have laid aside. and we can pay for it voted against the america first amendment. we need to stop unconstitutional spending. one is that before congress now that affects the west point graduate.
6:52 am
and then to go over to israel and was stabbed to death. and president trump puts forced a bill that is the expense report to palestinian authorities that stop payment to terrorist and families. and our government pays their family i would do away with it. and we don't care who authorizes that. you don't give money like that to a terrorist.
6:53 am
you for $144 million you need to get away. nevada is what you need to do. and that should be passed by congress with welfare to foreign countries. >> this is the final unit and may move to closing remarks. spee mcfadyen say pressing issue and is not as dangerous as it has been today it is incredibly
6:54 am
dangerous. the president and i agree on many of the things of national security with the leadership of maya area talking about alabama's role one thing that is happening there. and recently chief of operations and having a relationship and then the commander in chief not just the president. and then that says something to the people of our state how he feels to help them get the agenda passed.
6:55 am
and they could have stayed out of the race are picked anybody else be sent to their strange is on the ground and i have been honored to me it a couple and i could just tell you that this is critically important right now maybe that's off hottest place in the world so proud of his leadership to change the dynamics to have a chance to visit with secretary of state and then to be incredibly impressive or the diplomatic efforts. >> what i told the president that we're not taking any options off the table.
6:56 am
if he is threatening and i look forward to doing that i appreciate the president's confidence that the vice president will be here on monday looking at the defense capabilities us not forget about the need and i am honored he looks to me said to have the president's support and encouragement is important and significant because we need an advocate that the president trust and will call on to say what do you know?.
6:57 am
>>. >> i am very happy that president trump is the commander-in-chief. and that is cry went to west point. and to say no more transgendered troops. and appreciate his support. and that comeback on that i have been down to mobile i have talked to people about that for curve is a very could program and with
6:58 am
missile and rocket and space technology. en then to give things to give the military more secure. as a reservist working every weekend i am proud of that. i believe in a strong military that is loved by our people and respected by allies. not just inclusiveness but we have to go back and look at what we need in this state.
6:59 am
and united states congress has to do that. food you want to declare war that has been there or done that? it is important i know what it is like to go to war. i think you have got to look at the qualifications of the people before you, not donald trump. i have citizens for trump that endorsed me tonight, national spokesman who supported donald trump. they know what donald trump stands for. the problem is he is being cut off in his office. he is being redirected by people
7:00 am
like mcconnell who do not support his agenda, will not support his agenda in the future. we need to go back and look at these things and what is going on. this is the most unbelievable race i have ever been in. my opponent that i'm attacking him by standing here and telling the truth about how he got his appointment, how he made his living. with all this he blistered me on television for three months now, solid, unapologetically, and he is proud of attacking my wife. but there is a god and there is a god in heaven that is in this campaign. we look forward to september 26th, coming soon. that is all i have, thank you. >> moderator: this will be your concluding remarks. strange: my opponent i have to say to him with all due respect,
7:01 am
i don't god is just on your side. i don't god is just on my side. i he is on both of our sides, he's on the president's side. 10, the president is on my side. [applause] >> the president is on my side. what you just said shows lack of understanding of the president, his character and determination and loyalty and friendship. you just said he was being manipulated by mitch mcconnell. i met mitch mcconnell six or seven months ago. i stood up to him on many occasions. to suggest the president of the united states, the head of the free world, a man who is changing the world is being manipulated by mitch mcconnell is insulting to the president, absolutely insulting to the president, that is why he has
7:02 am
chosen me. many people supporting you look like an employment line at the white house. they are fired, they are not there. there is a reason for that, the president -- if anybody in this room or state of alabama doubt that, that he can't make up his mind without being influenced by someone, you misread the president. there are other differences, judgment is one. i won't well on a case where we came head to head, law enforcement, have attachment for law enforcement, i love being the attorney general. you may not remember a terrible case where he sided with the defendant in a very serious case, reflects on judgments, we will talk about that later. as time wind down i want to get
7:03 am
