[cheers and applause] >> the presentation of our colors and the national anthem as we're getting set for baseball here this evening at nationals park, republicans and the democrats, and guys, last year over 24,000 people here at this game because of the -- a lot of it because of what took place one year ago today. >> right. >> steve scalise and as dave mentioned all eyes will be on the field tonight when he takes the field. you can just imagine the excitement and the anticipation going through his mind, and we don't have to imagine that anymore because we had a chance to catch up with him earlier this week at the practice field. >> what does it feel like to be out here in uniform and, you

know, taking grounders and having, you know, a normal morning with these guys like you have done for years? >> it feels incredible just to be back out here. you know, this was something i love doing. obviously with what happened last year, couldn't make the game. i wondered if i would even be able to walk again. to be able to be back out here, obviously i'm not as mobile as i used to be but still might be one of the faster guys on the team. it is a lot of fun to be back and be a part of this team. >> what was the reception like? i know you came out a couple days ago and what was it like from your end to see how everybody reacted? >> it was an unbelievable warm feeling to have everybody welcome me back so warmly. it is a special feeling. i know how lucky i am to be alive and to be able to be back here and do this. it's just, you know, it gives you a special feeling.

>> i'm sure you have seen stuff from last year's game well out after the fact and been able to watch video and all that, but i heard you went out to the democratic practice yesterday to meet with them. what was that like? what was some of the conversations and just the reaction to seeing you out there? >> you know, right after the shooting, when the democrats were having their practice, they heard about the shooting, and they all came together and said a prayer, and i really thanked them for that. i appreciated that they, you know, that they wanted to -- were thinking about me and rooting for me, and at the beginning of the game, last year, they had a prayer at second base. they all wore lsu hats and that was really a nice tribute. i wanted to thank them and let them know that this was about coming together and helping local charities, but i just appreciated that they -- just shows what this game is all

about, just coming together and putting our party differences aside to do something good for local charities here in d.c. >> i know it's always been that. has it taken on a different tenor the last couple of years because of the national politics, because of everything that happened last year? do you think it's become maybe just more of a weight on the fact that it is that one bipartisan event? >> i think it is. you know, there's a heightened awareness about the game nationally, and i think that's a healthy thing, and also it gives us a real opportunity to show the country that for all the differences we have, which are real up here in washington, that the two parties can come together at least for one night and hopefully that builds something longer lasting. we build strong relationships between democrats and republicans through this game. i have really good friends on the democrat side that i would have never met if i didn't play in this game because we compete against each other real

aggressively on the field, but we get to know each other in a much stronger way. >> they get to know each other, but once they step on the field, they want to win the baseball game. we have seen that in the years we have been calling this game. what was the reaction on the field with him? i can imagine just the excitement of him being out there, just being on the field >> right, well, and i didn't know when i went to practice that he had any intention of actually playing in this game. i thought he was just out there, you know, for moral support, put the jersey on, be a part of the festivities, but, you know, he's still on a crutch, but he's absolutely planning to come out and actually play in this game. >> it will be exciting to see him as he takes the field as we have our ceremonial first pitch. >> they were both at the

practice. they were both shot. congressman was the headline especially as a ranking member, but there were capitol police officers shot. there were a number of people who were victims as part of that shooting a year ago today. >> and the republicans the home team here this evening. so they will be -- the democrats will be up first as we get a look at their lineup. >> yeah, leading off raul ruiz, aguilar batting second, playing short stop. there will be some switches in terms of their defensive positions. beware and bear with us. senator richmond as we profiled at the top will pitch and bat third. tim ryan, third base. chris murphy, the catcher in the sixth spot. seventh is joe donnelly the first baseman. left fielder. and ninth, playing right field. >> when you listen to the

here this evening and of course federal news radio. >> live on the radio, live on tv and live on the web. >> live on the web. >> and as the republicans take the field here, you can see scalise, he's still using a crutch. i mean he is not 100% recovered by any means. just because he's playing in this game, getting a helping hand out to his position at second base. he is going to start and play we think probably only for a little bit. it's more ceremonial than anything, but he is slated to lead off for the republicans in the bottom of the first. >> you can't imagine -- you can't imagine what that ovation is going to be like, dave, when he steps in the batter's box. >> absolutely. emotional moment building up here as it has been all year. this time last year the guy was fighting for his life. >> one year ago today. >> amazing. he gradually came back. finally came back to the hill to a great ovation on the house floor. now he's back to a very good place to be. he's not perfect yet.

