run the first times we met was at the western governors meeting in montana this summer. montana's most beautiful states. i could spend many days there exploring. beside such a better mutual love of canada and the u.s. you talk about your four daughters. that right there is the experiences a person needs to manage the relationship between two countries right there. [laughter] the western governors meeting, i was impressed by how many canadian officials were there talking with the governors and mayors.

7:37 pm
first world war he was with the 35000 americans across the border he went overseas with the canadian troops and met a woman and married her. i can never figure out why someone would move from california to ottawa. our outreach is going well. there's already many existing relationships between governors and business people on both sides of the border. it hasn't been a struggle to find common ground. we find that the governors that i know this is true is that they
7:38 pm
really are close to their businesses. they know what creates jobs. i think it's the same way. they have a very close relationship with business community and communities in general. they understand how much were interdependent. it's been great for the federal government to reach out to just washington but to use our network of counseling throughout the united states to work cooperatively. and to tap into what's already a great relationship. i think we're taking it too much for granted. is there anything you do differently at the present moment? and i said no i just start three years earlier.

7:41 pm
kentucky, bourbon and automobiles are our gifts to canada and we received the whiskey and the aluminum back. and hopefully a few basketball players along the way. in kentucky there is no border. for us, we have not no border. though canada we wouldn't be in a wonderful situation that were in economically. a lot of the governors i feel this way about all of the states, i think we need to reach out and remember this is more than a trade situation, this is personal. while the numbers aren't huge,
7:42 pm
we need to talk about real stories and people and the people to people connection. at the end of the day, you are our best friends. we need to nurture that relationship. and it takes nurturing. we need to focus on the positive and really bring together the best in both of us. that's what i want. i want to look back and see what should i have done. i want to be proud of what were gonna do together to promote. [applause] you had a busy year with the change of government. , how do you feel the bilateral
7:43 pm
relationship is today and how do you feel over the past few years moving forward how the relationship has fared? >> last summer we had a cabinet retreat. we did not know what the result of the election was going to be. talking about what we needed to do. super big so focus on the things we had in common, not let little differences get the way. with the new administration coming in we needed to start out by developing solid and personal relationships. so in difficult times came out
7:44 pm
he knew the people you are sitting across the table from. so the president say congratulations and you will have lots of problems around the world the canada will be one of him. we will always be your friend. from then on we got to know that counterparts and there's really good relationships develop. we don't always agree on things but you have so much in common you can get through the difficult times. i was used to say my previous life, get to know people in the government on a noncrisis basis. think about talking to them in the language they understand not
7:45 pm
just about your agenda but there's. and find third parties who will endorse what you're trying to do. developing a personal relationship and talk into the administration about what we have it, and for the parties to endorse or trying to achieve. starts at the top. the prime minister and the president actually do get along well. they have a degree of mutual respect that will stand the test of time when we get into difficult times. there are some issues that will be tough to deal with. 95% of the relationship works very well.
7:46 pm
>> your prime minister has been a rock star, especially in the state of kentucky. i hear that a lot more governor. how pleased he is that he's given individual attention. think that's what's really important. i do agree that president trump and prime minister trudeau have respect for one another. they do speak frequently and that's very important in times when you do not agree, used to keep the dialogue open. sometimes you are really in need to have that line and are not having to start all over. i want to make sure that just from the state standpoint we engage everyone on a state level
7:47 pm
it is breezy studying for that platform. maybe to reach out to people who aren't in total agreement that we have open dialogue fetal have that in a time of crisis you can pick up the phone you don't have that grounding. >> [inaudible] your remark tonight and all the people in this room is comforting words to hear put societies to know that you're at the helm is fantastic

military in terms of drug interdiction in the caribbean and the criminal people when they're trying to illegally move people into the country. the degree of cooperation goes and is quite remarkable. it's unprecedented anywhere in the world. no countries sure that information and trusts. we had an event at the embassy copartners in defense. our chief defense staff in the joint chiefs of the united states. every soldier they talk to the talk about serving together in afghanistan when he think about what you we face we seen it in
7:50 pm
that threat will continue. we have such a good relationsh relationship. >> i like to complement them minister because she's taken to focus when were [inaudible] the same page that whether it be venezuela, latvia or ukraine, complements to her because that's an example we should all follow. [applause]