back to why this is so important, why this election is so important. it is a national election. where we have people who respect the president or just say president is being manipulated, believe whatever anybody tells him. the president is a man of principle who knows his mind and makes decisions freely and he made a decision freely in picking me, picking me and i am proud he is here. we will have a historic time tomorrow night and so will alabama. it will be magnificent. 20,000 people already ready to be there and the president will come himself and say this, why he needs me in washington. that is a historic occasion. the vice president is coming. they are coming because they want to get things done. they looked at my record and my opponent's record and made a decision. this is not a namby-pamby decision, we will get around to it. they know what is at stake, this
7:04 am
is a big deal that is at stake. we have to have people in washington who will get things done, who can call the president and tell the truth say we need your help, here is what is going on, here is what we can do, let's get it done. he is all about getting things done, that is why he was elected president of the united states. i am glad to be his friend. i am glad to serve with and work with them. nobody influences me. then we wouldn't have cleaned up montgomery and drained the swamp. i would've let a private law firm handle the case and not sued barack obama dozens of times and won protecting our citizens and protect our constitution and rule of law. never would have happened. enemies saying the wildest
7:05 am
things. most entertaining to me as he is not negative. if you haven't been to his facebook or twitter page take a look at it. we have a sign on our house that says no whining, no whining in politics. of the president was whining it wouldn't be the president. you got to take the fight to the other side. that is why the president picked me in this race, why he is coming down here to be with me. it is not just about me or my opponent. it is about america, we have the country we want and restore the values we cherish, people are dying all over the world right now as we speak serving around the clock to protect us. are we going to protect, preserve and make this country great again? it will be a test of our state and our people. will we support our president or not? i believe we will. by voting for me on tuesday, get
7:06 am
ready for a fantastic entertaining patriotic weekend with the president in alabama. i greatly appreciate your vote on september 26th. you very much. [applause] >> thank you, these are your concluding remarks into night's debate. moore: i didn't mean to be misunderstood. i believe moore: is in this -- i don't mean he is in it for me to win or lose. i believe whatever happens with windsor i win, that is what i mean. i never prayed to win. i believe in god's will. i don't want anybody to think i am claiming god is in this. he will see me through this hopefully. i will finish it and it will be over september 26th.
7:07 am
i want to talk about if you took everything he said about the president this and president that and everything about the president and the vice president, there wouldn't be much left to talk about issues. 12 pages solid of national leaders, i'm not going to repeat them. i don't believe any of that. this race is not me against the president or the vice president, it is me against luther strange. i tell you what mcconnell has done. he called bentley and got him the point. they wanted the lobbyists up there. mcconnell wages war down south. the senate leader is being pillared in an alabama special election, the hated symbol of the establishment and he is responding in force unleashing the full force of the political machine in a push to stop two far right conservatives who
7:08 am
threaten to make his life miserable in the senate. a conservative making his life miserable in mo brooks. do you remember when ads came out for his campaign against brooks? do you remember repeating and repeating and repeating and continued until the runoff? then he switches and changes it to me. that is very unusual. i have never been in a race like this where somebody attacks both his opponents with mercy. both his opponents. why? republican establishment is at or near panic mode about the upcoming alabama senate race. the primary august 15th, the establishment favorite is trailing. there is little fear among republicans democrats can win
7:09 am
the seat but majority leader mitch mcconnell is among establishment figures alarmed that supreme court chief justice roy moore. ahead in the polls. strange was appointed a seat after jeff sessions resigned as attorney general. the washington party leadership runs for the seat. this is cnn, not my best friend in the world. mcconnell who has a 52-48 majority has made it clear he does not want the conservative rebel in a gop conference already difficult to manage. after polling showing for opening lead with 6 weeks to go, rallying financial and other support for strange, that is where we get 300, or $30 million in funds being put in this race.
7:10 am
people of alabama should be very concerned when $30 million comes from washington dc to try to make you choose who you want for united states senate. i want to tell you the people of alabama see through this, they see through what washington is trying to do and they are upset. go read the blogs, the internet, facebook pages. we will have a huge turnout. we look forward to the results. we look forward to turning back some things that should be turned back, that is control of the federal government who we want to send to alabama. i fought in vietnam. i thought the court in alabama against liberal judges, federal judges who tried to make us do things. i will fight for you in the