he's got some walking problems. but the fact that he's simply here tonight is astounding. >> we talked to senator richmond as well this week at the last democratic practice. and he mentioned the day of the game, it was the day after the shooting, the very next day, and he went to the hospital and they didn't know at that point if scalise was going to make it. i mean he was in critical condition for a long time. >> yeah, absolutely >> and so this game last year was played under just an incredible sort of -- a unique -- not a cloud, but just a different vibe, and as we mentioned, nearly 25,000 people came out which i remember that beat a number of major league attendances that night. >> looking around the ballpark that night, the entire basically lower bowl filled with people. we had a perfect night. you're not going to get 25,000 but i still we'll still get a pretty good crowd tonight. mark walker is on the mound for

the republicans. last year walker gave up eight runs, only four of them earned in four innings of work, two walks and a strikeout. he gets to start here this evening. raul ruiz, dave, will be leading off. >> okay. >> for the democrats tonight. >> walker has started each of the last three years. >> yep. >> he's given them between four and five and a third innings every year. he's usually solid. there are obviously errors in this game. this is not the most airtight of defense as these guys play once a year, competitively and while they practice for a month or two ahead of time. it usually takes them an inning or two to get settled in. >> ruiz getting to set to step in the batter's box. mark walker on the hill. ruiz, california. walker into the line and we are underway the 2018 congressional baseball game and a ground ball to 2nd.

scalise throws him out at first, from his knees. the entire infield, the entire field goes over to congratulate him and give him a big hug, how about that for the very first pitch he gets the ground ball and throws out ruiz at first base. what a moment. the hug. >> if i didn't know better, you would think this was scripted. but i don't think those guys are capable of hitting a ball right at him. you could give them 100 tries off of, and he wouldn't hit the ball at scalise. >> he goes down to one knee, back hands it and throws it to first. ruiz congratulated him as well. everyone on the field went out and gave scalise a big hug. that's a good way to get started at 7:13 on a thursday night. >> first pitch is a strike on the inside corner. >> beautiful evening here in

downtown d.c. >> do we have the temperature by the way? >> it is 85 right now. >> it doesn't feel it. >> it is 85 with 28% humidity which sun heard of in summertime. -- which is unheard of in the summertime. >> that one went by scalise. aguilar rounded first, on his way to the second with the double, just out of the reach of scalise. aguilar the first base runner of the night. >> second with one out double. >> as i mentioned, this game tends to have some scoring early. these guys aren't waiting for pitches. aguilar has had a lot of production at the top of the lineup in this game. the democrats were three in the first last year after giving up two in the top half, never trailed the rest of the way on the way to win an 11-2 victory >> the plan b if richmond needs a break from the mound, aguilar says i hope i'm playing center field and my hope is never to take the mound. but if cedric needs a rest, we will see.

>> cedric is going to come out and help scalise off the field. he got a ground ball to start things off. he's coming out of the game to a huge ovation wearing a usa jersey. high fives from everybody as he crosses the first base bag towards the dugout. cedric richmond right there and scalise getting some help off the field. as we talk about the bond between richmond and scalise. >> fellow louisiana. won't die can't die spirit of his home state, everything they have been through the last 10, 15 years, the natural disasters, hurricanes, the oil spill and just that toughness, even though these guys are about as far apart as they can come on the political spectrum, they obviously understand and respect each other as human beings. >> scalise of course in his job as house whip does a lot of walking on the floor, trying to round up votes so he's probably had a full day already moving around before he even came here tonight >> here's richmond the starting

of interaction anyway. they ride the subway together. they kid each other. i see them on the elevator joking with each other. it's always been like that. they are hard core on the floor. steve scalise is a tough debater. for him it's been a slow road back. he has had to be careful about his schedule. he used a wheelchair for a long time. i think he still does to a certain extent. as you saw tonight, he came in for the first inning and that was pretty much it for him and probably will be. i don't know how much more his baseball prowess is going to be, how good it's going to be, but he's recovering. and the fact that he's around has been a boost for everybody. and i think maybe there's been a light of some cooperation. they are not as hard-line maybe as they were before he got shot. i think everybody had a chance to reflect onthat. you know, i just think the whole experience has changed the

congress. >> and we likely won't see too much more from scalise tonight. he was never a major participant as far as the baseball side of this one. he's been out here a number of years, but as we saw kevin brady take over for him, kevin brady is in fact about to step in the box to lead things off for the republicans. >> with a tremendous uniform. >> the texas lone star? is that texas rangers? i know he's worn a jeff bagwell jersey in the past. >> that's right, he has. >> brady can really hit. a lot of people play softball. we play softball. a lot of people can step in and, you know, exist in a softball game. but we're talking about a real, a real tough hand eye coordination sport in baseball and brady is easily the best hitter on the republican side. >> and he indeed played college baseball back in north dakota. he's from north dakota.

he's a transplant to texas. richmond into the line, the first pitch has some heat on it, down low, brady swings and misses. every year i'm always impressed how richmond takes the mound, first batter, doesn't mess around, right back up there, that's 0 and 2. >> he threw something like 130 pitches that first year, 17 strikeouts, 17 in the 21 outs by strikeouts. complete game shutout. he knows his arm can't take that anymore. he's happy to get guys on one pitch. >> right. >> he's happy to throw fewer pitches if he can. we've seen the last couple of years he got in trouble two years ago he threw 138 pitches, really struggled. last year he got through it in 114 for a complete game. i'm sure he'd be looking for a number in that range or even lower if possible. >> 2-2 in to the wind. ball outside, 3 and 2.
