>> they have a lot of food. >> host: i thought they didn't have the super food toast we have here. we have the fanciest toast you'll ever see. >> they have food and they have drinks. >> host: now we can't talk at this moment but we'd like to thank delta dental to help make this conversation possible, the events team for their miracles overnight, the axeio healthcare team for their exert coverage that we appreciate so much, i'd like to thank you all of you for coming, and thanks for a great conversation. [applause] >> sara frays is a congressional reporter for politico. she talked about the latest funds to prevent a shut down, and sara where are congress and the white house in these talks
12:07 am
at this point? >> well the house and the senate went home on thursday and they won't be coming back at least the house won't be coming back until wednesday, so there are -- the leadership on it house and senate are here over the weekend, and they'll be trying to figure out what the white house wants, they'll then put forward a spending package that can pass both chambers and avoid a shut down by next friday, lawmakers did leave the capital on thursday with no idea of what next week is going to look like and whether they're going to be here on christmas. >> and so president trump met with democratic leaders this past week at the white house. what other key differences the border wall of course but what are the details in terms of where they are on the wall? >> so -- the border wall has been the issue for months and months and all of appropriations and nerds on capitol hill have been reading the text and looking into the specifics and basically president trump has been demanding this $5 billion for the border wall that's just
12:08 am
kind of his number, there's not a specific proj that he wants yet. that's his number. the house republicans have been eager to give him that number. the house bill would include $5 billion but the senate bipartisan bill includes 1 poin, that would be for new fencing, largely in california, and in specific areas of the brrd. that's something democrats have agreed to so there is a plan out there right now that has $1.6 billion for the wall that both parties have agreed to. the trouble of course, is that is a lot less than $5 billion from the white house and in this meeting on tuesday that was televised, and it was an extraordinary exchange with nancy pelosi and chuck schumer president trump said he was going to demand the $5 billion and not accept the $1.6 billion. >> what are you hearing in terms of what his advisers are telling
12:09 am
him at this point now that he's dug in this deep to the border wall? >> so, there's not a lot of people in the white house who are really gunning for a shut down at this point. the republicans are going to be in the final days of their majority in the house. the senate republicans would like to see things done and don't want to be blamed for a shut down. there are advisers in the white house that have pressured trump to accept the deal and explain to him it's going to be nearly impossible to get the $5 billion for the wall without causing a dramatic year-end shut down, both parties on capitol hill don't want to be here over the holidays. on friday the president has meetings scheduled with his budget director and budget chief, and they're going to be discussing possible options including a two-week stop gap funding bill freezing current levels of funding for two more weeks into january, and this
12:10 am
would effectively -- the decision until house democrats have retaken the majority. that's an idea that some house republicans say they're okay with doing even if it doesn't deliver the $5 billion for there wall they think it will help them avoid being blamed for the shut down. >> members of the house have gone back to their districts, and they're on standby to come back to the capital, the first vote scheduled wednesday night what are we going to see this his the floor of the house and senate. >> as we've seen members of the house can pass a spending bill very quickly if they want to. they could in theory come back wednesday night, have text of a bill, ready to go, and they could vote on that thursday, and the senate could send it on fried, and everybody could be home and with their families just several days ahead of christmas eve, but there also could be drama with president trump changing his mind and that's the reason we haven't seen a roll out of legislative
12:11 am
texts or what text is being drafted right now because appropriations committee staffers have been preparing some options. they're not formally preparing them but they've been told to get ideas ready in case they do need to go ahead with the two-week resolution or longer. these committees are preparing options they want to have something ready and they could come back on monday if it looks like there's going to be a proattracted fight, or if there's an appetite for house republicans to deliver that $5 billion in a separate bill. right now that's not the plan, they're not clear if they would have the votes to do that given the number of absences in the house recently. leader mccarthy left the house open and putting members on standby in case they decide to add additional votes next week. >> sara ferris reporting for politico, you can find her

articles at politico.com, and her tweets at sara nferris. >> coming up this weekend on book tv, saturday at 8:00 p.m. eastern highlights from former first lady michelle obama's tour across the country, where she reflects in her life and time in the white house. >> the notion that there's a little girl from the south side of chicago who at the time was named michelle obama was going to dive deep into the midwest in iowa, going door to door in people's homes and they were opening umhomes and welcoming me to their kitchen tables and what connected us was our story. >> and then on sunday on after words, citizens unit president david bossy and trump campaign manager corey lewandowski disuses their books, "trump's

enemies" they're interviewed by sharyl attkisson. >> i don't want to be a conspiracy theorist but we refer to these people as the november 9th club meaning they became a fan of trump after he got elected. they didn't vote for him but they found an opportunity to join in administration which was young and inexperienced to further their own agendas. >> as part of becoming president he listened a lot to republican leaders in washington and took advice from folks that i don't know that he would do that same thing today. i think during that transition in the first month or two of his administration the learning curve was incredibly steep just like it is for every single president of the united states. there's no classes, there's no degree on being president, and it's a learning curve. >> watch book tv this weekend on c-span 2.

>> saturday at 8:00 p.m. eastern conversations with three retiring members of congress, senator claire mccaskill, and republican represents mark sanford and dana rohrabacher discuss losing their reelection bids and reflect on their time in congress. >> experience is not a positive thing in government now. i like to make the joke that imagine if they're wheeling you into the operating room and the nurse leans downs down and says i have good news for you. this surgeon has never done this before. you'd go, back it up. but in government now, that's exactly what people want. they want people running for office that have never been around government because they've become so cynical that anyone who has chosen this for a career is not looking after them. >> i have a lot of -- but what i would say is and this was part of the blessing of having a
12:15 am
second chance at politics after i blew myself up in 2000 nine is that i have seen and experienced firsthand people's grace which is a reflection of god's grace. and that is an incredibly humbling journey to walk. particularly in a public venue. >> i had what i call the billionaires who i have stepped on their toes over the years who decided i had to go, and i was outspent over 10-1 that i know of now. it might be a lot more than that when we look into it. by people who are worth billions of dollars and don't even live in california. >> watch conversations with retiring members of congress, saturday at 8:00 p.m. eastern on c-span, and c-span.org. you can also listen with the free c-span radio app. >> next a discussion about the trump administration's criticism of the so-called "deep state"
