i do think i'm not going to pretend to be an expert the consensus was it was already a problematic diagnosis. in the world health organization has been poised to do the same.
7:01 am
i have a question online here. despite the high phrase online in reviews he has been helped to high regard in history as you have are explained. have you received any blowback from supporters of his. or is there any resentment for your findings. >> surprisingly no. and i was really braced for this. i've have some negative comments on twitter and twitter and facebook but by people who have not read the book. i have not heard directly from people who are personally affronted by this. i think people take it as serious rather than an attack of any sort.
7:02 am
>> you mentioned what akira a cure occurred at the time. was that driven by parents who did not want their peers to do that. the protest the whole complex is called stein hawk. they have both children's and adults. and so that is really what the public knew about. the killings of children. it's really incredible.
7:03 am
so that's right. i should say. with the protest. hitler technically shut down the program as a result. i don't want to give you the wrong idea. continued in secret. we were seen as objectionable enough. to put yourself out there on the line. in the back towards the center.
7:04 am
i remember in the 50s and 60s and so the poor mother not only did she have to deal with an autistic child. but then everyone was shunning her the refrigerator mother. so ironically this is one of the reasons that asperger's is praise today. that it was not the parents fault. if you look at the context. they are concerned with
7:05 am
hereditary illness. to suggest an inheritable basis. in the front to your right. >> i was curious about the drawings in the slide. were they done by the child. it was a poignant drying. i'm not sure how will you can see it. when she was first brought to the clinic. she was brought to take a bath. and she is a long talk with the nurse about her experiences and the nurse in her notes said she just went on and on i can't wait for her to shut up. and that she then she drew the picture you could see it was a
7:06 am
really cheerful house. she had warm ideas of a loving home and then she put herself as a solitary figure in the corner so seeing herself already in the clinic as the victim. the next question i will ask the gentleman to stand up. given how readily you uncover these disturbing facts about asperger's what he think it has taken so long for his reputation to go untainted. that is another 64,000-dollar question. i think it took a while for nazi crimes to get uncovered in austria anyway. they had known about this involvement. it's just about comparisons with other perpetrators.
7:07 am
he was just transferring children there. on the scale of perpetrators. i think in the u.s. we have different standards for the horror factor. autism is not as well-known as a diagnosis. the story behind how it was accepted as an eponymous diagnosis in 1984 the team that was behind that. wrote to five different archives saying what do you know about it. we don't want to go ahead and name this disorder as someone that might have been located. we don't know enough to say no.
7:08 am
it was already in existence. there was a lot of pressure to get disorder into the american manual. maybe there is more to the story than i know about that. we've a number of hands up. i realize it's not the scope of your study or your book. but in doing all your research did you stumble across anything that what they would do with all of the bodies of these tombs.
7:09 am
yes they would be a horrific letter that i found from one man saying thank you for disposing of the body i'm sorry we couldn't make the burial. you mentioned the various ideologies. being responsible. what other things do you think might be playing a role in this increase. i have to speak to this because i'm not in the science of autism. but that diagnostic criteria is one factor that everyone recognizes. that what we think of as autism was widened.
7:10 am
beyond that i can't speculate. there is all kind of theories or environmental. to your right. you mention experiments done on the children did you find something in the archive specifically of jewish children were targeted. or a particular part. they were not kept in any kind of a designated fashion. they were already deported elsewhere. four of the children who perished were jewish or half jewish that was not a factor.
7:11 am
i should say on the question of what happened to the bodies that over half the children who perished their brains were kept in jars in this seller. as well as some other body parts. not all remains were targeted. i artie know the answer to this but i'm fascinated by your work. and having met you. can you please let the crowd know what your next project is. i am writing about switzerland and world war ii. i think it played and terribly in port numeral that port numeral that has yet to be recognized. and not only at the economic front with trade and the holocaust. in terms of despised story.
7:12 am
as well as nazi networks. the battle plans went through switzerland. i hope to uncover a lot of the secret stuff that was happening. and what you could call the post office. tonight on c-span two. authors of a recent books about democracy. the road to unfreedom. political commentator discusses suicide of the west. they examine the role negotiates play. a week on the c-span two.
