[inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] >> in a few minutes we will go upstairs and hold a moment of silence for the victims of yesterday's shooting we have lowered the flags at the capital half staff the first thoughts of the families of those who were lost five people are fighting for their lives and we need to pray for each one of those people right now. also thank god for the law

enforcement and the heroes of the school and i want to offer this. there are a lot of worries coming being a parent of teenagers. we have three but this is the nightmare in pure evil for these kids just today should've been a typical high school day and in an instant the worst day of their lives. looking at this this morning i got a message one sent to her mom if i don't make it, i love you and i appreciate everything you did for me. with all that fear to have love and gratitude for her parents. we can learn a lot from our kids when we step back to think -- counter blessings but just pull together this house and the whole country stands together i will take your questions i will be brief because i have to get upstairs.

>> when you talk about not taking sides and to be critical of their request on the select committee on gun violence with a background check and criticized with their response and then investigated are those the taking sides were referring to ? >> mental health is a big problem underlying these tragedies that could be the case based on earlier reporting that we passed legislation on mental health we want to make sure that they don't get a gun if they are not supposed to but we will find out if there was a breakdown in the system or not but you also know we passed legislation with the instant background check system and that bill is sitting in the united states senate.

so if someone who is not supposed to get a gun we have to figure out why that is happening that is a piece of legislation we already passed sitting in the senate and we do know there are early indications for mental illness we have to do a better job to make sure people don't slip through the cracks. >> should law enforcement confiscate a weapon? been at this is not the time to jump to a conclusion not knowing the full facts we have not enough information but if someone is mentally ill and slipping through the cracks to get a gun we do have laws on the books we do have a system and if there are gaps we need to look at those gaps that was why we fixed the system.

>> why won't you move forward on background checks? >> in the bill that is part of the broader bill does fix the background check system the shooting in texas a man convicted in the air force of domestic violence was not supposed to get a gun but yet the air force did not give the records to the system and he got a gun. that is one of the reasons why we passed legislation to plug that pole to make sure that wasn't the case that came from hearings and we had hearings on the gaps in the system and that led to the conclusion there were gaps to be fixed that led to legislation that has now passed the house. >> so the question is you say now to say that something isn't right but do you consider a select committee? >> congress should do its job

we passed mental health legislation two years ago because of the underlying mental health program one -- problem with the shootings that legislation is now implemented so from earlier reporting's me understand now there are issues with this shooting so are those laws where they need to be are they being implemented or enforced? we do have laws on the books designed to prevent people from mental illnesses to get firearms or those who have criminal backgrounds but the question is are they working the right way? we found some loopholes. >> would you consider moving legislation as a stand-alone bill or just the provision? >> the bill is in the senate hopefully they can pass something.

>> i think that is a good bill it is in the senate we will see if they can get to conference then we figure out what we need from their then we figure out what we need from their

>> and spencer was an american poet with the harlem renaissance. part of that is how harlem comes to lynchburg and there is a whole group of people that were associated with that that people don't know about.

>> in spite of trumps background we are pleasantly surprised he is come around on issues and how he has been the best president for those issues and really i think he'll be one of the greatest presidents we ever had. >> that created interest in my grandfather's ability and a phenomenal position but somehow he managed to be a student to transform that learning into a program that for decades provided players to integrate into the sport
